  • If there is one Japanese company that can lay claim to having a reputation for innovation and advanced engineering, it is Honda.

It is a reputation built over more than 30 years, starting from the first generation of the Civic in the ‘70s and continuing throughout the years with novelties such as VTEC, the futuristic first generation Insight hybrid back in 1999, the S2000's high-revving 120HP-per-liter engine, the first practical supercar, the NSX – and the list goes on.

However, something seems to have changed, and not for the better.

                Hot Civic being mulled
New hot hatch will need at least 250bhp
                Engine may be turbocharged

                2012 Honda Civic uncovered
Honda says it's looking at building a 'sporty variant' of the new Civic. The Japanese manufacturer refused to confirm that the hot version - which will probably go on sale in around 18 months - will carry the Type R badge, although it would be a major surprise if it didn't.

Civic development leader Mitsuru Kariya told What Car? the new 'Type R' will need at least 250bhp to compete with rivals such as the Renault Megane 250 Cup and the new Ford Focus ST.

That means Honda will need to develop a new engine for the hot Civic, and it confirmed that it's looking at the possibility of a turbocharging - a first for a performance Honda. Kariya was quick to point out that no decision has yet been made on this, and that a naturally aspirated engine may yet feature.

As for the design, Civic design supervisor Daisuke Sawai said he'd like to make something aggressively styled like the old Type R, to 'express the car's sporty aspects'.

                • 2012 Honda Civic uncovered

2012 Honda Civic uncovered - Introduction
                  12 September 2011

This ninth-generation model aims to build on the strengths of the current car, but add extra technology, better efficiency, improved ride and handling and higher quality.

                  What’s new
Apart from a similar overall look and the basic platform underneath it, nothing is carried over from the current Civic.

The influence of the wind tunnel is key to the new look: Honda has used every trick in the book to optimise airflow, to both reduce drag and improve high-speed stability.

The rear end has the greatest effect on aerodynamic drag, which explains the Civic’s distinctively high-set, sculpted look. It also accounts for the unique ‘side spoilers’ mounted on the rear wings, below the tail lights. These are standard for diesel models and drop CO2 emissions by 1g/km.

There have been some concessions to improve rear visibility – one of the current car’s major flaws. Crucially, the ‘wing’ that cuts across the rear screen is lower and narrower. There’s a windscreen wiper this time, too, while the heating elements cover the whole screen, not just the upper section.

There’s also a larger side window area, although Honda points out that it’s still smaller than usual for the class, helping to create a sporty, ‘three-door’ look. As before, the rear door handles are ‘hidden’ within the frame, adding to the illusion. This time around, there are no plans for a three-door model.

                  Five key facts
                  • Longer and lower
                  • Aerodynamic drag cut by more than 12%
                  • Engines are cleaner, but more powerful
                  • Improved rear visibility
                  • Little or no price rise

                  • Honda gives European unit a bigger role

FRANKFURT — Rather than give its six global business units a fixed platform for upcoming products, Honda will give reach region a toolbox of component sets from which to develop products that best suit their individual markets, CEO Takanobu Ito said.

Honda, which will redesign its entire European engine lineup within the next few years, will allow regions to develop their own technologies, he said.

Ito said that Honda has recently "transformed" its product development mechanism and system.

"Until now, we developed new technology in Japan and disseminated it to the U.S. and Europe," he said. "Now, we are encouraging our regions to develop their own technologies and utilize the best materials in their region."

For instance, Honda's regions – Japan, Europe, the U.S., China, Asia and the Middle East – might have a different idea for what would make the best Fit or Jazz subcompact hatchback.

Having separate development in each region would allow a more tailored approach to the local customers. It also could allow for simultaneous launches globally, unlike currently where the U.S. and Europe trails the home market launch by a year or two.

"Each region will have its own technologies and materials. This kind of evolution is necessary," Ito said at the Frankfurt auto show.

The automaker will also give more supplier contracts to companies outside of Japan, as a reaction to the March earthquake that devastated its supply chain.

                    New diesel for Europe

Ito said that a 1.6-liter diesel engine coming in 2012 will lead Honda's renewal of its entire engine and transmission lineup in Europe over the next three or four years.

He said that, despite increased interest in hybrids here, Honda "spent significant money to reserve this [diesel] in the lineup," due to the high demand for diesel engines in Europe.

"We are slightly behind in some kinds of technologies, but we have evolved our powertrains, especially for petrol engines," Ito said. "For the next year after year, we are going to change our petrol engines, so our competitiveness will be even stronger than today."

                    New European Civic

Manabu Nishimae, president of Honda Motor Europe, said the redesigned Civic, which goes on sale this autumn, should sell about 100,000 units annually, about equal to its 2007 peak but double its present volumes.

Ito took direct aim at the VW Golf in describing the new Civic.

"It has a more fun-to-drive experience than the Golf, and once you step into the car, you experience a space and utility which the Golf doesn't have," Ito said. "This is a great starting point for the Honda revolution."

Regarding Honda's reliance on a single source for key components, Ito said, "We have learned a big lesson from the earthquake. Toyota, Nissan and Honda were all affected, but Honda was affected the most."

The big hit was with a downed Tier 2 microchip supplier – whom Ito declined to identify – connected the engine and transmission control units and airbag deployment. Honda thought it had alternative sources, but not at a price-competitive level. Now Honda has backup from suppliers in China and Asia.

Said Ito: "For our global business, we have to have multiple suppliers."

                          • Honda to Reveal New Accord Coupe Concept at the Detroit Motor Show

Honda announced on Monday that it is planning the world premiere of an all-new Accord Coupe concept study at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, which takes place in Detroit from January 10 to 23.

The Japanese automaker noted that the study would preview the styling direction of the next-generation Accord that will be sold in North American in both four-door sedan and two-door coupe body styles.

"The Accord Coupe Concept will convey the dynamic and aggressive profile of the ninth-generation 2013 Honda Accord set to go on sale in the fall of 2012," Honda said in a short press statement.

While the Japanese brand did not give out any more information regarding the study or the production model, at the recent 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda Motor President Takanobu Ito told reporters that the company's plans include the presentation of a hybrid version of the next Accord sedan.

We should note that the Accord Coupe concept will preview the North American market model as the European Accord sedan and estate are based on the Acura TSX.

Din sursele mele stiu ca va aparea peste un an de zile un rival al lui Qashqai, adica un model situat sub CR-V ( poate succesorul lui HR-V ?!?!) cu ceva (a se citi "putine") valente off-road, destinat in special utilizarii in oras.
