2013 Buick Verano Turbo vs. 2013 Acura ILX 2.4
Answering The $30,000 Entry-Level Luxury Question

Twenty years ago, a comparison between an entry-level Buick and its Acura equivalent would have matched a Skylark against an Integra. The unfair battle would have resulted in the compact American's defeat in nearly every measurable category, as the Japanese competitor was arguably at the height of its powers.

Yet the automotive industry has flipped, twisted and merged itself through more than just a recession over the past two decades – it's morphed into a whole different ballgame. Pitting a Buick against an Acura makes perfect sense today, as both automakers are peddling new entry-level models designed to scoop up buyers seeking premium features, luxury appointments and fuel efficiency in a reasonably priced compact sedan package.

Today's battle is between the Verano and the ILX. Instead of wringing out the base models and setting ourselves up for a day-long yawnfest, we chose the most powerful and dynamic variants of each, configuring them with six-speed manual transmissions to liven the pace. This unquestionably made our behind-the-wheel excursion more interesting, but we soon realized that our enthusiast-oriented decision would introduce a whole new set of headaches.

The Buick Verano was launched at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show as a new-for-2012 model. Although it shares Delta II platforms with the Chevrolet Cruze and Opel Astra, General Motors has gone the extra mile, giving the more premium Verano its own unique styling inside and out, and it's fitted the four-door sedan with laminated glass, triple door seals and a long list of other sound-deadening upgrades to separate it from its lesser sibling. Buick calls the cabin "library quiet," and its interior features an appointment level on par with its larger LaCrosse sibling.

Both the Buick and Acura are built in the United States.

The Acura ILX was launched at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show as a new-for-2013 model. The four-door sedan shares platforms with the Honda Civic, but the automaker resculpted its panels to change its proportions and imbued it with a more befitting interior complete with upscale switchgear. Signature Acura touches such as the dual arched instrument panel and a red push-button starter to the right of the steering wheel complete the transformation.

Both the Buick and Acura are built in the United States (the Verano in Orion Township, Michigan, and the ILX in Greenburg, Indiana), and each is offered in several trims with a choice of engines. While the base models of each start in the mid-$20,000 range, we chose to compare the range-topping trims, as they are similarly equipped and very closely matched in overall performance.

Our 2013 ILX, a six-speed manual with the Premium package trim, arrived painted in Silver Moon over ebony leather carrying an as-tested price of $30,095. The only addendum to its $29,200 MSRP was the mandatory destination fee of $895. Standard equipment includes full power accessories, an eight-way power-operated driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth and a 350-watt premium audio system. Navigation, conspicuously missing from our ILX, is not offered on this particular model (yet).

Navigation, conspicuously missing from our ILX, is not offered on this particular model.

Under the Acura's hood lies a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 201 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 170 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm. The transverse-mounted engine, basically shared with the Honda Civic Si and Acura TSX, sends its power through a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox to the front wheels and earns an EPA fuel economy rating of 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The suspension is an independent MacPherson strut design up front with a multi-link setup in the rear. There are disc brakes at all corners and its 17-inch alloys are wrapped in 215/45R17 Michelin HX MXM4 all-season grand touring rubber.

Our 2013 Verano, a six-speed manual in Premium trim, was painted in Luxo Blue Metallic over Choccachino (honest) premium leather and carried an as-tested price of $31,695. The base price ($29,105) was bumped up with the addition of a power sunroof ($900), satellite radio with navigation ($795) and a mandatory destination fee ($895). Standard equipment includes full power accessories, six-way power-operated driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, Bose premium audio and navigation bundled with Buick Intellilink connectivity.

Nestled under the hood of the Buick is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 250 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 260 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. The transverse-mounted engine, shared with the Buick Regal GS, sends its power through a six-speed manual gearbox to the front wheels to earn an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The suspension is independent with MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam augmented by a Watts Z-link in the rear. There are disc brakes at all corners and its 18-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in 235/45R18 Continental ContiProContact all-season grand touring rubber.

Both are within an inch of each other in wheelbase, but the Verano is about four inches longer.

Parked side-by-side, the Buick Verano is wider, taller and longer than the Acura, but only marginally. A tape measure reveals that both are within an inch of each other in wheelbase (105.7 inches to 105.1), but the Verano is about four inches longer overall (183.9 inches vs. 179.1). Place each on a scale, and the Buick is the heavier of the pair with a curb weight of 3,300 pounds (compared to the ILX curb weight of 2,978 pounds), That said, both carry about 61 percent of their weight over the front wheels – typical for a front-drive car.

To compare the Verano against the ILX, I teamed up with Translogic contributor Kyle Thibaut and Autoblog photographer extraordinaire Drew Phillips and headed out on a nice day trip that would bring our near-lux sedans from sea level up to Southern California's snow line (about 5,000 feet elevation this time of year) and back down. The route offered plenty of urban driving, wide-open mountain canyon roads and mundane freeway travel. After loading the center consoles with Red Bull, Swedish Fish and beef jerky, we filled each tank with fuel and began our comparison.

First impressions are critical – emotional appeal is what moves most cars out of the showroom – so after a brief orientation, we parked the two compact luxury sedans side-by-side and took a good look at each.

Between the two, it was the Verano's design that stole all of the attention.

Between the two, it was the Verano's design that stole all of the attention. The sedan has a fresh, upscale and purposeful design that we felt definitely projected a more premium vibe. Phillips: "At first blush, the Buick really stands out to me as an attractive car, in part due to the blue paint and the beautiful brown leather interior. I know Buick has made an effort to build a car for a younger demographic, and in this car, they've succeeded." Yet there was some dissent. Thibaut called out GM's platform sharing immediately: "It's clearly a Chevrolet Cruze... and I'm not sure if Buick's design language does enough to attract younger buyers, especially with those rear chrome eyebrows." We all felt that the Verano's "Angry Bird" rear lights were a bit distracting, and we also found it odd that GM declined to spill the beans on our tester's turbocharged powerplant. "There should be visual differentiators like wheels and fascia, and performance indicators like a lower sport suspension and brakes," said Thibaut. "The only indicator is a little red 'T' badge on the trunklid."

The Acura ILX isn't a bad-looking sedan either, but its bland overall design means it has an even more difficult time removing itself from its Honda roots. "Looks a lot like the Civic," said Thibaut before peering inside. "The styling appears to reflect a 'make it work' attitude and the interior design borrows from Acura's design language, but in a more minimal way," he added. Upon closer inspection, all of us agreed that the fit and finish were below what we expected from a premium brand. Everything from the inexpensive appearing headlight assembly to the unsubstantial sound of the doors closing reminded us more of a Honda.

The ILX interior wasn't even as nice as the emergency-refresh 2013 Civic.

Buick also took top mentions for interior appointments, build quality and comfort with its warm and inviting cabin. "The interior is at the level of a luxury sedan, just smaller," said Thibaut in a subtle reference to its bigger LaCrosse sibling. We likewise expected premium materials in the ILX, especially as Acura is better established as a premium marque, but the small sedan let us down. Its interior wasn't even as nice as the emergency-refresh 2013 Civic. "I've seen better leather on a Kia," blasted Thibaut. Rumor has it that Acura will be making a few Civic-like upgrades to the ILX in the near future, and it can't come soon enough.

We settled into each of the cabins, turned on a pair of Motorola two-way walkie talkies, and aimed our hoods eastward.

The first part of the drive was an exercise in carving canyons as we forced each sedan to climb nearly a mile in altitude over a 20-mile distance. The two-lane road was free of traffic, so we were able to push the ILX and Verano to our comfort levels. As neither is touted as a sport sedan, our expectations were not particularly high.

Buick's hot little turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine emerged as a workhorse, pulling the Verano strongly up each of the mountains. "Lots of power once the turbo kicks in," said Kyle over the radio, verbally expressing what each of us had been thinking the whole time. But a good engine is nothing without a competent transmission, and that's exactly where the Buick fell on its face. Its sloppy six-speed gearbox soon attracted a storm of complaints: "The manual transmission seems like an afterthought in the Verano Turbo, feeling vague and uncommunicative. In fact, the gearing of the six-speed transmission feels far too high, often leaving the turbo-four out of its powerband," said a frustrated Phillips. When the engine was spun to redline, the fuel flow was abruptly cut resulting in an immediate loss of power. This annoyed all of us, but it particularly chafed Thibaut: "The very aggressive rev limiter is incredibly annoying. This frustrating and awkward manual transmission is the reason people don't buy manuals anymore – why even offer a stick shift if it's going to be this bad?"

The engine in the Acura, an automaker long known for its wonderful naturally aspirated four-cylinder mills, screamed effortlessly all the way to its soft redline with each throw of its short-shift lever. Power was obviously down compared to the Buick, but the shorter gearing and more precise shifter action in the ILX made it the favorite in the mountains. "Great Honda engine note all the way past 7,200 rpm... and the manual transmission is fun – clutch and shifter are robust and offer quick shifts." More test notes: "The ILX sounds like a racecar for the street. While it may not be the most pleasant thing to listen to on the freeway as it hovers above 3,000 rpm, it's an addictive noise when you're engaged in spirited driving."

After the first stop, everyone fought over the keys to the Acura.

After the first stop, halfway up the mountain, everyone fought over the keys to the Acura. It didn't seem to have the power or even the lateral grip of the Buick, but it was much more communicative in terms of steering, chassis and throttle response. "The ILX is undoubtedly the better car to throw around on a canyon road," said Phillips matter-of-factly. "Not that many buyers will purchase it for this type of mission, but the car is certainly capable of an entertaining Sunday drive." The steering on the Buick felt artificial and vague, and its superior cabin isolation was discomforting when pushed hard, as the drive felt disconnected from the pavement. Said Thibaut succinctly: "I can't communicate with the road in the Verano."

A similar lack of engagement was found with the Buick's manual gearbox, as it seemed out of place. The Verano's clutch pedal felt disconnected, and its shifter sloppy. Some of us complained about missing shifts. The Acura, on the other hand, was nearly perfect with a smooth clutch and tactile lever action. "The ILX's shifter is its saving grace, allowing for gear changes that are both accurate and lightning fast with a flick of the wrist," said Drew. Everybody agreed.

In terms of real-world acceleration, the ILX is quicker off the line thanks to its slick shifter and lower gearing. The more powerful Verano bogs and chokes off the line, but its more powerful engine doesn't have any problem passing the Acura once it hits its stride. Passing maneuvers were much less stressful in the Buick too, thanks to the instant torque the turbocharger helped deliver. We estimate both will hit 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds, give or take a few a few tenths.

"Going from the Verano Turbo to the ILX, the first thing you notice is the noise."

After dropping down the other side of the mountain, we stopped for more road trip snacks before starting our 100-mile highway portion of the comparison.

Within minutes, the rosy hue encircling the ILX and it sporty demeanor began to fade as the Verano's vault-like chassis, whisper-quiet interior and suite of amenities began to win each of us over. With the Buick's agonizing manual transmission left untouched in sixth gear for the duration, we focused on its the audio system, navigation package and creature comforts. It was almost an unfair comparison. The no-nonsense cabin of the Acura, acceptable when focused on sporty driving, became noisy, with an annoying engine drone when cruising at highway speeds. Thibaut called it, "way too loud, and it seems as if there is a lot of coarse noise coming from the underbelly." Phillips mirrored his comments nearly spot-on. "Going from the Verano Turbo to the ILX, the first thing you notice is the noise. It's a loud car, with everything from tires to wind to the engine contributing."

Both the Acura and Buick were competent freeway companions, but the ILX's engine was spinning about 1,000 rpm faster than the turbocharged engine under the hood of the Verano, and its cabin was much louder and more reflective – the noise just seemed to bounce around. There was no contest about which was the better cross-country cruiser, the Buick owned the highway portion of our comparison.

We longed for a Buick with a slushbox and wished for more amenities in the Acura.

The city schlep was interesting. Our three-man team preferred the Buick's cabin and connectivity, but once again, we didn't like its transmission. The Acura was more engaging, but it fell short on creature comforts and overall refinement. We longed for a Buick with a slushbox and wished for more amenities in the Acura.

We ended our drive at a gas station. Despite following each other nose-to-tail, the trip odometer of the Verano read 196.8 miles while the ILX had only counted 194.7 miles – chalk it up to a one-percent odometer error. We pumped 6.78 gallons of premium unleaded into the Acura and 7.77 gallons of premium unleaded into the Buick, for a trip fuel economy of 28.7 mpg and 25.1 mpg, respectively. The Buick cost us $4.60 more in fuel for the identical trip.

A few minutes later, as Phillips set up his equipment for sunset photography, we mulled over which sedan won the comparison – as we don't hand out participation trophies at Autoblog, one of these two was going home a loser.

Our final vote was tallied, and the decision was unanimous...

Our final vote was tallied, and the decision was unanimous – we all preferred the Buick Verano Turbo over the Acura ILX Premium.

Throughout the entire comparison, the ILX simply couldn't shake its Civic roots. It was constantly referred to as "the Honda" during our radio chatter (we never once called the Verano "the Chevrolet"), and we couldn't stop thinking about the still-outstanding Civic Si each time we slid behind the Acura's wheel. "I want to like the ILX, but the car simply doesn't make sense to me. The interior isn't nice enough to appeal to me as an entry-level luxury sedan, and the performance isn't good enough to justify its lack of quality in the interior. At the end of the day, nothing about the car stands out enough to make me want to choose it," Drew observed. Thibaut questioned why the low-volume ILX Premium model was even offered. "This particular trim does not need to exist. The question is, are a few premium features hiding behind an Acura badge worth 125-percent of the price of the Si? The answer is a million times no."

"The Verano feels like a cheap version of an expensive car, while the ILX feels like an expensive version of a cheap car."

None of us questioned the sticker price of the Buick. "The Verano Turbo is the better entry-level luxury sedan. It's more comfortable, quieter and a more practical powertrain." Premium materials aside, Kyle went out of his way to point out that the Verano had more useable interior space (especially in the rear seats), a larger trunk, bigger brakes, larger wheels and more horsepower. "Clearly, the Verano is the best value by a long shot," he concluded. So much so, that two of us questioned whether it was a better value than the only marginally larger, yet more expensive, Buick Regal.

But interestingly enough, none of us would recommend the Verano Turbo with its manual gearbox – nearly all of our gripes had to do with that lifeless transmission – the no-cost six-speed automatic is the proper entry-level luxury buyer's choice.

With the sun dropped below the horizon and the photography complete, we climbed back into our cars for the short drive back to our original meeting spot. After a few moments of silence, a voice came over the radio airwaves with an encapsulating sentence: "The Verano feels like a cheap version of an expensive car, while the ILX feels like an expensive version of a cheap car." Although our vehicles were hundreds of yards apart and moving down the highway at better than 70 mph, each of us realized that we were nodding our heads in agreement – it would be difficult to summarize our comparison more succinctly.

Production 2014 Acura MDX to Debut in New York with 3.5-liter V6 Engine and FWD Option

Following the release of the 2014 Acura MDX Prototype (pictured above) in Detroit earlier this year, Honda’s luxury division has announced the debut of the production version of its mid-size SUV at the New York International Auto Show on March 27.

The three-row, seven-seater luxury SUV will ride on a new platform, with Honda promising an enhanced ride comfort, a more versatile cabin, increased fuel efficiency and improved dynamic performance.

Although Acura didn’t reveal any specs related to fuel economy and performance, the company said the 2014 MDX will be powered by a 3.5-liter gasoline i-VTEC V6 (the same unit develops 310 hp on the RLX), fitted with direct-injection and Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) – with the latter meaning the engine will use three of its cylinders when not needed to save fuel.

Compared with previous generations, the 2014 Acura MDX will be offered for the first time with 2-wheel-drive variants, in addition to Honda’s SH-AWD system. The new model also has a longer wheelbase that allegedly increases second-row legroom and improves access to third-row seats. It also contributes to a better ride quality, according to Honda.

The 2014 MDX will feature the next-generation of the AcuraLink Connectivity System and Jewel Eye LED headlamps, just like those seen on the pre-production concept. Expect the production-version to look almost identical to the concept, sans the flashy wheels, bumper trims and possibly the headlights’ intricate interior structure.

As for active safety features, the new MDX will be available with an array of technologies for driver assistance and visibility, including the Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and the optional Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, Blind Spot Information (BSI), Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Honda expects the 2014 MDX to achieve top-level safety ratings, including a 5-star overall score from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, thanks to the SUV’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering II body structure and its safety systems.

Honda’s Acura Luxury Unit Seeks Buyers Among Basketball, Golf Fans

Honda Motor Co.’s advertising push for its 2014 Acura RLX flagship sedan will include a steady stream of television spots during the NCAA college basketball tournament and professional golf tours and events including the Masters and U.S. Open.
The campaign, which also includes print, digital and mobile ads, is meant to boost the Acura luxury brand’s profile among affluent buyers who may have previously passed it by on their way to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz dealerships.
Beginning in April and continuing throughout the summer, the company plans to keep the RLX on consumer’s radar with a variety marketing approaches including spots during cable news shows on Bloomberg and CNBC, print ads in business and lifestyle publications, and through homepage takeovers on news, sports and financial sites. Honda said it targeted the ads based on its understanding of how well-to-do prospective customers consume media.
“The all-new Acura RLX is one of the most innovative luxury sedans on the market, aimed at the affluent customers who form the heart of the premium luxury sedan market,” said Mike Accavitti, vice president of national marketing operations for Acura. “By utilizing an integrated campaign in the context of the big annual college hoops tournament, we are able to reach a large audience and still remain highly targeted.”
The RLX is powered by a 310-horsepower V6 engine and has distinctive features including “Jewel Eye” LED headlights and an all-wheel-steering system to increase its agility.
The car’s predecessor, the RL, was also a technological wonder, but it largely failed to connect with luxury buyers the way European models do. Part of its problem was a lack of brand and model recognition – something that has plagued Acura ever since it switched from earlier model names like Legend and Integra to letter names like RL, TL and TSX.
An interesting detail in the Canadian advertising video is the crew’s use of a Mercedes SUV as a camera vehicle. It is easily recognizable despite a blacked-out paint job.

Honda recalls 76,253 Acura TSX sedans for ECU corrosion issue

Honda is recalling 76,253 examples of its Acura luxury brand’s TSX sedan to address a potential corrosion problem that could lead to engine stalling.

The recall covers model year 2004-2008 TSXs sold in states that use road salts for wintertime de-icing. In a notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Administration's website, the agency warns that corrosive salts and water tracked in by a TSX driver’s footware can saturate the driver-side carpeting, which lies above the metal case that houses the electronic control unit.

Should the salts make their way through the case and eat into the ECU, the damage could cause the engine to stall.

Acura dealers will fix the issue by installing a waterproof ECU cover and replacing the ECU if it is corroded. The recall campaign is expected to begin on April 11.

Honda says that no crashes or injuries stemming from the issue have been reported.

The recall is the second that owners of 2004-2008 Acura TSX models have faced in recent years. Back in 2010, Honda called back 167,000 TSX sedans to remedy a faulty power steering hose that was at risk to prematurely deteriorate and potentially cause a vehicle fire.

        http://www.inyork.com/ci_22631467/re...014-acura-rlx?

        Review: 2014 Acura RLX

The 2014 RLX luxury sedan is the most sophisticated Acura production car in history, topping even the Acura NSX sports car that's still revered by auto enthusiasts.
Replacing the flagship Acura RL sedan this year, the RLX even has its own driving experience that comes from a new suspension and new all-wheel steering system that electronically adjusts toe-in and toe-out at the rear tires for improved tracking in curves and corners.
Designed by the man who helped craft the NSX suspension and who formerly worked on Honda's Formula 1 race team, the new, standard Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) system makes the RLX feel as if it's directly dialed in with the driver.
Also notable: Combined city/highway fuel economy for the RLX is more than 24 miles per gallon and bests Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW competitors.
The RLX's direct injection V-6 comes standard with Variable Cylinder Management that automatically deactivates some engine cylinders when they're not needed, thus saving gasoline.
Though it has the same overall length as the mid-size RL, the RLX has surprisingly generous rear-seat legroom -- 38.8 inches -- which surpasses that in the Infiniti M and Mercedes E-Class sedans.
In addition, the RLX offers new safety features, including a system that gently steers the car back into its lane if it detects wandering over the center line. This works only if there is lane marking that is detectable by the system.

Meantime, adaptive cruise control with Slow Speed Follow can bring the car to a full stop in certain circumstances if the RLX is headed for the rear-end of a stopped vehicle in front of it.
But the RLX, like its RL predecessor, is front-wheel drive, rather than the rear-wheel drive that some sporty luxury sedan purists prefer.
Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price is up only $250 from its predecessor Acura RL.
A base RLX has a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $49,345. All RLX models come with a 310-horsepower V-6 and a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The RLX also is the first top Acura sedan to include jeweled-look, light-emitting diode headlights.
Other standard equipment includes leather-trimmed seats and stitched leather instrument panel cover, moonroof, push-button start, keyless entry, three-zone climate control, Acura/ELS premium audio system with 10 speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, two sizable display screens in the dashboard and a rearview camera.
Buyers can move up through four trim levels to add navigation, lane keeping, a new Krell audio system with 14 speakers, sunshades and ventilated seats.
In comparison, the starting MSRP, including destination charge, for a rear-wheel drive 2013 Infiniti M37 is $49,605. The M37 has a 330-horsepower V-6 and seven-speed automatic, but the base audio system has six speakers and dual, not three-zone, climate control is standard. The M37 also comes with high-intensity discharge headlights, rather than LED lights.
While the federal government fuel economy ratings for the RLX are 20/31 mpg for city/highway travel, the mid-size M37 is rated at 18/26 mpg.

Another competitor, the Lexus LS 460, has a starting retail price of $72,885 and comes with a 386-horsepower V-8 and eight-speed automatic transmission. Classified as a mid-size sedan, the LS 460 is rated at 16/24 mpg in city/highway driving by the federal government.

The RLX still has some of the heavy Acura "helmet shield" design on its nose. But it's mild, and the flowing lines on the sides and strong rear end give the car a luxury appearance.
The interior of the top-of-the-line RLX with Advance package was top-notch in fit and finish, with small gaps between trim pieces and everything lined up perfectly.
This RLX included additional acoustic glass that helped keep the interior so quiet, front-seat passengers conversed in light tones.
P-AWS wasn't noticeable until the driver went around a curve at good speed and discovered how stably -- maybe the word is magically -- the 16-foot-long RLX tracked through.
The system provides more stable handling on slippery surfaces, too.
The most fascinating aspect during the test drive, perhaps, was how little the steering wheel had to be turned to keep the car on track in the curves and how balanced the sizable RLX felt.
Indeed, on mountain switchback roads, the RLX remained firmly planted and was so tenacious, its back-and-forth motions from one curve to the next created some carsickness for the driver.
The lasting impression: How the RLX molds itself to the driver's capabilities and habits, rather than forcing the driver to learn the car.
It's true the 3.5-liter V-6 is single overhead cam and only produces 310 horses and 272 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm. This is less than what many competitors deliver. But the RLX is some 160 pounds lighter than its predecessor RL, and the test RLX felt plenty powerful, even if power delivery wasn't race-car instantaneous.
Unleaded premium is the recommended fuel, so a fillup of the 18.5-gallon tank these days could cost more than $72.
Then again, with an average of 24.3 mpg during the test drive on mostly country roads and some highway travel, the RLX's range on a single tank was a good 450 miles.
The sweeping design of the dashboard away from passengers gave an airy feel to the interior.

But seat cushions could be a tad longer to better accommodate long-legged passengers, and the two display screens take some getting used to.

There are no 2013 RLs as the RLX is arriving now in showrooms as an early 2014 model.
Later this calendar year, Acura will introduce a gasoline-electric "sport" hybrid version of the RLX that promises to generate more than 370 horsepower.

Farewell Acura ZDX: Many Gawked, Few Purchased

Depending on whom you ask, Acura's ZDX is either ugly (with an F) or sexy. One fact that isn't up for debate, however, is that the swoopy crossover is a total sales dud and model-year 2013 is its last. With its high price, tiny backseat and dismal visibility, it's tough to understand the ZDX's appeal, but it's been in Acura's lineup since 2010 — so someone's been buying it. Which begs the question: Who would choose the ZDX over the more comfortable and less expensive MDX, on which it's based?
Turns out, not very many people. Few consumers were charmed enough by the ZDX to open up their wallets to the tune of $51,815, especially when the MDX starts at $44,175 and tops out at $53,800 (all prices include destination). The MDX also offers more passenger space and loads more cargo room — 83.5 cubic feet to the ZDX's 57.3. Last month, Acura sold just 25 ZDXs, not much more than the 56 it sold last February. Sales have been bleak for a while: Throughout all of 2012, Acura moved just 775 ZDXs off dealer lots, a stark comparison to the 50,854 MDXs sold last year.

According to Acura spokesman Chuck Schifsky, the ZDX's intended audience was quite different than the group who actually ended up purchasing it. Schifsky told us that the ZDX was initially aimed at baby boomers and "mature" buyers, but a larger number of Generation X, pre-family shoppers were more attracted to it. "These younger buyers picked the ZDX because they wanted a vehicle that was unique and different from the average sedan, CUV or SUV," he said.

More importantly, the car turned heads. "One of the overriding reasons buyers noted as the motivation for buying the ZDX was its unique styling," he said. According to Schifsky, although the ZDX wasn't a strong seller, it was successful in attracting new shoppers to dealerships.

Alas, this quirky vehicle's moment in the spotlight is over. "The timing is keyed to our efforts to refine the product lineup around the Acura brand direction with a focus on flagship and core models. We are also introducing a number of new products and full model changes of existing vehicles to better fulfill Acura buyers' needs," Schifsky said.
Up next for Acura is the new RLX sedan, which went on sale last week, and the 2014 Acura MDX, which will hit dealerships later this year.

Lincoln exec: Automaker has lost a generation of luxury car buyers

New York — Luxury automakers are bullish that well-heeled buyers will return to showrooms.
With the stock market hitting record highs and housing values rising, automakers are introducing a huge number of new luxury models at the New York International Auto Show.
Last year, luxury sales accounted for 11.1 percent of total U.S sales in 2012, down from 11.2 percent in 2011.
Southfield-based R.L. Polk forecasts luxury sales will rise to 11.7 percent in 2013 and 13.1 percent next year.
General Motors Co.'s is unveiling its Cadillac CTS, Volkswagen AG is showing off its Audi A3 and Hyundai is unveiling its new Equus.
BMW is showing a diesel version of its 3-Series — the 328d, while Honda is showing the Acura MDX.
Nissan's Infiniti unit is showing its QX60 hybrid SUV, Daimler AG is showing its Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG, and Jaguar Land Rover is showing the Range Rover Sport, Jaguar XJR and another new model.
Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales USA's senior vice president for automotive operations, said Tuesday the company projects the luxury segment "will be very healthy over the next few years."
"There's a lot of competitive activity there, but when you see all of our new, refreshed product line, we're very well-positioned," Carter said, referring to the company's Lexus brand.
He dismissed suggestions that all luxury brands need more German styling. "Every brand's got to stand on its own," Carter said. "It doesn't make any sense for products and brands to move closer. Customers are looking for uniqueness."
BMW has held the crown as top-selling U.S. luxury brand for two straight years, selling nearly 350,000 vehicles last year. That's about 60,000 more than Mercedes-Benz.
Until 2010, Lexus had held the top spot for 11 straight years as the top U.S. luxury brand. But Lexus sales fell due to supply shortages because of Japanese natural disasters in 2011.
But the brand rebounded last year. Lexus sold 244,000 vehicles in 2012, up 23 percent, exceeding its goal.
U.S. luxury brands have struggled, especially Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln unit. Sales of Lincoln fell 4 percent last year, and are down 25 percent in the first two months of 2013 as the company has struggled to get its new MKZ to dealers.
"We really have lost a whole generation of the luxury market. We have to acknowledge that head-on," said Matt VanDyke, Lincoln's director of global marketing, who said the brand has been off many buyers' "radar screens."
Lincoln is targeting people who want "less ostentatious" luxury vehicles, he said. "We're just at the very early stages of the complete transformation of the brand."
General Motors Co.'s Cadillac unit fell nearly 2 percent last year, but is up 32 percent in the first two months of 2013 on sales of the company's new ATS. Still, GM sells about 12 Chevrolets for every Cadillac.
Ben Poore, vice president of the Infiniti unit at Nissan North America, said the customer experience is key. He noted that luxury buyers are willing to consider switching brands. "You can't just have a good car," Poore said.
Infiniti has a new personal assistant service where owners can call for help making hotel reservations, flights, tee times, or even with trivia questions, sports scores or recipes.
Google's auto industry director Michelle Morris said just 25 percent of people who search for a luxury car purchased the first brand they searched for. "There's a lot of cross-shopping," she said.
The New York show has historically been focused on luxury brands in part because of the big concentration of wealth on the East Coast, and the Wall Street bankers and traders who account for many of the highest-end luxury sales.
Luxury buyers still skew older than the auto market as a whole - and most are still 55 or older - but automakers are offering more in-vehicle technology to woo younger buyers.
The New York City area market accounts for 8 percent of total U.S. auto sales, said Jessica Caldwell, an Edmunds.com auto analyst.
About 25 percent of retail sales in the New York area are luxury vehicles, she said. It's a market where Detroit's Big Three have struggled in recent years. Just two U.S. models — the Ford Escape and Jeep Grand Cherokee — were in the top 20 vehicles sold in the New York City area in 2012, she said.

NY LIVE: Sportier, roomier 2014 Acura MDX

Acura promises that its third-generation MDX crossover will be sportier than ever for the 2014 model year.

Powered by an all-new 3.5-liter V6, the MDX boasts a suspension that was tuned on Germany's famous Nurburgring race track.

Though the new V6 boasts the same displacement as its predecessor, Acura says it's an all new design. Rated at 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft. of torque, the V6 will be offered exclusively with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Those figures are actually down 10 horsepower and 3 lb-ft. of torque compared to the previous MDX.

Fuel economy makes a big jump compared to the outgoing model: 18/27 mpg for the AWD and 20/28 mpg for the FWD.

Acura's torque vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system will be available, but the automaker will also sell a front-wheel-drive version of the MDX at a lower price point primarily for sun belt markets. Notably, the front-drive model will include the Agile Handling Assist technology similar to that on the automaker's Acura RLX flagship.

Further upping the MDX's sporty credentials is a new Integrated Dynamic System with three modes - Sport, Normal and Comfort - that adjusts steering effort, throttle response, all-wheel-drive and, intriguingly, active sound.

Underneath, MDX includes new Amplitude Reactive Dampers for its MacPherson strut/multi-link suspension. Alloy wheels of 18 and 19-inch diameters will be available.

Stylistically, MDX doesn't offer a huge departure from its predecessor, but its looks hide an all-new body that helps cut weight by an impressive 275 lbs. over the outgoing model. The MDX's wheelbase is now 2.8 inches longer than before. Up front, the MDX is more aerodynamic and it will offer the automaker's LED jewel array headlamps.

Inside, MDX benefits from its new multi-link rear suspension with a larger, more accessible third row of seats. The second row, meanwhile, now features a four position recline and six inches of fore-aft adjustment to add more legroom or increase cargo space. Acura is also justifiably proud of the MDX's roomy new console that it says will hold a laptop or purse.

The automaker's ELS audio system is more powerful now and it uses a 7-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback as well as a second 8-inch display. As a result of the new screens, Acura says it trimmed the outgoing car's hard button count from 41 to a mere 9 switches.

Second and third row passengers benefit from the availability of either a 9-inch screen or, on Advance package models, a huge 16.2-inch wide monitor.

Four trim levels will be available: MDX, MDX with Technology, MDX with Technology and Entertainment and MDX with Advance and Entertainment packages. Pricing and full details of the packages will be announced closer to the crossover's on sale date this summer.

All-New 2014 Acura MDX Debuts at the New York International Auto Show

NEW YORK, March 27, 2013 – Acura today unveiled the all-new 2014 MDX luxury SUV at the 2013 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Built on a completely new platform, the seven-passenger MDX offers improved ride comfort, a more versatile and luxurious cabin, increased fuel efficiency and enhanced dynamic performance. The MDX will also be offered for the first time in a more affordable and even more fuel-efficient two-wheel-drive configuration.

“Building on the award-winning dynamic performance of the previous model, the third-generation MDX adds new levels of luxury comfort, family functionality and fuel efficiency to once again set the luxury SUV benchmark,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of Acura Sales. “From Nürburgring-tuned dynamics and thoughtful interior appointments, to the addition of a new two-wheel-drive model, the all-new MDX continues Acura’s direction of creating vehicles that advance the synergy between man and machine.”

              Powertrain
The 2014 Acura MDX is powered by an all-new direct-injected 24-valve 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM™), producing 290 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque. The MDX’s engine architecture is shared with two racecars that recently finished First and Second in the LMP2 class at the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Employing a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sport Mode and Sequential SportShift Paddle Shifters, the new MDX will be offered in both Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) and two-wheel-drive drivetrain variants, both featuring Acura’s new Agile Handling Assist technology.

Matched to the highly efficient Earth Dreams Technology engine and the SH-AWD drivetrain, the 2014 MDX has an EPA fuel economy rating of 18/27/21 mpg1 (city/highway/combined), while the new front-wheel-drive model is EPA rated at 20/28/23 mpg1 (city/highway/combined).

While achieving even higher fuel economy ratings, the MDX remains a true driver’s SUV with enhanced dynamic performance, including quicker acceleration, more responsive braking and even more precise steering feel. Tuned and tested on the grueling Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany, the lighter and more dynamic new 2014 MDX with SH-AWD bests the previous model’s lap time by eight seconds.

To satisfy the preferences of multiple drivers in any family, the 2014 MDX features an all-new Integrated Dynamic System (IDS) with three modes: Sport, Normal and Comfort. IDS adjusts steering effort, throttle response, SH-AWD and active sound to suit the tastes of the driver. The MDX’s new Amplitude Reactive Dampers, MacPherson strut front suspension and new multi-link rear suspension enable its more nimble and responsive handling and improved ride quality. 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels and 245/60-18 tires come standard on the MDX. Technology and Advance grades are equipped with 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels and 245/55-19 tires.

              Body and Styling
The 2014 MDX body applies more than 55 percent advanced lightweight materials – including high strength steel, aluminum and magnesium – resulting in a vehicle that is both more rigid and lightweight, with total vehicle weight reduced 275 pounds from the previous model. Measuring 193.6 inches in overall length, 77.2 inches in overall width (excluding door mirrors), 67.6 inches in overall height, and riding on a 111-inch wheelbase (up 2.75 inches from the previous model), the new MDX boasts an “Executive Aero Sculpture” exterior design that lends it a sleek, tailored and sophisticated appearance. The aerodynamic body design – refined by engineers in a new wind tunnel at the company’s Ohio R&D center – helps the MDX achieve a more than 17 percent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency, making it one of the most aerodynamic and fuel-efficient luxury SUVs on the road.

The 2014 MDX also takes a big step up in luxury comfort and quiet. The MDX’s dynamically tuned platform, more airtight body and triple path isolated dampers, along with the use of new sound-deadening materials, such as acoustic glass and expanding body sealers, and Active Noise Control technology, make this the quietest and most composed MDX yet.

              Interior
Equally adept at carrying clients and kids, the new MDX boasts a luxurious and versatile interior. The revised body dimensions and new, more compact multi-link rear suspension, combined with innovative new technologies on the second-row seats, significantly improve third-row access and all-around passenger comfort. Third-row ingress and egress is significantly improved by a two-inch lower step-in height and three-inch wider entryway, and by the introduction of a new One-Touch Walk-In feature. With a single press of the illuminated One-Touch Walk-In button, the second-row seats automatically fold and slide to their forward-most position. The second-row seats now feature a four-position recline and a new Extended Slide capability that provides six inches of total fore-aft seat adjustment for optimal balance between second- and third-row legroom. Rear cargo capacity is also improved and includes a new underfloor storage area.

Up front, there is a 10-way power adjustable and heated driver’s seat and an 8-way power and heated passenger seat. The MDX also addresses a major shortcoming of many luxury SUVs – available front-seat storage space – with a spacious new center console that can accommodate a purse, laptop case, or a pair of iPads®. The MDX’s luxury quotient is further boosted by its upgraded interior appointments, including premium leather-trimmed interior, silver plated accents, LED overhead and cabin accent lighting, along with new optional luxury features, such as Smart Entry, second-row sunshades, remote engine start, and auto-linked air conditioning and climate-controlled seats.

              Acura Signature Technology
In addition, the 2014 Acura MDX harnesses a range of Acura signature technologies, including Acura Jewel Eye™ LED headlights, more powerful Acura/ELS Studio premium audio system, and the next-generation AcuraLink™ connectivity system with AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic™, featuring freeway traffic and surface street conditions (free for the first three years). In addition to the traffic services, the AcuraLink™ cloud-based connected car system offers an assortment of media, convenience, information and security features via an embedded cellular system and compatible web-enabled smartphones.

Both the AcuraLink™ and Acura/ELS Studio system take advantage of a 7-inch color On Demand Multi-Use Display™ (ODMD) touchscreen with haptic feedback and an 8-inch Color Information Display. The addition of the ODMD, along with other interior changes, allowed engineers to reduce the number of hard buttons in the center stack from 41 to just nine. The available Entertainment package adds a DVD Rear Entertainment system with a 9-inch full VGA screen for the rear seats, while the Advance package replaces the 9-inch monitor with an ultra-wide, 16.2-inch full VGA screen with HDMI compatibility for devices such as a game console.

The 2014 MDX offers a host of innovative driver assistive and visibility technologies, including a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and available Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, Blind Spot Information (BSI), and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS).

              Safety
The third-generation MDX is expected to achieve top-level safety ratings, including a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), including the highest possible rating of GOOD in the Institute’s new small-offset frontal collision test.

The new MDX is equipped with a broad array of advanced safety technologies, including the next generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ II (ACE™ II) body structure, 4-wheel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control, and airbags (front, front side, driver’s knee and side curtain with rollover sensor), as well as the available Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and

              Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems.
The 2014 Acura MDX is scheduled to go on sale at U.S. Acura dealers nationwide this summer and will be available in four grades – the well-equipped MDX, the robust MDX with Technology package, the rear-passenger-friendly MDX with Technology and Entertainment packages, and the top-of-the-line MDX with Advance and Entertainment packages. The 2014 MDX was designed and developed in the U.S. and will be built at the Lincoln, Alabama plant using domestic and globally sourced parts. Pricing details will be announced closer to launch.

This Acura RLX Commercial Will Make You Want To Luxury Vomit

The new ad for Acura's RLX is such a perfect embodiment of douchey luxury, watching it will make you want to walk to your luxury bathroom and luxuriously vomit into your luxury toilet.

It's hard to put your finger on exactly what's wrong with the luxury in this luxury car luxury ad. Is the luxury sugar too cubic? Is the luxury suit too shiny? Is the luxury smirk on the luxury car driver's face too luxurious?

Either way, it's not a good look for a car that is already hopelessly flailing against its luxury car competition.

Acura built just 91 examples of the ILX last month, here's why

The short life of the Acura ILX has been vexed by one glaringly odd standard equipment choice, mediocre reviews, getting outsold by its competition as it posted slower-than-projected sales and a pledge by Honda to upgrade its supposedly upgraded offering. Therefore, when Automotive News reports that just 91 of the Civic-based Acura sedans were manufactured last month – after a string of production months in double-digits – it would be easy to press the button for the alarm bells.

But that would be hasty, because it is actually the 2013 Honda Civic that is crimping the production pipeline of the ILX. The vastly higher sales numbers of the Honda meant that all three North American plants that produce it needed to crank up output to satisfy dealer inventory needs, including the Greenburg, Indiana plant that makes both the Civic and the ILX. As the classic guns-vs-butter Economy 101 lesson taught us – in which making more of one necessarily means making less of the other – well, the Civic is the gun.

Honda prepared for this eventuality by cranking out the Acuras while it got ready for Civic production. The ILX has held steady at about 500 units shy of company projections every month, and the current inventory represents about 90 days worth of sales. That makes Greenburg's ostensibly low numbers in line with the realities of the ILX, and the situation probably won't change much as Acura gets ready for the improved 2014 ILX.

                  • Acura Concept SUV-X is where brand should be going [w/video]

                    http://www.autoblog.com/2013/04/20/a...ai-2013-video/

                    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoYNo...layer_embedded

We're not saying Acura should off their Concept SUV-X for sale as-is, we're just saying we'd like to see Acuras that are interesting to look at on the outside, rather than just being packed full of technology on the inside. Revealed at the Shanghai Motor Show, the Concept SUV-X joins other compact high-rollers like the MG CS concept as an entrant for China's compact SUV segment.

But this won't be a concept forever. Acura says that the SUV-X is the precursor to a production offering from the brand in China that will come "in about three years." A presser below sheds a little more light on this and the Chinese version of the RLX that will go on sale in a few months, and there's a short video detailing some of the concept's finer points, as well.

Acura Exhibits World Premiere of the "Acura Concept SUV-X" at Auto Shanghai 2013

SHANGHAI, China, April 20, 2013 – Acura today exhibited the world premiere of a design concept model, the Acura Concept SUV-X, at Auto Shanghai 2013 (the 15th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, press day: April 20, public days: April 23 - 29).

                    Acura Concept SUV-X
The Acura Concept SUV-X is a global concept vehicle for a small SUV developing primarily for the Chinese market. This is the first time for Acura to introduce the world premiere of a concept model outside of North America. Emotional and sharp styling and driving performance, together with the environmental performance of a small vehicle and excellent utility of an SUV are all fused together at a high level in this vehicle. Acura is planning to begin local production and sales in China of a mass-production model based on this concept vehicle for its market in about next three years.

Introducing Acura RLX to go on sale in June 2013
Acura announced the Chinese version of the Acura RLX, a luxury flagship sedan which will go on sale in China in June 2013. Excellent maneuverability and comfort are pursued through the adoption of a number of advanced technologies including a newly-developed 3.5L direct-injection SOHC i-VTEC® V6 engine and Precision All-Wheel Steer™, the world's first technology that achieved both outstanding turning performance and vehicle stability.

At Auto Shanghai 2013, Acura also exhibits the NSX Concept, the next-generation super sports model which was exhibited at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in January.

Comment by Takanobu Ito, president & CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
"We are planning to produce the mass-production model of the Acura Concept SUV-X locally in China. With the hope that our Chinese customers will more closely feel the values offered from Acura, we will begin preparing for the start of the local production. In China, where dynamic growth continues, both Acura and Honda will keep up our efforts to enhance products and technologies that will offer new joys of mobility to our customers."

2014 Acura RLX Advance: Luxury With a Mind of Its Own

The Acura RLX with Advance Package is a $60,000 car that drives like a million bucks. The powerful 310 hp direct-injected 3.5 liter DOHC 24-valve VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) strives to humble NASA.

With the RLX you’ll get more than a craft with the power of a Saturn rocket. No, RLX doesn’t travel at the speed of light, but the ride is smooth, features are luxurious, it handles like a command ship, and has enough advanced technology to analyze moon rock.

The six-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift transcends you from nowhere to somewhere faster than you can say Lake of Tranquility.

The RLX is the perfect urban competitor with its nimble, streamlined, and middle weight looks. The car can meet the eye and take on challenges from the road.

The interior is of luxury material and craftsmanship that boasts and encourages you to take ownership. From its grille to its tail, from the underbody to the roof, the RLX is the most exciting vehicle I’ve driven this year.

RLX handles superbly with the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Blind Spot Information System, and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). Even an older gentleman of questionable talent, like myself, can take on the garment of the professional driver.

Speaking of driving, you can’t help but become a better driver with performance features like Precision All-Wheel Steer system, Parking Sensors, Electronic Park and Brake, and Agile Handling Assist.

If you like to be more involved in the driving experience remember the 6-speed transmission is outfitted with racing-style sequential SportShift paddle shifters, putting performance at your fingertips. And when you engage Sport mode you can feel the steering and throttle response.

The test RLX came with the Navigation Package that includes Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition and AcuraLink connectivity system, providing real time traffic, street, and road conditions. But the technology was cumbersome, as completing some of the most simple tasks was difficult. For example, moving from XM to AM requires too much time and concentration.

However, inside the RLX cabin was like a beautiful home. Wood grains accented with polished metal, soft leathers and detailed stitching throughout, were accompanied by driver and front seat passenger 12-way power heated seats adding further comfort.

My week’s drive experience netted me an average 25 mpg, but Acura promises you 31 mpg highway.

I invite you to take a ride in a contemporary car that is designed with the future in mind. Even a drive to the stars is not beyond your reach.

Production of 2014 Acura MDX Begins in Alabama

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley joined more than 1,500 associates at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (HMA) today to celebrate the start of mass production of the all-new 2014 Acura MDX luxury sport utility vehicle.

HMA is now the exclusive global production source of the Acura MDX, along with key Honda light truck models, including the Odyssey minivan, the Pilot sport utility vehicle and the Ridgeline pickup. HMA also builds the V-6 engines that power each model. The 2014 Acura MDX features an all-new Earth Dreams Technology direct injection V-6 engine going into production in North America for the first time.

"Today, we celebrate a new Alabama-made vehicle, fueled by the pride of Honda associates who are committed to exceeding the expectations of our Acura customers," said Tom Shoupe, HMA president.

Designed, engineered and developed in the U.S., the seven-passenger Acura MDX has long been a benchmark vehicle in its segment and Acura's top-selling vehicle for the past year. Built on a completely new platform, the redesigned 2014 MDX offers improved ride comfort, a more versatile and luxurious cabin, class-leading fuel economy and enhanced dynamic performance.

"What a beautiful vehicle we have created together," said Jim Keller, chief engineer for the 2014 Acura MDX at Honda R&D in Raymond, Ohio. "Today we celebrate not a finish line, but a starting line. Our race is just beginning, and to win this race takes a constant and committed focus on quality and on the customer."

The 2014 MDX, which will go on sale at Acura dealers nationwide in the coming weeks, is also designed to achieve the highest available safety ratings, and will be offered for the first time in a more affordable and even more fuel-efficient two-wheel-drive configuration. Pricing information will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

                      About Honda Manufacturing of Alabama
Honda Manufacturing of Alabama began production in 2001 with the Honda Odyssey minivan and now produces four vehicles and V-6 engines at its $2 billion facility in Lincoln. Using domestic and globally sourced parts, cumulative production in Alabama is now nearing three million vehicles and engines. HMA has invested almost $400 million during the past 24 months and has hired an additional 400 associates in both process and professional positions. HMA has also increased its production capacity by 40,000 units to a total of 340,000 vehicles and V-6 engines each year and now employs more than 4,000 associates.

About Honda Operations in North America
Honda now operates 14 major manufacturing facilities in North America, producing a wide range of Honda and Acura automobiles, automobile engines and transmissions, Honda all-terrain vehicles, and power equipment products such as lawn mowers, mini-tillers and general purpose engines, using domestic and globally sourced parts.

Seven Honda auto plants in the North American region, including four in the U.S., have the capacity to produce 1.63 million automobiles each year. In 2012, 90 percent of the Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were produced in North America. This will increase to 1.92 million vehicles per year in 2014, when the sales percentage of locally produced automobiles is expected to rise to more than 95 percent.

2014 Acura ILX gets upgrades after just one year

Like many others, we were openly disappointed with Honda after driving its lackluster 2012 Civic, a model so ill-conceived that the Japanese automaker was forced to put together a far-reaching facelift after just one year on the market. We found the resulting 2013 Civic to be much improved, putting the sedan back into the thick of the economy-car hunt.

The 2013 model year not only brought with it an upgraded Civic, it also marked the first model year of the Civic's upscale twin, the Acura ILX. Despite having the same model year and the same general underpinnings as the Honda, the ILX went on sale ahead of the freshened Civic and didn't receive all of the upgrades to its suspension, structure or NVH tuning (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) that graced its more plebeian cousin. While the ILX was a somewhat quieter and more refined car to begin with, the Civic's 2013 changes meant that it crept uncomfortably close to its Acura-badged brother in terms of refinement and standard equipment. For 2014, however, Acura is taking steps to remedy the inequity.

2014 Acura ILXThe 2014 ILX features a reworked interior with new leather seating surfaces and retrimmed door cards, along with heated front seats (the driver's side now featuring eight-way power), along with an enhanced audio system featuring a new subwoofer and active noise cancellation technology (found elsewhere on Honda's Odyssey minivan). A new multi-angle rearview camera and 17-inch alloys round out the 2014 model changes.

Unfortunately, no mention has been made of any changes to the car's unseen bits. While we don't mind that there hasn't been much in the way of an aesthetic rework, the Civic received reworked suspension tuning, additional sound deadening, and even structural enhancements for improved safety. We're inquiring to see if any such changes have been effected to the 2014 ILX, but for now it looks like the model year changes include mostly interior furnishings. As before, the ILX will be available with either a 2.0-liter, 150-horsepower four-cylinder or a 2.4-liter four-cylinder offering 201 horsepower (the latter recently lost an Autoblog comparison test to the Buick Verano Turbo). Details on the 2014 ILX Hybrid model have not yet been released.

For all of its upgrades, the 2013 Civic only suffered a $160 increase to its base price. The Indiana-assembled 2014 ILX, by contrast, is $1,000 dearer, starting at $26,900 (plus $895 in destination fees) for the five-speed auto model. All-in, the 2013 ILX has sold just 7,503 units through April so far this year.

2014 ACURA ILX LUXURY SPORTS SEDAN ARRIVES WITH HOST OF NEW STANDARD FEATURES, PROVIDING MORE CONTENT AND VALUE

                        05/13/2013 - TORRANCE, Calif
The 2014 Acura ILX luxury sports sedan goes on sale tomorrow with a host of new standard features, further strengthening the gateway vehicle to the Acura brand. Introduced as an all-new model for the 2013 model year, the 2014 Acura ILX offers increased value on a luxury scale with eight new standard features to enhance its curb appeal, interior comfort and overall driving enjoyment.

The ILX is the only luxury model on the top ten list of Generation Y car shoppers according to J.D. Power and Associates, and the 2014 ILX gets upgraded 17-inch alloy wheels, while the interior receives new leather seating surfaces and leatherette door liners, an eight-way power driver's seat, heated front seats and a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera. The ride experience is further enhanced by a new audio-system subwoofer and an Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) system that are standard features on the 2014 ILX, which starts at a manufacturer's suggested retail price* (MSRP) of $26,900, an increase of just $1,000.

Two advanced powertrain choices are available for 2014 ILX, with a standard 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 150 horsepower. Paired with a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission, it has an EPA ** city/highway/combined fuel economy rating of 24/35/28 mpg. For a more dynamic driving experience, the ILX can be equipped with a close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission matched to a 2.4-liter engine generating 201 horsepower, and earning an EPA ** city/highway/combined fuel economy rating of 22/31/25 mpg. Information on the 2014 Acura ILX Hybrid will be announced at a later date.

The ILX uses 59 percent high strength steel (HSS) in its body structure for enhanced protection and chassis rigidity. The chassis utilizes an advanced, fully independent MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension system and Acura signature Amplitude Reactive Dampers, which offer superior ride comfort and precise handling. In addition, Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) is used for excellent steering feel and improved fuel efficiency.

The high-quality, well-appointed interior is smart, spacious and sporty. It offers a number of convenient features including a standard Keyless Access System with smart entry and pushbutton start, along with Pandora® interface and SMS text message function for easy connectivity. As before, a Premium Package and Technology Package are both available.

Acura's belief in "Safety Through Innovation" is the foundation for the brand's commitment to leadership in safety, and accordingly the ILX has a wide range of standard active and passive safety features, including Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. It received a 2013 TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), attaining a score of GOOD in all four Institute tests, including the rigorous roof-strength test.

The Acura ILX is manufactured exclusively at the company's state-of-the-art Greensburg, Indiana plant using U.S. and globally sourced parts.

Spring Cleaning: What's in store for model year 2014? Part I - Acura

                        Acura
For the 2013 model year, Acura saw two big introductions with the launch of the all-new ILX model and a full model change of the RDX. For model year 2014, the focus shifts to their top level models, the RL and MDX. Both benefit from full model change updates this year, gaining improvements in fuel efficiency, performance, and interior space. The RL even gains an "X" in the process.
ILX The ILX is a pretty nice product but from the moment the pricing was announced we had a funny feeling that meeting Acura's stated sales targets would be a pretty big challenge, and that scenario appears to have unfolded. To energize sales, Acura has been utilizing a number of incentives on the 2013 models. For 2014, it looks like they are shuffling the trims a bit and pushing down a lot of the "Premium" content to the base model. We're not quite sure what impact it will have on the base price, but it seems like there's not a whole lot of freedom for Acura to be pushing it up by much. For those who are interested in snagging a 2.4 6MT ILX with the navigation system and ELS stereo, it appears you're still out of luck. Mechanical changes are not expected until the MMC, which may come a bit earlier than normal.
Summary: The ILX has struggled to sell in the type of numbers that Acura had hoped for. Acura hopes to fix this by shuffling the feature mix between trim levels, but will this be enough?
Watch For: More discounts as this Civic re-badge reskin doesn't make enough sense to fully realize the goals that were established, particularly with competitive pressures ramping up at explosive rates.
Available: May 14 - full pricing info (less the Hybrid mode) has now been released
TSX 2013 may be the final model year for the TSX, at least for a while (see TLX news below). If there is an actual 2014 model TSX, there are no changes expected.
                        Watch For: ??
                        Available: Autumn
RDX The RDX received a significant update for the 2013 model year, swapping its thirsty turbo 4 for a smoother, more powerful and more efficient 6-cylinder. As expected, it's selling like hotcakes right now. Since it's selling so well, don't expect anything beyond a few tiny trim changes for model year 2014.
Summary: No meaningful changes expected for 2014.
                        Available: Autumn
Watch For: MMC is due in 2016
TL 2014 will be the final model year of the TL nameplate. It will be replaced next year by an all new version, fortified with an extra "X" on the decklid. It's not clear what the "X" will bring (apart from its untold marketing powers), but water cooler talk suggests that the TLX will essentially bridge the gap between the departing TSX and TL models, which will hopefully enable it to recapture some of the lithe responsiveness that escapes the current TL. Expect Earth Dreams powertrains and lots of technology. UPDATE: we received a tip late Friday night from reader and Acura salesman "Colin" that ordersheets are listing a new "SE" model for the 2013 TL. Colin thinks that it's possible that Acura may just skip the 2014 model year TL altogether, much like how they did by skipping the the 2013 model year when transitioning from the RL to RLX. His team also thinks the TLX will launch earlier than fall of 2014.
Summary: 2013 SE model, possibly no 2014 model.
Watch For: All new 2015 TLX coming next year.
                        Available: 2013 SE: Summer, 2015 TLX - Spring 2014(?)
MDX As one of Acura's perennial showroom performers, there's a lot riding on the all-new-for-2014 MDX, which is entering production right about now. The engine has been downsided from 3.7L to a new 290hp Direct-Injected 3.5L SOHC V6 with VTEC and Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), but Acura claims fuel economy AND performance have both improved. Extensive use of high strength steel has cut weight and increased body rigidity, which should mean that the new 2014 MDX will ride AND handle better. Interior packaging has been refined to improve room for 2nd and 3rd row passengers, as well as accessibility to the 3rd row seating. Styling updates are muted, with the key feature being "Jewel Eye" LED headlights. And for the first time in its history, the MDX will be offered in a front-wheel-drive variant.
Summary: All new for 2014, Acura's flagship SUV should continue to sell in big numbers
Watch For: Expected strong sales means discounts will likely be scarce for the first few months
                        Available: Summer
RLX The RLX is essentially the 3rd generation of the Acura RL, and it follows the same general formula that was set by the Acura Legend over 25 years ago. And that's a large luxury sedan underpinned by a front engine, front-wheel drive platform. The RLX looks considerably larger than the previous RL, but the exterior dimensions are in fact very close to the outgoing RL's. Interior space has been improved dramatically, with the most prominent gains being realized by rear seat passengers, particularly in terms of legroom. The RLX is the first Acura to benefit from Honda's Earth Dreams engine technology, getting a 310hp SOHC 3.5L V6 featuring VTEC, Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), and Direct Injection. The standard front-wheel-drive RLX is already on sale (offering five trim levels, with 3 different stereo systems), and features Acura's new P-AWS (Precision All-Wheel-Steer) system. Later on, a Sport Hybrid AWD RLX will go on sale, supplementing the base V6 engine with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and 3 electric motors. This combination will deliver a system output of "more than 370hp". This new hybrid powertrain design improves the RLX's fuel efficiency and performance.
Summary: All new for 2014, with your choice of FWD, or Sport Hybrid AWD flavors.
Watch For: Sport Hybrid AWD in the fall
Available:FWD PAWS available now, Sport Hybrid AWD - late Fall
NSX NSX development remains in the early phases. Acura has been testing some mules against several benchmark products and the early returns are said to have been pretty promising. There's still a long ways to go, however, as the car isn't expected to go on sale for another two years or so.
Summary: A LOT rides on this project.
                        Available: 2015
ZDX The ZDX's run is over at the end of the 2013 model year.
Summary: If you ever thought about owning a ZDX, you should probably try to buy one now
                        Watch For: Falling prices
                        Available: For not much longer

Test Drive: 2013 Acura MDX Elite

Since its introduction in 2007, the second-generation Acura MDX has consistently topped the sales charts for mid-size luxury SUVs. It’s easy to see why, too: even in its seventh year (and with an all-new replacement due out for 2014), the current MDX continues to provide a winning blend of style, luxury, practicality and performance. And while its starting price of $55,135 is indeed solidly in luxury territory, it remains fiercely competitive against rival seven-seaters such as the BMW X5, which starts at $65,895 with third-row seats, the Lexus GX starting at $64,495, and Audi Q7, which starts at $61,395 with third-row seats (all prices include destination fees). Infiniti’s JX35 perhaps offers the greatest price competition starting at $46,895, but it doesn’t offer anything like the MDX’s driving dynamics.

The 2013 MDX enters its swan-song year unchanged from 2012, other than some revisions to the available paint colours. But that doesn’t mean it looks dated: it was last refreshed in 2010, and regardless of what you might think about Acura’s somewhat controversial blade-style grille, the MDX’s sleekly angular and somewhat conservative lines have withstood the test of time remarkably well.
Inside, it offers a convincingly luxurious atmosphere. The well-appointed cabin features abundant use of soft-surface materials (including the dash and door uppers), with leather upholstery in all models and perforated Milano leather upholstery in Technology and Elite models. There’s rich-looking woodgrain trim (though purists may note that it’s not real wood), a very nice stitched leather centre console armrest, eight-way power seat adjustments for both front seats (with two-position memory on the driver’s side), heated seats in the first two rows, back-up camera (multiview in the Technology and Elite models), power moonroof, power tailgate and, of course, tri-zone automatic climate control, power windows and locks, and a range of impressive audio systems with standard Bluetooth hands-free telephone connectivity.
My test vehicle’s Elite trim added to the interior ambience with heated/ventilated front seats, and the Technology and Elite trim both include a blind spot monitoring system and upgraded 410-watt ELS premium sound system with USB input, 15-gigabyte hard drive storage, navigation system, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and Bluetooth streaming audio.

Notably missing from this list of features is proximity-sensing keyless entry and push-button start, which one imagines will likely make an appearance on the third-generation 2014 MDX. The foot-actuated park brake also seems a little out-of-place in a luxury crossover, although I actually prefer it in some ways to the newfangled electronically activated parking brakes that are now de rigeur in the segment.
In practical matters, I found that first two rows of seating both offered a comfortable, supportive fit for my 5’11″ frame, while the third row was, as might be expected, better suited for kids. I did fit back there but it’s tight for headroom and legroom, like riding in the rear of a sporty coupe. With the third-row seats deployed you get a reasonable 425 L of cargo space, which expands to 1,215 L with the third row folded and 2,364 L with the second and third rows both folded. The back two rows are both split-folding (50/50 for the third row and 60/40 for the second), providing a wide variety of cargo and passenger configurations.

Under the hood, the MDX has a 3.7L VTEC V6 that generates 300 hp at 6,300 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm, and is hooked up to a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel–mounted paddle shifters. The big V6 has a nice low growl and lots of grunt (which allows a healthy 2,268-kg towing capacity), and in normal driving it mostly just purrs along between 2,000-3,000 rpm. It has a lofty 6,600 rpm redline however, and if you floor the accelerator it’ll happily wind all the way up into the upper rev range, pushing the MDX from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. Slip the shifter into sport mode and use the paddle shifters and the drivetrain becomes remarkably lively and sporty, although I found the wheel-mounted paddles a little small and noted that the transmission takes care of the first-to-second shift automatically almost regardless of what you do.

Getting the power to the road is Acura’s SH-AWD (super-handling all-wheel drive) system, which constantly measures wheel speed, steering angle, g-forces and the vehicle’s yaw angle, and then varies the amount of power being fed to each of the rear wheels to help reduce understeer and keep the vehicle almost perfectly balanced. Push the MDX hard into a corner and you can sense the system at work, but it doesn’t feel at all intrusive. Instead it gives the big crossover delightfully confidence-inspiring agility, even on rain-slicked roads.
In the Elite trim the MDX gets big 19-inch alloys and an active damper system that uses variable-viscosity magnetic fluid in the shock absorbers to instantaneously adjust the damping force, providing a relatively soft, compliant ride while maintaining a flat attitude and excellent grip in corners (a “comfort” button lets you soften the ride on rough roads, though it does induce a fair bit of pitching over bumps). Between the active dampers and the SH-AWD system, the result is that the MDX handles much more like a sedan than its high stance and hefty 2,109 kg curb weight (in Elite trim) might imply.
While the MDX offers good performance and handling, it doesn’t do quite as well in terms of fuel economy, with official NRCan ratings of 13.2 / 9.6 L/100 km (city/hwy). NRCan’s ratings are generally on the optimistic side, and I found this especially true with the MDX, which asks for pricey premium fuel and in my real-world short-hop city driving used close to 18 L/100 km of the stuff. Happily, highway driving generates numbers much closer to the official figure, but I only had a couple of brief highway runs during my week with the MDX.

Overall, the second-generation MDX still holds up well as it gets ready to bow out. It’s big enough to be versatile, but not so big as to be a challenge around town. It offers good power and has excellent handling for a crossover. It has a stellar array of safety features, and boasts commensurately good safety ratings. There are lots of storage cubbies — including in unexpected but welcome places like the passenger’s console side — and plenty of luxury and technology packed into the cabin, especially in Elite trim.
With suggested pricing starting at the previously mentioned base price of $55,135 and climbing to $65,335 (destination in) for the Elite trim, the MDX is competitive with its luxury rivals yet it offers more practicality than most of them and more standard equipment than many others. And as Acura dealers get ready to welcome the new third-generation 2014 model, buyers can almost certainly look forward to deals on the 2013, such as the $10,000 cash purchase incentive being offered at press time in Acura’s Master the Road sales event. That’s the equivalent of 7,500 L of premium gas right there, enough to carry you some 78,000 km down the highway, and very comfortably too.
