      • 2010 Acura ZDX is more than distinctive !

        http://www.kansascity.com/437/story/1620384.html

Whats more important - looks or practicality?

Its a natural question for shoppers considering Acuras newest sport utility vehicle, the ZDX.
The new-for-2010 ZDX pushes the styling envelope with a sleek, coupe-like body that rides high above the pavement, SUV-style. But the tradeoffs include compromised visibility out the back and lengthy front doors that can bang into adjacent cars in parking lots when passengers try to exit the vehicle.
The ZDX, arriving in showrooms Dec. 15, comes with the most modernly luxurious interior of any Acura, including handsome, closed-loop carpeting and hand-applied leather strips on the dashboard. But back seat room is surprisingly cramped, and the ZDX roofline can cause some passengers to bump their heads as they enter.
With a starting manufacturers suggested retail price, including destination charge, of $46,305, the ZDX is $1,335 less than the base price of Acuras most expensive vehicle in base form, the RL sedan.
But where the RLs top model has a retail price of $55,060, the top ZDX, which was the test model, is $56,855.
Such lofty pricing puts the five-seat ZDX, which comes standard with a 300-horsepower V-6, automatic transmission, leather-trimmed seats and all-wheel drive, in the company of other high-brow luxury SUVs.
The 300-horsepower, 2010 BMW X6, for example, has a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $57,125. Meantime, the 2010 Infiniti FX35 with 303-horsepower V-6 starts at $43,265.
Acura officials reportedly only expect some 6,000 ZDX sales annually, which would make it the second-lowest-volume Acura after the RL, based on calendar 2008 sales results.
Despite its looks, this newest Acura uses some familiar Acura parts. The ZDX rides on the platform thats used by the eight-passenger Acura MDX, and the ZDX is powered by the 3.7-liter, single overhead cam V-6 thats in the MDX.
The two SUVs, as well as the Acura RL, use the companys Super Handling all-wheel drive system that can distribute engine torque between front and rear wheels as well as between right-side and left-side wheels. The ZDX weighs almost as much as the MDX, too - 4,424 pounds for the base ZDX, compared with the base MDXs 4,550 pounds.
And yet, the ZDX is less of an SUV. It can tow just 1,500 pounds, maximum, which is as much as the lighter-weight Honda CR-V with four-cylinder engine. In contrast, the MDX has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
The ZDX cargo capacity, even with the second-row seats folded down, is just 55.8 cubic feet. This compares with the nearly 60 cubic feet in BMWs X6 and the 62 cubic feet in Infinitis FX35.
The test ZDX was comfortable, though still let in some road bumps, when its suspension was set on "comfort" mode. When moved to the "sport" mode, the firmness in the ride became pronounced, with passengers feeling some road bumps sharply. The different mode settings change damper settings on the suspension as well as steering. In "comfort" mode, the steering on the test ZDX had a light feel.
The interior was decently quiet, even as the ZDX rode on the biggest standard tires ever on an Acura - 19-inch Michelin all-season tires. The vehicles raked profile kept wind noise at a minimum. Like several other Honda vehicles, the ZDX includes an active noise control system to keep unwanted sounds away from passengers.
But it was awkward to step over the multiple sills at the doorway entrances of this SUV.
I also disliked the smallness of the side windows in the ZDX doors and both the thickness and positioning of the metal pillars around the windshield. The rear window was constricted, too, providing limited views of cars behind me.

In fact, when cars pulled up right behind my rear bumper, I couldnt see their headlights or hood, only their windshield and roof. The combination of blocked views made me feel a bit closed in inside the ZDX and hesitant about whether I was seeing everything around me.
As a result, I appreciated that the test model was the top-of-the-line ZDX that included amber blind-spot lights that illuminated at each front door to tell me if a vehicle was next to me.
I also had to use the rearview camera when backing up. Theres simply no way to see much through the smallish rear window on the tailgate.
Still, I have to mention the well-done panoramic roof with two sunshades thats standard on the ZDX. With both roller shades moved out of the way, the roof provided a sunny ambience.
The tester was loaded with all kinds of other nifty features, including a large display screen with navigation map and Acuras premium ELS audio system.
The ZDX doesnt do well on fuel. Premium gasoline is required, and the government mileage rating is just 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
I had good power - and needed it - to move the hefty-feeling ZDX around town and on highways. Torque peaks at 270 foot-pounds at 4,500 rpm. But I managed only 16.8 mpg in travel that was 70 percent city driving.
The ZDX, by the way, has Acuras first six-speed automatic transmission, and in the tester, there were times when it felt as if the tranny was wondering what gear it should be in. Then, it shifted noticeably.
The ZDX comes standard with most safety equipment, including curtain air bags, traction control, electronic stability control and even Trailer Stability Assist. The federal government has not posted ZDX crash test ratings.

              • Acura ZDX A Fine Luxury Car!

                http://www.kypost.com/content/news/l...KcTG-SnOw.cspx

                BY FRANK A. AUKOFER
                Scripps Howard News Service

                Automobiles evolve in mysterious ways.

Just when you think you have them classified according to Darwinian principles, a mutant comes along to mess with the system.

Once upon a time, cars were cars and trucks were trucks. Then we developed something called the sport utility vehicle, which really was a truck but was used like a car, mostly.

When we figured out the SUV, along came crossover utility vehicles, which really were cars and were actually used like cars, except when people used them as trucks.

At least we had them generally categorized. They were tall station wagons, with five to eight passenger seating and optional all-wheel drive if you wanted to venture off the pavement or lived in an area of nasty climes. Some could actually tow fairly heavy trailers.

But then the car companies, ever alert to identifying and exploiting eccentricities in the body politic, started to tinker with the formulas. Infiniti, for example, cobbled up something called the FX, which was neither SUV nor CUV but a very heavy and very powerful four-door hatchback jacked up tall like an SUV. Of course, nobody called it a hatchback, which could have been fatal in the U.S. market.

Then BMW chipped in with its peculiar entry. It had the mouth-filling title of X6 xDrive 35i, which it christened as a sport activity coupe, despite its four doors. It was, and is, an ungainly-looking fastback hatchback perched precariously high on its suspension parts.

But because it came from BMW, which knows a great deal about performance and handling dynamics, it was forgiven its visual assault and BMW even brought out a 555-horsepower Arnold Schwarzenegger model with a price tag north of 100 grand.

All of this brings us to the 2010 Acura ZDX, which settles into the mutant strain of the BMW X6, although the Acura folks say they were scrambling the molecules at least as early as the alchemists at BMW.

That's all part of the mysterious evolution in automobile design. It takes roughly four years to bring an all-new vehicle to the market, and it is always done in secrecy that would shame the CIA. So how is it that BMW unleashes the X6 and less than two years later we gaze upon the ZDX?

Some of it has to do with the fact that automotive designers are something like members of Rotary International. They meet regularly with like-minded people, go to some of the same conventions, read the same professional publications and are susceptible to fads like the rest of us.

Whatever the cause, the ZDX comes from the same design dish as the X6, though with significant differences. It is unabashedly luxurious and moderately expensive, as befits the Acura orientation. But it also demonstrates restraint. There's only one power plant, a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6.

Moreover, although it's heavy at 4,462 pounds in the tested Advanced model, it is neither as porky nor as expensive as the 4,894-pound X6. The Acura starts at $46,305, where the X6 checks in at nearly 11 grand more. With options, of course, they both soar higher.

The ZDX, though it has all-wheel drive, rears up on its suspension and is based on the seven-passenger MDX crossover, has a rather slick look about it, with sculptured lines and sensuous haunches. It is taller than a sports sedan but shorter than an SUV, which means that its seats are about fanny high for an average-size human.

Of course, its fastback design -- referred to as a "torpedo body" in the era of World War II -- involves compromises. Though there's airy, elbow-stretching room up front, the sharply raked roofline causes even modestly-proportioned back seat denizens to bump noggins on the headliner. The middle person must balance on a hard cushion and lean against the folded armrest.

Behind them is a cargo area that measures 26 cubic feet, but some of it is hidden below the floor and behind panels on both sides. The panels can be removed to expose extra space to accommodate golf bags, the idea being that Mr. and Mrs. Baby Boomer and a couple of friends can do a foursome at the club.

That's actually part of the idea. Acura designers say the ZDX is really designed for a loving couple who like to steal away for clandestine weekends but also like to be noticed in a stylishly impractical vehicle.

Practicality aside, the ZDX is a fine luxury car, more useful than a coupe, with a classy interior, solid down-the-road performance, decent though not outstanding handling and an array of features second to none.

The test car had a new six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift controls and the $10,550 Advanced package of options, which included adaptive cruise control, a braking system that can reduce the severity of collisions, a blind-spot warning system, heated and cooled front seats, navigation, an ELS surround sound audio system, XM satellite radio with real-time traffic and weather, and tri-zone climate control. Of course, it also had all the latest safety equipment.

                  • First Drive: 2010 Acura ZDX!

                    http://www.nationalpost.com/cars/story.html?id=2374913

Handout photo The Acura ZDX is being marketed as a means of escape for empty nesters, but let's face it: It's a two-ton-plus sport ute

In an all too rare moment of personal clarity, I actually "get" Acura's advertising campaign urging consumers not to think of the ZDX as "new" but rather to think of it as "next." If one looks at the popularity of the sport-utility vehicle starting not with the first-
generation Ford Explorer in 1990 and not with the Jeep Cherokee in 1984 but with the Jeep Wagoneer way back in 1963 (notice I said popularity, not origin), there is a 47-year history of conventional, square-box, station wagon design married to a four-wheel-drive chassis. Far more recently, with models such as Nissan's Murano and Infiniti FX line and Lexus's RX progeny, automakers have added a more fastback style to the traditional two-box shape - but that only went so far. New models such as the BMW X6 and now the ZDX are re-jigging the SUV formula through the creation of four-door sport coupes.
Less easy to swallow is the "passionate getaway" tagline Acura uses to define the ZDX - that of a different type of personal luxury vehicle. Acura suggests its California studio designed and developed ZDX is intended primarily "to provide a means of freedom and escape for two adults and their cargo, whether that's luggage for a weekend, sporting equipment, antiques or gardening supplies." Frankly, that makes me cringe. If my wife and I are going to spend our upcoming empty nest years "freedoming" and escaping, it will be behind the wheel of a roadster (best-case scenario) or car-based sport coupe (compromise), not a two-ton-plus sport-ute. Even if our escaping requires the need for an all-weather/all-season vehicle with four-wheel drive to get to the cottage or ski lodge, I would prefer Acura's smaller, sportier RDX. That in sport coupe styling might better capture my attention.

While escaping is a laudable goal, there's the little matter of day-to-day living - going to work, getting groceries, ferrying the kids to their extra-
curricular activities. Motoring about in-town, I found the ZDX out of its element. The SUV drove big, beyond its mid-sized sport-ute dimensions - it shares the same platform and drivetrain as the more conventional MDX. My wife made a rather astute observation, noting I looked uncomfortable behind the wheel. The problem is the ZDX's styling, particularly its sightlines. Even with my height (6-foot-2) I couldn't see the SUV's front corners, never mind the protruding shark-like grille. And the rear views are atrocious, with a letterbox-like slit of a rear window and blind spots behind the back pillars large enough to hide a pachyderm thanks to the fastback roofline's sharp angle. Proper alignment of the rear-view mirrors and the standard backup camera lessened the problem but couldn't completely eliminate it.
The ZDX is a far happier vehicle out on the open road, cruising along in quiet, smooth-riding comfort. There, the responsive, 300-horsepower 3.7-litre VTEC V6 burbles with contentment. The engine is mated to a new Sequential SportShift six-speed manumatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Drop the shifter into Sport mode, bang away on the paddles and the ZDX moves with an alacrity that belies its size. One hundred kilometres an hour is only 7.3 seconds away. Passing power is equally impressive - 4.6 seconds to pull off an 80-to-120-km/h manoeuvre.
There's grip to go with that power and Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system is standard. It's a superb system, actively varying the torque distribution first between the front and rear axles, and then between the left and right rear wheels, maximizing available traction. This torque vectoring, as Acura calls it, operates automatically and seamlessly, allowing SH-AWD to overdrive the outside rear wheel up to 1.7% faster than the front wheels. This allows the ZDX to better rotate around corners while minimizing understeer.

There's no getting around the fact that the ZDX's exterior styling is controversial. When I look at it, I see a Nissan 370Z that's been bombarded by gamma rays, turning it into the SUV equivalent of the Incredible Hulk. Everybody I talked to had an opinion to express - whether asked for or not - the majority of it less than kind. Yet, as polarizing as the outside is, the interior is modern, comfortable (for front-seat occupants, anyway) and, courtesy of the available Technology package, a gadget geek's delight. The cabin leads off with hand-stitched leather for the dashboard - a first for Acura - door panels and sculpted centre console. It is also well lit thanks to extensive use of LEDs along with the massive panoramic sunroof with dual automatic sunshades. The Technology package adds several key features including a navigation system with voice recognition, an Acura/ELS Surround premium audio system and a multi-view rear camera.
While the ZDX is a five-seater, taller-than-average adults will probably find rear-seat legroom and/or headroom somewhat compromising. Behind those seats, there are 26.3 cubic feet of space - 55.8 cu. ft. when the seats are folded flat. The cargo area can also be expanded for longer objects by removing side panels in the cargo compartment sidewalls. Additionally, there is an under-floor storage area that provides 2.2 cu. ft. of secure space.

I have to admit the ZDX leaves me baffled. As I said earlier, I get the concept - sporty, fastback-styled SUV - but it's the execution I'm having problems with, particularly the visibility issues. Not nearly as practical as the MDX in terms of passenger space and capacity, cargo room or towing ability, the ZDX is too big to be truly fun to drive and too compromised to be truly useful.

                              • ELS Surround(R) Premium Audio System Featured On 2010 Acura ZDX(R) 4-Door Luxury Sports Coupe !

                                DETROIT, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ --

The 2010 Acura ZDX® features the most advanced ELS Surround® Premium Audio System yet produced for Acura – designed in collaboration with Acura and Panasonic engineers to offer extended frequency range, lower distortion, enhanced clarity and transparency, and a studio-like audio experience developed specifically for Acura's dramatic all new 4-door luxury sports coupe.

Designed and tuned to match the vehicle's interior acoustic characteristics, the latest generation 2010 Acura with the ELS Surround Premium Audio System (with either the Technology Package or Advance Package) boasts an impressive 435 watts of power. The system drives a total of 10 speakers, comprising titanium dome tweeters, an array of 6.7-inch Super Dynamic Range mid-range and bass drivers, and a downward-firing 8-inch diameter subwoofer with its own 100-watt PWM amplifier that extends the system frequency response down to an amazingly low 16 Hz.
Since its introduction on the 2004 Acura TL, the ELS Surround Premium Audio System — developed in collaboration with multi-Grammy® Award-winning producer/engineer Elliot "Els" Scheiner — has drawn the highest praise from critics and customers alike. With an emphasis on clarity, definition and faithful music reproduction from a variety of sources, the ELS Surround Premium Audio System is designed to deliver a studio-like audio experience.
"The goal of the ELS system in the Acura is to provide the listener with the excitement and emotional impact of actually being in a studio," said Gary Evert, chief engineer and Acura ZDX project leader. "Elliot brings his extensive professional studio recording experience to help create the most involving and musical sounding experience that you could ever find in an automotive premium audio system."

Personally involved in each phase of development for the Acura ZDX, Scheiner translates his expertise as a professional recording engineer and producer to tune the ELS Surround premium audio system to the vehicle's specific acoustic environment.
"Creating a new, custom-tuned premium audio system for such a beautiful vehicle as the ZDX is always an opportunity," said Elliot Scheiner, collaborator on Panasonic's ELS Surround Premium Audio System. "It's the same feeling that I get when I work with a new musician in the studio. The ELS system is now available on the TL, TSX, RDX and MDX, and I approached each system as I would a different musical artist.
"The ELS system for the ZDX involved hours spent listening, tuning, driving on the test track and retuning, using as many music sound sources as possible. When I finally heard the finished production system, I was thrilled that we were really able to bring the studio experience into the ZDX at what I feel is the highest musical level possible."

                                Ten-Speaker Power:

The ELS Surround Premium Audio System's 10 speakers create an accurate and dynamic listening experience for all ZDX seating positions. Compact 1.5-inch titanium-dome tweeters are positioned in each A-pillar with a 3-inch Super Dynamic Range (SDR) driver centered in the top of the instrument panel. A 6.7-inch SDR driver is positioned low in each of the four door panels. Two forward-firing, 3-inch wide-dispersion speakers are located in the rear roof pillars—one on each side. An 8-inch diameter, downward-firing subwoofer driven by a dedicated 100-watt amplifier is placed under the rear cargo floor in a special 25-liter acoustic enclosure, providing powerful bass response and very low distortion over an extended frequency range, including down to an exceptionally low 16Hz. A 435-watt Digital Signal Processing amplifier drives the speaker array.
"The technical team at Panasonic was faced with the challenge of creating an outstanding musical experience within the unique interior cabin of the Acura ZDX," said Tom Dunn, marketing group manager for Panasonic Automotive Systems Company of America . "Listening to the new ELS system in the ZDX shows how the team responded to this challenge and really exceeded all expectations. Our ongoing collaborative relationship with Acura and Elliot Scheiner has resulted in ELS Surround being recognized as one of the benchmarks for automotive premium audio systems."
