Toyota, Honda, Nissan Report Output Gains
      05.25.2005, 06:21 AM

Japan's three biggest automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co., said Wednesday that global output rose in April from a year ago, due to strong demand at home and overseas for new car, truck and bus models.

Mazda Motor Corp. also reported a modest uptick in worldwide production but struggling Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s output shrank, hit by its recent spate of recalls.

Toyota said global production of cars, trucks and buses surged 9.9 percent to 604,698 in April - the fourth straight month of gains - from 550,254 vehicles in April 2004. This year's data break down to 315,440 vehicles made in Japan and 289,258 made at the company's factories overseas.

Japan's No. 1 automaker said robust sales at home - where it has 48.3 percent market share - rising exports to North America and the Middle East as well as ramped-up production of Corolla compact sedans in Europe and Brazil, Tacoma trucks in Mexico and Avalon luxury sedans in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

Nissan said output jumped 10.4 percent to 288,954 vehicles, from 261,352 in April 2004 due to brisk demand for Fuga luxury sedans, Tiida and Note compact hatchbacks at home and the new Pathfinder sport-utility vehicle in the United States and Spain and the Micra compact in Britain.

Honda also reported gains with global production rising 9.6 percent to 276,766 vehicles in April, from 252,414 the previous year. Honda said exports of the Jazz compact to Europe drove output at domestic plants, while overseas production was strongest in Asia and the United States.

Among Japan's smaller auto makers, Mazda excelled, posting a 5.8 percent output rise to 96,551 vehicles, from 91,291. Domestic output rose on thanks to big sales of Premacy vans and the Axela 3 series compact.

However, Mitsubishi Motor's woes continued, with production at plants worldwide falling 13.1 percent to 100,846 vehicles. The automaker this week reported 474.8 billion yen (US$4.4 billion; euro3.5 billion) in losses last year for the second straight year, as the scandal-ridden company struggles to regain customer trust and sales in the wake of a defect coverup scandal.

          GM recunoaste:

GM rates Honda powertrains as industry benchmark after internal analysis of J.D. Power study

Honda Motor Co.'s powertrains are the new industry benchmark in General Motors' eyes.

Honda's engines and transmissions ranked first among those of six automakers included in an internal GM analysis of the latest J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study data.

Honda powertrains had 15.3 problems per 100 vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership, according to data in the GM analysis obtained by Automotive News.

GM powertrains were second-best on the list -- ahead of Toyota Motor Corp. for the first time in eight years. Toyota ranked No. 1 in the GM analysis last year.

GM would not discuss the calculations it performed on the J.D. Power data to rank itself and five key competitors: Honda, Toyota, Nissan Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler and Ford Motor Co.

J.D. Power does not make its powertrain surveys public, but sells the reports to automakers for internal use. Buying the reports gives automakers access to the consultant's database of survey responses. GM compiled its rankings from the raw data.

GM regularly uses data from J.D. Power studies to study product quality and make improvements, spokeswoman Janine Fruehan said.

"Based on the data we have, we do feel that our automatic transmissions are industry-leading," Fruehan said. "Beyond that, I can't comment on an internal study."

According to the GM analysis, GM powertrains had 18.1 problems per 100 vehicles. Nissan ranked third among the six automakers at 18.3 problems per 100.

Toyota, last year's leader in the GM analysis, slipped to fourth this year. Its powertrains had 18.7 problems per 100 vehicles in this year's rankings, compared with 16.4 last year.

DaimlerChrysler powertrains had 24.3 problems per 100 vehicles, GM calculated. Ford had 26.6 problems per 100 vehicles.

Raw J.D. Power data included in the GM analysis indicate that Honda performed well in engine quality. Its engines had 10.1 problems per 100 vehicles in 2005, down from 11.8 in 2004.

GM ranked powertrain quality on a corporate basis, but also produced a ranking of 22 brands. In that list Jaguar came out on top, with 9.3 problems per 100 vehicles. Infiniti was second, and Buick was third, ahead of Toyota's Lexus Division. Cadillac placed fifth in the by-brand rankings of powertrain quality.

A J.D. Power spokesman would not comment on GM's analysis.

The Initial Quality Study, released Wednesday, May 18, asked owners to rate vehicle quality on 135 attributes across nine categories after 90 days of ownership. The categories include ride and handling, engine and transmission and fit and finish.

The head of Japan's Honda Motor Co. said Thursday his company aims to keep production levels high in the United States and purchase more parts in the U.S. to help support the U.S. economy and its floundering auto industry.

Honda President and Chief Executive Takeo Fukui said such measures were preferable to raising prices on Japanese cars.

Honda currently produces about 80 percent of its vehicles for the American market in the U.S. and buys as much as 98 percent of auto parts needed for its U.S.-market cars from local suppliers, Fukui said.

Japanese officials have been considering ways to help the U.S. auto industry as General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. watch their U.S. market share become sharply eroded by Asian rivals, including Honda and Toyota Motor Corp.

The fears are that the success of Japanese automakers could set off a protectionist backlash in America, a major overseas market.

In an apparent effort to stave off anti-Japanese sentiments, Toyota Chairman Hiroshi Okuda said last month he was considering raising prices on Toyota cars in the United States, as well as sharing technological research to help troubled American automakers.

But Fukui said, "it's hard for us to understand" that suggestion. He made the comments at a news conference for the launch of Honda's new Step Wagon minivan.

Detroit-based General Motors Corp., the world's top automaker, posted a $1.1 billion (loss for the first fiscal quarter ended March 31, and its debt was downgraded to "junk" status last week. Ford Motor Co., based in Dearborn, Mich., also has fared poorly.

asa e. GM are probleme mult mai mari decit FORD in domeniul financiar.
