Honda Pilot remains a strong choice as mid-size SUV

At first glance, it's hard to believe this beefy-looking sport utility vehicle is viewed as a midsize crossover. Sitting tall and with nearly three inches added in width during its second generation remodeling, one would swear that the Honda Pilot rests on a truck frame.

And maybe that's the beauty of the Pilot - looks can be very deceiving. Even if it doesn't have the same type of handling capability one comes to expect from the many sleek crossovers that now inhabit the road, for a fairly big SUV the Pilot is hardly truck-like, even if its boxy and upright exterior appearance suggests otherwise.

This is the ninth year for the Pilot, a midsize SUV that comes standard with three rows of seating and can accommodate eight people. Back in 2003 it was the first SUV that was a car-based model in this category, although that's no longer the case.

The Pilot remains among the industry leaders in this segment. But the competition is tougher than ever. Vehicles like the Dodge Durango, Ford Flex, Mazda CX-9, Chevrolet Traverse and Dodge Journey are serious rivals.

There have been some telling changes with the 2012 Honda Pilot, whose last major redesign came in 2009. The exterior features a front end with a restyled bumper, headlights and grille. Interior changes include a more colorful, appealing dashboard, additional gauges, and Honda ditched some of the cheap plastic.

Still based on the popular Accord, the Pilot delivers a solid combination of utility, comfort and relatively high quality features that honestly reminds some people of the popular Honda Odyssey mini-van.

All four Pilot models share the same engine, a 3.5-liter, V6 that produces 250 horsepower and has 253 pound-feet of torque. The performance is not overly impressive and doesn't match some of the competition. The Pilot goes 0-60 in 9.1 seconds.

Still, for every-day use the Pilot provides the basic necessities. Although now more rugged in appearance than ever, don't plan on any off-road adventures. The towing capacity is 3,500 pounds with the two-wheel drive and increases to 4,500 in four-wheel mode.

The Pilot possesses some car-like qualities, so it continues to deliver a comfortable ride on most road surfaces. The Pilot scores near the top in many safety aspects. Gas mileage has increased the past few years and now averages 18-25 mpg.

The sticker price for the four-wheel drive Touring model, which includes a top-tier navigation and DVD entertainment system in the back seat, is relatively high at an estimated $39,370. Yet the LX model, which also comes standard with four-wheel drive, can be purchased for around $28,620.

The Pilot previously received criticism for its smallish third seating, which most owners probably lay flat and leave unused. The third row seating has increased in overall size, but it's still not very suitable for adults.

However, the second row offers supportive seating with good head and leg room. The Pilot's cargo space ranks high and really opens up when the third row goes down. There is an abundance of storage bins that give the Pilot some suitable family versatility.

The Pilot has considerable competition, but remains a good buy. It's good to excellent in practically every category and has the Honda's good name and resale value going for it as well.

Honda Civic Euro gets 300Nm 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine

Hondas new Honda Civic hatchback for the European market can now be had with their new Earth Dreams 1.6 litre i-DTEC turbodiesel from January 2013 onwards, marking the first time Earth Dreams technology will be offered in a car in Europe.
You can read more about what Earth Dreams Technology is all about in our feature story from earlier this year its pretty interesting. To put it simply, Honda aims to be best in class for fuel consumption in every segment, while ensuring the fun to drive factor is still there.
In the case of the Honda Civic Euro 1.6 i-DTEC, it emits just 94 g/km of CO2, and is rated at 78.5mpg on the combined cycle. That translates to a fantastic fuel consumption rating of just 3.6 litres per 100km. The 1,597cc turbodiesel is only available with a 6 speed manual gearbox. Power output is 120 PS at 4,000rpm and 300Nm of torque at 2,000rpm.
The 1.6 litre i-DTEC engine will also be installed in the Honda CR-V soon.

Is Consumer Reports losing its sway? Are we all?

Do the opinions of automotive journalists matter? For us, that may be a bit of transcendental self-examination, but for the consuming public, it's a very real question. Is a potential customer of a new family sedan going to rely completely on Consumer Reports, or are they willing to go with their own gut feelings and neighbors' recommendations?

Bloomberg has an interesting new report highlighting cars that are selling well in spite of not receiving high marks from Consumer Reports. One such vehicle is the 2012 Honda Civic, which has been largely derided by the automotive press. Yet sales of the Japanese compact are on pace to beat out vehicles like the acclaimed Chevrolet Cruze.

One criticism offered for CR's methods is their approach of putting all types of vehicles through the same type of testing. The Chrysler Town & Country as well as the Dodge Grand Caravan were given low marks for their performance in the slalom-the same slalom in which sports cars are tested. How important is that in buying a minivan?

While cars from Korea and the United States are increasingly lauded by the automotive community, owners of brands like Honda and Toyota remain fiercely loyal. In a time when some critics suggest that "there are no bad cars," customer loyalty and brand equity play a large part in the buying process. Korean and US automakers may be building some terrific vehicles now but the Japanese automakers have history on their side, and most buyers are still heavily weighing brand reputation in their decision-making processes.

It might be difficult convincing a consumer that the Civic is a substandard vehicle, just as it may be difficult to overcome someone's preconceived notions that a given automobile is an inferior product just because of its badge. If, in fact, there are "no more bad cars," then what's the role of professional evaluators in the buying process? Hopefully it still resides in educating consumers on making the best buying purchase-as long as they're still listening.

Honda drops full details about incredibly adorable N-One

Honda Japan has dropped all of the savory details about its new Kei car, the cute 'n cuddly N-One.

The N-One builds on the JDM-only N line for the automaker, which already produces an N Box and N Box+ for Japanese consumers. The boxy Kei car will offer two powerplants displacing 660cc each, one naturally aspirated and one turbocharged, as well as both front- and all-wheel- drive configurations. All N-One models rely on a continuously variable transmission. Honda isn't giving up the goods in terms of output figures for the N-One engines, save to say that the turbo will have performance "equivalent to a vehicle in the 1.3L class."

We are, of course, super jealous of all Kei car experiences, but that's particularly true here, as the N-One's pert, rounded-box looks bring Honda's N360/N600 styling cues up to date, and the city car's funky interior treatment make us positively green with envy. Take a closer look at our extensive gallery of images, and don't miss all the full details in the press release below.

Honda to Begin Sales of All-new "N-ONE" Mini-vehicle

TOKYO, Japan, November 1, 2012 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today announced it will begin sales of the N-ONE, the third model of the new N Series mini-vehicle following the N BOX and the N BOX +, on November 2nd at dealerships across Japan.

The N-ONE was developed in the motif of the N360, the first mass-produced Honda mini passenger car introduced to the market in 1967, and inherits Honda's M/M (man maximum, machine minimum) concept*1 which is the starting point of Honda's automobile design. With this new model, Honda engineers strived to build a new basic car with their passion to propose a new type of vehicle for the new era in Japan, which will enjoy enduring popularity.

Key features of the N-ONE include a spacious cabin which comfortably accommodates four adults, and an improved acceleration performance. Further, stable driving performance and excellent quietness even during highway driving were realized through adoption of a lightweight and highly-rigid body and an exclusively-developed suspension. In addition to these key features, the N-ONE realizes excellent fuel economy of 27.0km/L*2. Moreover, for the first time among all mini-vehicles in the market*3, the N-ONE features the Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) system as standard equipment on all types.

The N-ONE lineup also includes a higher grade model, the N-ONE Premium, which features a high-quality exterior and interior which are beyond those of any models in the mini-vehicle category. Furthermore, to accommodate the unique tastes of individual customers, a great variety of exterior colors are offered with total 11 body colors and a 2-tone color style, which has different colors for the body and roof.

      • Europe-Only Honda Civic Diesel Boasts 65 MPG

        http://gas2.org/2012/11/05/europe-on...boasts-65-mpg/

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, or in this case, the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. For 2013, the Honda Civic i-DTEC will boast a 1.6 liter diesel engine offering 221 ft-lbs of torque, and a 78 mpg rating on the UK testing cycle, which roughly translates to 65 mpg on the U.S. standard. Naturally, its only for Europe.

Going on sale in january of 2013, the new Honda Civic diesel will debut an all-new Earth Dreams diesel engine called the i-DTEC. As with all Civic models, this one will be front-wheel drive, and will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission. While the 1.6 liter diesel engine offers just 118 horsepower, the 221 ft-lbs of torque will allow for some spirited driving to be sure.

In the UK, this diesel Honda Civic will cost 19,400 , or about $31,000 in U.S. dollars. Thats a pretty expensive car, especially a Civic, but I have no doubt Honda could bring the price down a bit if production were shifted to the U.S. Alas, for now this engine and Civic are destined only for Europe, leaving the diesel market wide open for a usurper like say, the Chevy Cruze diesel, to step up and claim a place at the table.

Realisticly, the Civic diesels mpg rating would probably be between 50 and 60 mpg on the U.S. testing cycle. But that would still make it competitive with hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius and the 2013 Ford Fusion hybrid. Alas, diesel also costs more in the U.S. than a gallon of regular petrol. But Id make the jump to diesel if I could, especially if the Civic were offered with both a diesel, and hatchback setup like the one pictured above. Would you?

Will China Ruin Honda's Long-Term Profits?

Despite solid sales in the United States, Honda (NYSE: HMC ) is cutting its revenue guidance for the year because of slow sales in China. A dispute between Japan and China over who owns a group of islands in the East China Sea is hurting Honda's bottom line, and needs to be corrected to strengthen long-term growth.
        Current affairs and future projections
Honda's revenues were up 20% this quarter, and net income was up 36%. But, despite increased revenue and net income, Honda has cut its net income projections for the fiscal year, ending in March, to $4.7 billion, 20% lower than projections in July. Operating and revenue forecasts have been lowered, as well, and sales projections for 2013 have dropped from 3.54 million cars to 3.49 million cars. You have both China and Japan to thank for all this.
In mid-September, Japan announced they were purchasing a group of islands that China lays claim to. In response, some Chinese consumers protested against Japanese products, including cars. At the height of the protests, one Chinese Honda owner burnt his Accord, and others overturned vehicles. As a result, Honda shut down production for several days, and Honda sales in China went down 40.5% in September.
Honda's not the only Japanese manufacturer that's been hurt by the tensions between the two countries. Nissan's sales in China were down about 49%, and Toyota's (NYSE: TM ) sales were down about 35%. The short-term impact of the political scuffle between China and Japan may look bad, but it's important to consider the big picture.
        A pothole, not a sinkhole
Despite the drop in sales, Honda is currently building a plant in China to boost its automotive manufacturing in the country. The Japanese automotive company produces 770,000 automobiles in China, and wants to increase that to 1.01 million by 2014. Sales in China only account for about one-sixth of Honda's overall sales, but the company sees the future potential of having a significant footprint in the country. Trade between China and Japan was $345 billion last year, so it's in the interest of both countries to not escalate the situation.
Although the disagreement between the two countries has brought down earnings for Honda, and will likely hurt them next year, investors shouldn't be concerned long term. According to Edmunds.com, sales for new cars are expected to increase by 11% in October, and Honda is expected to see huge sales in the U.S because of its newly-redesigned Accord.
There is money in selling cars to China *-- just ask GM (NYSE: GM ) . It posted a $3.2 billion profit in China just last year. So a short-term drop in Honda's China sales doesn't spell disaster. As long as Honda addresses the China sales drop, and China and Japan can patch up their differences, investors can consider all of this as just a minor bump in the road.
With political posturing throughout the world, and slowing growth in China, many investors are worried about heady growth going forward. But fear not, because The Future is Made in America. Domestic manufacturing is poised to once again become the investment driver of the world, and all because of one disruptive technology. October 2012 SUV Sales - Honda CR-V Retakes Lead, Segment Growth Cools

Honda Topples Ford for SUV Sales Crown, Toyota Growth Slows

The story of the last several months in the SUV segment has been the neck-and-neck sales battle between the Honda CR-V and new 2013 Ford Escape. The Escape has been in the lead for several of the past few months, but Honda finally got the lead once again, but by a slim margin of fewer than 400 units.

The other noteworthy development for October is the normalization of percentage gains for Toyota once again, now that production has ramped up to pre-earthquake levels. After multiple months of double-digit growth for its popular RAV4, the model showed a modest October gain. Finally, the on-again/off-again Kia Sorento is now back on the top 10 list, outselling the Toyota Highlander for the month to take the number eight spot, and the Honda Pilot taking 10th place.

Jeep, despite rumors that it's packing up and moving to China, still showed solid gains for the month, with the Wrangler in particular showing a strong October performance, up 14 percent.

        1. Honda CR-V - 20,205, Up 4.5 Percent
After several months of the Ford Escape taking the SUV sales lead, Honda bounced back to edge out its Blue Oval rival by a scant 373 units. This is definitely the SUV sales rivalry to watch in the months ahead.

        2. Ford Escape - 19,832, Up 4.1 Percent
Possibly hurt by the multiple recalls issued on the all-new model, the 2013 Escape fell slightly behind the Honda CR-V for October. But for all intents and purposes, the two models are in a neck-and-neck sales race. Strategically, the Ford offers more variety in powertrains, trims and configurations than the Honda, potentially helping it in the months ahead, but there's no question the Honda CR-V is a sales force to be reckoned with.

        3. Chevrolet Equinox - 15,387, Up 1.8 Percent

The October gain for the Equinox may be modest, but it's still a solid number three for the month, out-pacing the Toyota RAV4 in overall volume once again. The Equinox's solid feel and choice of an economical four-cylinder or powerful V-6 continues to win over buyers, and the MyLink interface is a solid effort by GM in the realm of multimedia interfaces. Year-to-date sales are up 13.8 percent.

        4. Ford Explorer - 13,538, Up 12.9 Percent
The Explorer continues to be a solid performer for Ford, offering those customers needing seven-passenger flexibility the choice of three powertrains and trim levels ranging from well-equipped to downright luxurious. The newly introduced Sport model brings 365 turbocharged horses to the party, showing practicality and performance don't have to be mutually exclusive in a three-row SUV.

        5. Jeep Grand Cherokee - 11,919, Up 8 Percent

The Grand Cherokee's combination of a premium feel at a budget price continues to attract SUV shoppers who want Jeep's renowned off-road capability as well as 6000-plus-pound towing capacity in a reasonably sized package. With a 50-state turbodiesel option coming in early calendar 2014, it will be interesting to see how much the new engine option will add to the Grand's sales totals.

        6. Jeep Wrangler - 11,310, Up 14 Percent
One of the two "pillar" models for Jeep, the Wrangler continues to confound those who think its more than half-century-old formula is obsolete. The continued addition of new trim levels, as well as availability in two-door and four-door Unlimited configurations, keep attracting customers to its rugged mystique.

        7. Toyota RAV4 - 10,936, Up 2.4 Percent

After an eye-popping 80-percent gain for September, the RAV4's modest 1.8-percent growth for October may look disappointing, but in reality, it's more a normalization in sales than a major drop-off. Even with its much-quieter sales performance for the month, the RAV4 is still up 35.9 percent year-over-year. With an all-new model just around the corner, expect sales to surge once the new model reaches showrooms.

        8. Kia Sorento - 9615, Down 5.5 Percent
The Sorento has been a periodic contender on our SUV top-10 list, and it's back on the board for October, edging out the Toyota Highlander by more than 700 units. A new model based on the recently redesigned Hyundai Santa Fe is expected soon, and will probably share an assembly line, as the new Santa Fe is built at Kia's plant in West Point, Georgia.

        9. Toyota Highlander - 8909, Up 11 Percent

Toyota's midsize SUV came in ninth for October, same as in September, but overall volume and percentage growth cooled considerably for the model. Even compared with the recently redesigned 2013 Nissan Pathfinder, the Highlander holds the edge in fuel economy by offering a four-cylinder as well as a hybrid powertrain option. Although the new Pathfinder is starting to register on the sales radar, it's nowhere near top-10 territory yet.

        10. Honda Pilot - 8828, Down 29.2 Percent
Despite being down a significant 29.2 percent over October 2011, the Pilot still outsold the Nissan Rogue and Ford Edge, two models that have frequently appeared on our top-10 lists in 2012. Incremental trim and equipment updates, which include a standard rearview camera and Bluetooth hands-free calling on the 2013 model, keep this model a solid contender in the three-row class.

The world's only car just for women

Big companies are really beginning to twig to the fact it's a man's world out there, and the remedies are coming in thick and fast. First there was Bic for Her, a special biro just for ladies. Then there was the launch of Cadbury's women's chocolate bar, Crispello: 'A little treat for you'.
Now, fresh out of Japan, emerges the world's only vehicle designed specifically for women - the Honda Fit "She's". It's hard to determine exactly what all its special features are (because I don't speak Japanese) but a Google translation of the She's homepage managed to clunk out the following:
        * "Pink plated air conditioning display knob outlet"
        * "Discharge headlights"

        * "Special package for mounting navigation"
        * "I align the items recommended for navigation options when mounting the dealer."
        * "She's colored for rear license garnish"
        * "Filled pink stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel garnish"
What this tells me, apart from the fact Google Translate is surely operated by a teenage boy and that "knob outlet" possibly shouldn't make me smile at 30, is that there's a LOT of garnish on this thing.
From pictures, I gather there's also a seat warmer, a special pink keypad, and a UV/wrinkle-blocking windshield. Plus some kind of "Plasmacluster" climate control system designed to improve passengers' skin quality. And the apostrophe in the logo is heart-shaped.
It's not the first time automakers have tried to access ladies' purses with women-only models. As Yahoo! Autos points out, in the early 1900s electric cars were marketed to women "with the pitch that their lack of hand-crank starting would avoid broken shoulders and/or death."
And in the 50s there was the snazzy Dodge La Femme, which was two-tone pink and white. The car's interiors were upholstered in tapestry dotted with pink rosebuds, and it came with a pink calfskin purse.
Best of all, the purse contained "a face-powder compact, lipstick case, cigarette case, comb, cigarette lighter and change purse" (more info here) and could be stowed away in a special compartment behind the passenger seats. Along with a rain hat.
Oh, and the driver's seat swiveled to allow skirted ladies to exit modestly. As the ad said, it really was "designed with the ladies in mind!"
Anyway, it's no longer the 1950s, and the aesthetic gender divide in Japan is arguably more blatant than it is here, so it's doubtful we'll see rows of wheeled marshmallows drifting to shore. Nonetheless, if you do feel the need for more garnish in your drive, a trip to Japan with $22k in tow says She's yours.

CR-V Is Best-selling Crossover in America

The Honda CR-V reclaimed its position as the best-selling crossoveror SUVin the country in October, delivering 20,205 units and a 4.5 percent sales increase over the same month last year. Although Hondas hot-seller has never relinquished its lead on a year-to-date basis, and led the country in crossover/SUV sales for five straight months (from January to May), it had been relegated to second place in the intervening months by the Ford Escape.

At this stage in the 2012 selling season, the CR-Vs sales lead over its Blue Oval rival has reached 13,679 units, with the former tallying 233,586 sales through October, to the latters 219,907. The Honda also has grown at a much faster pace, as sales have expanded by 29.5 percent during the first 10 months of the year, which compares to a mark of 6.3 percent for the Ford.

But the CR-V wasnt the only Honda product to see particularly high demand in October. Also on the rise during the first full month of fall:

Honda AccordThe divisions all-new mid-size sedan is just now getting into dealerships and, in tandem with the 2012 model, rang up 28,349 October sales, representing a jump of 25.5 percent.
Honda Civic-The No. 1 compact in America, the Civic enjoyed a 27.9 sales improvement last month, on the strength 20,687 deliveries.
Honda FitHondas nimble subcompact rang up 3,773 sales last month and grew sales by 37.3 percent.
Honda CrosstourLeveraging a notable sales renaissance thanks to a freshened 2013 model, the unique Crosstour crossover saw a 19.3 percent sales spike and garnered 1,763 sales.
Honda RidgelineThe Ridgelines 996 sales13.2 percent more than in October 2011were no doubt assisted by the fact that a rearview camera system is now standard across the entire lineup.

The bottom line for Honda last month was a healthy 8.7 percent sales jump that both outpaced the growth rate of the industry as a whole and resulted in 94,810 October deliveries for the brand.

Honda Marks 30th Anniversary of U.S. Production

Thirty years ago this month, Honda became the very first Japanese automaker to begin building cars in this country, starting with the Honda Accord. Its a milestone thats well worth celebrating, and the company is doing so in an appropriate fashion: By investing another $200 millionand adding 200 jobsat two of its manufacturing complexes in Ohio. Its just the latest in a long string of investments over the past three decades that has now totaled $12.5 billion and created a current workforce of more than 26,000 people.

Other recent financial commitments from Honda, which have topped $2 billion in the past two years alone, include delivering:

$400 million for a new plant in Lincoln, Ala., where 190 new jobs also were created
$299 million and 200 new jobs at its Anna (Ohio) Engine Plant
$40 million and almost 300 jobs in Greensburg, Ind., to help support production of the Honda Civic Hybrid
$175 million, as well as 100 new jobs, for its transmission facility in Russells Point, Ohio
$230 million to expand facilities in both Marysville and East Liberty, Ohio

For 30 years, Honda associates in our U.S. auto plants have challenged themselves and set high standards to create products that meet the needs of our customers here and in markets around the world, said Tetsuo Iwamura, president and CEO of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and chief operating officer of North American Regional Operations. We continue to invest in our associates, helping to keep our operations in America on the leading edge of quality, efficiency and flexibility.

Honda Civic Diesel Achieves 65 MPG

A new diesel Honda Civic has achieved the US equivalent of 65 MPG fuel efficiency, which is comparable to that of hybrid electric vehicles.

It goes on sale in January 2013, but only in Europe. It is equipped with the i-DTEC Earth Dreams diesel engine.

It has a 1.6 litre, 118 HP engine. Despite being only 118 HP, it provides one of the key benefits of diesel engines, which is 221 ft-lbs of torque. It produces about the same amount of horsepower as most Civics, Corollas, and economy cars.

This is a front-wheel-drive vehicle that offers a manual six-speed transmission.

In the United Kingdom, it will cost 19,400, which is approximately $31,000 USD.

As I said in the beginning, diesel-powered vehicles can achieve efficiency comparable to that of gasoline-fueled hybrid electrics, but they have a higher initial cost. The Honda Insight Hybrid starts at $18,500 although, it is not as efficient; it achieves 41 MPG in cities, and 44 MPG on highways.

You may wonder why it is not available in the US. Possible causes of this include:

Higher taxes on diesel than on gasoline in the US. Diesel is used to fuel tractor trailers, which are needed to transport most goods throughout the US.
Diesel cars have a reputation for sluggish performance.
Diesel cars are expensive to buy, although their fuel efficiency and reliability benefits compensate for that. Americans often purchase lower-priced vehicles.
Diesel engines have a history of polluting the air more than gasoline ones, although low-sulfur diesel technology has changed this.

2012 Honda Civic Si Navi Sedan review notes
Top performing Civic still plagued by substandard interior

ASSOCIATE EDITOR JAKE LINGEMAN: This is my second time in a Honda Civic Si in the past few months. What I liked about the coupe, I also like in the sedan: comfortable seats, a clean dash and a relatively strong naturally aspirated enginemostly the engine.

What we sometimes forget with all the turbo and supercharging for efficiency is that a naturally aspirated engine can really bring the performance out. The Si has a nice kick in gears one through five and almost anywhere in the rev range. The clutch pedal is light, but has just enough weight to give it some feel. I'd be confident teaching someone to drive a stick shift on this car.

I'm much less enamored with the body than I used to be. The Civic hasn't really looked good for two generations to my eyes, but at least it's clean and not too gaudy.

The interior looks and feels a little cheap with hard plastic surfaces everywhere and some mismatched panel gaps.

I do appreciate the simple gauge cluster and console. The tachometer sits centered in between the top and center of the wheel while the digital speed readout is just above. The important stuff is dead center. The radio and climate controls are easy to operate as well. I'm a big fan of the VTEC shift lights: yellow, yellow, yellow, red! The power percentage screen next to it didn't interest me as much.

This car is about $1,000 more than the Mazda MazdaSpeed 3 and Volkswagen Jetta GLI. I'd take both of those over thisthe Mazda because it has about a third more horsepower, and the GLI for its refinement.

NEWS EDITOR GREG MIGLIORE: The slick and easy-shifting six-speed stands out most prominently to me after a night in the Si. The clutch is smooth, takeup is quick and intuitive and the throws are just short enough to feel sporty. It's an eager partner for the naturally aspirated four-cylinder, which offers adequate power and can be managed in an effective fashion for enthusiasts. The chassis is another highlight, as the Civic feels tight, composed and balanced. Overall, it makes for a reasonably athletic package, and when I merged onto an expressway in front of a blacked-out Ford Mustang GT, I surprisingly shot into open space with the Ford in my wake. I was ahead to begin with, but I think the driver assumed he would be blitzing past upon entering traffic. By working the gears aggressively and nailing the throttle, I set the pace for awhile.

Despite the somewhat sporty nature of this machine, it won't beat you up. It's far more comfyand less powerful than the Mazdaspeed 3, and much less intense. I would take a bit more power, perhaps 30 hp, to make the Si trim truly come alive.

The negatives are primarily aesthetic. The looks inside and out are pedestrian, with little to draw in and hold an enthusiast. The materials inside the cabin look substandard, though the seats and stitching do present well. It's a solid car, but not at the top of my list.

65-MPG Honda Civic Diesel Slated For UK

Its old news that Europe and the UK get the best diesels, but Americans have been showing an increased interest in them, and rumors and reports have been circulating more diesels are on their way. Nonetheless, its another case of not this time, says Honda.

For 2013, diesel-embracing Europe will enjoy yet another new, economical diesel, this one being the Honda Civic i-DTEC which Honda suggests our readers over there will surely enjoy.

An exciting new chapter in the history of Honda diesels has begun with the arrival of the brands hotly anticipated 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine, says Honda of UK. This is the first engine to be launched in Europe under Hondas flagship Earth Dreams Technology environmental programme and will offer customers an outstanding balance of high fuel economy, low emissions and exciting performance.

The car uses a 1.6-liter diesel said to make approximately 118 horsepower and 221 pound-feet torque. Engine power is routed through a six-speed manual transmission.

According to the news release linked above, the all-new powerplant has been developed exclusively for Europe, and will be built in the UK.

Honda says the 1.6-liter i-DTEC is good for 78.5 mpg (under UK testing). For interested diesel fans in the States, that could translate to a little more than an estimated 65 mpg.

The new Civic will retail for 19,400 British pounds, or about $31,000 U.S., with the top-of-the-range EX model retailing for 23,175 pounds ($37,000).

Comparatively, the EPA rates Toyota Prius c hybrid fuel economy at 53 mpg city/46 mpg highway, with a starting MSRP of $18,950.

Honda unveiled the car at the Paris Auto Show in September, but last week announced pricing and a January 2013 date for delivery to dealer showrooms.

A 2.2-liter iteration of the i-DTEC was introduced in the European Accord in 2008 and in the CR-V in 2010.

"His forward thinking, his commitment, and his passion and perseverance have made him a powerful force in supporting the MIC's mission to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling. As a member of the MIC Board, Ray was diligent in his efforts. And as one of the original members of DTM, Ray was tireless in his pursuit of sharing motorcycling with the non-riding public. Everyone at the MIC wishes him well in his retirement, but he will be sorely missed."

American Honda's newly promoted Vice President, Motorcycle Division, Robert Gurga will assume Blank's duties on the MIC Board when Blank steps down. Gurga has been with American Honda's Motorcycle Division for 34 years and previously served as assistant vice president of marketing.

"After nearly 30 years in the motorcycle industry and 25 years working with the MIC, I have made the decision to step down," said Blank. "I am very proud of my time working with the MIC and Discover Today's Motorcycling, and what we have all achieved together. I never thought I would have the good fortune to be involved with so many great motorcyclists and industry friends during my career. I want to thank everyone I've worked with for memories I never dreamed possible."

The Motorcycle Industry Council exists to preserve, protect and promote motorcycling through government relations, communications and media relations, statistics and research, aftermarket programs, development of data communications standards, and activities surrounding technical and regulatory issues. As a not-for-profit, national industry association, the MIC seeks to support motorcyclists by representing manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles, scooters, motorcycle/ATV/ROV parts and accessories, and members of allied trades such as insurance, finance and investment companies, media companies and consultants.

The MIC is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., with a government relations office in metropolitan Washington, D.C. First called the MIC in 1970, the organization has been in operation since 1914. Visit the MIC at www.mic.org.

Report: Honda boss expects Fit sales to surge starting next year

Hondas President Takanobu Ito said that he expects the Fit to be the companys fastest-growing model in North America over the next four years. Ito said he expects sales of the Fit to hit 200,000 units in North America, up from 64,177 in 2011.

That means that the Honda Fit will pass sales of Accord, Civic, Odyssey or CR-V.

Ito said that sales of the Fit in the U.S. will rise after the redesigned model launches next year.

Weve set the target of selling 2 million vehicles in 2016, Ito told Automotive News. What is for sure is that of that, the Mexican-produced 200,000 units, which entail the Fit and its variants, will be the minimum contribution that that series makes.

Honda's pink car marketed exclusively for women is insulting

Ugh. Really, Honda Japan? A pink Fit designed just for women?

Im aware youre only hitting the Japanese market with the Fit Shes, because you note the rest of the world just wouldnt get it. We wouldnt buy it, either. If I sat in a press conference being told a car was available in eyeshadow shades (yes, pink) and had a windshield that reduced wrinkles, I would barf.

Described in releases as adult cute (whatever that is), I suppose it could be good, for me, a modern woman, to have a place to put my Hello Kitty purse as I drove around no doubt lost in a vehicle conveniently shaped like an A cup breast to remind everyone of my gender.

Manufacturers do a lot of research before they market a car. They know who buys, and they try very hard to determine why. Women influence up to 80 per cent of all purchases, and the number of women directly buying their own cars continues to rise. It only stands to reason that we want somewhere to apply our makeup, right?

No. Remarkably, women want a car they can trust. Fuel efficiency is big on our lists. Were more likely to sweat over the basics, especially safety features, than be oversold a sound system. Some studies infer that because we make less money, we buy cheaper cars. I have another theory: many of us go into a showroom prepared to be ripped off, and already entrenched for combat because of that.

The Internet has levelled the playing field for car selling. I can comfortably research to my hearts content every car that strikes my fancy, check and recheck what reputable sources tell me. There are sites like CarCostCanada.com that will tell me, for a small fee, what the car should cost. I can dip into chat rooms full of existing owners who frequently reveal more than any manufacturer or seller would like them to. Yes, its up to me to differentiate between disgruntled former employees or public relations plants, which is increasingly more difficult to do, but the point is the information is there if I want it badly enough.

                And I do.

I know women who know more about the cars theyre considering than the people selling them. I know women who will tell you they drive a blue car. So what? Neither should be treated with derision, or extended information or marketing garbage based on their gender. Whether they need that information respected or augmented, its whats between your ears, not your legs.

Hondas not the first, of course. The Dodge La Femme in 1955-56 was an experiment destined to end up in a museum, and deservedly so. The compartment on the drivers side contains a stylish rain cape, fishermans style rain hat and umbrella. ... The other compartment holds a stunning shoulder bag in soft rose leather. It is fitted with compact, lighter, lipstick and cigarette case.

Funnily enough, its easy to point out the manufacturers who have ventured into labelling a car designed for women, because most of them are smart enough not to pointedly do it. Whats more irritating are reviewers who insist on tossing around the lazy label of chick car.

Its derogatory to both the cars and their owners. Most of us have a car that more than one person drives. Most of us are conscious that there may come a time when we want to sell that car. Boxsters and Miatas are no more for chicks than F-150s and Durangos are for dicks, and judging people for what they drive gets really old, really fast.

But which cars are sold to more women? A recent American Polk research study reveals a list jammed with compact CUVs but topped by the Volvo S40, followed by Nissan Rogue, VW Eos, VW Beetle, Toyota Matrix, Hyundai Tuscon, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4, Nissan Juke and the Jeep Compass. Interestingly, all of these majorities are in within the 50 to 60 per cent range, meaning that there is no crushing female landslide. Maybe that attests to the fact that the things women are looking for in a car dependability, fuel efficiency, safety and value are the same things many men are looking for. It also points to the fact that we have spouses and children driving those cars, too.

Is it smart for manufacturers to take their female buyers into account as they design a car? Of course it is. But its not only condescending to think if you paint it pink Ill buy it its a win for one of your competitors.

                Prices start from just 19,400

An exciting new chapter in the history of Honda diesels has begun with the arrival of the brand's hotly anticipated 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine. This is the first engine to be launched in Europe under Honda's flagship Earth Dreams Technology environmental programme and will offer customers an outstanding balance of high fuel economy, low emissions and exciting performance.

The new engine makes its debut in the British built Civic which will be arriving in dealerships from early next year, priced from just 19,400 and will also be making its way into the new CR-V SUV later in 2013.

The all-new powerplant has been developed exclusively for Europe, and tested extensively on a variety of roads across the continent. As with the Civic itself, the engine has been built at Honda's state-of-the-art factory in Swindon.

This new engine catapults the Civic into the competitive corporate market, offering a 'no compromise' vehicle for the corporate customer. With a class-leading combination of fuel economy and performance, the new fuel-sipping Civic 1.6 i-DTEC keeps running costs low by emitting only 94 g/km meaning free road tax and with 78.5mpg on the combined cycle, it's longer between fill ups. The specification for this trio of new variants will be identical to the equivalent 2.2-litre i-DTEC cars, but with the addition of new 16-inch alloy wheels. The 1.6 i-DTEC EX has also been enhanced with several desirable convenience features including front and rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and DAB digital radio.

Honda's advanced i-DTEC diesel technology has already proved its environmental credentials over a number of years. It went on sale in the UK in 2.2-litre guise in the refined Accord Saloon/Tourer in 2008 and the award-winning CR-V sports utility vehicle in 2010.

Early interest in the new 1.6 i-DTEC Civic has been very positive and it's expected to be warmly welcomed onto fleets when the first deliveries commence in January 2013.

Honda Malaysia, MIROS collaborate for ASEAN NCAP

Honda Malaysia recently provided a new Honda City for the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) to run the ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme (ASEAN NCAP) crash test. The first crash test was carried out at the specially built NCAP crash lab in Malacca, where a series of crash tests for sedans and small cars will be undertaken under its Phase I testing.

The crash test speed was recorded at 63.6 km/h. Following this, another City will undergo an official ASEAN NCAP crash test in December, which will further add tenability to the results. The results will be made public on MIROS ASEAN NCAP website.

On hand to guide the MIROS team were Yoshiji Kadotani and Tadashi Mashita of Hondas R&D. Crash test aspects included the placement of dummies, ideal in-car temperatures, mechanics to achieve the desired speed for accurate results and correct cable tension in pulling the cars. Kadotani, Mashita and their team have crash tested more than 20,000 cars.

The body structure of a Honda car is built with G-force Control Technology (G-CON) that helps disperse and absorb the impact of a crash. Passive safety technologies are dual front SRS airbags and three-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seat belts, while active safety technologies include Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), ABS, EBD and Brake Assist (BA).

Honda says all its cars meet the UN Economic Commission of Europe (UNECE)s R94 and R95 regulations for safety standards and crashworthiness.

Honda to launch first diesel car, sedan Amaze, in India on same platform as Brio

Honda will launch its first diesel vehicle in India - an entry-level sedan called 'Amaze' - in 2013-14. Amaze is developed on the platform of its existing small car Brio .

Brio was developed exclusively for the Asian markets, and was introduced in Thailand and India in 2011, followed by Indonesia in 2012.

"...Amaze will be launched in Thailand and India... The details of the model will be announced later this month in Thailand and next financial year in India," Honda Cars India said in a statement.

Honda plans to introduce the Amaze to accommodate the diversifying needs of customers in automobile markets in Asia, where competition is intensifying, it added.

Without sharing pricing details, the company said: "These models will be introduced to the market at affordable prices realised by increasing cost competitiveness through local sourcing and production."

"In India, the Honda Amaze will be available with a petrol engine and a newly-developed diesel engine and will be positioned in the entry-level sedan segment for the Indian market," the statement read.

In Thailand, the model will be equipped with only a petrol engine.

Talking about the model's features, Honda said: "The car offers amazing power delivery yet with class leading fuel efficiency, while sustaining core Honda values to appeal to the growing base of middle class customers aspiring to own a Honda sedan."

                  http://www.bangkokpost.com/business/...-mate-in-honda

Has Proton finally met its mate in Honda?

Proton, Malaysias national carmaker, has perhaps had the most suitors and failed courtships of any carmaker on the planet.

All these years the local and foreign suitors could not strike a deal that was a win-win for both parties, be it for a share sale or a joint venture. Each had stringent rules and each wanted its own way.

So when talk emerged recently of Proton and Honda having a quiet chat, many raised their eyebrows.

A Japanese suitor this time around is new. There have been European suitors, notably the long-running, on-again, off-again affair with Volkswagen, an Indian party, a Chinese party and others too.

Proton began its journey nearly three decades ago as Malaysias national car company.

It has continued to give Malaysians a choice to own an affordable car. Because of its existence there is a strong vendor support network that depends on Proton for survival.

Proton until early this year was majority owned by the governments investment arm, Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

After failed attempts to get a strategic foreign partner for Proton, and with Proton bleeding profusely for many years, Khazanah decided to part with the carmarker.

The beneficiary was DRB-Hicom Group, a company controlled by billionaire Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary.

DRB-Hicom has various businesses and has seven car marques under its belt because it has a thriving car business.

Honda is a partner because DRB-Hicom has a 34% stake in Honda Malaysia. The other six are VW, Suzuki, Audi, Mahindra, Isuzu, and Mitsubishi.

Early this year DRB-Hicom bought Khazanah Nasionals Proton stake for 1.29 billion ringgit and subsequently took over the company in May for RM3 billion.

Since taking over, DRB-Hicom has undertaken a restructuring to pare down Protons debt.

But even DRB-Hicom has from the onset been talking about a foreign strategic partner.

In less than five months it has announced a deal with Honda for Proton. Last week Proton signed a deal with Honda, the intent being to address some of Protons current weaknesses, but no details were given on the partnership.

Sales of Proton cars have been flat and DRB-Hicom, after spending RM3 billion, needs to get Proton resuscitated, as its survival is key for the national auto industry.

The tie-up with Honda also opens the doors for more partnerships and ties up with other carmakers. In any case, DRB-Hicom is in a hurry to see the returns on its investment.

But the Honda tie-up also raises questions because Proton has had a long relationship with another Japanese carmaker, Mitsubishi Motor Corp. What happens to that deal with Honda now in the front row?

Mitsubishi was an investor in Proton when the Malaysian carmarker started off in 1983. The first few models including the Proton Saga and Proton Wira were based on Mitsubishis platform. Though not so active, Mitsubishi is still there.

How that relationship will be managed remains to be seen.

What triggered Honda to partner with Proton is not clear but reports suggest that the severe floods that affected its plant in Ayutthaya in Thailand and disrupted Hondas global supply chain had led Honda to look elsewhere.

Whether Honda will use Protons facilities at the one-billion-ringgit Proton City plant in Tanjung Malim remains to be seen. There is ample capacity there as the plant is severely underutilised.

What Proton needs is a lift and Honda can provide that. There again, DRB-Hicom has solid relationships with six other makers including VW and the market is now speculating again that a tie-up between Proton and VW is possible because the circumstances now are different from those of 2007, when the two first began talking before they decided to part ways.

In the final analysis, Proton needs a partner, and the partnership should be about progress for Proton. It is time for Proton to use the Honda deal to transform itself into a carmaker that can export its products widely instead of continuing to focus only on the domestic market.

13 Honda Accord is fun to dirve, offers great fuel economy

With its full-model change, the all-new ninth generation 2013 Honda Accord receives a sculpted and aerodynamic exterior, all-new engines and transmissions. New and innovative features include the LaneWatch blind-spot display which enhances visibility of the passenger-side roadway; Lane Departure Warning; and Forward Collision Warning. New technologies now standard on all 2013 Accord models include rearview camera and Expanded View Driver's Mirror. Also standard are popular technologies including Bluetooth HandsFreeLink phone interface, Multi-Information Display (i-MID), SMS text messaging function and Pandora Internet Radio interface2.

"Together, we worked hand-in-hand to ensure that every detail of this vehicle could be manufactured with the highest levels of quality," said Mike Fischer, manufacturing new-model leader for the Accord. "We have been very successful at taking an exciting design concept for the 2013 Accord and turning it into a segment-leading product for our customers."

"This new Accord will be very fun to drive, will offer great fuel economy, and will feature a comfortable cabin with a very quiet ride," said Tomko. "Our team at the Marysville Auto Plant is ready to build it, and we are committed to manufacturing it with the best quality and reliability in the business."

One example is the Accord's seamless, one-piece instrument panel, which reduces road noise and makes for a much more quiet and luxurious ride. Making this one change required three new machines, two new welders and installation of a special seismic floor six feet deep into the plant floor to eliminate vibrations that could cause variations with the ultrasonic knife used to score perforations that will enable deployment of the front passenger airbag.

Along with a total redesign of the vehicle, the ninth-generation Accord is the first in North America to apply Honda's Earth Dreams engine and transmission technologies that offer improved fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive performance. This includes a new four-cylinder direct injection engine paired with a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and a new V-6 engine with six-speed automatic transmission that provide an excellent combination of fuel efficiency and performance.

Honda launches advertising offensive for new CR-V

HONDA Australia will launch an advertising offensive today for its all-new CR-V.

"This is a huge launch into the fastest growing segment of the Australian market. It's the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Honda brand," Kevin Lillie, senior marketing manager at Honda Australia said.

"The all-new CR-V campaign provides us with a platform to reconnect with Australians, as it unashamedly captures the essence of what Honda is known for in this market."

For the first time in Australia, the CR-V will be available with a choice of both two and four-wheel drive.

The two-wheel drive is powered by a new 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine, with the four-wheel drive powered by a bigger 2.4-litre i-VTEC engine. Both variants have as standard, 17-inch alloys, reversing camera, automatic-off headlights, cruise control, USB connectivity and Bluetooth hands-free.

Advertising for the CR-V will campaign "the power of clever thinking" and heralds the benefits of owning an SUV that is "bigger inside; smaller outside".

Created by Honda's new agency, Leo Burnett Melbourne, the ad features a number of scenarios familiar to the everyday SUV driver and is juxtaposed with the CR-V's parking and packing abilities. A re-recording of the Broadway classic "Anything you can do, I can do better" further emphasises the benefits the CR-V has over other SUVs.

As one of the most competitive and fastest growing automotive segments in Australia, the SUV market is a core category for Honda.

With its sleek new design, enhanced driving dynamics, superior functionality and competitive pricing, the all-new CR-V is one of the most anticipated Honda models to launch this year.

                  http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/20...hybrid-review/

                  2012 Honda Civic Hybrid review

The 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid rolls of the line with a host of welcome additions, but its Spartan styling and modest improvements threaten to draw attention away from a solid, but ultimately sterile, Civic.
You know the Honda Civic. In fact, you probably know it pretty darn well. Chances are youve owned one, and were willing to bet that youve at least driven one at some point in your life. If that isnt a testament to the popularity and reliability of Hondas little people mover, we dont know what is.
The Civic has been around since 1973, and for much of its history has been at the top of its class. Its always been that go-to car, a solid buy that few could find fault in. Not only has the Honda Civic been fuel efficient, but its always blended style with a sprinkle of sporty into its seemingly infallible, and automotively delicious, recipe.
The Civic Hybrid is a different story; its never quite matched the popularity (or fuel efficiency) of cars like the Toyota Prius, and for many, Hondas dedicated hybrid, the Insight, seemed a better fit for eco crowd. Returning for the 2012 model year, the Honda Civic Hybrid seeks to incorporate its past pedigree with a greater emphasis towards fuel efficiency. Does it succeed? Heres what we think.
                  Conservative, comfortable, and cheap

On the inside, the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid proves comfortable enough, but its nothing breathtaking, and in designing the interior Honda seems to have placed practicality over any semblance of style. For drivers seeking a straightforward, conservative interior, the Civic will happily oblige, and other than a few hints here and there like its green Econ button to the left of the steering wheel youd be hard pressed to distinguish it from the standard Civic although, the standard Civic rocks that big green button too.
Thankfully, what it lacks in style it makes up for in comfort. Again, this is a no-frills cabin, but at its core the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid provides a pleasant interior, even if it is a rather sleepy one. Both drivers and passengers will find ample head, leg, and shoulder room up front, while passengers in the rear should have plenty of space to stretch their legs.
Another issue we had with the interior stems from the choice of materials used. The 2012 Civic Hybrid uses a lot of new hard dashboard materials that ultimately give it a cheap look. And considering there is about an $8,000 MSRP gap between the entry-level DX ($16,000) model and the Civic Hybrid ($24,000), thats just not ok in our book. While the cabin interior certainly feels like an exercise in practicality, some design elements prove confusing and odd. Adorning the Civic Hybrids three-spoke steering wheel are buttons for controlling the vehicles cruise control and on-board systems. Unfortunately, Honda continues to place its Bluetooth telephone controls slightly behind, down, and to the left of the bottom spoke. Needless to say it feels incredibly ill-placed and difficult to reach.
                  Tacking on that tech

Naturally, we expect a robust amount of tech in cars these days, more so with hybrids and electrics, and thankfully the Civic Hybrid delivers. Packed in the fuel-sipping Civic are Hondas optional navigation system, Bluetooth audio, and handsfree calling interface.
Our first impression with the navigation system was solid. Hondas screen resolution seems dated and more pixelated than others we have come across, but it nevertheless gets the job done its just not a very pretty job. Navigating the various menus is relatively simple, but Hondas system gets marked down for its awkward design choice. Ironically, while the rest of the cabin is simple and straightforward, the button clusters flanking each side of the LCD display are too small to handle without proving distracting. Thankfully the touchscreen proves relatively responsive, but there were times when spouts of fidgeting were required.
The inclusion of a second screen, Hondas i-MID display, located just above the dashboard and next to the digital speedometer, proves a welcome feature, however, as it displays trip information, fuel economy figures, turn-by-turn navigation directions, and audio source information. With a simple press of the button located on the steering wheel, drivers can shuffle through the aforementioned displays, which are extremely helpful while driving, and much less distracting when viewing. Like the Honda CR-V, users can customize the wallpaper in the I-MID by uploading pictures via USB. Interestingly, of the two displays, we found the I-MID to be much more vivid and clear. Looking back and forth between the larger navigation display and the I-MID in quick succession provided the clearest example of disparity between the two displays.
Overall we really liked the I-MID display. In addition to the aforementioned functions, the I-MID is helpful for monitoring the Civic Hybrids Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology. Here, drivers can see the battery charge state as well as whether or not youre utilizing power from the gasoline or electric engine. The I-MID is also where the Civic Hybrid houses its Eco display, which monitors and displays your driving habits and relays your frugal driving efforts with little green tree icons. More trees equal better, more fuel efficient, driving.
For music lovers, the Civic Hybrid features an upgraded 16-watt, six-speaker stereo that allows for various audio sources, such as a single-disc CD player, AM/FM radio, Satellite Radio, USB connectivity, and wireless audio streaming. The Civic Hybrid also offers FM traffic reports, which undoubtedly prove useful for those unwilling to spring for subscription-based services on offer.
Drivers looking to make use of the Civic Hybrids voice command functions will be happy to learn the system operates with little to no hiccups. Syncing your address book is fairly quick, and placing calls through voice is intuitive too. Now if Honda would just place the corresponding call buttons in another location.
                  Been there, done that

Step out of the Civic Hybrid and youll be even more hard-pressed to identify it as a mother earth-loving eco-warrior on wheels. There really isnt much to work with here, but look hard enough and youll spot the difference. Up front the Civic Hybrid features a slightly noticeable blue hue slotted into its chromed-out grille. That slight blue accent can also be traced to both the front headlamps and vehicles rear taillamps. Of course if that proves too difficult, the rear of the vehicle subtly displays a hybrid badge.
For many that wont be an issue, the Civic still sells remarkably well. But Honda, and the Civic cannot live off its reputation forever, especially when other automakers are nipping at its heels.Whats more concerning though than being able to distinguish a Civic Hybrid from a standard Civic is just how difficult it is to distinguish a 2012 model to a 2011 model. The Civic might enjoy a storied history indeed, but it lacks the sort of style and flair many of its competitors are sporting, mainly offerings from Hyundai and Kia. Of course style isnt everything, but with a little more spice thrown into its design language, the Civic has the potential to reach the heights it enjoyed throughout the 1990s. In its current form, the 2012 Civic, hybrid or otherwise, exhibits a dream-inducing aesthetic and seems far too derivative of past iterations to generate any type of excitement.
                  44 is the magic number

While the standard Civic engine bay is occupied by a 1.8-liter, 140 horsepower internal combustion engine, the 2012 Honda Civic, like its predecessors, is whats known as a mild-hybrid, one that cannot turn its wheels on electric power alone. Prior to 2012, the Civic Hybrid has utilized a nickel-metal-hydride battery. That has changed for the 2012 model, which now makes use a lithium-ion pack. In addition to weighing less than the nickel-metal-hydride battery, the lithium-ion pack takes up less space in the vehicles trunk.
Sending power to the wheels of the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid is the combination of a 15-kilowatt electric motor and 1.5-liter engine mated to Hondas continuously variable transmission (CVT). While most CVTs have a tendency to feel cumbersome and limited, the Civic Hybrids feels spot on. The transmission allows for three different drive modes: Drive (D), Sport (S), and Low-ratio (L). Drive is the standard operating mode and provides the most balanced throttle response. Sport on the other hand gives the Civic Hybrid a little boost of the line and allows for quicker acceleration and higher rev changes (Pro tip: S mode also disables the vehicles automatic start/stop mechanism). Finally, Low-ratio is simply there, well because we never had the need to use it, although traditionally L has been used for vehicle towing, but we cant see anyone actually using the Civic Hybrid to tow anything
On a quick side note, we really liked the Civic Hybrids start/stop technology, which integrates through the IMA system. Where some systems, even those seen in premium vehicles like the BMW 335i, tend to make their presence known very well, the start/stop in the Civic Hybrid goes relatively unnoticed.
EPA estimated fuel economy for the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid sits at 44 mpg in the city, 44 mpg on the highway, and 44 mpg combined. Of all Hondas currently on the market the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid is the most fuel efficient, even beating out the Honda Insight which is capable of netting 41 mpg in the city, 44 mpg on the highway, and 42 mpg combined.
                  Handling/Drive Dynamics

Overall the 2012 Civic Hybrid provides a calm, confident ride. Acceleration is handled well and the constant focus of the drivetrain to accommodate for, and provide, the best possible fuel economy doesnt muddle an otherwise lively drive character. Handling was consistently sharp and the electric steering system gave a respectable amount of feedback throughout our driving time.
                  Finish Line

Ultimately, drivers considering a hybrid are doing so with fuel economy sitting at or near the top of their priorities list. In that regard the Civic Hybrid is one of the best in its class, especially for those not impressed with the more eccentric style espoused by cars like the Toyota Prius or Hondas own Insight. At the same time, those seriously considering the Civic Hybrid should do so knowing that other vehicles, like the standard Prius and the diminutive Prius C, will return considerably more miles per gallon. Although, in the case of the Prius C you have a much smaller vehicle, and in the case of the standard Prius Liftback be prepared to pay a little more , although not by much.
Still, those that prefer the green vehicles they drive to retain a greater degree of ambiguity will invariably favor the Civic Hybrid. Otherwise, if fuel economy is truly what youre after, better options exist in Hondas Japanese rival.

                    AJAC Best SUV/CUV under $35,000

All terrain driving on a budget| Glen Woodcock

Of all 11 categories at the 2013 Canadian Car of the Year competition, none was more hotly contested than Best New SUV/CUV Under $35,000. When the voting was tallied, only three points separated the top three entries.

The winner was the Ford Escape EcoBoost, which scored 639 points compared to 637 for the Subaru XV Crosstrek and 636 for Honda CR-V.

The judges, all members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), thought Escape was best even though its as-tested price of $33,379 was highest of the six in the category.

Escape now goes up against the Hyundai Santa Fe, winner of Best SUV/CUV Over $35K, for 2013 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, with the winner announced at the 2013 Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto in February 2013.

In alphabetical order, here is a brief look at the entries. All have seating for five and feature ABS and traction control, and only Trax was not equipped with AWD.

                    Chevrolet Trax

Based on the Sonic sedan, Trax had the best fuel economy, at 7.1 L/100km. With a 0-100 km/h time of 10.3 seconds, Trax was quicker than CX-5 and Crosstrek and only 0.4 seconds slower than Escape. At an as-tested price of $24,430 Trax was the least expensive but had the smallest cargo area and got the lowest marks for interior roominess/comfort/access.

                    Ford Escape

The new Escape overcame its price disadvantage by scoring highest for overall quality, interior styling, convenience and entertainment features, throttle response, ride comfort and safety features. Cargo capacity of 971 litres was third best. In dynamic testing, Escapes 178-hp EcoBoost engine registered 9.9 seconds from 0-100 km/h (beaten only by CR-V) and its 100-0 stopping distance of 39.6 metres was shortest by more than a metre.

                    Honda CR-V

The third-place CR-V led the field in best cargo space (1,054 litres) and engine smoothness/refinement, and tied Escape for best throttle response. The 2.4L engine makes 185 hp and is mated to a smooth five-speed automatic, making it a blast to drive. Well-equipped at $28,140, CR-Vs time of 9.8 seconds was quickest from 0-100 km/h. It blew away the opposition with a time of 6.4 seconds in the 80-120 km/h passing test.

                    Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Although Sante Fe finished fourth here, priced at $30,299, a loaded version finished first in the over $35K category. Judges liked the cabins roominess/comfort/access and also scored it highest for dealing with noise, vibration and harshness. Its cargo capacity of 1,033 litres was beaten only by CR-V. With a 190-hp, 2.5L inline four and six-speed automatic, 0-100 km/h acceleration was middle of the pack at 10.1 seconds.

                    Mazda CX-5

As-tested at $32,750, only Escape was more expensive than CX-5. Judges scored it highest for driver position and ergonomics, steering and brake feel. But they didnt like the throttle response or smoothness/refinement. With its 155-hp, 2.0-litre engine and six-speed automatic, CX-5 struggled to stay ahead of Crosstrek in the acceleration tests, posting times of 10.7 seconds from 0-100 km/h and 7.9 from 80-120.

                    Subaru XV Crosstrek

Basically a tall Impreza, Crosstreks as-tested price of $25,795 was bettered only by the Trax. Judges thought it good value for the money. They also rated it highest for exterior styling, handling and visibility. Its combined fuel economy of 7.2 L/100km was second best but its cargo carrying capacity of 632 litres was second worst. With a 148-hp, 2.0-litre boxer engine and CVT, it was slowest both from 0-100 km/h (10.8 seconds) and from 80-120 (7.8 seconds).

C&D Puts the VW Passat Against Newcomers Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima

It's the most popular passenger car segment in the U.S.A. with well over 1 million annual sales and four representatives in 2011's list of the 10 bestselling models overall, including the Toyota Camry that finished 3rd behind the Ford F-Series and Chevy Silverado trucks, followed by the Nissan Altima (4th overall), Ford Fusion (6th) and Honda Accord (9th).

We are talking of course about the mid-size category, which is the subject of Car & Driver's (C&D) magazine latest comparison test.

The publication took its previous winner, the North American market VW Passat (not to be confused with the Passat sold in other regions) that beat the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata, and compared it against three newcomers, the 2013 versions of the Ford Fusion (to be sold in Europe as the new Mondeo), Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

It's worth mentioning that all four models are manufactured in the States.

All cars tested start at around the $26,000 mark (equal to 20,450 at today's exchange rates), with the Passat sporting a 177hp 2.5L inline five, the Fusion a 178hp 1.6L turbocharged four, the Accord an 185hp 2.4L straight four, and the Altima an 182hp 2.5L inline-four.

The Ford and the VW get 6-speed autos while the two Japanese models feature a CVT. You can check out the full specs from C&D here.

To make a long story short, the Volkswagen not only lost its temporary crown to the, -surprise, surprise- Honda Accord, but it actually finished in last behind the Fusion (2nd) and the Altima (3rd) in the magazine's test.

For a more detailed look at the four cars, hop over the break to watch C&D's comparison video.

Honda Demonstrates Automatic Emergency Braking, Green Wave, And i-ACC Technologies

Tokyo Honda has set itself the ambitious goal of having zero collisions in its cars ten years from now, and hinges most of that safety improvement on adding active safety features that help prevent accidents, as well as Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technologies to give drivers more warning about their surroundings. We sampled some of the new ideas at a briefing at Hondas R&D center in Japan.

The first new feature is Automatic Emergency Braking. Like similar systems from other automakers AEB sounds an alarm inside the cabin and can apply the brakes if a front-end collision is imminent. The system is aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities and currently only works at speeds up to 37 mph, but it proved very effective in our brief test. We drove a test car fitted with AEB at a steady 31 mph toward a dummy of a pedestrian. As we approached, the cars instrument cluster flashed a warning and produced loud chirping, then the system applied full braking power and stopped the car a few feet away from the pedestrian cutout. AEB brakes so aggressively that the tires chirped and the ABS system activated. We repeated the demo with another pedestrian cutout that was suddenly pushed out in front of our car, and AEB stopped the car equally well.

AEB uses input from a windshield-mounted camera and a millimeter-wave radar sensor in the cars grille. That allows the car to determine the position, speed, and even direction of a pedestrian. The system can also prevent crashes with cars or other solid objects that are at least one meter (three feet) tall. Based on crash data from Japan, Honda estimates that AEB could prevent about 90 percent of all pedestrian fatalities caused by cars traveling 37 mph or slower.

                      Riding The Green Wave

Hondas so-called Green Wave technology aims to promote safety and better fuel economy by providing the driver with directions on how to drive. Infrared transmitters on traffic lights transmit data to sensors in the cars passenger window and dashboard, which interpret the information and display in on a screen mounted in the dashboard. Honda used IR technology rather than radio waves because many Japanese traffic lights already have IR transmitters, and the government plans to overall and expand the V2I transmitters within the next two or three years.

The first part of the Green Wave recommends a driving speed at which the car will reach the next traffic light when its green. In our test Japanese-market Honda Odyssey, this meant we traveled at 26 mph while a control car in the adjacent lane drove at about 35 mph. While the other car had to brake, stop at a simulated red light, and then accelerate again, we breezed through the fake intersection about five seconds after the light turned green. This is designed to promote smoother, more fuel-efficient urban driving, and to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions from frequent stop-and-go traffic. But it might frustrate other drivers who wonder why youre driving so slowly.

Green Wave also lets drivers know when traffic lights will turn green, so theyre less likely to be rear-ended by impatient drivers. A series of five bars on the in-car screen counts down, until it displays Confirm road ahead and the traffic light turns green. Honda believes Green Wave could go into production in about two to three years.

Adaptive Cruise Control With Cut-In Prediction

i-ACC is Hondas enhancement of adaptive cruise control, which benefits from a new feature called Cut-In Prediction. With normal adaptive cruise systems, the computer will brake aggressively and then subsequently re-accelerate when another vehicle changes lanes in front of the car. Hondas system, by contrast, guesses when a car in an adjacent lane may move over and adjusts its speed pro-actively.

i-ACC uses a camera and radar to track up to six vehicles, and uses information like closing speeds between vehicles to determine which cars are likely to change lanes. Honda says Cut-In Prediction can react up to five seconds earlier than normal adaptive cruise control, keeping a safer distance between vehicles and also saving fuel by driving more smoothly. The front-facing camera can also be tasked with lane-departure warning and traffic-sign recognition duties. Honda showed a static demo of i-ACC in an Accord sedan, but didnt allow us to test the system.

Hondas New Lightweight And Compact Hybrid System

Honda has improved both its hybrid system and its hybrid strategy, developing a lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid system for small vehicles.

Honda calls this system the SPORTS HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive system.

This hybrid system is the latest addition to the Earth Dreams Technology series of Honda powertrain technology that aims to combine driving performance and good fuel economy.

Combined to the SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive for mid-sized vehicles and the SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD (SPORT HYBRID Super Handling - All Wheel Drive), the SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive will allow Honda to offer a SPORT HYBRID system for any vehicle sizes and characteristics.

The new powertrain in the one-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive combines a newly developed inline 4-cylinder 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT). According to Honda, its built-in high-output motor and lithium-ion battery improve efficiency by more than 30 percent compared to a conventional one-motor hybrid system.

Honda also said that the combination of the one-motor hybrid system and the engine offers sporty driving during acceleration and high-speed cruising by using the clutches to engage the engine. With this system, electric vehicle (EV) driving is utilized during start up and low- to medium-speed cruising by using the clutches to disengage the engine.

You can expect this system to appear in the next generation Fit.

Hondas new hybrid strategy also relies on the two-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive / Plug-in.

Honda says this is the worlds most efficient two-motor hybrid system optimized for mid-sized vehicles.

The adoption of high-efficiency /high-output motors offers quick acceleration with an EV-like driving feel and high fuel economy, but combining this to the flexibility of a hybrid.

Honda says this hybrid system achieves the worlds highest efficiency by combining a newly-developed engine dedicated for hybrid vehicles (the Earth Dreams Technology new 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine); an electric CVT coupled to two built-in motors and a lock-up clutch; a lithium-ion battery; and making it all work in sync through a smart system which can switch modes to match driving styles and situations.

The system switches the operation among three driving modes. EV Drive for driving powered only by the electric motor using electricity from the battery and regeneration during deceleration; Engine Drive for medium-to high-speed cruising with the engine and axle directly connected by a lock-up clutch and engine power being mechanically transferred to the wheels; and Hybrid Drive for urban driving and powerful acceleration using the electric motor with electricity generated by the engine.

This two-motor hybrid system, which is also suitable as a plug-in hybrid system, will be installed to the North American version of the Accord, scheduled to be introduced to the market in January 2013.

Third in Hondas new strategy is the three-motor SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD (SPORT HYBRID Super Handling - All Wheel Drive).

According to Honda, this system combines a V6 engine to a high-output three-motor system allowing for acceleration equivalent to that of a V8 engine, but with fuel economy better than that of an inline 4-cylinder engine.

A new V6 3.5-liter direct-injection engine is installed in the front of the vehicle and is combined to a newly-developed 7-speed DCT system with a built-in motor. This Honda technology also uses two motors installed in the rear to control torque distribution to the right and left rear wheels.

Using independent motors for the right and left rear wheels, positive torque is applied to the outside wheel and negative torque is applied to the inside wheel, making independent control of torque distribution to the rear wheels possible without relying on engine output.

Interestingly, depending on the radius of the curve, the energy generated by the inside wheel is recovered electrically and applied to the outside wheel to self-generate torque necessary for the vehicle to make the turn.

Honda proudly stated these latest advancements in electric vehicle technologies further progress Honda towards making the Sport Hybrid, such as the forthcoming new NSX model, a reality.

Honda Aims For Crash-less Cars In 10 Years
The automaker will use technology to keep its cars from hitting people, objects and other cars

TOKYO Bringing the Japanese fascination with technology to its cars, Honda plans on introducing software in the next 10 years that could keep its cars from ever crashing into anything ever. Or at least, that's the goal.

The company is pushing researchers to find ways to make its cars smarter about detecting pedestrians, determining which cars may cut in front of you, and eventually using vehicle-to-vehicle communication to keep cars from crashing.

Honda CEO Takanobu Ito said the automaker is trying to balance its commitment to safety with its culture of proving fun-to-drive cars.

"Our philosophy is that the cars should not be controlling the driver, the driver should enjoy driving," Ito said in a small group interview with journalists at Honda's research and development facility in the Tochigi prefecture, Japan. "At the same time, we are happy to develop technology that helps assist drivers be safer drivers."

In other words, don't expect Honda to develop driverless cars. They'll leave that to the Googles of the world.

The automaker is focusing its efforts now on preventing pedestrian crashes because those have the highest fatality rates and rear-end crashes, because those are the most frequent accident type.

We got to test drive some of the technologies at Honda's annual meeting. The automaker is hoping it will bring some of these tools to Japan and the U.S. in 2 to 3 years.

Here's what they've already got in the works:

Pedestrian detection: Many automakers are already working on this kind of technology, with mixed results. Cars use cameras or radar technology to sense when a person-shaped thing is walking in the road. The car will brake to help avoid the crash.

Honda is trying to up the game in pedestrian avoidance systems by having its system work at higher speeds. Other systems tend to work only up to 30 to 40 mph; Honda's will bring its cars to a full stop even if the car is going 50 mph when it detects someone crossing the road.

Green light timer: Honda calls this simple-but-smart technology "Green Wave Driving Support System." It's essentially a visual timer that lets drivers know how fast they should drive to make sure they make it to the next light while it's still green.

Many drivers go too fast in between lights, wasting gas as they accelerate and then stepping hard on the brakes when they need to stop. The green light system shows a green bar along the speedometer, letter drivers know they should go, say, 35 to 45 mph between lights to make sure they get to the next one while it's green.

It also has a countdown bar on the speedometer that tells the driver how much longer until a red light turns green.

Honda said it believes the green light timer will save gas and prevent rear-end collisions, because people won't need to slam on the brakes as often.

Adaptive cruise control with cut-in detection: Adaptive cruise control is still a pretty rough technology. Although it does a fabulous job of keeping space between cars by adjusting vehicle speed, it only senses the car in front of it. So if a car cuts into your lane, your car will brake suddenly and heavily, which could result in a rear-end crash.

Honda's cut-in prediction adaptive cruise control senses six cars on the road in front of it across multiple lanes, judging their speed and size. If, for example, there is a slow-moving truck in the lane to your right, it can sense if a faster-moving car suddenly comes up on the right and will predict that that car will turn quickly into your lane. The car will ease off the gas or slowly engage the brake to let the car slow down slightly.

Further down the line, Honda plans to introduce radars that can detect whether motorcycles are heading into a driver's path (another segment of car crashes that ends up in high fatalities), vehicle-to-vehicle communications that could prevent intersection crashes, steering control through cruise control that would keep a car in its lane, and head-on collision avoidance.

                      Honda teases new NSX tech
Trick chassis systems are an impressive preview to Honda's forthcoming supercar

                      http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/ne...s-new-nsx-tech

HONDA engineers have given a glimpse into the technology that could underpin the next-generation NSX supercar. Two new chassis set-ups were demonstrated this weekend at Hondas Tochigi Research and Development centre, both fitted into new-generation Accord saloons. Autocar was able to sample both prototypes on Hondas handling circuit.

One of the Accords was fitted the prototype Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive hybrid drivetrain. The other was fitted with a new electronic rear-wheel steering system. Both are said to be designed to significantly enhance handling and driver pleasure.

Honda engineers say that the Precision All Wheel Steer technology is the closest to realisation, with the potential for it to appear in production within two years. Work on the SH-AWD hybrid drivetrain is less well advanced, with 2015 the most likely potential production date.

Sources say it is possible that both of these systems could be fitted to the next-generation NSX, also expected in 2015. The mid-engined supercar will use the all-wheel drive system in conjunction with the electric motors housed in its front wheels.

                      Super-handling all-wheel drive

This Accord prototype uses a new 3.5-litre, direct-injection, V6 engine upfront, driving the front wheels through a new, wide-ratio, seven-speed dual clutch transmission. This box also incorporates an electric motor of at least 30kW power. Driving the rear wheels is a pair of 20kW electric motors, powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, which is charged by the electric motor inside the gearbox. Honda claims that this drivetrain also offers the performance of a V8 engine and the fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder engine.

SH-AWD not only offers all-wheel drive, the twin electric motors driving the rear wheels can be manipulated to help the car steer more keenly into bends. On a right hand bend, the motor driving the inside wheel can have its torque output reduced and the motor on the outside wheel has its torque output increased. The effect is to steer the whole car more aggressively into a bend as well as delivering the advantage of all-wheel drive.

On Hondas tightly drawn handling circuit, the SH-AWD was not overly impressive in terms of improving handling. While the torque tweaks may have helped the car enter a corner more fleetly, while rounding the bend the Accord felt like any large, front drive saloon. Prolonged hard cornering left the steering feeling vague and disconnected, with a good quarter of free-turn at the rim. And as the car straightened up out of hard bend, the whole chassis betrayed the sudden unloading of forces with a slight shimmer.

While this new drivetrain is a clever way of providing V8-levels of performance, hybrid assistance and all-wheel drive, it does not particularly enhance the handling of this big, front-drive, Accord. However, fitted into a mid-engined car, with the front wheels driven by the electric motors, it could provide a very intriguing basis for a new NSX.

                      Precision all-wheel steer

The second Accord prototype was fitted with a much less complex, and rather more familiar, technology. Rear wheel steering was used by Honda in the 1980s, but this new set-up is electronic rather than mechanical and is a lot more sophisticated in its operation.

The Accords multi-link rear suspension has the toe control links replaced with an electronic actuator. Both hub carriers are mounted in such a way as to allow the rear wheels to be steered in either direction by up to 2deg. The rear actuators use information from the engine, electric power steering and the vehicle stability systems to decide by how much and in what direction the rear wheels should be steered.

Although rear-wheel steering has well-known advantages, such as making high-speed land changes safer, this system can also toe-in the rear wheels during braking, greatly improving stability.

On Hondas handling circuit, the system was a revelation. Even though the Accord is a large front-driver with a V6 engine in the nose, it handled the very long, tight, bends like a rear-driver. As well as allowing the driver to take the corners at high speed, understeer was all-but eliminated.

Even under hard acceleration, the steering remained extremely accurate, making it possible to place the inside front wheel precisely on the inside edge of the track, even following the changes in radius. The Accord also remained remarkably stable coming out of bends as the cars weight shifted.

Its not yet clear whether this rear-steering could be combined with the rear-drive layout of a future NSX, but theres no doubt that this new-generation electronic system is extraordinarily effective. Retro-fitting it onto the 2015 Civic Type R would, however, be an expensive job: Precision All Wheel Steer can only be fitted to multi-link rear suspensions and the Civic family uses a beam axle.

Getting a Taste for Hondas Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Versions of the Accord

Honda has been teasing us with Accord hybrid details for more than a year now, going back to the 2010 L.A. auto show when the big H debuted its plug-in hybrid platform intended for use in a mid-size sedan. Earlier this year, we had the chance to drive the Accord plug-in hybrids running gear fitted to a last-gen Accord. Now, weve had a chance to drive the production version of both the Accord plug-in, which comes out early next year, and the standard Accord hybrid, which is set to bow later in 2013.
As we earlier in the year, the hybrid system is unique among current configurations. Gasoline power comes from a 2.0-liter inline-four running the Atkinson combustion cycle. With an electric water pump, electric A/C compressor, and even electric variable-valve timing, the engine has no accessory drive belt. Attached to a system of clutches and both a generator and drive motor, the system can run in a number of configurations: full EV mode, using electric power derived from the combustion engines generator, the engine driving the wheels with electric assist, or purely on gasoline propulsion.

It sounds complicated, but behind the wheel its much like driving any other hybrid. Both the standard and plug-in use the same powertrain; the only difference is the size of the lithium-ion battery pack. Honda hasnt said how big the hybrid battery will be, but the plug-in uses the same 6.7-kWh unit used in the upcoming RLX. Both cars pull strong away from a stop. In our brief time behind the wheel we prefer the plug-in, if only for the ease with which it moves in EV mode. The standard hybrid, while less of a novelty, smoothly blends gas and electric propulsion. Honda hasnt announced any fuel-economy information, but dont be surprised if the standard hybrid posts best-in-class EPA figures. The current mid-size mileage champ, the Ford Fusion hybrid, has been rated for 47 mpg in both city and highway cycles.

Honda Develops New Lightweight and Compact Hybrid System Named "Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive"

Three Different Honda SPORT HYBRID Systems Accommodate Different Vehicle Characteristics --

TOKYO, Japan, November 13, 2012 - Honda Motor Co. Ltd. developed the SPORTS HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive system, a lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid system optimized for small-sized vehicles. This new hybrid system will be the latest addition to the Earth Dreams Technology series of new generation powertrain technology that realize both excellent driving performance and fuel economy at a high level.

Together, with the SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive, the world's most efficient*1 two-motor hybrid system optimized for mid-sized vehicles, and the SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD (SPORT HYBRID Super Handling - All Wheel Drive), the three-motor hybrid system optimized for large-sized vehicles enabling independent control of torque distribution to both right and left rear wheels, the newly developed SPORTY HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive will constitute the lineup of three different Honda SPORT Hybrid systems that accommodate different vehicle characteristics. Honda will continue expanding the application of these hybrid systems based on vehicle characteristics.
*1 Honda's internal research (as of August 2012)

The lineup of SPORT HYBRID systems
                        • One-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive:
In addition to top level fuel economy in its class*2, the fun of driving is realized with acceleration g-force more powerful than that of existing models as well as a rhythmic and linear acceleration feeling. This drive unit combines a newly developed inline 4-cylinder 1.5L Atkinson cycle engine with a 7-speed DCT*3 system with a built-in high-output motor and a lithium-ion battery to improve efficiency by more than 30% compared to a conventional one-motor hybrid system.
                          *2 Hybrid system for a 1.5L engines
                          *3 Dual Clutch Transmission

                          <Outline of the System>
                          • The combination of the one-motor hybrid system and the engine realizes sporty driving during acceleration and high-speed cruising by using the clutches to engage the engine.
                          • Highly efficient electric vehicle (EV) driving is realized during startup and low- to medium-speed cruising by using the clutches to disengage the engine.
                          • This system contributes to the improvement of fuel economy by increasing energy regeneration using the clutches to disengage the engine during deceleration.

                        • Two-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive / Plug-in:
Through the adoption of high-efficiency/high-output motors, both brisk acceleration with an EV-like driving feel and high fuel economy are realized at the same time. This hybrid system realizes the worlds' highest efficiency *1 by combining a newly-developed engine dedicated for hybrid vehicles and an electric CVT coupled with two built-in motors and a lock-up clutch, along with a lithium-ion battery, and by optimally switching the driving mode among three different modes depending on the driving situation. This hybrid system, which is also suitable as a plug-in hybrid system, will be installed to the North American version of the Accord, scheduled to be introduced to the market in January 2013.
                          <Outline of the System>
                          • The system switches to the operation among the following three driving modes depending on driving conditions and the battery charge level:
                          • "EV drive" for driving by the electric motor using electricity from the battery and regeneration during deceleration
                          • "Engine Drive" for medium- to high-speed cruising with the engine and axle directly connected by a lock-up clutch and engine power is mechanically transferred to the wheels
                          • "Hybrid Drive" for urban driving and powerful acceleration using the motor with electricity generated by the engine.

                        • Three-motor SPORT HYBRID SH-AWD (SPORT HYBRID Super Handling - All Wheel Drive):

The combination of a V6 engine and this high-output three-motor system realizes acceleration performance equivalent to that of a V8 engine with fuel economy better than that of an inline 4-cylinder engine. A new V6 3.5L direct-injection engine is installed in the front of the vehicle and combined with a newly-developed 7-speed DCT system with a built-in motor. This unique Honda technology uses two motors installed in the rear to control torque distribution to the right and left rear wheels.

                          <Outline of the System>
                          • Using independent motors for the right and left rear wheels, positive torque is applied to the outside wheel and negative torque is applied to the inside wheel, making independent control of torque distribution to the rear wheels possible without relying on engine output.
                          • Depending on the radius of the curve, the energy generated by the inside wheel is recovered electrically and applied to the outside wheel to self-generate torque necessary for the vehicle to make the turn.

Honda Prepares for 50th Anniversary in Baja

Torrance, CA: It was 50 years ago that a Honda motorcycle first took on the challenge of Mexicos Baja Peninsulaa fitting send-off for the JCR Honda racing team as it prepares to extend Hondas unmatched record of success in this years Baja 1000.

In 1962, Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson set off from Tijuana, Mexico and established a record-time run to La Paz on the tip of the Baja Peninsula. Their epic run aboard two Honda CL72 Scramblers was aimed at demonstrating the tough character of these new production bikes. That run set the stage for what would become one of the most famous long-distance off-road races in the world, the Baja 1000.

Over the years, Honda motorcycles have won the Baja 1000 a record 22 times. Hondas current win streak extends back 15 years, and this year the JCR Honda team of Johnny Campbell, Colton Udall, David Kamo and Timmy Weigand will attempt to make it 16 years in a row.

Many racers in a wide variety of classes have chosen to ride Honda motorcycles and ATVs in this years Baja 1000, but one of the most attention-grabbing entries this year has to be the 2x Honda CRF450X piloted by Chris Ridgway, Jim Wazny and Mario Panagiotopoulos from the HERO Racing Team. HERO is an acronym for Helping Everyone Reach Outa charitable endeavor aimed at assisting amputees. And yes, all three riders are left-leg amputees, riding with prosthetic legs. The team will be riding in the Open Pro Class 22, and by luck of the draw their number was chosen to lead off all motorcycle racers when the race kicks off on November 14.

All this and more promises to make this years SCORE Baja 1000 a memorable race indeed.

                          http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs...5-4dbb8080669f

Honda revamps hybrid powertrains, promises greater efficiency
New technology is tailored to the size of the vehicle and would offer 1, 2 or even 3 electric motors.

HONDA has overhauled its hybrid technology for the first time in 13 years, a major shift that it says will allow more efficient performance, particularly on compact and large vehicles.

Honda's current Integrated Motor Assist, which has been in use since the first 2-seat Insight in 1999, uses what is essentially an extra-large starter motor to assist the small gasoline engine. As a result, the system is lighter and cheaper than Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, but cannot start or run any of Honda's current hybrids solely on electric power. As a result, Honda hybrids don't even match the stellar fuel economy ratings of the Prius.

Honda's new systems are tailored to the size of the vehicle, eschew continuously variable transmissions for 7-speed dual-clutch units and use more powerful lithium-ion batteries instead of nickel-metal hydride.

Its smallest hybrid system installs a small electric motor directly inside the gearbox, which will finally allow low-speed electric driving and can disengage the engine during coasting -- similar to what Porsche allows on its Cayenne Hybrid.

The automaker's midsize solution -- which will be used on the 2014 Accord plug-in hybrid -- uses two electric motors that can allow electric driving for several miles and has two other performance settings.

Larger vehicles such as the Acura MDX could be equipped with Honda's all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain. This system would pair a 3.5-liter V6 engine with three electric motors -- two of which would independently drive each rear wheel and apply different torque levels to improve cornering performance (it's similar to what Acura's current SH-AWD system offers). Honda says each of the rear-wheel motors could be charged against the other, so energy generated from one wheel can be applied simultaneously to the other.

Honda hasn't released any models, other than the Accord, that would use this technology, nor has it mentioned cost, fuel economy or availability. But if Honda succeeds, Toyota (and now, increasingly, Ford) may finally have some real mileage competition.

Honda Odyssey remains a great family hauler

The Honda Odyssey has been among the most popular models in a minivan segment that has dwindled over the years but remains a steady presence in the market. The Odyssey was redesigned last year, getting a sportier, sleeker look.

The Odyssey comes with one engine, a 3.5-liter V-6, and is front-wheel drive only. There are five trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring and Touring Elite.

The EX model added Bluetooth connectivity, Honda's intelligent Multi-Information Display with an 8-inch screen and a USB port as standard for the 2012 model year.

Engineers at Honda have designed the Odyssey to have better sightlines than its predecessors and competitors. The sliding door rails sit far below the windows. The Odyssey also includes standard 17-inch wheels, with 18-inchers being optional. Other options include the power liftgate, power moonroof, xenon high-intensity headlights and power-sliding side doors.

On the inside, the Odyssey, which seats up to eight, has a long list of family friendly features that make this a wonderful vehicle for those seeking convenience. For instance, theres a ring in the middle row of seats that can be pulled up and upon which can be mounted a trash bag. Theres also a center console that is cooled and can store beverages.

In the front row, Honda has updated the center console with easier-to-read controls, and the cabin area is roomier, as well. A power drivers seat is standard, and Honda has added a feature to the second row of seats that allows it to move closer to the front row, which would come in handy if youre a parent having to attend to a young child passenger.

The third row of seats can fold flat, a standard feature that enables easier use of cargo space.

The Odyssey is a little on the pricey side, starting at around $28,500 and ranging to around $44,000.

But for a nicely equipped, well-designed and dare we say somewhat sporty minivan, the Honda Odyssey presents a pretty good value.

Production hitch hits Hondas CR-V output

HUNDREDS of Honda employees are returning to work today after production of the CR-V model was suspended due to a technical fault earlier this week.

About 750 people employed in Car Plant 1 in South Marston, where the CR-V is produced, were off work for two days this week after the failure of a key tool on Monday.

The fault, which has affected the production of about 2,000 cars, is currently being fixed and about 500 workers are set to return to work today, with about 250 more returning tomorrow.

A spokesman for Honda said: Whilst very inconvenient and at a time when Honda is in full swing of production of the acclaimed new CR-V to meet strong market demand across Europe, Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM) is working with its suppliers and Honda Japan to resolve the issue and resume production as soon as possible, but remains confident this issue will not adversely affect overall supply of the new CR-V.

We will be back in production from today. It will be a phased introduction and key areas will start production in the morning.

Everything will be back to normal on Friday.

The part affected is a unique welded body part for CR-V models built at HUM.

Immediate counter measure were put in place to minimise the disruption to production after the fault occurred.

Car Plant 2 and the engine plant were unaffected by the disruption.

Workers who were not required to work will have their hours debited under HUMs Demand Led Scheduling system. There will be no loss of pay.

Demand Led Scheduling is a flexible hours system which increases hours when demand is high and reduces hours when production is lower.

Employees have individual working time accounts, which credit and debit the hours against a standard 37 hours week.

About 150 workers used the time away from Car Plant 1 on Tuesday and Wednesday as an opportunity to take up extra training.

Honda employs 3,500 associates. At the end of this financial year on March 31, Hondas production in Swindon will be 182,000 a figure which is unlikely to change for 2013-14, giving full-time work for the associates in Swindon.

                          Cars that depreciate the least

Next to a home, a car is one of the largest investments you will make. It is well known that the minute a new car leaves the sales lot it depreciates in value. What you may not realize is that depreciation is the single largest cost in owning a car. Over a five-year period, depreciation accounts for roughly 48% of your cars total cost of ownership (TCO). When consumers are researching cars, depreciation isnt usually a factor. This is unfortunate since depreciation can be as much as 20% the instant you leave the sales lot.

                          What Is Depreciation?
Depreciation is defined as the decrease in value of an asset by the length of its useful life. That useful life, and therefore its deprecation, is affected by factors such as the original purchase price, sales tax, gas prices, automotive loan interest rates, insurance premiums, maintenance and repairs, and automaker reputation. Determining the depreciation of a car isnt easy. You must do research on the model you are considering. First, determine the new car price for that model. Next, look at the price of used models. You must also factor in the residual value of the used vehicle to get an accurate picture of its depreciation. Banks use the average figure of 16.5% depreciation per year. The residual value would be what the car is worth after the depreciation is subtracted. There are multiple lists published by car guides, auto magazines and consumer reporting groups of cars that depreciate the least.

                          Honda Fit
The Fit is one of Hondas newest entries in the sub-compact market, and it is already winning followers. Honda offers several variations of the Fit, including a standard model, sport model and sport with navigation model. You can choose either the manual or automatic transmission. It comes standard with side-curtain airbags, ABS brakes and power windows. The Fit was named a top safety pick by the IIHS. With a manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) between $15,325 and $16,860, it gets 33 mpg/hwy and 27 mpg/city. The Fits residual value after five years is approximately $9,200.

                          MINI Cooper
The MINI Cooper car has a loyal following and offers buyers a good return on investment (ROI). Described as peppy, the MINI Cooper has only experienced a 40% depreciation overall in five years. Priced just below $20,000 ($19,400) for the basic model, it has four-star rollover safety ratings and front and side airbags. Traction control is standard. The re-introduced MINI Cooper debuted in the U.S. in the 2002 model year. The 2002 model is still selling for around $7,000.

                          Honda Civic
Honda has more vehicles near the top of lists provided by automotive guides than any other automaker. Its consistent reliability over the years has made it a sought after brand. The Civic offers buyers many different model options including four coupe styles (DX, EX, EX-L and LX) and seven sedan styles (Natural Gas, Natural Gas and Navigation, DX, EX, EX-L, HF, and LX). A basic model with a sticker price starting at $15,600 will get you a front-wheel-drive coupe with manual transmission that is rated at 26 mpg/city and 36 mpg/hwy. Driver air bags, side air bags and side head air bags earned a five-star safety rating for the Civic. A five-year-old Civic Coupe goes for $8,000. Even a 10-year-old 2003 model will fetch around $5,800.

                          Acura TL
The Acura TL was a top recommended current buy from NADAGuides. With 29 mpg/hwy and 23 mpg/city, this entry from Acura has a very loyal consumer following. The Acura total luxury care package, 305 horsepower, a four-star safety rating and a retail price starting at $32,750 make the Acura an attractive buy that holds value. After five years, the Acura TL can still command $17,500. After 10 years, the Acura TL goes for $7,500 on average.

Toyota and Nissan also offer several nameplates that depreciate slowly. Japanese automakers have long been seen as offering superior reliability and quality over domestic brands, and recent recall issues for Toyota seem to have done little to tarnish the perceived value of Japanese vehicles in the minds of todays car buyers.

                          The Bottom Line
No automotive expert can predict with complete accuracy the depreciation of a particular vehicle. You shouldnt purchase a car solely on the assumption that it wont depreciate as much as another. Unless you purchase a car you enjoy driving, you will hate that car. This is true even if it does hold its value. Many factors such as the economy, fuel prices and the care given to a car can alter its depreciation value. If you want to keep the depreciation of your vehicle at a minimum, take good care of your vehicle and sell it before the mileage gets too high. You should also factor in how long you plan on using the vehicle. If you plan on driving it until it cant be driven any more, depreciation wont matter. If youre planning on driving it for a few years and then buying another vehicle, make sure you know what the vehicles worth will be down the road. Sometimes, buying a used vehicle will be best for that situation, but make sure the used vehicles you look at are worth the price.

Honda Introduces Earth Dreams 1.6-Liter Diesel for Europe

Known for its high-revving VTEC engines and hybrids in the U.S., Honda long resisted developing its own diesel for the European market, where compression-ignition engines have dominated market share for decades. Ironically, it put its one-time Formula One engineer Kenichi Nagahiro, a self-professed diesel hater on its original 2.2-liter i-DTEC engine, noteworthy for its light weight, free-revving nature, and quiet operation at the time. So when it came time to design its next-generation diesel engine, Honda once again aimed high in terms of weight, packaging and fuel economy.

Optimized for D-segment vehicles such as the Accord (sold in the U.S. as the Acura TSX), the 2.2-liter i-DTEC engine was a little large for the smaller Civic, but served in that model nonetheless. For the 2013 European-model Civic, Honda is introducing a more appropriately-sized 1.6-liter diesel, which marks the introduction of the Earth Dreams line of engines in Europe.

Compared to the 2.2-liter engine its replacing in the Civic, the 1.6-liter engine is a significant 104 lb lighter, and improves upon the 2.2-liter engines 53.45 mpg equivalent in the combined European test by more than 10 mpg to 65.3 mpg. Although the 1.6 is slightly down on power compared to the 2.2, its still plenty torquey for the compact Civic, producing 118 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, 30 hp and 37 lb-ft less than the 2.2-liter engine.

The Garrett turbocharger pumps 22 psi into the engine, and the Bosch fuel system operates at a high 26,000 psi for optimized fuel atomization. To reduce emissions, the engine also has high-swirl head ports to reduce hot spots and an exhaust-gas recirculation system to reduce NOx emissions. The engine will be offered first in the Civic in early 2013 and the CR-V later in the year.

                            Auto production up in Mexico

MEXICO CITY Toyotas plan to source cars from Mazdas Mexican plant starting in 2015 highlights global automakers growing reliance on the Latin American nation for quality production as well as lower costs.
Mexicos vehicle output is on pace to reach a record 2.86 million units in 2012, according to researcher LMC Automotive. More is on the way, as Honda is building its first large Mexico assembly plant, Nissan adds a third factory, Ford produces midsize sedans and Volkswagens Audi opens the countrys first luxury vehicle plant in 2016.
Across a range of industries, every single company in America that Ive talked to will tell you that either their best plant or one of their top plants is in Mexico, said Jeff Liker, an engineering professor at the University of Michigan. They can build quality and they can deliver on time.
From Japanese carmakers seeking relief from the strong yen to German and U.S. rivals eager to expand exports to the rest of Latin America, Mexico is evolving from its traditional role as a source of low-cost labor. Automakers are focusing investment within about 483 kilometers of Mexico City to take advantage of the nations newfound reputation for quality.
Mexicos trade agreements covering 44 countries also make it an attractive export platform to ship cars to South America, Asia and Africa as well as the U.S. and Canada.
Mexico has more free trade agreements than the U.S., said Sean McAlinden, a labor economist with the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich. They have a free trade agreement with the EU that saves them a 10 percent tariff thats applied to U.S.-built vehicles. If youre going to build a world car like Q5 or an Infiniti, Mexico is where youre going to do it.
Central Mexico will definitely be the hottest growth area with respect to North American vehicle production this decade, Michael Robinet, managing director of consultant IHS Automotive, said in a telephone interview from Northville, Mich. The shift to Mexico is not only trying to feed the U.S. and Canadian markets, its more of a global production play.
Automakers have announced $7.8 billion in Mexican investments in the past 24 months, McAlinden said.
Mazda agreed to build a Toyota-branded subcompact car based on the Mazda2 hatchback at a $500 million plant the Hiroshima, Japan-based company is building in the central state of Guanajuato. The factory will supply Toyota with 50,000 units of the vehicle annually when production begins in mid-2015.
As with all other regions where we have manufacturing operations, were confident this new vehicle produced in Mexico will be of the highest quality, said Steve Curtis, a spokesperson for Toyotas North American unit.
Ford, seeking to win midsize sedan sales in the U.S. from Toyotas Camry, this year began building a revamped Fusion sedan in Hermosillo, Mexico. The company has said it will also produce the car with looks evocative of an Aston Martin in Flat Rock, Mich., next year. Ford in March said it planned $1.3 billion in upgrades for Hermosillo.
Toyota has operated a small Tacoma pickup factory near Tijuana, Mexico, thats far from the centre of the nations automotive supplier base.
Along with supplying vehicles for the U.S. and Mexican markets, the plant also helps the Toyota City, Japan-based company comply with a national rule requiring major automakers to have at least 50,000 units of local production capacity or face import tariffs.
Toyotas manufacturing agreement with Mazda is just catch-up, said Liker, who also teaches efficient manufacturing techniques to companies. They have too little capacity in Mexico, compared with many other competitors, he said by phone last week from Mexico City.
Toyota tends to take a very long-term view when it makes a decision like this, so I would expect this plant to eventually become a joint-venture between the two, Liker said.
Honda has a small factory in El Salto, Mexico, that assembles CR-V compact SUVs for sale in the U.S. and Mexico to comply with the countrys trade rules. While that facility can produce only about 60,000 vehicles annually, the $800 million plant Tokyo-based Honda is building in Celaya is to have capacity to produce 200,000 Fit small cars annually.
The yens persistent strength relative to the dollar has forced Japans automakers to shift more production outside of their home market to maintain competitive pricing in the U.S., where Toyota and Honda generate most of their profits.
Toyota has a history of manufacturing tie-ups in North America. The company previously operated a joint-venture factory in California for 25 years with the former General Motors that ended with the U.S. companys 2009 bankruptcy.
Since 2007, Fuji Heavy Industriess Subaru plant in Lafayette, Ind., has built Camry sedans for Toyota under contract. Toyota has since increased its equity stake in Fuji Heavy to about 16.5 percent.
While Toyota and Mazda havent built vehicles together in the past, the two carmakers have had a technology-sharing agreement on hybrid-electric systems, said Jeremy Barnes, a spokesperson for Mazdas North American unit in Irvine, Calif.
While the two Japanese automakers share no equity ties, Toyota may take a position in Mazda, said Liker, who specializes in research about the largest Asian automaker.
I wouldnt be surprised, he said. I dont know that thats a plan. That certainly has been the pattern in the past.
Ford formerly held a controlling interest in Mazda. The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker began selling its Mazda stake in 2008 and now holds about 2.1 percent of Mazda shares, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
While Mexicos automobile plants have competitive labor costs and quality levels that are equal to and in some cases greater than those of U.S. plants, automakers can incur other costs that cancel out the benefits, said Ron Harbour, a manufacturing analyst and partner at New York-based consulting company Oliver Wyman.
One source of added cost comes from shipping cars to international markets. Another is drug-related violence, which, according to the Mexican newspaper Milenio, has claimed 57,449 lives since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006.
You can wash away a good chunk of that labour savings with the logistics cost, particularly today when fuel costs have gone up, the cost of containers, the cost of security, Harbour said in a telephone interview from Detroit.
You now have to protect the trucks and trains, which can be looted, he said. Theres all kind of costs that come in addition to the labor savings.
Violence in central Mexico is lower than in much of northern Mexico. Honda and Mazda both chose the central state of Guanajuato for their plants. Audi chose the state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, to assemble its Q5 sport-utility vehicle for the global market. Parent company Volkswagen has produced cars in Mexico since 1967.
Bolstered by the new wave of investment, Mexicos light- vehicle production probably will rise 34 percent to 3.83 million by 2017, according to LMC. The researchers 2.86 million vehicle estimate for this year would make Mexico the worlds eighth- largest auto producer.
We could easily outpace the numbers we have by 2017 with another new plant or two announced, if that were to be the case, said Jeff Schuster, an analyst at LMC. In the past, you saw the Detroit brands moving in there and putting up additional facilities. Now its the South Koreans, the Japanese and the Europeans all looking to expand in Mexico.

Honda rushes 2013 Civic redesign to blunt criticism of current car

Stung by criticism from consumers, its own dealers and auto reviewers, Honda Motor Co. is about to begin selling a significantly redesigned Civic.

The changes come after only a year of the current-generation model. Automakers rarely rush to remake a vehicle so new to the market.

Honda is making changes to the sheet metal on the vehicle to give it a more aggressive, sportier look. Inside, it is improving comfort, changing the much-criticized interior and is revamping the sedan's driving characteristics.

"Our customers frankly had higher expectations of us," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co.

Most of the changes will be unveiled when the car both is debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show and goes on sale later this month.

"It is unparalleled," said Jesse Toprak, an analyst at auto price information company TrueCar Inc. "I don't remember them ever doing it before, but the last redesign was seen as lukewarm at best and negative in general. I give them credit. They accelerated the cycle."

People looking at the 2013 Civic next to the current vehicle will notice the changes.

The new model has a more aggressive bumper and grill. The new hood has a pronounced domed center. The car will come with bent-spoke wheels that convey a sense of movement. The polished alloy portions of the wheels will be set off by black inserts.

The car has a new tail with rear lights that flow into the trunk lid. There are more chrome accents throughout the body.

"It appears they heard the criticism about the current model being too 'safe' in styling. The new one will be competitive in what is now a very crowded segment," Toprak said.

Mendel has a sober assessment of what went wrong.

"We underestimated the level of competition," he said "We greatly underestimated the expectations of customers."

Nonetheless, one thing the current Civic has done well is sell.

Honda has sold 255,000 in the U.S. through the first 10 months of this year, a 39 percent gain compared to the same period last year. It's among the top-selling passenger cars in America and well ahead of rivals, including the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus.

Low-priced leases, which Honda can offer because the car historically has had a fairly strong resale value and attractive financing deals, have helped keep sales high.

The Civic had been Consumer Reports' highest-rated small sedan as well as a "top pick" in five of the past 10 years. But the influential magazine said it could not recommend the current model.

"It scored second to last in CR's ratings of 12 small sedans, followed only by the recently redesigned Volkswagen Jetta," the magazine said. Consumer Reports found the 2012 Civic to be less agile and with lower interior quality than its predecessor. "It also suffers from a choppy ride, long stopping distances and pronounced road noise."

                            ---

                            • Honda 1.5 litre i-VTEC direct-injection engine and G-Design Shift CVT sampled, along with CR-Z facelift

The Sport Hybrid systems, including the all-new single-motor Intelligent Dual-Clutch Drive, werent the only highlights at the 2012 Honda Meeting Earth Dreams Technology showcase held in Japan. Honda also previewed its new direct-injection mills, in both 2.4 litre and 1.5 litre guise. The two Earth Dreams inline-four units wear fresh CVTs as well.

The 1.5 litre twin-cam DI unit, which offers 127 hp and 154 Nm, has both VTEC and VTC as well as auto stop-start in the inventory. The 11:0 compression NA unit features a new lightweight block construction, with active measures to reduce friction.

Key tech employed includes low-tension piston rings, a two-stage relief oil pump, high-tumble port, mass EGR and patterned piston coating. In terms of improvement, torque is up by 6%, and efficiency by 5% over a similar existing powertrain.

As for the CVT, the transmission wears a G-Design Shift badge, and for this one the company states that a new cooperative control achieves the joy of operating the car. Such imagery aside, the new 6.2 ratio unit is claimed to have a quicker response, better efficiency and wider range.

Reduced friction is on the cards, as well as the employment of a new CVT transmission fluid. Elsewhere, the design incorporates a new high-precision pulley pressure control, high-efficiency oil pump and a new high-strength belt.

The new power and drivetrain was on a Fit at Tochigi, and there was a chance to try it out on the high-speed banked oval the upper lane was closed off at the banked sections, but there was still ample acreage to stretch the cars legs as part of what the company tagged the Acceleration Fun part of the event.

Tuned towards offering economy without sacrificing drivability, the unit isnt a veritable powerhouse, but its energetic enough. Its also impressively smooth, especially the CVT. Theres none of the rubber-banding characteristics associated with the type, and what was coming off the unit was rather direct, almost auto transmission-like in feel.

The engine itself is quite willing, lively as it climbs up the rev range, and the smoothness carries through to higher band operation. A simple round across Tochigi wont reveal what its like in the real world, so things will have to wait until it presumably debuts on the new Fit to show what it can really achieve, especially with regards to fuel consumption.

The bigger displacement unit, the 2.4, has pretty much the same bag of tech tricks seen on the 1.5 DI, with the inclusion of a double-arm chain system into the list. Output torque has been increased by 10%, and efficiency is up by 4% over the current unit. As for power output, the new 2.4 DI offers 184 hp at 6,400 rpm (188 hp in Sport trim) and 243 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Aside from the two DI units, there were other engines on static display the new 1.6 litre Earth Dreams i-DTEC turbodiesel, which will make its market debut in the new Civic hatchback in Europe in January, as well as a research three-cylinder petrol turbo mill.

No details were available for the three-cylinder turbo, and none were again forthcoming from the Honda engineers despite some serious prodding, but the unit does look rather 1.0 EcoBoost-esque in intent and form. It does look like Honda is viewing the downsizing card and at alternatives quite intently might be that something like this would bridge the gap from its 1.5 DI to its 660 cc mills quite nicely.

Speaking of 660 cc mills, we had the chance to take out the recently-launched N-One kei car, in both normally-aspirated and turbo forms. The NA version offers 57 hp at 7,300 rpm and 65 Nm at 3,500 rpm, while the turbo delivers 63 hp at 6,000 rpm and 104 Nm at 2,600 rpm. The N-One only comes with a CVT, and from what was gathered at the event, that also wears a G-Design Shift badge.

The car looks cute, in a kitschy way I quite like the front end, actually. The interior is rather neat too, if spartan. The front bench looks novel and theres a decent number of cubbyholes for storage, and a push-button ignition and auto AC keeps it all tidy.

Around the track, belting it seemed a poor idea, especially with the NA, given that its really meant as a city car, but aside from a wooly steering at speed and some wind noise, the N-One gave a decent account of itself. Its behaviour is clean and the overall spirit is definitely perky. The turbo went around much easier, naturally, but performance isnt the be all and end all in Japan, its the cheaper NA that sells far better.

Such is the case too with the gangly N Box, which was at Tochigi in its turbocharged form, complete with Custom dress-up kit the engine is the same unit as that on the N-One, and has identical figures.

Like the N-One, the normally-aspirated N Box does much better than its turbo sibling in terms of sales, but Japanese consumers do opt to dress it up with the Custom kit its 50-50 basic and Custom as far as sales go, I was told.

Inspired by what the N-One achieved, I decided to let rip with the N Box, and at 130 km/h going into the middle lane of the bank, images of the vehicle tottering over flashed in my mind, but aside from a complete drop in steering weight, it chugged along happily.

As far as drive character goes, think of it as a bigger N-One. Its not the prettiest thing, the N Box, but it is eminently practical (plenty of space at the back with the rear seats folded down), and sales reflect its popularity in Japan.

Last, but not least, the facelifted CR-Z. The example at Tochigi was an auto mule, but the additional juice incorporated into the revision helps add zip you should temper your expectations, because its not jaw dropping, but theres a definite improvement, notably going into the midband.

I finally figured out how the S+ button operates. Press it, and you get all the available power the car can muster, but the battery has to be at least four bars full; any lower and the system is unavailable. When available, a S+ Ready indicator lights up on top of the battery meter display.

Operation is accelerator pedal dependent. The moment you ease off on it, the system disengages and goes back to normal output. Things are also good for a moderate time only, but its long enough for something like overtaking.

No word on when the car will arrive on our shores, but given that production of the pre-facelift model is all but over, you can work the math as to when itll tentatively arrive here. Oh, and apologies for not grabbing any pix of the CR-Zs interior there was simply too many things going on, and by the time I remembered we had left for the next section!

                              • Honda Still Expects 25% 2012 U.S. Sales Gain After Sandy

                                http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-1...ter-sandy.html

Honda Motor Co. (7267)s U.S. rebound will continue through 2012s final months, helping the carmaker boost deliveries about 25 percent this year even after Hurricane Sandy reduced October gains, said U.S. sales chief John Mendel.

The company expects to deliver almost 1.46 million Honda and Acura brand vehicles this year in the U.S., up from 1.15 million a year ago, Mendel said in an interview on Nov. 16. Hondas sales rose only 8.8 percent last month, compared with the 16 percent average gain of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Honda is the No. 2 Japanese automaker by U.S. sales.

November will be a pretty good month for us -- I see nothing different in November and December that will change the course of where weve been this year, Mendel said. Honda brand sales for the year should be within 10,000 or 12,000 units of 1.3 million, with the Acura luxury brand at 160,000, maybe a little bit more, he said.

Demand for the Tokyo-based carmakers cars and trucks in the U.S., its biggest market, has been aided by a redesign of the CR-V crossover, restyled Accord sedan and record production at North American plants that were slowed last year by parts shortages stemming from natural disasters in Asia. Honda is counting on a modified version of the Civic, currently the top- selling U.S. small car, that goes on sale late this month to keep growth going into 2013.

The companys shares slid 0.1 percent to 2,599 yen as of 9:52 a.m. in Tokyo trading today. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 0.2 percent.

Hondas sales grew 22 percent to 1.17 million through October. Besides the Civic increase, CR-V is the top-selling sport-utility vehicle so far this year, and Acura recorded a 28 percent sales gain in the first 10 months.

                                Sandy Recovery

Sandy, the largest Atlantic storm in U.S. history, hit the Northeast on Oct. 29, bringing floods and cutting power to millions of customers in New York and New Jersey. As many as 200,000 new and used vehicles may eventually be replaced in the region as a result of the storm, the National Automobile Dealers Association estimated this month.

Industrywide sales in October fell short of the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg after Sandy slammed the East Coast during the industrys busiest time of the month. Total U.S. light-vehicle deliveries rose 6.9 percent, below the 12 percent gain that was the average of nine estimates.

Carmarkers have said they expect to make up sales lost in October and replace thousands of new vehicles damaged by the storm.

New York metro area lost a bunch of cars, but weve reallocated a bunch that were in transit, Mendel said. Were doing everything we can to get those dealers up and running as quickly as possible, because its not just about the dealers, its customers. People there need cars.

Pickup-Truck Brands Join Honda Civic on Natural Gas Path

Since we're becoming awash in natural gas these days, it's too bad Americans can't use more of it to fuel our automobiles. But that situation is changing relatively quickly.

By year-end, reports Automotive News, a handful of heavy-duty pickup trucks will join the Honda Civic as the only compressed-natural-gas (CNG) vehicles being sold by U.S. dealers to retail buyers. The Ram 2500, Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and GMC Sierra 2500 each will be available with dual-mode engines that switch between natural gas and gasoline depending on conditions.

They're priced much higher than conventionally powered models, as you might expect. The Silverado CNG version will carry a sticker price of more than $43,000, or about $11,000 more than a base Silverado, Auto News reports.

Expect the move to CNG-powered vehicles to accelerate on a retail basis as the effects of the natural-gas glut continue to wash over energy markets and as American consumers continue to get more comfortable with the notion.

As of 2011, there were more than 123,000 CNG-powered heavy-duty trucks, vocational vehicles, buses and vans, cars and pick-up trucks in the U.S., according to David Demers, CEO for a natural-gas engine company who recently wrote for Forbes on CNGs. The vast majority of those are in business fleets where operators are looking for the massive cost savings that can be provided by CNG.

The big question now, of course, is whether the American auto and energy-distribution industries could accommodate a meaningful expansion of consumer interest in natural-gas vehicles. The manufacturing procedures are similar for CNG power and gasoline powerplants, and the infrastructure challenge is manageable.

"The time for natural-gas vehicles is now," wrote Demers, head of Canada's Westport Innovations, which is based in Vancouver, B.C. "The opportunities to source natural gas, buy vehicles, refuel and drive [natural-gas vehicles] are tremenous. They're here, and the demand is going to keep growing."

The demand may be growing, but will it really move the needle and become a differentiator for car-buyers?

Honda starts 2013 sports prototype program

The first 2013-spec Honda Performance Development, (HPD) ARX-03c LMP1 car incorporating larger front tires as well as other significant performance upgrades will test for the first time at the Motorland Aragon Circuit in Spain, November 18-20.

British team Strakka Racing will conduct this inaugural test. Strakka's ARX-03a, which achieved considerable success in this year's FIA World Endurance Championship, has been subjected to an exciting upgrade package taking it to '03c' (2013) specification. This upgrade includes wider Michelin front tires, plus new front-suspension geometry, steering configuration and bodywork.

As with its multiple race and championship-winning HPD ARX predecessors, the latest ARX-03c has been designed and developed with Wirth Research, taking full advantage of the company's renowned all-digital aerodynamic and chassis development processes. Power comes from HPD's efficient normally-aspirated 3.4-liter, V8 gasoline engine.

Strakka's regular drivers, Jonny Kane and Nick Leventis, as well as Klaus Graf who won the ALMS LMP1 crown in a Muscle Milk Pickett Racing-run HPD ARX-03a will be behind the wheel at the test. Graf will fill the seat vacated by Danny Watts, who will be away in Asia on Macau Grand Prix duties during the Aragon test.

The test will almost certainly be viewed with great interest by privateer teams currently competing at LMP1 level, as well as others looking to graduate to the premier class of sports prototype racing.
HPD Vice President Steve Eriksen commented: "In 2009, HPD showed the future direction of LMP1 car design by pioneering the use of large rear tires on all four wheels of its radical, championship-winning LMP1 Acura ARX-02a prototype.

"Since then, all rival LMP1 manufacturers have adopted this concept, and the 2013 HPD ARX-03c will feature this large front-tire format, along with a raft of aerodynamic and mechanical updates, boosting all-around performance."
Located in Santa Clarita, California, Honda Performance Development (HPD) is the Honda racing company within North America. In 2012, HPD teams and drivers swept both the LMP1 and LMP2 sports prototype championships in the American Le Mans Series, and won the FIA World Endurance Championship in LMP2 along with the LMP2 class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in partnership with Starworks Motorsport. In the IZOD IndyCar Series, Honda won this year's Indianapolis 500 with driver Dario Franchitti.

                                2013 Honda Accord sedan

                                http://www.directshift.com/wordpress...irect+Shift%29

Vehicle: 2013 Honda Accord Sport CVT sedan
                                Price as tested: CDN$27130
Performance: Earth Dreams marks Hondas first foray into direct injected technology, Accord is their first testament. While the V6 still unavailable with directly fuel injection, Hondas always sweet-as-a-nut DOHC i-VTEC 2.4 liter 4-cylinder has received this very technology which combines the best of fuel economy without losing anything, when it comes to performance. When it comes to develop 4-cylinder engine, no one else does better than Honda. With this engine series, one can beat Honda has solved direct fuel injections age old problem: carbonize. On the other hand, its capable of delivering up to 189hp and 182lb/ft of torque for our Sport trim. Those who prefer a more understated looks would get 4 less hp and 1 less lb/ft of torque. In terms of seat-of-the-pants feedback, there arent any dramatic difference between those few ponies. The similarities are their wonderful refinement, flexability and NVH one expects from Hondas normally aspirated engines. Press the light throttle, Accord takes off like a rabbit. Along with new directly injected motor, Hondas Earth Dreams delivers with a new series of CVT, which doesnt feel like a CVT. There arent any motorboating effect while delivering the sort of efficiency and economy from a CVT. Those genius engineers have engineered a CVT which feel like a traditional auto gearbox without losing the utmost efficiency of a proper CVT. In fact, the combination is so good that we had an average of 7 liters per 100km for such a heavy 1527kg family sedan. Because of such fuel economy, the green Econ button comes standard with every Honda doesnt seem to improve the already impressive fuel economy much despite of what they claimed. Its redundant given the system has to blunt the throttle response and gearchange pattern to yield a marginally better fuel consumption.
Handling: Hondas dynamic DNA shines through the new Accord. Along comes a top-notch platform, which doesnt feel any chassis flex when press. Its both rigid and stiff enough for the new front MacPherson struct to hang its hats. While there are those who lamented the lost of Hondas legendary Double Wishbone front suspension, the transformation to MacPherson struct havent detected anything when it comes to handling. Accords dynamic qualities remain very impressed when pushed through its paces. Its suspension calibration is such that, its both comfortably compliant and supple. Its able to absorb both washboard pavement, patholes and expansion joints extremely well. On the other hand, electro-mechanical steering provides feel and feedback we usually find in a sports sedan. It responds to driver input accordingly, which deliver sure-footness and precision, one expects from Honda. Driving a family sedan used to meant settle for a boring drive, not so with an Accord. The Accord delivers both driving fun of a sports sedan, with the amount of supreme comfort of a family sedan. Body motions have been nicely controlled while terminal understeer is expected. Even if you expect from ugliness when press too hard, Accords state-of-the-art ESC wont let it rears its ugly heads easily. Its both an enjoyable and comfortable package that only Honda able to execute so elegantly.
Brakes: Our Sport comes standard with 4-wheel discs and standard ABS. The ABS only steps in necessarily while brake provides exceptional pedal feel. The pedal always feels solid and reassurring while fade-free, after couple of harsh stops.
Interior: Previous Accords busy dashboard has been cleaned up nicely. There are right amount of buttons for the auto climate control and stereo. Given Accords size, its back-up camera is a godsent. Our Sports velour seats are well-foamed yet comfortable, if the pattern design feels somewhat weird for Accords caliber. There are right amount of soft-touch plastic around the dashboard and door panels. Unlike many lesser design, Accords infotainment center wont washed away during sunlight. Its also remarkably easy to use without faddling around the owners manual. In typical Japanese electronic tradition, everything is easy to use and initutive. Its Bluetooth capability simply one of the easies to pair anywhere in the business. Because its a Honda, all the switchgears are of top shelf quality with tactile feedback. You feel like in a luxury car twice of its price but without those annoying quirks. Thats the beauty of Hondas elegance in engineering philosophy.
At the back of the Accord, its as spacious as usual with plenty of head and legroom for outboard passengers.
The Accords trunk has been very well-designed. Low liftover with minimal side sills and fold-down rear seats deliver maximum luggage space. If there is any pet peeve, its the instrusive hinges cut into anything groceries underneath.
Conclusion: Without a doubt, this 9th generation is the best Accord yet. Not only does it have a pretty sharp looks. The impressive use of Earth Dreams technology combines the best of performance/economy, it handles relatively well with top ride quality. The refreshing interior has cleaned up nicely with some of the most user-friendly features in the business. The Accord has been the absolute homerun that Honda desperately needs for such a long time.
                                Welcome back, Honda.
                                Competitions:
                                Ford Fusion
                                Hyundai Sonata
                                Kia Optima
                                Nissan Altima
                                Toyota Camry
                                VW Passat

Honda to Benefit from Hyundai, Kia Debacle

Japan's Honda may benefit the most from a false advertising scandal surrounding Hyundai Motor and affiliate Kia Motors, the American magazine Consumer Reports said on Monday.

Honda had been the U.S.' No. 1 brand in terms of fuel efficiency for 33 years before it was replaced by the Korean automakers. Toyota, Nissan and Ford were also expected to benefit in the compact and midsize car market.

In an interview with Bloomberg News on Sunday, Jake Fisher of Consumer Reports said this is a perfect opportunity for Honda to pay back its rivals, since it had been "seen as falling behind in fuel efficiency, not keeping up with Hyundai and others."

Honda's flagship compact Civic has a rating of 28 mpg (11.9 km/L) in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway, lagging behind the Hyundai Elantra's (or Avante here) 29 city and 40 highway mpg rating.

But after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revised fuel-economy ratings, the Elantra's mpg rating is 28 mpg and 38 mpg and the Civic reclaimed its No. 1 spot in fuel efficiency in its class.

Since the recent release of the new Accord midsize sedan in the U.S., Honda has been competing fiercely with the Hyundai Sonata. U.S. consumer research firm Strategic Vision forecast that sales of the Korean automakers in the U.S. may drop 11 percent for the next several months.
