Can this season become even worse for Mclaren- Honda?
The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai wasn’t much different from what we expected. Lewis Hamilton won the race, with Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel finishing second and third respectively. Ferrari was again competitive as Kimi Raikkonen ended up in the fourth place after a solid race.
Sunday’s race proved also that Mclaren- Honda will probably have another disappointing season as Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button finished 12th and 14th respectively, one lap behind the winner Lewis Hamilton.
After three races, they have zero points, facing problems with both the car and the engine. However, everybody in the team was arguing that progress has been made since Australia. After Saturday’s qualifying, McLaren's racing director Eric Boullier said: “As both drivers said, if you look at the positions, obviously there is not much improvement since Australia.
“But if you look at the time difference between the fastest cars and us, there is significant improvement.”
Fernando Alonso added that in Australia Mclaren was 4.5 seconds behind, in Malaysia 3.5 and yesterday 2.5 seconds. Boullier said it was really positive for the entire team that they managed to get two cars to the finish with no issues whatsoever during the race. But, they should not feel happy with that.
The main problem Honda faces is that the engine is too unreliable to run at full power (in Australia it had to be turned down even further than planned because the company was afraid of losing the engine from even the first race of the season).
In Shanghai, the situation was pretty much the same as Honda motorsport boss Yasuhisa Arai confirmed: “Although we were running our hybrid at full power, we still need improvement across all the components.”
This along with the car’s inefficiency makes the situation worse. In Melbourne, Button said the car was "about equal" to the Red Bull and Sauber in the corners. However, this is not exactly encouraging as both Sauber and Red Bull had massive problems with the driveability of the Renault engine.
Fernando Alonso said: “We are still a bit blind with the car; we still need to extract a lot of information from the package and to learn a lot more about this car in order to extract its maximum.”
That statement brings us to the situation with the two-time world champion. In his first race with his new team, Alonso retired. Yesterday, he finished 12th. On the other hand, his replacement in Ferrari has already won the Malaysian Grand Prix, finishing third in the other two races.
So, was the decision to leave Ferrari the right one for the Spanish driver? He said he didn’t regret leaving Ferrari and the only way to change his mind is if the Italian team wins the championship.
“I was in Ferrari for five years, I finished second three times, I didn’t want this to happen for a fourth time. We were competitive in the beginning of the season but we had never won in November when everything was on the line. I want to win in November,” Alonso said.
Although we are just in the beginning of the season, there is little expectation for the British team to be able to win in November as Alonso wants or even in the next season as Boullier admitted it might take up to two years for the team to be close or equal to Mercedes who are now having the best car.
If this prediction is true, there is a possibility Fernando Alonso will try to leave Mclaren and sign with a more competitive team in order to win his third title before retiring from racing.
In the meantime, the action continues this Sunday when the fourth race will take place in Bahrain. Jenson Button is not so optimistic, though: “We go to Bahrain, hoping for more progress, although the circuit configuration doesn’t suit us, so heading to Europe will hopefully work out a little bit better for the team. We need to improve at every race because we’re quite a way back.”
With that in mind, we can predict that the situation will be pretty much the same for Mclaren-Honda this Sunday, with actual improvement coming to the next Grand Prix in Spain which will take place in May 10th.

Honda plan to 'power up' McLaren engine at Bahrain Grand Prix
McLaren racing director Eric Boullier says Honda will “power up” its power unit in Bahrain after improved reliability in the Chinese Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso finished 12th and Jenson Button 14th in China, with both cars finishing the race having failed to do so in Malaysia. While Honda has been working to improve reliability the power unit has been run conservatively, but after seeing the chequered flagwhile running “aggressive engine maps”, Boullier says Bahrain should allow the team to make another big step.
Asked by F1i if the race result was disappointing, Boullier replied: “No, frustrating yes because we are not where we want to be but not disappointing because we had no issues at all.
“So there was a major step in terms of the reliability package this weekend so there’s no issue. This is a good achievements, and now we know we can power up the engine. It’s only with the same base but we know we have some potential we can unlock with this engine, so it’s OK.”
With McLaren’s race pace looking more competitive than its qualifying, Boullier says it’s down to the way other teams can run their engines over one lap.
“We knew this because some of the other engine manufacturers have a special mapping for qualifying but during the race they have to turn it down. So in the race it is more in our favour, let’s say. It’s step by step and the good thing is we know what’s left.
“Reliability was a constant problem for us so today is a very good achievement and we know which steps we can still get out of this engine so already from Bahrain we can power up a little bit the power unit. In Barcelona then we have another spec coming, we keep going and improving every race.”
