Honda (UK) Boosts Its Corporate Sales Team

SLOUGH, UNITED KINGDOM – Sept 17, 2012: Honda (UK) has boosted its Corporate Sales team with two new appointments. Lee Wheeler has been appointed Manager - Corporate Operations (for the interim) to head up the team and Jon Jacks has been promoted to the position of National Leasing & SMR Manager. Both positions are effective immediately.

These new additions strengthen the team as it prepares to introduce the new class-leading low CO2, high-powered 1.6 i-DTEC engine in the new Civic.

Lee has over seven years of Honda experience since joining Honda Finance in May 2004 where he spent the first two years in Central Europe setting up Honda Finance in Austria, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. He then joined Honda (UK) as National Leasing & SMR Manager in August 2007 before being appointed Manager - Sales Support and Logistics two years later. Until recently Lee has been responsible for Commercial & Business Planning.

"I’m delighted to be back within the Corporate team, especially now at a time when we have some fantastic products coming through,” commented Lee. “It really is an exciting time for Honda in the corporate market particularly with the introduction of Honda’s new 1.6 i-DTEC ‘no compromise’ diesel engine in the new Civic. This engine is perfect for company car drivers as it offers a class-leading mix of low CO2 emissions of only 94 g/km without sacrificing on power and driving experience.

“Honda's renowned for reliability, strong residual values and low whole life costs and this makes for an excellent platform to launch our small diesel engine in the Civic.”

Jon Jacks joins the team as National Leasing & SMR Manager after spending the last two years as Dealer Corporate Manager for the Midlands region. Jon has over 25 years experience in the motor and motor finance industry.

Jon will be responsible for growing Honda`s share and volume in the vitally important Contract Hire and Leasing market and dealing with Board level personnel within the largest Leasing Companies in Britain.

Jon will also be overseeing all Honda Contract Hire programmes, online SMR and all product launch activity to the Whole Life Cost providers to maximise competitiveness of Honda’s product positioning through optimum residual values, SMR and monthly rentals.

“This is an exciting time for Honda Corporate as we launch the 1.6 i-DTEC Civic and CR-V models,” commented Jon. “The Civic 1.6 i-DTEC firmly puts Honda at the forefront in the competitive corporate market. This is a hugely diverse and important role for Honda and I am looking forward to this new challenge.”

Japanese Automakers Urge Government to Implement Measures to Counter Strong Yen

Last Thursday, the yen hit a seven-month high against the U.S. dollar. That wouldn’t be so bad if the country’s currency hadn’t strengthened so much, from under 120 yen per dollar five years ago to less than 78 at the end of last week.As a result, exports have become more expensive, thus limiting profits. Japanese automakers have felt the strain for quite some time now. Add last year’s tsunami that seriously disrupted production and the high labor cost and corporate taxes and it is not difficult to see why the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) decided to act.
According to Reuters, JAMA has asked both the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan, the country’s central bank, to implement measures that will counter the strong yen as soon as possible.
“The current foreign exchange level, which is far from the actual ability of the Japanese economy, goes much beyond the limits of what companies can do through efforts to cut costs”, said Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s president who also heads JAMA.
Toyota spokesperson Joichi Tachikawa said the company may raise its vehicles’ prices. “As part of making the business profitable again, our options include price hikes for cars we export from Japan”, he said, though he didn’t elaborate on the details of the possible price increases.
Japan’s biggest car manufacturer has recovered from last year’s crisis and was the world’s best-selling automaker in the first half of 2012. It remains committed to building at least 3 million vehicles annually in Japan, yet at the same time, it is also shifting production of the North American-market Yaris to its Valenciennes plant in France and the Lexus RX SUV to Canada.
Other Japanese car companies are adopting the same practice as a means to reduce their costs. Nissan, for example, will build the Rogue compact crossover, and probably the Murano SUV, at its Tennessee plant in the U.S. from the 2014 model year and Honda announced last year that it would reduce production at its Japanese plants by 50 percent over the next decade.

Anti-Japan protests in China cause Honda, Mazda, Nissan to suspend production

Reuters is reporting That Honda, Mazda and Nissan have been forced to stop production in China after a series of anti-Japan protests erupted over a territorial dispute between the two countries. The stoppage will see a total of four Honda plants go dark for two days, thanks in part to the fact that local dealers have been under attack and can't receive shipments. Mazda, meanwhile, plans to close its facility in Nanjing for a total of four days, starting on Tuesday. The report sites Luo Lei, the deputy secretary general of the China Automobile Dealers Association, as saying many dealerships have shut down after a few were vandalized. One dealership saw a Honda Civic set on fire in Shanghai.

Lei also said buyers are boycotting Japanese goods, especially cars, over safety concerns.

Honda and Mazda aren't alone, either. Toyota and Panasonic both reported fire damage at their facilities, and one Toyota dealership was set ablaze as well. Protesters overturned cars and smashed windshields in some cities as well, as the September 18 anniversary of the Manchurian Incident approaches. The date marks the anniversary of Japan's invasion into northeastern China in 1931.

Japan's Honda, Nissan and Toyota scale back China production

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan's big three automakers shuttered some or all of their factory operations in China on Tuesday amid escalating anti-Japan protests centred on a bitter territorial dispute between the Asian giants.

Honda Motor said it had temporarily closed all five of its China plants after violent demonstrations, while Nissan temporarily shut two of three factories and Toyota said it had scaled back production but did not elaborate.

"We decided to stop production at our automobile factories for today and tomorrow (Wednesday)," a Honda spokesman told AFP, adding that no decision had been made about plant restarts later in the week.

"We can produce cars in the factories, but we are concerned about delivery to the dealers," he added.

Honda puts flood back-up plan in place

Honda Automobile (Thailand) has drawn up an emergency back-up plan in the event of possible flooding, including the preparation of a vehicle inventory area and the moving of machinery and staff to another location.
The company is working closely with Rojana Industrial Park in Ayutthaya, where its car-assembly plant is located, to monitor the situation, executive vice president Pitak Pruittisarikorn said yesterday.

The park has almost completed construction of a concrete dyke around the estate. The wall is 6.05 metres above median sea level and the construction meets the standards of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, he said.

The company also has confidence in the government's water-management plan, he added.

Meanwhile, the company yesterday launched the all-new Honda CR-V sport-utility vehicle. The SUV is the ninth new model that Honda has launched into the Thai market since the reopening of its Ayutthaya plant in April.

Honda targets 20,000 sales of the new CR-V in the first year and has already sent 300 units to dealers.

      Industrial estates on alert

All seven major industrial parks affected by last year's flooding have made preparations to deal with a possible repeat this year.

They have been closely monitoring the situation with their client factories and state agencies to brace for any flood-water problems.

Nava Nakorn Industrial Estate in Pathum Thani has finished 98 per cent of the construction of a dyke 5.5 metres above median sea level. It has also installed pumps with a combined capacity of 800,000 cubic metres of water per day, up from the daily maximum of 500,000 cubic metres last year.

Rojana Industrial Park's construction of its dyke is now 99 per cent complete, and the park is working with Team Consulting Engineering and Management to monitor the situation closely.

Bang Pa-in Industrial Park in Ayutthaya has finished construction of an earth wall that is 4.4 metres above sea level, while Saha Rattana Nakorn Industrial Estate, also in Ayutthaya, is raising the height of a 6.6-kilometre-long temporary dyke, bringing it to 7.5 metres above sea level. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Ayutthaya's Hi-Tech Industrial Estate said its permanent dyke was 5.4 metres above sea level. The estate remains alert in case an emergency arises.

In a related matter, Kasikorn Securities reiterated in its latest research that applications for tax privileges from the Board of Investment in July were lower than in the previous month as a result of operators' concerns over flooding.

"We still see flooding as a downside risk to Thai industrial estates," said the brokerage, citing a significant drop in applications from Japanese companies for BOI tax privileges, at just Bt2 billion in July from Bt8.5 billion in June.

Meanwhile, there was good demand for privileges in industrial estates in the East, the research added.

However, the brokerage said it was still optimistic about the overall prospects for Thai industrial-estate operators, with a solid number of applications in July totalling Bt95.7 billion of privileges, up 82.6 per cent year on year.

Kasikorn Securities has maintained its "overweight" recommendation on industrial-estate stocks, citing Amata as its top pick. It maintains its target for Amata's sales bookings this year at 1,800 rai (288 hectares) of saleable land, far below the developer's target of 3,000 rai.

The brokerage has also picked two more industrial-estate stocks, Hemraj and Ticon. The former company has booked 1,447 rai of sales, accounting for 63 per cent of its full-year target, while the latter is expected to book sales of Bt3.9 billion this year.

      2012 Honda Pilot Touring Review

Although recent Honda products may not look very exciting or competitive, they have an uncanny way of impressing us by delivering the goods without fuss. You can criticize the new Civic all you want about its bland styling and hit-and-miss interior, but it remains a solid, easy-to-live-with car that delivers solid fuel economy and reliability.

Same thing goes for the Honda Pilot. It’s got rugged looks, but doesn’t stand out from the crowd of midsize SUVs. It doesn’t have the most powerful engine in its class, yet offers plenty of pep and decent fuel consumption. And it’s got room for eight passengers -- eight normal-size passengers.

      Efficient powertrain
The 2012 Honda Pilot features the company’s well known 3.5L V6. In this application, it develops 250 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, it includes cylinder deactivation for saving fuel under light loads, and is managed by a 5-speed automatic.

On paper, it seems low on power compared to a 270-hp Toyota Highlander or a 280-hp Volkswagen Touareg. However, the Honda Pilot’s V6 and gearbox make the best out of the situation, as the big SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds.

It was also pretty quiet on the highway. A 6th gear would probably help fuel economy; at 100 km/h, the engine spun at 2,000 rpm, a little higher than expected. Still, the Pilot delivered an acceptable average of 11.8L/100km over the course of the week.

That included a weekend trip up in the woods with five people and gear on board. Driving down gravel roads was obviously not a problem for the high-riding 2012 Honda Pilot, and road noise was well isolated. More communicative steering would help to feel the road better -- although, that's more of a concern in the winter than in the summer.

The all-wheel drive system in the 2012 Honda Pilot is front-wheel biased; when a loss of traction is detected, engine power is sent to the back wheels. It’s a reactive system, maybe not one of the best out there for battling a snowstorm, but the VTM-4 can be locked in four-wheel drive mode at the touch of a button for added confidence behind the wheel. On the other hand, you can only lock it while travelling under approximately 30 km/h.

      Room for eight
The 2012 Honda Pilot is one of the rare SUVs in the midsize class that can accommodate up to eight passengers -- make that eight adult passengers. The square shape of the truck means there isn’t a sloping rear roofline to cut down third-row headroom, and foot space back there is adequate.

As usual in three-row SUVs and crossovers, you either haul people or cargo, but can rarely carry both. In the Pilot’s case, you do get 589 litres of cargo space when all seats are occupied, which isn’t bad at all. Fold down both rows in the 2012 Honda Pilot and you get 2,464 litres of cargo volume; that’s average in the category, and much less than in GM’s immense Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave triplets.

The 2012 Pilot’s pilot gets a commanding view of the road ahead, with good all-around visibility and a good driving position. The Pilot is also a shopping mall parking-lot champ, with an excellent turning radius. As mentioned earlier, this Honda is extremely easy to live with, and behind the wheel it feels smaller than it really is.

      Interior improvements
This year, the Honda Pilot received a minor facelift as well as some changes to the interior assembly. The centre stack was revised; gone is the translucent faceplate, while the button layout has been shuffled around a bit. These aren’t big changes, but stylistically it looks better even though it lacks the quality feel of a Volkswagen’s cockpit.

The last Honda Pilot I drove had dash panels that didn’t quite line up properly, but such was not the case in this 2012 version. The navigation and infotainment system’s screen was updated with cleaner, sharper graphics, and remains easy to use. The Touring trim we tested also included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones and extra output jacks which worked flawlessly while front-row occupants listened to music.

      No-hassle trims and pricing
The 2012 Honda Pilot LX 2WD form starts at $34,920, while our top-shelf Touring version is listed at $48,520. Between those two extremes are four other trim levels with incrementally more equipment.

The domestic brands such as the aforementioned GMs, the Dodge Durango and the Ford Explorer offer more selection in trims, equipment and powertrains. They also have electronic safety gizmos the Pilot lacks, like blind-spot monitors and adaptive cruise control. Nevertheless, the Pilot is well equipped and its simplified model lineup makes the purchase process easy.

It may lack excitement, but the 2012 Honda Pilot is a solid SUV buy that simply makes the everyday grind much easier to handle.

Japanese Automakers Bracing for Bashing in China Protests

Two years ago, Sherry Wang bought a Toyota Camry because it offered a comfortable way to commute to her job as a researcher in the Chinese city of Xi’an. Lately, she’s been taking the bus.

“I’m afraid that my car or I will become a target” of anti-Japanese protestors, who have thronged China’s streets in recent days, Wang said. “I just hope life will get back to normal as quickly as possible.”

Wang illustrates why Japanese carmakers such as Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), Nissan Motor Co., and Honda Motor Co. are bracing for what may become a bigger crisis in China than last year’s tsunami in Japan. As violent protests over control of islands claimed by both nations flare up, China’s Passenger Car Association predicts Japanese brands will lose their lead over German nameplates in the country for the first time since 2005.

“The repercussions for Japanese carmakers are very serious and will last for a long time,” said Cui Dongshu, deputy secretary general of the Passenger Car Association. “There are plenty of choices. Why bother with Japanese brands if there are concerns of safety due to anti-Japan sentiment?”

Consumers shunning Japanese models may turn to market leaders General Motors Co. (GM), which this year has sold 1.84 million cars in China under brands including Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac, and Volkswagen AG (VOW), whose two joint ventures have sold a total of 1.49 million vehicles this year. The Japanese leader, Nissan, has sold some 485,000 vehicles in China so far this year.

      Dealerships Attacked

Nissan led shares of Japanese automakers lower in Tokyo trading yesterday as protests turned violent in some Chinese cities. Japan’s three biggest carmakers -- Toyota, Nissan and Honda -- have reported attacks on their dealerships in the eastern port city of Qingdao and halted production at Chinese plants. Suzuki Motor Corp. (7269) suspended operations at its motorcycle factory.

Officials at Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (7211) and Mazda Motor Corp. (7261) said they’re assessing the situation in China.

While automakers have been among the hardest hit Japanese companies, the diplomatic crisis puts at risk bilateral trade in goods ranging from rice to tractors that has tripled in the past decade to more than $340 billion. The tensions also further complicate policymakers’ efforts to fortify growth in Asia’s biggest economies as the European debt crisis saps demand for exports.

The protests center around a decades-long dispute over a group of islands, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara reignited the row in April when he said he may use public funds to buy the islands. Protests in China have since escalated, with some demonstrators torching auto showrooms and smashing Japanese-branded vehicles.
      Manchurian Incident

Thousands of protestors marched in Chinese cities yesterday on the 81st anniversary of the Manchurian Incident, an attack on a Japanese railway that historians say was used as an excuse for Japanese soldiers to invade China. Demonstrators in Shanghai gathered at the Japanese consulate chanting “Down with the Japan devils, give back Diaoyu.”

Many dealerships in China that sell Japanese cars have closed after some showrooms were attacked and vandalized, according to Luo Lei, deputy secretary general of the state- backed China Automobile Dealers Association. The sales declines will likely hurt the Japanese manufacturers more than last year’s earthquake and tsunami, which closed factories across Japan, Luo said.

“The impact caused by natural disasters can be fixed quickly, while it takes a longer time and more effort to make hostile sentiment against Japanese cars go away,” Luo said in a Sept. 17 interview.
      ‘So Hostile’

Unverified photos posted on online forums this week showed Toyotas with their badges covered by logos of Chinese brands such as BYD Co. (1211) And Japanese car dealerships have hung Chinese flags and banners proclaiming patriotism for China.

“Everyone’s attitude toward Japan is so hostile now,” said Zhang Jian, a salesman in Chengdu at a Mitsubishi dealership that sported a Chinese flag in its windows and signs vowing support for China’s claim to the islands. “Although we are selling a product from a Japan-China joint venture brand, it has nothing to do with how we feel about the Diaoyu islands. We are Chinese and support China’s claim.”

Walk-in customers dropped by half over the weekend at the dealership and sales will be hurt should the tensions persist, Zhang said.

At a nearby Nissan distributor, sales manager Julien Chen said police stepped up patrols after attackers damaged showrooms in Qingdao. The Nissan (7201) dealership and a Toyota showroom nearby shut operations Sept. 16 as a precaution, Chen said.
      Market Share

The collective market share of Japanese car brands, No. 1 among foreign nameplates in China since 2005, will probably fall to 22 percent this year, while German marques could increase their share to 22.5 percent, according to projections by China’s Passenger Car Association.

The slide may have already begun as sales of Japanese- branded cars fell last month in China, compared with gains of more than 10 percent for German, American and South Korean vehicles, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Shun Maruyama, chief Japan equity strategist at BNP Paribas SA, said transportation is the Japanese industry most reliant on China. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. estimates China accounts for 30 percent of profit at Nissan, 17 percent at Toyota and 15 percent at Honda.
      ‘Serious Conflict’

Some analysts said concerns may be overblown.

“Since neither Japan nor China are really interested in a serious conflict that would harm both economies, I expect a solution to be found soon,” said Klaus Paur, Shanghai-based global head of automotive at researcher Ipsos. “With an appropriate marketing and communication offensive, Japanese carmakers may then quickly try to regain some lost ground.”

In the short term, anti-Japan sentiment will hamper expansion plans by Japanese carmakers, with September sales probably hitting the low point for the year, Paur said.

Nissan has the biggest plans in the country, with its China venture budgeting 50 billion yuan ($7.8 billion) in investments to raise sales to more than 2.3 million vehicles in China by 2015 from 1.3 million in 2010. Toyota said this month it aims to increase Chinese deliveries to 1.8 million vehicles by 2015, more than double the tally last year, by adding at least 20 new models. Honda said in April it plans to double deliveries in the country over four years after being “too cautious” in its expansion.

While the tensions will almost certainly hurt sales in the short term, over time Japanese cars will likely find buyers, said Zhou Jincheng, an analyst at researcher Fourin Inc.

“Chinese consumers understand that Japanese products are good quality,” Zhou said. “So Japanese carmakers shouldn’t have to worry about the products themselves, but they may need to review their business plans in the country with regard to the nation’s political situation.”

2013 Insight Remains America’s Most Affordable Hybrid
After wholesale changes for the 2012 model year that helped it earn a Total Cost of Ownership Award from Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, the Honda Insight will keep calm and carry on unchanged for the new model year—and will be priced accordingly: That means the 2013 Insight will wear the same highly affordable MSRP as last year, too, and start at a mere $18,500.

Yet even though the Insight is (still) the most affordable hybrid in America, owners would be hard-pressed to tell that from the car’s wealth of benefits. Naturally, it all starts with EPA ratings of 41 mpg city/44 mpg highway/42 mpg combined, which allowed the Insight to become one of four Honda models on the “Greenest Vehicles of 2012” list from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. (The others were the Honda Civic Natural Gas, Honda Civic Hybrid and Honda CR-Z sport hybrid.)

Those results come courtesy of the Insight’s Honda Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) powertrain, where a 1.3-liter I4 engine meets a 10-kW electric motor to deliver a peppy 98 hp and 123 lb.-ft. of nearly instant torque.

The standard Insight package further includes a 160-watt audio system, automatic climate control, power windows/locks, a continuously variable transmission (CVT), 60/40 split rear seats, 31.5 cubic feet of cargo space, and more. As for available content, the list includes:

        Bluetooth technology
        A leather-wrapped steering wheel
        Cruise control
        Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls
A sport transmission with paddle shifters and seven fixed gear ratios
        Alloy wheels
Heated outside mirrors (with integrated turn signals)
        Automatic headlights
        A rearview camera
Honda’s Satellite-Linked Navigation System (with voice recognition)

The 2013 Honda Insight also is a Top Safety Pick of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

        Honda revamps its bestselling Accord

Goleta, California—Ever since it hit the North American market in 1976, the Honda Accord has been a game-changer. It was the first compact sedan to sell in decent numbers, and it spawned a generation of similarly conceived models, such as the Toyota Camry, the Mazda 626, and the Nissan Stanza. Right from the beginning, it was a bestseller for Honda and it’s been at or near the top of the pack for at least the past three decades. (Has anyone not owned an Accord?) When rival manufacturers introduce a new compact—or, these days, a midsize sedan—the Accord is usually cited as the one to beat and the benchmark for this market.

But the past few years have been comparatively lacklustre for Honda’s flagship. It’s still a decent seller and a good choice, certainly, but equally competent models from Korean rivals Hyundai and Kia have taken the edge off things, and more recently last year’s catastrophic tsunami hit the company hard in terms of suppliers and logistics.

Time for a change. But any alterations to this mainstream sedan have to be of a cautious nature. This is not the time for a drastic restyling treatment or all-new drive trains. Nothing stays still in the car industry, but the Accord has always been about evolution, not revolution.

“The Accord is one of Honda’s ‘pillar’ models,” explained Dave Gardner, Honda Canada’s vice-president of sales and marketing, at the launch of the 2013 Accord in California. “It’s one of the most important models in our lineup, and this is not so much about just increasing sales—although that would be nice—but about raising the bar.”

Apparently the culmination of three years’ worth of research and development, the new Accord will have two engine choices: a 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 3.5-litre V-6. Power outputs are 185 horsepower and 278 horsepower, respectively, which is up slightly over the 2012 model. Nothing surprising there. Except, perhaps, the name of these engines. Honda is describing them as employing “Earth Dreams” power train technology…whatever that is.

But the big news is that the Accord will now come with an optional CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic, as well as a manual six-speed and traditional planetary six-speed automatic.

Why the belt-driven CVT? According to chief engineer Shoji Matsui, it’s all about fuel economy. Nissan’s Altima sedan, for example, is easier on gas than the current Accord, and it’s had a CVT for at least a couple of years now. Says Matsui: “We’ve been doing extensive testing to find out why the Altima has better fuel economy, and we think a CVT is part of the solution.” So, like it or not, CVTs are here to stay, and we’ll likely be seeing more of them from other manufacturers.

Elsewhere, the new Accord will feature a slightly larger trunk—some 50 litres of additional capacity—while being about 90 millimetres shorter. Changes to the body style are subtle, and if anything this edition looks even more conservative than the 2012 version. Two configurations will be offered: a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe, with various trim levels for each model.

One of the biggest bugaboos afflicting the current generation of Accord—and some other Honda products too—is excessive noise emanating up through the floorboards and wheel wells. On the highway, in particular, the Accord is a loud automobile compared to many of its competitors. Honda has been taken to task about this more than once. For 2013, the Accord will apparently have better soundproofing than before, with a more rigid body structure and insulation in the roof, floor, and door panels. It will also have a cool little goodie in the form of a noise-cancelling audio feature. In a nutshell, microphones located in the roof liner will pick up excessive ambient noise and send a signal to a processor, which will in turn relay a “reverse phase” signal to an amplifier, which will “tell” the door speakers to cancel out the original noise. This feature will be in play whether the radio is off or on. Slick.

To attract younger buyers, the new Accord will be chock-a-block with electronic extras. Apparently, just driving a car isn’t enough these days; buyers will be able to choose from things like Slacker personal radio, iPhone and Android adaptability, texting presets, and app downloading capability. These are all accessed via Honda’s HondaLink program.

But that’s not all. A plug-in hybrid version of the Accord is just around the corner, and it’ll be a “full” hybrid, meaning it can run on pure electric battery power…for up to 28 kilometres. This model—the PHEV—is expected by summer of next year. It will provide an overall driving range of some 800 kilometres, with one of the highest fuel-economy ratings in the midsize segment, according to Honda.

Honda hasn’t released a pricing structure for the new Accord, but it’s bound to be similar to that of the current version, which ranges from the mid $20,000s to the mid $30,000s.

Japanese Automakers Shut Down their Chinese Plants as Protests Get More Violent [w/Video]

The Anti-Japan protests that have been raging in China for months due to a territorial dispute over some uninhabited islands reached critical mass today, September 18, a date which coincides with the 1931 Japanese invasion of mainland China.

In its latest report, Reuters says that riots in China have reignited by the anniversary and the locals’ anti-Japan feelings are stronger than ever. Protesters have gathered outside the Japanese embassy in Beijing and made their intentions clear, chanting Anti-Japan slogans and holding banners that read things like “Wipe out all Japanese dogs”.

Protesters have also targeted Japanese corporations, in some cases attacking some of their outlets. This has forced most companies, such as Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Panasonic to halt some of their local operations while others have reportedly recalled their workers back to Japan.

"The situation on the ground in China is not so good and I was advised by the locals not to go out. I couldn't get any work done", Hisato Takase, a Japanese worker who returned to Tokyo from China, told Reuters/ Even Japanese restaurants have closed since they have been targeted by rioters.

Officially, the Chinese government hopes for a peaceful solution to this crisis. "We still hope for a peaceful and negotiated solution to this issue and we hope to work together and work well with the Japanese government", said Defense Minister Liang Guanglie after a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta who is currently visiting China.

China and Japan, the world’s second and third largest economies respectively, have a two-way total trade of around US$345 billion. Halting production has resulted in falling stock prices of those Japanese companies that operate in China.

The U.S., a strong ally of Japan is, at the time, remaining neutral in this feud.

Toyota, Nissan and Honda brace for violent protests over control of islands claimed by Japan, China

Two years ago, Sherry Wang bought a Toyota Camry because it offered a comfortable way to commute to her job as a researcher in the Chinese city of Xi'an. Lately, she's been taking the bus.

"I'm afraid that my car or I will become a target" of anti-Japanese protesters, who have thronged China's streets in recent days, Wang said. "I just hope life will get back to normal as quickly as possible."

Wang illustrates why Toyota, Nissan and Honda are bracing for what may become a bigger crisis in China than last year's tsunami in Japan. As violent protests over control of islands claimed by both nations flare up, China's Passenger Car Association predicts Japanese brands will lose their lead over German nameplates in the country for the first time since 2005.

"The repercussions for Japanese carmakers are very serious and will last for a long time," said Cui Dongshu, deputy secretary general of the Passenger Car Association. "There are plenty of choices. Why bother with Japanese brands if there are concerns of safety due to anti-Japan sentiment?"

Consumers shunning Japanese models may turn to market leaders General Motors, which this year has sold 1.84 million cars in China under brands including Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac, and Volkswagen, whose two joint ventures have sold a total of 1.49 million vehicles this year. The Japanese leader, Nissan, has sold some 485,000 vehicles in China so far this year.

Toyota, Nissan and Honda have reported attacks on their dealerships in the eastern port city of Qingdao and halted production at Chinese plants. Suzuki suspended operations at its motorcycle factory.

Officials at Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi and Mazda said they're assessing the situation in China.

While automakers have been among the hardest-hit Japanese companies, the diplomatic crisis puts at risk bilateral trade in goods ranging from rice to tractors that has tripled in the past decade to more than $340 billion.

The tensions also further complicate policymakers' efforts to fortify growth in Asia's biggest economies as the European debt crisis saps demand for exports.

The protests center on a decades-long dispute over a group of islands, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara reignited the row in April when he said he may use public funds to buy the islands. Protests in China have since escalated, with some demonstrators torching auto showrooms and smashing Japanese-branded vehicles.

Thousands of protesters marched in Chinese cities Tuesday on the 81st anniversary of the Manchurian Incident, an attack on a Japanese railway that historians say was used as an excuse for Japanese soldiers to invade China.

Consumers Pick Odyssey, Pilot as Family-Friendly Choices

While the automotive experts at Edmunds.com are well known for their in-depth reviews of the latest vehicles, the website also makes a point of showcasing input from the folks who live with today’s cars and trucks on a daily basis. That includes those living with the Honda Pilot and Honda Odyssey, which were recently voted as top picks on Edmunds’ “Consumers’ Favorites: Best Family Car” list.

The Pilot—significantly refreshed for 2012—was lauded for its “strong fuel economy and roomy accommodations,” including an EPA line of 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway/21 mpg combined and the ability to swallow up to 87 cubic feet of cargo. It’s also worth noting that Honda has continued to upgrade the Pilot for the 2013 model year by adding Bluetooth technology for both hands-free calling and audio streaming, a rearview camera system, and an intelligent Multi Information Display (i-MID) with eight-inch screen.

In adding the Odyssey to the Best Family Car rankings, Edmunds consumers called out its “highly versatile interior, long list of features and responsive handling,” as well as its best-in-class fuel-efficiency marks of up to 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. Also notable: The Odyssey provides best-in-class safety marks as the only currently tested minivan to earn both Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a 5-star overall vehicle score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

And owners also named both the Pilot and the Odyssey as their segment leaders in the 2012 Autobytel/AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards.

What Kind of Drivers is Honda Targeting with its New "We Know You" 2013 Accord Ads?

In life, there are always two ways to see things: the glass can be half-full or half-empty. This may also be the case for some of the new TV spots Honda has prepared for its 2013 Accord, which goes on sale in the United States today, September 19. The multimedia campaign is named "It Starts with You" and it puts a lot of focus on new technologies that help drivers avoid certain situations that could place them in danger, including the LaneWatch blind-spot display and forward collision warning systems.
While some could agree with Honda that it is portraying real-life scenarios and people, others may claim that the Japanese automaker is targeting careless if not mindless, drivers who rely purely on electronics to dodge an accident – though to be fair, Honda isn’t the first carmaker to base a campaign around these "smart" systems.
Head over the jump to watch the 2013 Accord sedan commercials and then share your thoughts in the comments.

Honda aims to nearly double car sales in four years

Aims to sell 6 million cars globally in 2016/17

              * Fit and Brio models at core of product lineup

              * China plants resume production, but not operating fully

              * Honda readies for possible delays by China customs

TOKYO, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co aims to nearly double its global car sales to at least 6 million vehicles in four years, its chief executive officer said on Friday as the Japanese automaker tries to expand in emerging markets.

The Fit, or Jazz, subcompact car and its series, as well as the small car Brio will be at the core of the company's product lineup so that Honda can reach its sales target in the year ending March 2017, CEO Takanobu Ito said.

"This is quite a big figure for us and there were debates over whether we should make it public, but unless we set a goal and work to figure out how we can achieve it, our business operations won't be specific," he told a news conference.

"Our car business depends on the Fit series and I am confident that this is definitely a core product in any region in the world."

Honda aims to sell 3 million cars in Japan, the United States, Europe and other developed markets combined, up from about 2 million it sold in the year ended March, and double sales to 3 million cars in emerging markets including India and China.

The Fit series will start to go on sale in Japan in 2013 and then globally in the following two years. The B rio was introduced in Thailand and India last year.

The company will also aim to sell 25 million or more motorcycles globally in the year ending March 2017, the 59-year-old CEO said.

Earlier this week, Honda suspended operations at five car plants in China after violent anti-Japan protests erupted in the world's biggest auto market, with some protesters destroying Japanese cars and setting fire to dealerships.

All five Honda factories in China have resumed operations, but are not operating at full capacity as parts suppliers have also been impacted by the protests, Ito said.

Following the rise in tensions, a delay in Chinese customs procedures is possible and Honda is making preparations to make sure its business will not be affected, Ito added.

Honda aims to double auto sales in 5 years to 6 million vehicles, fuel-cell vehicle in 2015

TOKYO — Honda is aiming to double its global auto sales to more than 6 million vehicles over the next five years as the Japanese automaker gears up for ambitious growth after bouncing back from last year’s disasters.

“We have now reached the stage of going on the offensive,” Honda Motor Co. President Takanobu Ito told reporters Friday, as he announced his worldwide target for the fiscal year ending March 2017. The automaker sold 3.1 million vehicles for the fiscal year through March 2012.

He said emerging markets would drive growth, including India and China, as Honda plans to strengthen its lineup of cheaper models tailored for such regions.

The remodeled Fit subcompact, which will be rolled out globally starting next year and sold as the Jazz in some regions will also help boost growth, Ito said at Tokyo headquarters. The Fit range of cars will also include a new small sport-utility vehicle, he said.

Ito said model development will get quicker at Honda as its engineers in all regions take part in the effort from the start, while adapting designs and other features to customer needs in each market.

Japanese automakers have been bouncing back from the global production disruptions caused by the disaster in northeastern Japan and Thai floods last year that froze parts supplies.

Also included in Honda’s medium-term strategy:

              — A fuel-cell vehicle in 2015 in Japan, U.S. and Europe.

              — Maintaining production of 1 million vehicles in Japan, which has suffered stagnant demand.

              — Strengthening the tiny “mini-car” lineup in Japan, introducing six such new models by the end of 2015.

              — Offering more hybrids, including a plug-in early next year in the U.S.

Ito did not give prices for the new green car offerings. Cost is one obstacle for such technology becoming more widespread.

Honda Bulks Crosstour Up For 2013, Hopes It Impacts Sales

Honda’s woes are well documented. A reason it hasn’t grown along with the rest of the industry is that its attempts to expand into new segments – such as the Honda Crosstour and Honda CR-Z, have failed. Honda had high hopes for the Crosstour when it launched as a 2010 model.

Theoretically, it should have worked out great: it was a new model debuting into one of the hottest segments in the industry. Things don’t always go according to plan though, as the Crosstour had some big flaws. First was styling – the Crosstour has been universally panned. Second was naming – Honda failed to make it a distinct model.

Third was pricing – Honda charged too much out of the gate. Since launch Honda has dropped the Accord name and tried to revive sales with a four-cylinder model, but neither has worked. They aren’t giving up though; for 2013 they are trying again with an updated model. A thinly veiled “concept” was shown off in April at the New York auto show. It shows off a more rugged look, which is part of a concerted effort.

Speaking to Wards Auto, Honda executive Vicki Poponi says the problem is the car looked too similar to the Accord. “People weren’t exactly sure what it was (because) it was a ‘tweener’……we wanted to reinforce visually for customers that it was much more capable than a sedan” says Poponi. Apparently they think the 2013 will rectify the problem. It’s true the Crosstour isn’t enough like a CUV – but the bigger problem is that it (whatever you consider it) isn’t good looking period. Other changes for 2013 include upgraded interior materials and an 8-inch screen. The Crosstour’s best year of sales was its first, with just 28,851 sold. Somehow we don’t think sales are in for a huge uptick next year.

Hondareparing to avoid impact from possible China customs delay

A delay in customs procedures in China is possible following recent tensions between Japan and China, and Honda Motor Co is making preparations to make sure its business will not be affected, the Japanese automaker's CEO said.

"We are trying to forecast things in advance and preparing as much as possible to avoid any impact on our business," Takanobu Ito told a news conference on Friday.

Honda Civic Natural Gas, 2012: Only CNG car in U.S. turns age 1, still unheralded

Thirteen years after its unceremonious debut in California as the Civic GX, the rebranded Honda Civic Natural Gas vehicle has turned age 1 as the only natural gas vehicle available nationwide.
Honda initially marketed the car to government agencies and commercial users. But beginning in 2005 individual consumers could also lease the car. In the fall of 2011, the Honda Civic Natural Gas received its new name and was for the first time included nationally in Honda’s marketing campaigns.
For nine straight years, the Honda GX and (and now the Natural Gas) have been rated first in the “Greenest Vehicle of the Year” by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. A decade ago, the EPA first designated, the Civic GX as the world’s cleanest-burning internal combustion engine.

The CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) cylinder (fuel tank) is positioned in what would be the trunk and holds just shy of 8.0 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent). The range on a full 3,600 psi fill is variable, depending on driving conditions and driving technique, varies from 180 to 250 miles.
              The Weekly Driver Test Drive
Like the gas Civic, the Civic Natural Gas includes a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder, 16-value engine with a five-speed automatic transmission and the same exterior and interior design as its sibling — with the few major exceptions.
In addition to its half-sized trunk the Civic Natural Gas fuel system changes everything, which I realized about three days into my weekly test drive.
With a range reading of 140 miles and a pending 200-mile round-trip weekend trip, I searched for refueling stations in the Sacramento area. Several websites, including cngprices.com and cngnow.com have intuitive and detailed maps. More CNG locations are available than I expected. United Parcel Service (UPS) and Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) both CNG fleets and both companies’ service locations in Northern California sell CNG to the public.

But conditions apply. Both companies require purchasing a user credit card, and the PG&E and UPS locations are not open on weekends. But there are also sporadically located public CNG locations in Northern California area open daily and that accept standard credit cards.
My wife and I opted for the CNG location near Buchanan Field, the public airport in Concord, Calif. Public use of the CNG stations requires watching a brief instruction video that provides detailed fueling instructions. It’s briefly intimidating and required trust that the small, narrow fuel hose has been properly attached to the car. It’s also startling when the CNG flow begins with a loud “swooshing” sound.
We weren’t sure we had properly followed the directions, so I called the 800-number service number located in the fuel station. I received prompt assistance from a woman who knew our location (there’s a one-way camera) and provided prompt and professional assistance. Our fill-up, slightly more than half the tank, was 4.12 gallons and cost $9.21.
The federal government offers a tax credit to buyers of CNG-powered vehicles, $4,000 for the Civic Natural Gas. States may offer additional credits for both the vehicle and a home-fueling device.
Small front and rear side windows. Alleviates blind spots and gives the Natural Gas sedan a large interior presence.

Continues enduring tradition of Civic’s solid reputation — with a twist. Small learning curve to use natural gas facilities.
Basic, clean and simply organized interior. Is there something wrong with that?
Purchase price is $5-6,000 more than a similarly equipped, naturally aspirated Honda Civic.
              Half-sized trunk good.
Far fewer available fueling stations than gas and also fewer filling stations than available for diesel or E85 vehicles.
              Average acceleration.

Facts & Figures: 2012 Honda Civic (Natural Gas)
              Acceleration: 0-60 mph, unavailable.
              Airbags (6).
Fuel economy: 27 mpg (city), 38 mpg (highway), five-speed automatic transmission (gas equivalent).
Government Safety Ratings: NTHSA, Not rated.
              Horsepower: 110.
              Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: $27,655.00.
              Manufacturer’s Web site: www.honda.com.
              Price As tested: $28,425.00.
              Warranty: Bumper to bumper, 3 years/36,000 miles; Drivetrain, 5 years/60,000 miles; Corrosion, 5 years/unlimited miles; Emissions, 15 years/150,000 miles.
              What Others Say:
“Lately, Honda’s been criticized for falling behind the competition and not doing enough to innovate. With the Civic Natural Gas, the company is a genuine crusader.” — Boston.com.
“The CNG model is almost identical to other new Civics, which means roomy and agile but a bit noisy, with suspension thumps on rough pavement. Plus, the CNG model has a stiffer rear suspension to handle weight and placement of the CNG tank.” — USA Today.
“If the natural-gas infrastructure in your area is well developed and the fuel is cheap, and if you plan to use the car mostly for short commuting, then the Civic Natural Gas may make sense economically and environmentally. But taking a long trip requires prior knowledge of refueling sites and the tiny trunk means you’ll also be traveling light.” — Consumer Reports.

              The Weekly Driver’s Final Words:
“Too often, I hear car buyers considering hybrids and other alternative fuel vehicles utter the words, ‘How long does it take to recoup the increased price?’ If that’s your concern, don’t buy the Honda Civic Natural Gas. If you’re purchasing an alternative fuel vehicle for another reason — environmental beliefs to non-reliance on foreign fuel supplies to whatever reason — the Honda Civic Natural Gas sedan — is a strong, albeit still unheralded, choice. Welcome to the future and good for you.”

Japan carmakers face $250 million in lost China output, new risk

Japanese automakers, led by Nissan Motor Co (7201.T), have lost an estimated $250 million in output because of anti-Japan protests in China this week and now face the risk that sales will sputter in the world's largest car market.

Chinese protesters took to the streets this week in response to an escalating dispute with Japan over ownership of a group of isles in the East China Sea, prompting Japanese automakers including Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T), Honda Motor Co (7267.T) and Nissan to temporarily halt operations at plants in China.

Lost production volume from those suspensions amounted to around 14,000 vehicles as of Thursday, according to an estimate by IHS Automotive. That would mean immediate lost revenue of about $250 million, based on an average vehicle sticker price of about $18,000 for the Japanese brands.

That toll could rise. Toyota said some of its China plants are still suspended, without specifying. Honda also has two factories halted, while Nissan has resumed operations.

Nissan has been the most successful Japanese automaker in China, and is most exposed now. Its projected sales in China account for 27 percent of its global sales volume, compared with 18 percent for Honda and 11 percent for Toyota.

Industry executives and analysts said automakers would be able to make up for lost output by running more overtime.

"What is more important is how consumers will react from now on," said Koichi Sugimoto, a senior analyst at BHP Paribas. "It wouldn't be strange if some people start thinking that it's better to buy South Korean cars then Japanese ones so that their cars won't be destroyed by demonstrators."

Moody's credit rating agency said it was hard to predict how "rising anti-Japanese sentiment" would affect business.

"The possible implications - in an extreme and unanticipated scenario - could include the loss of access to a significant and growing market ... or a reduction in the ability of Japanese manufacturers to locate facilities in China."

With immediately recognizable logos, Japanese cars became a target of havoc for anti-Japan protesters in China. Protesters burned a Toyota dealership in Qingdao and several more dealerships suffered damage, a company spokesman said.

A Honda dealership in Beijing sent out text messages warning customers to be careful. Photos circulated online of Japanese cars carrying banners such as "Car is Japanese, Mind is Chinese" and "From now on, I will boycott Japanese goods".

Some Japanese companies are coming up with contingency plans in case tension escalates. Brake supplier Akebono Brake Industry (7238.T) is preparing contingency plans in case it faces problems in importing materials needed to supply automakers in China, the company's CEO told Reuters on Thursday.

Japanese firms lag rivals General Motors Co (GM.N) and Volkswagen (VOWG.DE) in China but remain keen on expansion.

Toyota aims to double sales in China to 1.8 million cars by 2015. Akio Toyoda, the president of Toyota, said Chinese consumers would recognize the contributions of Japanese automakers and their Chinese partners to the Chinese economy.

"I hope the problem will be resolved soon so that Japanese cars will be back on shopping lists," he told reporters.

For its part, Nissan plans to boost sales in China to 2.3 million vehicles in 2015 and has launched the made-in-China brand name Venucia together with its joint venture partner Dongfeng Motor Group Co (0489.HK).

Reflecting market worries about the fallout, Nissan's Credit Default Swaps have been rising all week and hit a six-week high on Thursday.

Sales in China's auto market grew sharply in 2009 and 2010, but growth fell to 5.2 percent in 2011. Sales are up 4 percent in 2012 so far.

The Toyota Camry, Nissan Teana and Honda Accord represent three of the top five selling mid-size cars in China.

While the current tension may create an opening for brands like Hyundai (005380.KS), auto market share is unlikely to shift much as long as Beijing moves to contain the protests, said Michael Dunne, a Hong Kong-based auto consultant.

"It's a secret to no one that there is a certain animosity that Chinese people feel to Japan for historical reasons. At the same time, it has not stopped them from buying millions of Japanese cars," he said. "As much as they love their flag, they love their money more."

The Manchurian Candidate: Anti-Japan Protests Good News for German Automaker in China

One man’s loss is another man’s gain. That’s the way it has always been and that’s the way it is today, especially in the corporate world. Case in point: China’s anti-Japan protests, which seem to turn uglier each passing day. Toyota, Nissan and Honda have been forced to shut down their plants after attacks on some of their operations and dealerships.
Nevertheless, Chinese consumers still buy cars. If they shy away from Japanese vehicles, then they will probably turn to other brands from nations with which they have no quarrel.
As the territorial dispute between the two countries doesn’t seem to subside, China’s Passenger Car Association predicts that German brands will overtake their Japanese rivals this year for the first time since 2005, with the former’s share of the market rising to 22.5 percent and the latter’s dropping to 22 percent.
"The repercussions for Japanese carmakers are very serious and will last for a long time", Cui Dongshu, deputy secretary general of the Passenger Car Association told Bloomberg News. "There are plenty of choices. Why bother with Japanese brands if there are concerns of safety due to anti-Japan sentiment?"
Sherry Wang is just one example of a Chinese citizen who’s afraid to drive her two-year old Toyota Camry and is commuting by bus these days: “I’m afraid that my car or I will become a target”, she explains. “I just hope life will get back to normal as quickly as possible.”
Even though the States is not taking sides, protesters right in front of the U.S. embassy surrounded the ambassador’s car and caused mild damages before the police intervened.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. estimates China accounts for 30 percent of profit at Nissan, 17 percent at Toyota and 15 percent at Honda. With Japanese automakers halting their production and sales declining rapidly, September sales will hit their lowest point in 2012 and profits will decline, at least in the short term.
The irony is that practically all the Toyotas, Nissans etc. sold in China are manufactured by joint ventures between the Japanese and local manufacturers that are also hurt by this situation. Sadly, the angry mob is unlikely to grasp this concept…
You can view videos of the riots and the attack on the US ambassador’s car right after the break.

Honda Cars to introduce diesel vehicles next fiscal
The company has seen a market share dip due to increased competition from global players

Japanese auto major Honda Motor Corporation (HMC) which has seen sales sagging in the Indian market will introduce an all new diesel engine by the end of the next financial year.

Global CEO HMC Takanobu Ito said in his speech in Tokyo today, “In India, an all-new diesel engine will be adopted sequentially to new models starting inFY2014.In addition to the high fuel efficiency, the cost competitiveness of the all-new diesel engine will be enhanced through local sourcing and local production to make new diesel models more affordable for customers.”

Honda Cars India, which has an all petrol line-up in the country, has seen market share dip over the decade due to increased competition from global players. The company’s lack of diesel engines has added to its woes in the domestic market. Diesel is 31% cheaper than petrol in the country, which has made an increasing number of consumers opt for diesel vehicles over the last one year. According to industry estimates, in the first five months of this financial year, sales of diesel vehicles soared to account for 64% of the passenger vehicle industry in India, while off-take of most petrol driven variants dropped by over 20%.

Between April and August this year, Honda Cars India’s sales have grown by 54% to 29,932 units though the growth has come on a low base. Honda’s operations were severely disrupted for a major part of the last financial year due to the earthquake in Japan and the floods in Thailand.

Globally, Honda is aiming at doubling sales of automobiles to six million units by 2017. As much as half the volumes for the company will come from emerging markets like India and China. To bring in the numbers, apart from the new Fit (Jazz) series, HMC will introduce sedans and small utility vehicles based on the Brio platform, which is the company’s strategic model for Asia.

In the last financial year, Honda Cars India’s sales declined by 8.47% to 54,427 vehicles. The company has only recently introduced small car Brio in the Indian market.

Honda to launch first diesel car in India in FY'14: Global CEO

TOKYO/NEW DELHI: Japanese auto giant Honda today said it will launch its first diesel driven car in India by March 2014 and the engine for the same will be produced locally in the country.

"In India, an all-new diesel engine will be adopted sequentially to new models starting in FY14 (fiscal year ending March 31, 2014)," Honda Motor Co Chief Executive Officer Takanobu Ito said here.

He further said the company will locally produce the diesel engines, thereby signalling setting up of a diesel engine plant in India in future.

"In addition to the high fuel efficiency, the cost competitiveness of the all-new diesel engine will be enhanced through local sourcing and local production to make new diesel models more affordable for customers," Ito said.

Although he did not share details such as the engine capacities to be developed by its subsidiary Honda Cars India, a source said the diesel engine will first be fitted to a new sedan that is being developed at present.

"In Asia, in order to compete in and win in highly competitive low-price markets and fulfill the diverse needs of customers, in addition to the all-new Fit Series, Honda will add sedan-type and utility-type models utilising the platform of the Brio," Ito said.

The company will further try to increase sales and growth in Asia by strengthening its "mutually complementary structure in the region, especially among Thailand, Indonesia, India and Malaysia", he added.

Honda Cars India has been facing tough challenge from its competitors as it does not have any diesel models. As huge price gap between petrol and diesel continuing to exist, auto makers offering diesel models are gaining market shares.

The sales of Honda Cars India during 2011-12 dipped 8.47 per cent to 54,427 units against 59,463 units sold in FY'11.

Talking about its two-wheeler business, Ito said the company will strengthen its presence in the volume-driven 100 cc segment by introducing more products.

"In India, Honda will strive to further grow its motorcycle business through introduction of highly-competitive models in the 100 cc segment, which is the largest segment in the motorcycle market in India," he added.

The company will also start production at its third two-wheeler plant in India in the first half of 2013, he said.

"Using further growth in emerging markets, where continuous expansion is expected, as a driving force, Honda will continue to be proactive in evolving its motorcycle business," Ito said.

For the entire 2011-12 fiscal in the two-wheeler space, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India's total sales increased by 27.19 per cent to 21,07,228 units from 16,56,727 units in the previous fiscal.

Honda Says it has "No Immediate Plans" to Replace the Accord in Europe

While in the United States, the Accord is Honda's bestselling nameplate with 218,665 deliveries this year (from January 1 through August 31), in Europe, things aren't anywhere near as rosy.

Speaking to Just-Auto, a spokesperson for Honda said that Accord sales in the continent have plummeted to the point that the car has become a niche model. As a result, the spokesman said that the Japanese carmaker has "no immediate plans" to launch a new model in Europe.

That doesn't mean it won't, but that Honda is in no hurry to offer a replacement, preferring instead to focus on the European market launch of the new CR-V and the all-important 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine to be offered initially on the Civic and then of the CR-V.

The current generation of the European Accord sedan differs from the previous North American market model as it is directly related to the Acura TSX.

Recently, Honda dropped a teaser image of the new Accord for the Russian market, with the car looking identical to the North American model. According to Just-Auto, this can be explained by the fact that Honda Europe does not include Russia, which has its own separate division reporting directly to Japan.

New Honda Civic Type R, Compact SUV on Tap for Europe

                  Just the Facts:

A new Honda Civic Type R will debut in Europe in 2015, along with a compact SUV based on the next-generation Honda Jazz/Fit.
The redesigned Civic Type R is not expected to be sold in the U.S.
Honda also said it will launch a new fuel-cell electric model in the U.S., Japan and Europe starting in 2015.

TOKYO — A redesigned Honda Civic Type R will debut in Europe in 2015, along with a new compact SUV based on the platform architecture of the next-generation Honda Jazz (sold as the Fit in the U.S.), the automaker confirmed on Friday.

Word of the new Civic Type R was part of a larger product and business announcement by Honda, including the pledge that the Japanese automaker intends to double its global auto sales to 6 million vehicles in five years.

Like its predecessors, the Civic Type R is not expected to be sold in the U.S.

Honda said the unnamed compact SUV "will strengthen its model lineup in Europe."

Honda also said it will launch a new fuel-cell electric model in the U.S., Japan and Europe starting in 2015.

"(The) new fuel cell electric model will showcase the significant technological advancements and cost reductions that Honda has accomplished since the launch of the FCX Clarity in 2008," the automaker said in a statement.

Honda also said it plans to introduce three new hybrid systems based on "one-motor, two-motor and three-motor hybrid configurations."

"Following the introduction of the (Honda) Accord Plug-in Hybrid Electric model in early 2013, a two-motor hybrid Accord will be introduced in the U.S., followed by Japan and other regions," Honda said.

A high-output three-motor system, the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (super-handling all-wheel drive) system will debut on the 2014 Acura RLX and upcoming Acura NSX.

Edmunds says: Honda detailed its big ambitions on Friday, but don't look for a Civic Type R hatch or a Fit-based crossover on American roads any time soon.

Fourth Generation Honda CR-V Hits Abuja Market

The fourth generation Honda CR-V, again received a thunderous applause when The Honda Place (THP), authorised marketers of Honda automobiles took the wrap off the appraised model at a gala night in Abuja.

The remodeled crossover had in June, 2012, at a previous launch at the Ocean View Restaurant, Lagos, reawakened the enthusiasm of automobile enthusiasts that witnessed the unveiling ceremony.

Coming 16 years after it was introduced, the CR-V has continued to enjoy customer loyalty and increasing sales year-on-year, due to its uniqueness, ample passenger room, cargo capacity and competitive pricing.

A successful global brand, the CR-V has in these years of tremendous achievements elicited more than a dozen different competitive models from rival automakers making their way into the mid-sized SUV category.

At the event which recently held at Abuja Sheraton Hotels, the Branch Manager, The Honda Place, Abuja, Mr Arvind Sharma, who gave this insight in his presentation, described the new CR-V as sedanlike ride with stunning economical four-cylinder engine spectrum with remarkable handling.

He said: “While some models offer V6 engines, Honda CR-V has remained focused on its practical aspirations and true-to-form design, becoming the best choice available in the all-important compact, small-SUV segment,” Sharma noted.

Redesigned for 2012, the new Honda CR-V maintains its previous size, with minimal hardware changes though with enough style and feature modification to keep Honda’s top selling crossover fully competitive.

And like its predecessor, the remodeled CR-V is offered in familiar LX and EX-L trim levels.

The LX model though comes pretty well-equipped, its EX-L option gets additional convenience and luxury features, but without navigation systems for the local market.

A peep in the hood underscores CR-V’s standard 2.4-litre inline four cylinder engine with 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque’ mated to Honda’s fashionable five-speed transmission, just as all models comes in the traditional front wheel drive safe for the all-wheel drive that is optional.

The Abuja branch manager of The Honda Place said CR-V list of features is amazing, adding that its intelligently thought-out interior with high quality materials distinguishes the crossover from competitions.

Coupled with this, he noted, is the car’s comfortable ride, quieter engine (than before), better road handling and remarkable steering high points.

Other technical features on the new CR-V focuses on the next generation mini-utilities, which come as standard, e.g. two info screens, a rear view camera, Bluetooth, and a function that reads incoming text messages from paired phones – provided the phone is a BlackBerry.

Honda has also improved on the CR-V’s fuel management system, improving from 21/28mpg city/highway to 23/31mpg and the all-wheel-drive models from 21/27mpg to 22/30mpg.

Mr. Sharma said the main goal of the 2012 Honda CR-V is to be an excellent family vehicle as affirmed by test drivers.

Safety however remains a strong selling point for the CR-V. With top five-star government safety ratings, the CR-V ranks best among safety- conscious cars in its class.

Other standard safety features includes stability control, braking assist, and front-side and head-protecting side curtain air bags.

Honda has undoubtedly traverse several hurdles in its six-and-half year decade in automobile engineering, becoming an icon with a lineup that runs the gamut.

Some of Honda inspiring models are fuel-sipping hybrids, spacious minivan, reliable family sedans, practical SUVs and a pickup. Honda's brand as a whole continues to be one of the most respected in the industry, with millions of loyal and satisfied customers.

Honda confirms future products, including new Jazz for 2013 and Euro-market Civic Type R for 2015

Here’s a glimpse into the future for Honda – CEO Takanobu Ito has divulged the company’s product development plans through to 2015. A new Civic Type R, based on the Euro-market hatchback, is currently undergoing development for a 2015 introduction, “with the goal of becoming the fastest front-wheel drive vehicle on the Nurburgring.”

Also for Europe is an all-new Jazz, due next year. Within the two years that follow after that, Honda will release a Jazz-based small SUV. The North American equivalents of both (called the Fit) will start production at the company’s new plant in Mexico by spring 2014.

Ito added that in addition to the next-gen NSX, a new open-top sports car will go on sale in Japan in 2014. Carscoop speculates that the rear-wheel drive EV-STER (pictured) may be its inspiration, so you may put aside your S2000 revival fantasies for now.

The production Acura RLX will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November, and Japan will get it in the form of the Honda Legend.

Other confirmations include the launch of an all-new fuel cell electric model for the US, Japan and Europe in 2015 and the development of lightweight one- and two-motor hybrid systems.

Honda to offer three hybrid systems; new fuel cell vehicles for US, Japan, Europe in 2015

Honda Motor Co. CEO, Takanobu Ito, outlined the product, technology and business developments and direction planned to drive Honda’s growth by fiscal year 2017; among these are a plan to introduce three hybrid systems, Ito said. Each system will possess unique characteristics and their deployment will reflect varying customer needs.

First, Honda will further develop its lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid system (IMA) with the aim of achieving leading fuel economy among all hybrid vehicles. Improvements in motor output and battery performance, coupled with a newly developed transmission will help to extend the zero emission electric driving range.

Honda is also developing a new more powerful two-motor hybrid system for mid-size vehicles. The 2014 Accord plug-in currently features Honda’s first two-motor hybrid system, and uses a new Earth Dreams i-VTEC 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine producing 137 hp (102 kW) at 6200 rpm, teamed with a 124 kW electric motor. Electric driving is supported by a 6.7 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery pack, and total system output is 196 hp (146 kW). The total system output surpasses that of the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid (134 hp), Chevrolet Volt (149 hp) and projected output of the Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. (Earlier post.)

Finally, a highly efficient and high output 3-motor hybrid system, the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) will focus on driving performance. This technology will be applied to the new NSX, Acura RLX Sport Hybrid model and the successor model of Legend which will be introduced in Japan in 2014. (Earlier post.)

Ito said that Honda will continue its efforts to develop full batter-electric EV models with which Honda will strive to realize further market penetration of EVs. Ito also said that in 2015, Honda will launch an all-new fuel cell electric model which will showcase the significant technological advancements and cost reductions that Honda has accomplished since the launch of the FCX Clarity. This model will be introduced to Japan, USA and Europe.

Ito said that Honda will further advance its “Earth Dreams Technology” through the improvement of internal combustion components including the engine, along with the transmission, and also through advancement of electromotive technologies applied to motors and other components.

For gasoline-powered vehicles, Honda will continue developing internal combustion engines which will increase fuel economy to what Ito called “the ultimate level”. Honda will adopt the newly-developed engine series first to the all-new 2013 Accord, and will continue to adopt it sequentially to other models.

Refreshing or Revolting: 2013 Honda Accord Coupe

A couple weeks ago, we took a close look at the 2013 Honda Accord sedan’s design, but now it’s time to evaluate the styling of the 2013 Accord’s sportier counterpart, the coupe. Unlike older Honda Accord coupes, the 2013 model is more than just an Accord sedan with only two doors. The new two-door Honda has styling changes that help set it apart from the more popular sedan, but is it more attractive?

2013 Honda Accord coupe front view 300x187 imageAside from the lines on the hood that make the 2013 Accord coupe look athletic, the Japanese automaker has a blacked-out honeycomb grille in place the outgoing car’s grille, which had a chrome strip at its top. A larger airdam, and big round fog lights complete the differences on the lower front bumper, while LED daytime running lights in the headlights complete the changes up front. Looking at the new car head-on, the side mirrors appear chunkier than before.

The new 2013 Accord coupe’s rear end also looks wider than that of the outgoing car. The taillights have been squished, and the decklid spoiler that sits above them now extends the full length of the car. Two chunky housings with rear reflectors in the lower rear bumper are new and connected by a thin chrome strip. Diamond-patterned wheels that replace the five-spoke wheels on the previous-gen Accord add extra pizzazz.

2013 Honda Accourd coupe cockpit 300x187 imageInside, the HVAC vents flank an available audio touch screen, with climate control buttons aligned into two rows beneath it. The instrument cluster now features the speedometer in the center, not off to the right as in the 2012 model.

What do you think of the new 2013 Honda Accord coupe? Does it look better than before? Let us know in the comments below.

Last week, we examined the 2014 Volkswagen Golf four-door hatchback. Some couldn’t really tell the differences, like versaces who said, “Is it new? It looks a lot like the old one.”

Those who could tell the differences agreed the new car was an improvement. “Refreshing! The old one is still decent, but this redesign makes it look modern, and fresh,” said 02eclipse.

Adamlink said it was “one of the best looking hatchbacks I’ve ever seen.”

                    Honda planning Fit-based crossover

Looking to expand its crossover lineup primarily in Europe and Asia, Honda has announced that it will build a new, high-seat vehicle based on the next-generation version of its Fit subcompact.
Technically, the as-of-yet unnamed crossover will ride on the Honda Jazz architecture, but the Jazz is essentially identical to the North American Fit underneath the skin.
The new Honda will go up against rivals like the Nissan Juke, Opel Mokka (sold in North America as the Buick Encore) and the upcoming Ford Ecosport in Europe and Asia. It's unclear whether it will make it into the North American market, where it won't have many direct rivals aside from the oddly-matched Juke and MINI Countryman.
Honda's CEO, Takanubo Ito, will let loose a few more details about the Fit-based crossover at next week's Paris show, although the Japanese automaker is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to detailing future products.
At the very least, we speculate that a downsized four-cylinder engine using the automaker's new Earth Dreams efficiency strategy will power the vehicle, while an ultra-compact CVT should send power to the front or all four wheels depending on the individual specification level.

Fuel-cell vehicles in future for Honda
Japanese carmaker will sell new electric model in U.S. by ’15

Honda plans to introduce a fuel-cell electric vehicle that would go on sale in the United States in 2015.

Takanobu Ito, Honda’s president and CEO, announced the move in a wide-ranging speech in Japan yesterday in which he set sales goals for the company for the next five years.

“This new fuel-cell vehicle will showcase further technological advancement and significant cost reduction that Honda has accomplished,” he said, according to a transcript.

Honda has two assembly plants and a research and development office in central Ohio. Ito did not say where the fuel-cell vehicle would be developed or how many would be produced. However, the company tends to do its initial work on new technologies close to its Tokyo headquarters.

Ito said Honda considers fuel-cell electric vehicles to be the “ultimate environmentally responsible vehicle.”

A fuel cell converts fuel, often natural gas or hydrogen, into electricity. For years, auto engineers have said fuel cells hold tremendous potential to reduce harmful emissions. Several automakers, including Toyota and General Motors, have said they intend to build a fuel-cell vehicle by 2015.

Honda is well-positioned to make the most of this initiative, said Pat Valenti, executive director of the Ohio Fuel Cell Coalition. He points to the FCX Clarity, a limited-release fuel-cell car that Honda has produced for a decade. The company has sold fewer than 100 of the hydrogen-fueled vehicle.

The FCX is three times as fuel-efficient as a gasoline-powered vehicle and twice as efficient as a gasoline-electric hybrid, according to Honda.

“They have been learning over the last four or five years what works and what doesn’t work,” said Valenti, whose business group represents dozens of Ohio companies that build fuel cells and related components for a variety of uses. “If anything, they’re going to be a step ahead of the other companies.”

While he is excited about Honda’s announcement, he also sees some big challenges. The largest obstacle is the lack of infrastructure to fuel the vehicles, Valenti said.

Ito also laid out some ambitious sales goals in yesterday’s speech. In “mature markets” — which include the U.S., Japan and Europe — he wants auto sales to increase from an estimated 2.06 million units this year to 3 million in 2017. In developing markets — which include India, China and others — Ito wants sales to increase from about 1.5 million units this year to 3 million in 2017.

                      He closed with this:

“Honda would like to continue growing while highlighting what makes Honda unique in order to further expand the joys for our customers and society.”

Honda's diesel car attack will begin in India from April 2014

The first diesel engine will debut with a new sedan based on the Brio hatchback in the country.
We have no doubt that Honda Cars India has some aces rolled up its sleeves to make sure they make a comeback in the Indian auto industry and grab the market share that was lost due to the unavailability of a diesel engine in the current era of ridiculous petrol prices.

It is no secret that Honda is developing its range of diesel engines under its new 'Earth Dreams' technology series, the first engine of which, a 1.6-litre is expected to debut in the Euro-spec Honda Civic at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

We also knew that a new MPV based on the Honda Jazz platform, codenamed '2NH' is in the making and also a new MPV based on the Brio platform is in works that is expected to be ready by 2014. Then no too long ago, we also reported that a new sedan based on the Brio platform is also in development.

However, none of the above mentioned developments were confirmed by Honda Cars India - until now. In a speech delivered by Mr Takanobu Ito, CEO Honda Motor Corporation this Friday, some of the automaker's future plans came into light. The most significant of which, was the announcement of the first diesel engine for the Asian market that will mark its debut with a new entry-level sedan based on the Brio hatchback. Furthermore, the said diesel engine will be locally produced in the country.

From the CEO's speech it was also derived that there is infact, a new MPV based on Brio platform in the pipeline that could also make way into the Indian market by 2014. Whereas as the '2NH' MPV is concerned, it now stands confirmed that a new Jazz model is in development that will arrive in 2013 and within two years of its debut, the new Jazz will spin off three new models on the same platform.

"In India, an all-new diesel engine will be adopted sequentially to new models starting in FY14." Mr Ito said. "In Asia, in order to compete in and win in highly competitive low-price markets and fulfill the diverse needs of customers, in addition to the all-new Fit Series, Honda will add sedan-type and utility-type models utilising the platform of the Brio," Ito added.
On the flip side, it was understood that the company is not planning to introduce diesel engines in any of the existing cars like the City, Jazz or the Brio. But would add them to the new line of cars that are expected to launch by the end of next fiscal year.

Jnaneswar Sen, senior vice-president, sales and marketing, Honda Cars India said, “We will start with launching an entry-level sedan on the Brio platform next year. There will not be any diesel option on the existing models we have.”

Yes, this last bit of information seems to be highly confusing; considering that the Honda Brio diesel has so far been caught on test in the country twice. Guess, Mr Sen is trying to mislead our curious minds or may be the spy shots were misleading. Or may be there is something completely different cooking.

But whatever it is, stay tuned to OnCars.in as we dig up more information on the subject and get it across to you, as soon as we possibly can.

Dear Honda: It’s Time To Throw America A Bone And Give Us A Civic Type R

                      Zac Estrada
I explained last week why I have reason to believe the new, smaller Accord is back on track to be a decent driver's car in family sedan clothes –- like it used to be in the 80s and 90s. Looks like there's hope the Civic's dark days could end, too.
Word is the upcoming Civic Type R hot hatch will be just that again: a hot hatch. Americans, unfortunately, haven't had a Civic hatch since the 2002-2005 Civic Si. And that one was lukewarm at best. The current Civic Si coupes and sedans have been raucous little rockets, but the Type R has always been on a whole other level.
Not that we Americans would know. Honda has never sent the Civic Type R our way, and that includes the most recent version, which was actually two cars — a sedan for the Asian market and a hatch for the Europeans.
But Autocar reported Friday the newest incarnation, debuting in 2015 and based on the fantastic-looking Civic hatch made for Europeans and built in Britain, is being built to be the fastest front-wheel drive car to lap the Nurburgring. You have my attention, Honda.
Honda insiders say it will be developed off of technology from the World Touring Car Championship and could have a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Sounds like a GTI killer to me, and maybe even a Golf R fighter. And a Honda turbo should theoretically have lots of torque and still be able to rev and rev.
I think the current Civic Si is decent, but suffers the same drawbacks as all of the latest American Civics: ungainly looks, cheapo interior, generally insipid aura. Many reviews say it still lags behind its turbocharged competition, like the WRX and Mazdaspeed3.
And while the latest Euro Civic has been criticized for not being a quantum leap over the previous model, it's still regarded as a major advance over the one we get and more up to standards set by the Golf and Focus. Even in base spec, it looks wicked futuristic compared to its unrefined, rural cousin we get over here.
Honda has a chance to offer a serious rival to the hot Golfs and Focuses in this country, too. What if it positioned the Civic Type R in the vein of the Integra Type R, a specialized but sophisticated hot hatch? (Don't badge it as an Acura here, because a chrome beak has no place on this car.) Honda could finally offer something to directly combat the hottest hatches in this country, and something that could at least rival VW on quality and driving dynamics. It would also provide some desperately needed eye candy at Honda showrooms. Honestly, it's hard for any little boy to get excited over any new Honda in the showroom. But some would dream of the day when they can reach the pedals in a Civic Type R.
But the biggest reason to bring the next Type R to America is simple: Honda, you used to give us the same great Civics you supplied the rest of the world with. Why can't we have that again? Why can't our Civics be neatly styled and fun to drive, too? Why can't we have hatches again? Ford, Hyundai, VW, Kia and others have proven Americans will buy them.
Americans buy a lot of Hondas. I live in California. It used to be if you told a Civic driver there was a better small car, their face would make the same look if you told them you hit a baby with a rolled-up newspaper. Some day, they're going to wander into a Mazda dealer and have a go in a 3, which is much better in many ways. The Honda-ists here are still so incredibly faithful. If American Honda is going to pass off the Fiber One version of the Civic to us, why can't we also get a sweeter, tastier version as well? The Frosted Flakes Civic, if you will.
What do you think? Is it time for Honda to hook us up with the Civic Type R, or is the Type R legend a thing of the past?

Honda’s redesigned Accord earns initial compliments

A new generation of the Ohio-made Honda Accord has gone on sale, boosted by glowing reviews but facing some tough competition.
The 2013 Accord gets better fuel economy than its predecessor and comes with a host of new standard safety features. After decades of bulking up, this version has a slightly smaller body than the model it replaces. The price ranges from $21,680 to $33,430, a slight increase from before.
For Honda, which assembles the Accord in Marysville, this rollout is the key moment in a comeback year. The automaker is bouncing back from the turmoil caused by natural disasters in Asia, which led to disappointing sales in 2011.
“The Accord is very strong, and personally I would consider it near the top of the class,” said Erin Riches, a senior editor for Edmunds.com who road-tested the new model.
A few years ago, it was a foregone conclusion that the Accord would rank first or second in the midsize-sedan class, she said. The Toyota Camry and the Accord were often the top sellers and among the best-reviewed.
Since then, several other automakers have improved their rival vehicles, making the segment among the most competitive in the industry. In addition to the Camry and Accord, the top players include the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Chevrolet Malibu.
Honda has said its goal is to sell 350,000 Accords a year in the United States. That is a realistic target, considering that annual sales of the Accord topped 400,000 from 1998 through 2001 and exceeded 350,000 from 2002 through 2008.
Last year, sales sank to 235,625, the fewest since the 1980s, largely because of availability problems caused by parts shortages stemming from Japan’s earthquake and tsunami and Thailand’s floods.
Honda began mass production of the 2013 model last month at its plant in Marysville. The company employs about 13,500 people in Ohio.
“There is no mistaking the importance of the all-new 2013 Accord,” said Hidenobu Iwata, president and CEO of Honda of America Manufacturing, speaking last month.
The new Accord is available as a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe. A plug-in hybrid version will go on sale next year.
Jim Erwin, new car sales manager at Roush Honda in Westerville, Ohio, said some of the model’s best attributes are apparent contradictions, made possible by advances in engineering.
“It’s smaller on the outside, but has more interior space,” Erwin said. “It has a larger engine, but better fuel economy.”
Mike Omotoso, senior manager of global powertrain for LMC Automotive in Detroit, liked what he saw when he drove the coupe and a preliminary version of the plug-in. His research firm does forecasting for clients in the auto industry. “The biggest change is more emphasis on safety features,” he said.
Those features include a standard rearview camera. Some trim levels include a system that alerts a driver who gets too close to the vehicle in front or drifts into the next lane.
Assessing the plug-in version, Omotoso was impressed with a transmission that makes a seamless switch from battery power to the gasoline engine.
One of the most-influential media outlets, Consumer Reports, used this headline for its initial review: “The 2013 Honda Accord impresses on our first drive.”
This is the same magazine that panned Honda’s 2010 redesign of the Civic, contributing to a tepid response for that vehicle. Although the Civic was “lackluster,” the Accord “should certainly hold its own in both the marketplace and, barring unforeseen surprises, in our ratings,” said the review on Consumer Reports’ website.

Honda to hike prices of Brio, Jazz, City models

Honda Cars India on Monday said it will raise prices of its three models - Brio, Jazz and City - by up to 2.6 per cent with effect from October 1, mainly due to rising input costs.

"Honda Cars India Ltd today [Monday] announced an increase in the price of its volume models - Brio, Jazz and City - in the range of 0.2-2.6 per cent on their current price," the company said in a statement.

The revised prices will be effective from October 1, 2012, it added.

"The prices have been revised due to the rising input costs, inflationary pressures and increase in freight as a result of the increase in diesel prices," the company said.

The existing prices of the small car Brio is priced between Rs 4.05 lakh and Rs 5.23 lakh.

The premium compact car Jazz is offered at Rs 5.85 lakh to Rs 6.41 lakh.

The company currently sells its flagship sedan City at Rs 7.25 lakh to Rs 10.46 lakh.

All the prices are as per Honda Cars India's official website and are for ex-showroom, Delhi.

Toyota and Honda restart operations in China

China is spelling chaos these days on account of the Senkaku island dispute. The hot and cold relationship is blowing tepid at the moment. News is that Toyota and Honda among other Japanese companies have resumed operations in China. They had to halt their work due to the vandalism of their dealership showrooms by anti-Japan protestors.

Toyota’s company showroom was attacked and so was Honda’s but electronic giants like Sony too felt the heat. Some companies restarted their work last week but with the news of China once again pulling out of the 40 th anniversary celebrations marking diplomatic ties between Japan and China, you never know how long this peace wave will last.

Japan’s carmakers all have their production plants located at the eastern port city of Qingdao, this includes carmakers Toyota, Nissan and Honda. All these dealerships had reported attacks and suspended production at their respective plants. Shopping chain stores Aeon and Uniqlo Apparel, a subsidiary of Fast Retailing were also affected by the anti-Japan wave in China.

ECHONET-Compliant Appliances Included in Prototype Toshiba-Honda Smart Homes

Toshiba Corp. is participating in a demonstration testing of a smart home system that Honda Motor Company has been conducting in the Japanese city of Saitama. The two companies will jointly conduct demonstration testing with the goal of pursuing the optimization of energy generation and usage.

The two companies are striving to establish a smart home system to achieve optimized energy management in everyday life and continuous power supply in case of a disaster or emergency. The homes optimally control energy generation devices, including smart home appliances complying with the ECHONET Lite standards, solar power generation systems, and gas engine cogeneration system, as well as household batteries and electric vehicles (EVs).

Since April 2012, as a part of the E-KIZUNA Project run by the city of Saitama, Honda has been conducting demonstration testing using two smart home system equipped houses built on land adjacent to Saitama University. The goal is to further reduce CO2 emissions from people's everyday lives, including mobility. The third demonstration house, which will be completed before the end of the next fiscal year (ending March 31, 2014), will be equipped with energy management systems from both Toshiba and Honda.

Toshiba will employ its smart meter and provide energy management in the community by networking the three testing houses as well as the technology controlling appliances in each house. Honda will provide energy generation and storage technologies as well as EVs. The two companies also will explore the possibility of collaborating their cloud-based services, realizing the interconnectivity of their products and reusing Toshiba's SCiBTM battery installed in Honda EVs.

Japanese car companies suspend marketing in China

Several Japanese auto brands, including Nissan, Honda and Mazda, have postponed some of their marketing events in China while the dispute over the Diaoyu Islands rumbles on. Experts noted Monday that the dispute will inevitably cast a shadow over the sales performance of Japanese cars this year.
“We have not been doing any marketing events for the Nissan brand recently,” Luo Yun, a spokeswoman at Zhengzhou Nissan Automobile Co, a Sino-Japanese joint venture, told the Global Times Monday.
Recent news of Chinese protesters smashing Japanese cars has put off a lot of potential buyers of Japanese cars, and both sales and marketing plans have been affected, Zhu Linjie, a spokesman at Honda China, told the Global Times Monday.
Guangqi Honda Automobile Co, a joint venture between Honda Motor Co and Guangzhou Automobile Group, has aborted the plan to launch its new Accord model at the end of this month, the Beijing News reported Monday.
Most Japanese brands have not yet adjusted their annual sales target, but analysts said that sales this year will surely be influenced given Chinese consumers’ strong feelings against Japanese brands at present.
Guo Yanchun, a spokesperson at Toyota’s Beijing Sanyuanqiao dealership, told the Global Times that sales of the brand have fallen during the past two weeks.
“News of Chinese protesters smashing Japanese cars has greatly reduced consumers’ desire for Japanese cars. The usual peak sales season of October will surely be affected,” Su Hui, deputy director of the auto market division at the China Automobile Dealers Association, told the Global Times.
Recent anti-Japan protests have also affected the daily operations of Japanese companies.
On September 18, the date marking Japan’s invasion of China in 1931, Japanese car brands including Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Mitsubishi Motors suspended part of their production in China. Toyota did not resume production until Monday.
Disputes between China and Japan have cast a shadow on the bilateral trade between the two countries. He Weiwen, co-director of the China-US-EU Study Center under the China Association of International Trade, told the Global Times that Japan will suffer more in the current dispute as Japan relies much more on the Chinese economy.
But Zhang Yu, managing director at consultancy firm Automotive Foresight (Shanghai) Co, said that domestic brands will not benefit much from the current dispute, as “domestic brands and Japanese cars target very different consumer groups.”
Experts believe that auto brands from the US, South Korea, and Europe, especially German brands, are expected to see better performance, given the slide in demand for Japanese cars.
In August, sales of Japanese cars in China saw month-on-month growth of just 2.3 percent, compared with more than 10 percent growth for auto brands from countries such as the US, South Korea and Germany, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed earlier this month.

Honda to hike prices of Brio, Jazz, City by up to 2.6 per cent

New Delhi: Honda Cars India said it will raise prices of its three models - Brio, Jazz and City - by up to 2.6 per cent with effect from October 1, mainly due to rising input costs.

"Honda Cars India Ltd today announced an increase in the price of its volume models - Brio, Jazz and City - in the range of 0.2-2.6 per cent on their current price," the company said in a statement.

India's monthly car sales fell in August for the first time in ten months, as a gloomy economic outlook and high interest rates dampened demand.

                          Honda eyes tax rebate

Honda plans to introduce a new small car in the A-car segment before the tax rebate under the government's first-time car buyer programme ends this year.

Currently, five Honda models _ the Brio, Jazz, Jazz Hybrid, City and City CNG _ are qualified for the tax scheme rebate.

Customers can reserve a car to obtain the first-time car buyer tax rebate by Dec 31.

Honda Automobile (Thailand) will set another record in the automotive industry with the upcoming launch of its new A-car sedan.

The new car model will be powered by a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, 90-horsepower engine and a storage trunk with room enough for two golf bags.

It is also equipped with safety equipment including an anti-lock braking system and front dual SRS airbags.

The new model will be another choice for customers in the fourth quarter, before the first-car tax rebate programme ends.

Honda did not name the new car model or disclose its price.

The Honda 'Everything Fits Easier' Campaign Promotes Its Spacious Trunk

The Honda ‘Everything Fits Easier’ ad campaign cleverly shows that items placed in its trunk, be them inanimate or not, will appear to be a lot smaller than they are. That’s because it is so roomy that it can fit quite a bit. With “over 70 cubic feet of cargo space in the 2012 CR-V,” as stated in the print ads, the campaign revolves around images of a chair, golf club set and dog, all of which have been surreally compressed.

Conceived and executed by Dare, an ad agency based in the United States, the Honda ‘Everything Fits Easier’ ad campaign was art directed and creative directed by Rob Sweetman with additional creative direction by Bryan Collins. Hilariously photographed by Anthony Redpath, the copy for the campaign was written by Mia Thomsett.

Consumers Reports praises Escape, raps Fisker Karma

Consumer Reports on Tuesday issued a new review praising Ford Motor Co.'s new 2013 Escape, while harshly criticizing the plug-in hybrid electric sports car Fisker Karma.

"With its redesign, the Escape has jumped into the top tier of small SUVs, competing well with the Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V," Consumer Reports said. "The new Ford Escape is solid, sophisticated, and fun to drive. It delivers agile handling and a taut yet impressively supple, composed ride. Its cabin is one of the quietest in its class. Both EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engines are fuel-efficient."

Consumer Reports in its November issue tested the 2013 Ford Escape Titanium and Escape SE small SUVs, Karma and Porsche Panamera, along with the Infiniti JX, and the Acura ILX and Buick Verano compact upscale sedans.

Ford has hit some bumps with the new Escape. It has issued three recall campaigns for some 2013 Escapes since the vehicle went on sale in June.

But the Escape was up 37 percent in August and the automaker has added a third shift to build the SUV in Louisville.

The Karma can go gas-free for 38 miles — similar to the Chevrolet Volt — but Consumer Reports' "engineers found it full of flaws: Compared with other luxury sedans, the Karma has tight confines and limited visibility, and a badly designed touch-screen system makes the dash controls an ergonomic disaster."

Consumer Reports bought its own $107,850 Karma, the most expensive car it had ever tested

"Despite the car's huge dimensions, it's very cramped inside. The over-complicated controls are frustrating and it's hard to see out. When it's running, the gasoline engine has an unrefined roar. And the Karma's heavy weight affects agility and performance, as the Karma lacks the oomph you expect," said Jake Fisher, Director, Consumer Reports Auto Test Center.

The magazine was very critical of the Karma. "Once the battery is depleted, a raspy GM-supplied turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine kicks in to generate electricity for longer trips. Fuel economy when running only on premium gasoline is an unimpressive 22 mpg," they wrote.

Fisker suffered a setback when Consumer Reports bought a Fisker and it died soon after on the test track. In March, Fisker's battery supplier, A123, agreed to replace about 600 batteries in Karma sedans — including the Consumer Reports vehicle — at a cost of $55 million after it said it found manufacturing flaws.

"But CR's engineers have continued to encounter disconcerting intermittent glitches related to the gauges, warning lights, power windows and radio," the magazine said.

The magazine praised the Acura over the Buick. "With better gas mileage and a more spacious interior, the ILX edged out the Verano in CR's tests," the magazine said. "The Buick Verano is based on the Chevrolet Cruze. Its library-quiet cabin is easily the car'shigh point. Like the Acura, handling is responsive but isn't sporty, with overly light steering. The interior is snug, with a tight back seat, and the center dashboard is cluttered."

Of the cars tested, only the ILX and the JX are recommended. The Escape is too new for Consumer Reports have enough reliability data to rate it, the Karma scored too low to be recommended, the Verano has been unreliable in its first year.

WHAT’S GOING ON at the Nissan, Honda Dealerships? Multi-million Dollar Construction Projects at Both

Recently, both University Nissan on U.S. 421 and High Country Honda on Blowing Rock Road in Boone began construction on new facilities with multi-million dollar price tags.

According to Fred Vick, superintendent of the Nissan job site with Choate Construction, work began back in February but the building was not started until July. The new facility is located directly beside of the current dealership and Vick said the project is costing $3.8 million.

Vick also said there have been some issues due to the site being so close to the landfill. It is considered a brownfield site due to water runoff but Vick said the water has been testing clean. Additionally, there are regulations regarding grading.

“We can’t remove dirt from this site. We have to balance the cutting field and that has been a little tricky,” said Vick.

Chris Welborne, owner of University Nissan, said the age and size of their current facility, as well as having to pay rent, was a deciding factor in the decision to build a new building for the dealership. University Nissan will be the owner of the new facility.

Welborne said there was a lot of “wasted space” and added, “It’s an old building and it’s not very accommodating in the back.”

He said the new facility will be smaller and much more efficient. It will also be a “green” building that goes along with Nissan’s new “N” Ready facilities that support energy efficiency. Nissan provided incentives to University Nissan to construct the new facility.

Vick said everything was going smoothly according to the projected timeline and the facility should be complete by around mid-November of this year.

“Everybody is excited and ready to be in a nice new, warm building,” said Welborne.

Work began on the new High Country Honda facility last month and it is expected to be completed by late-March or early-April 2013. Photo by Paul T. Choate

High Country Honda is taking a different route with their construction, building a considerably larger facility than their current one that will come in at 19,000-square-feet.

According to Mark Gray, High Country Honda sales manager, the new facility will have a larger service and sales department with more room to work and more space for customers. Though he could not provide an exact figure, he said the project had a price tag in excess of $2 million.

“We’re completely remodeling and renovating and it’s going to be 90 percent new,” said Gray. “Everything is going to be modern and up to date. We’re making a huge investment in the community and we’re hoping the community will still continue to support us.”

A banner on the old building reads “Open For Business” letting people know that, despite the construction, High Country Honda is still doing business. Photo by Paul T. Choate

David Ledford, superintendent of the Honda job site with J.A. Street and Associates, said paperwork began on the project about four months ago and the builders broke ground last month. They are anticipating a completion date of late-March to early-April 2013. Ledford also added that, due to the unpredictable weather in the High Country, they have already planned for setbacks due to snow.

“We’re trying to get everything under roof as we can and then we can close it off and work inside,” he said.

Gray said there are high expectations for the new facility once it is complete next spring.

“It’s going to be pretty awesome,” he said.

University Nissan is located at 2462 U.S. 421, Boone. High Country Honda is located at 1440 Blowing Rock Road, Boone.

Foot over-bridge to ease Hero Honda Chowk chaos

GURGAON: The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is planning to build a foot over-bridge (FOB) at Hero Honda Chowk, a choke point on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

In a recent meeting between the HUDA and the NHAI, the ways to decongest Hero Honda Chowk and provide safe path for pedestrians were discussed.

"The FOB at the busy crossing is needed for safety of pedestrians. We are planning to design the FOB in such a manner that it can also be used by two-wheelers," said Praveen Kumar, HUDA administrator.

Being in a low-lying area, this crossing is flooded throughout the monsoon due to poor sewage system. Many pedestrians get injured while trying to cross the high-speed road. "The FOB will help in decongesting the crossing as it will take away load of pedestrians and cyclists from the road," said Kumar.

The HUDA has finalized specification of the bridge - it will be 5 metre wide, large enough to accommodate both pedestrians and two-wheelers. "This crossing witnesses large number of accident because of the high speed traffic. The FOB will ensure seamless movement of the people and two wheelers," said Kumar.

In the first half of this year, the stretch between Delhi and Kherki Daula toll plaza witnessed 27 accident deaths including 15 pedestrians. The traffic police have also pointed out that the Hero Honda Chowk is among the most dangerous crossings for pedestrians in the city.

HUDA officials said the work of building the FOB will be given to private contractor within next two months. The administration is also planning to build an FOB near HUDA City Centre metro station.

New Honda Civic launched in Pakistan

Pakistan has now witnessed the launch of the nex-gen Civic after the new Honda CR-V was launched in the country. In India Honda is paying more attention towards Honda Brio, Honda City and other high-selling models. The new Civic has been launched at a price of about Rs.11.25 lakh to Rs.13.25 lakh. The car has experienced several cosmetic changes and the powertrain remains the same 1.8 liter i-VTEC engine. The engine will be delivering about 141bhp of power and comes coupled with either 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.

Design of the new Civic looks more like the City with similar front fascia with chrome inserts on the grills and sleek headlights with the HID bulbs. If you see the rear portion, it looks more like Honda Accord, with swept back tail lamps.

The dashboard has been redesigned and the steering wheel comes equipped with cruise control and volume control systems. The LCD display system is now bigger with additional functions.

Honda: Small is a big earner

Honda, Japan's third- biggest carmaker, plans to double sales in the next five years, driven by demand for small cars such as the Fit compact and new models in emerging markets including China and India.

Honda is aiming to sell six million vehicles annually by March 2017, up from 3.1 million last fiscal year, said President Takanobu Ito.

The maker of the Accord sedan will introduce 10 new and refreshed models in China by 2016, and a diesel car in India in the year ending March 2014.

"To reach sales of six million units, our Fit compact will be very important and be the leader in volume sales," said Ito at a briefing at the Tokyo-based automaker's headquarters.

"In terms of volume sales, our Brio compact, which we expect to expand sales of in emerging markets, will be the next biggest."

Honda, recovering from last year's natural disasters that hobbled supply chains in Japan and Thailand, is banking on a broadened lineup to bolster sales in emerging markets. The company is also counting on lower priced compact models, such as the Fit, to support sales in Japan as government subsidies come to an end.

"The target seems feasible, and looks like a target that will match global growth," said Satoru Takada, a Tokyo-based auto analyst at Toward the Infinite World Inc, a securities research company. "It also shows that small vehicles will be Honda's focus."

Global sales of passenger vehicles, excluding trucks and buses, will climb to 100.3 million units in 2017, a 27 per cent increase from this year, according to estimates by industry researcher IHS Automotive.

Honda will build the new Fit, its best seller in Japan this year, and another compact model at a Mexico factory slated to open in the spring of 2014, Ito said.

The company will introduce a new sports car in Japan in 2013 and redesigned versions of its luxury Acura brand in the next three years.

Ito said Honda hasn't fully recovered in China, where it reopened factories after anti-Japan protests eased. There are still safety concerns and problems with parts procurement, he said, without being more specific.

The automaker's plans for the world's largest vehicle market remain unchanged, said Ito.

Angry mobs attacked dealerships and smashed Japanese cars in Chinese cities after tensions between China and Japan flared up over ownership of a group of islands. A Honda Civic was set ablaze in front of a dealership in Shanghai on September 13.

Honda targets expanding deliveries of motorcycles to 25 million units by March 2017 from 15 million in the period ended March this year, Ito said.

The world's largest motorcycle maker, which is developing a super sports bike, plans to produce large two-wheelers in Japan next year for sale to North America, and strengthen sales in Brazil, he said.

Honda in New Zealand has struggled in the wake of Japan's dual disasters and Taiwan's flooding, with inventory availability a particular problem. It has now come out of that difficult period and released the new CRV people mover and the Civic Euro Hatch.

GM, Honda, Maruti to hike car prices from October 1

New Delhi: General Motors (India) on Thursday said it will increase the prices of all its models from October 1 to offset the impact of rising input costs and currency fluctuation.

"The details, such as quantum of hike, are still being evaluated but we have decided to increase the prices of all our models from October 1 due to high input costs, currency fluctuation and freight costs," General Motors India Vice President P Balendran told PTI.

The company sells a range of models starting from entry level small car Spark to the high-end sports utility vehicle Captiva in the Indian market. The prices of the company's vehicles start at Rs. 2.85 lakh for Spark and go up to Rs. 24.6 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the Captiva.

General Motors India's move comes three days after Honda Cars India and Maruti Suzuki announcing plans to increase prices of their respective products.

Both Honda and Maruti had also cited rising input costs and impact of adverse currency movements as the reasons for the price hike.

Honda Cars India will raise the prices of its three models -- Brio, Jazz and City -- by up to 2.6 per cent with effect from October 1.

Similarly, the country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India had also said it would hike the prices of its vehicles during the period, and that it was working out the details.

Honda: It Starts With You -- Big Hair

To launch the all new Accord, RPA and Honda decide to focus on the things that make its drivers human. The campaign features a series of striking print ads shot by Tony D'Orio and Toshi Oku featuring "difficulties" of the human condition imparted by a bee, and hair that has definitely benefited from that volumizing shampoo, among other things. Those are juxtaposed alongside the feature of the new car that can address it-- blind spot display, or lane departure warning, for example. The point being, that the new Accord is made for real people's problems, thus the campaign tag "It Starts With You."

"When we we looked at the new Accord and all its features and improvements it seemed to be built with a real understanding of the driver," said Jason Sperling, senior vice president and group creative director at RPA. "And not just their normal human inclinations, but something more insightful--who they are, their personal concerns, their horrid commutes, their relationships, their interests, their stresses and the adverse effects they have on their daily lives. It's through knowing them more personally that Honda has created a more intuitive, intelligent car."

The campaign also includes Honda's first 90-second spot and a 30 second commercial, both directed by Stacy Wall at Imperial Woodpecker. The films follow a similar tack as the print effort, acknowledging the fallibility of its customers.

2012 Paris: 2013 Honda CR-Z gets more power, S+ button

What you see here is the revised and somewhat facelifted Honda CR-Z Hybrid hatchback. Making its debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show today, the new 2013 Honda CR-Z gets a range of upgrades with a focus on style and performance.

Look closely and you’ll see some minor changes to the exterior and the interior. The front bumper, grille, headlamp have all been revised along with the addition of 17-inch alloy wheels and two new exterior colors including Energetic Yellow and Aurora Violet. The interior was updated with new color schemes and door casings that improve on storage.

Honda says that the 1.5 liter engine in the CR-Z has been improved to produce more power – up from 112-hp to 119-hp. Along with the improvement to the electric-motor, total output of the 2013 CR-Z now comes in at 135-hp. 0 to 62 mph takes 9.0 seconds (from 9.7) with a top speed of 124 mph. Fuel-economy was not compromised.

Honda has also introduced something called Plus Sport (S+).

“If the battery is more than 50 per cent charged, the driver can activate this system using the S+ button on the steering wheel,” Honda said in a statement. “When the accelerator is pressed the electric boost begins, delivering increased acceleration for up to ten seconds. A flashing gauge on the dashboard indicates when the system is active. S+ can be used in ECON, Normal or Sport modes.”

                              Sales start Jan. 2013.

The Car Coach: The 2012 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD

The 2012 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD is the complete package, full of everything you could want or need. Lauren Fix, the Car Coach, brings you a closer look.

                              Model - 2012 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD
                              MPG - 22/30 25 mpg combined
Engine - 2.4L engine with 185 hp riding on 17-inch alloy wheels
                              Transmissions: 5-speed automatic
                              Price - starts at $29,995

The 2012 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD is completely redesigned for 2012. It has more standard features, better fuel economy ratings, an updated power train and better storage than before.

The CR-V has real-time All-Wheel Drive and our test vehicle was so well loaded with standard features that there were no options added or needed. Navigation is standard on this model (optional on other models) as well as rearview camera, Pandora Internet radio interface, Bluetooth and voice text messaging, which functioned as promised.

The interior cabin is one of the most spacious and comfortable in the class, and has an impressively large, easy-to-load and easy-to-organize cargo area. The new center console stretches from the back of the front seats to the dashboard.

The CR-V has a lot of changes both inside and out. Not only does it have a redesigned exterior, but also the engine received mechanical updates to increase horsepower and fuel economy ratings. The transmission is still a five-speed automatic.

                              Competes with:
                              •Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring
                              •Toyota RAV4 EV
                              •Kia Sorrento EX
                              •Acura RDX
                              •Ford Escape
                              •Nissan Murano

•Lots of room for passengers and cargo
                              •Plenty of hi-tech and family-friendly features
                              •Easy to drive

•Acceleration is a little slow from a start
                              •Needs a power lift gate

The 2012 Honda CR-V EX-L AWD is an affordable SUV that offers plenty of car for the money, flexible storage and makes a great family vehicle.

Honda's 2012 Paris motor show presentation leaned heavily on its newly developed i-DTEC diesel engines, although the hybrid CR-Z received some notable changes, as well.

Honda took the opportunity to reveal the redesigned CR-V crossover to European audiences. While that vehicle isn't exactly newsworthy on this side of the Atlantic, the engine options available overseas are interesting. Buyers will choose between a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, a 2.2-liter i-DTEC diesel or, on the two-wheel drive CR-V, a lightweight, turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel. That 1.6-liter engine will make an appearance under the hood of the Civic hatchback, as well.

The efficient 1.6-liter diesel may garner the attention of the Europeans, but North American enthusiasts will be more interested in the 2013 Honda CR-Z Hybrid. Beyond a revised front bumper and grille, the 2013 CR-Z features an upgraded powertrain: The 1.5-liter gasoline engine is tweaked slightly and—more significantly—the car's battery has been switched from a nickel-metal hydride pack to a lithium-ion version. That change yields a battery power increase from 10 kW to 15 kW.

Taking things fully on-grid is the two-seat all-electric EV-ster, which also is on display. That concept broke cover last year at the Tokyo motor show. Will it ever see production? We're probably more likely to get an i-DTEC Civic in America than we are to see the EV-ster on dealer lots anytime soon.

The 2012 Paris motor show—or Mondail de l'Automobile, as it is officially known––will take place Sept. 27 through Oct. 14. It occurs every two years, alternating with the Frankfurt motor show in Germany. Paris is a showcase for the latest in design, but automakers will also be showing off their latest concept cars, green cars and supercars.

A rather special Honda Odyssey police car, seen on a parking lot in Beijing. Police in the capital usually doesn’t use Odysseys to sleep in, they all drive cheap Elantra’s and such. Whatever officer has it must be a bit careful now with all these anti-Japanese car bashing riots going on! The Odyssey is made in China by the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture, the facelifted car was launched late last month.

The facelifted Honda Accord has been launched on the Chinese car market. Price starts at 202.800 yuan and ends at 236.800 yuan. The facelift includes a new grille, new head lights, new rear lights and new bumpers. The Accord is made in China by the Guangzhou-Honda joint venture.

The facelifted Honda Accord will continue with the 2.0 and 2.4 four-cylinders, the 3.5 V6 has sadly been deleted. New for the Accord is a seven-speed tiptronic transmission with flappy paddles, it comes only with the 2.4. The Accord competes with fine cars such as the Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Magotan, Nissan Teana and Mazda 6.

2012 Honda Civic LX: Just plain good

Sex sells. It also dupes. When duped, you erroneously assess things, especially those, such as cars, requiring some kind of intelligent commitment. I was duped. I made a dumb mistake back in June 2011 when I opined in this space that the 2012 Honda Civic HF sedan was symptomatic of Honda’s slip from grace in the small-car market.

Here’s my recant, as upfront and as clear as I can make it: The Honda Civic is still the one.
I’ve come to that conclusion after 350 mostly commuter miles in a rented 2012 Honda Civic LX sedan — a close-to-basic front-wheel-drive compact sedan outfitted with an optional five-speed automatic transmission.
In truth, I wanted to rent something snazzier — a Kia Optima or Hyundai Sonata, a Chevrolet Cruze or Ford Focus, a new Dodge Dart if possible, or a Volkswagen Jetta TDi — an automobile “with personality.”
Having months ago relegated the Honda Civic to the “also-ran” files of my automotive mind, I did not consider a Civic. But a Civic LX sedan, replete with cloth seats and industrial-grade vinyl, was all that remained in my weekly rental price range (up to $225) on a Northern Virginia Enterprise Rent-a-Car lot.
I took the deal. I’m glad I did. It turned out to be what I needed to regain perspective.
Several months before driving the deliberately pedestrian Civic HF, I had been stunned by all of the neat stuff global automobile companies were installing in their little cars. These welcome changes included super-attractive styling inside and out. Finally, I thought, automobile manufacturers have learned that “compact” and “ugly” don’t mean the same thing.
It was a fair assessment carried too far, one that ignored the inherent, long-lasting beauty of one of the world’s best-selling small cars, the Honda Civic. In comparison with its sexier rivals, the 2012 Civic HF I drove in the summer of 2011 was dowdy. I was disappointed, and in my disappointment I ignored the Civic HF’s primary reason for being — to deliver its namesake “high fuel” economy, and to do so using the simplest styling and inexpensive but still high-quality materials.
The 2012 Honda Civic LX sedan rented a year later also came with lots of plastic — genuine, plastic-is-plastic plastic that did little to lift the spirits, but made it exceptionally easy to lift stains and smudges with a little soap and water. The cloth seats were equally easy to clean. The entire interior, in fact, was expressly designed for hard use and easy maintenance.
The upshot: After a bit more than 17,000 miles on the road and 10 months’ use before coming into my hands, the interior of the rented 2012 Honda Civic LX still looked and felt new. That is the kind of stuff that high resale values are made of.
Most of us don’t rent compact economy cars to set speed records. I rented the 2012 Civic LX to complete several regional errands before taking off this week for the Paris Auto Show. I was pleasantly surprised. In several runs up and down Interstate 66 in Virginia, the Civic LX’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine (140 horsepower, 128 foot-pounds of torque) performed beautifully — very little downshifting, no asthmatic behavior in higher elevations, enough passing power when needed, and decent fuel economy at 28 miles per gallon in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.
It was an economic blessing that the rented Civic LX was designed to do its best work on regular-grade gasoline.
The more I drove that car, the more I loved it, and the more I understood why so many people love the Honda Civic even though, I still maintain, it has been surpassed by so many rivals in exterior and interior styling.
Even after having been battered by multiple drivers over more than 17,000 miles, the Civic LX worked flawlessly. Fit and finish remained impressive — no shakes, no rattles and only one missing part (a piece of sound-deadening, wind-blocking rubber absent from under the right side of the hood). The Civic LX was a cinch to maneuver and park in tight urban traffic. It even did well over the many speed bumps — meeting them at posted speeds without rattling the nerves of driver or passengers — that seem to abound in affluent Northern Virginia neighborhoods.
Lastly, there was this: Like it or not, and I’m still trying to decide, the quality of today’s cars is determined almost as much by the quality of their infotainment/communication systems as by anything else. In that regard, Honda’s patented i-MID (intelligent Multi-Information Display) system is at the top of its class. It is intuitive, easy-to-use and truly informative — keeping the driver aware of everything going on with the car and the world through which it is moving.
The rented Honda Civic LX did not come with the optional onboard navigation system and backup camera. But the Enterprise people included a Garmin portable navigation system for a small fee. That worked perfectly. I love backup cameras and think they will become standard safety equipment soon. But getting out and checking around the car before taking off, and checking the rear-view mirror before backing out, worked well, too.

Tech Feature Friday: 2012 Honda Odyssey Big-Screen Rear Entertainment System Falls Short

The 16.2-inch screen displays 2 programs at once, but it doesn’t allow access to every entertainment source in the vehicle.

The Ultrawide Rear Entertainment System available in the 2012 Honda Odyssey has a 16.2-inch screen that can display two video programs at once, side-by-side, so passengers in the backseat don’t have to fight over what to watch. A DVD loaded into an in-dash player in the front of the van can be displayed on one side of the screen, while video programming from an external source such as a portable DVD player plugged into auxiliary A/V inputs in the rear of the van can be shown on the other side. The Odyssey is the only vehicle with an HDMI input for connecting a portable Blu-ray player or other high-definition source.

Like other rear-entertainment systems, it comes with two pairs of dual-channel wireless headphones that allow passengers to listen to two separate programs. Next to the aux A/V inputs are three jacks to plug in wired headphones. Using the system remote control and wireless headphones, back-seat passengers can also access and listen to other “front” audio sources in the vehicle such as the AM, FM or satellite radio, as well as music burned to an in-dash hard drive from CD.

But unlike the most versatile rear-seat entertainment systems, the big-screen, HD-capable one in the Honda Odyssey allows users to access only one front audio source while viewing a video source, and cuts them off from the rest.

By contrast, Chrysler’s rear-entertainment system lets back-seat passengers access and control every audio source available in the vehicle, except the one the driver has chosen, via the remote and listen to it over wireless headphones. While Chrysler systems won’t show two video sources on one screen -- only the Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna can do that -- the Chrysler system does split a smaller screen into two sections.

You can show a video program on DVD or an external video source while the other allows full access to any other source in the vehicle: radio, CD, a hard drive or even a connected portable device. A two-screen system is also available in Chrysler vehicles, and in the rebadged Volkswagen Routan, as shown below.

While this may seem like overkill, if you’re a parent on a long drive and want to keep kids pacified in the back seat -- especially older ones who’ll want to pick their own entertainment, and if you definitely don’t want to listen to their music -- the more multi-featured Chrysler system wins hands-down since it lets them be self-sufficient. And it gives those in the front seats more peace and quiet.

The Honda Odyssey's system gets the big picture and its HDMI input is cutting-edge, but it also cuts off back-seat passengers from more than half of their entertainment options.
