Honda Begins Construction of New Auto Plant in Indonesia

Honda's automobile manufacturing and sales joint venture in Indonesia, today held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of the construction of its new automobile production plant in Karawang Industrial Park in a suburb of Jakarta. The ceremony was attended by high ranking official from the Ministry of Industry of Indonesia, as well as Takanobu Ito, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. president & CEO.

With annual production capacity of 120,000 units, the new auto plant is scheduled to begin production in 2014 in order to continue meeting demands in the rapidly growing automobile market in Indonesia. In addition to BRIO, which was developed especially for Asian markets, HPM is planning to produce a new MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) model at the new plant. Designed based on BRIO, the new model will enhance the Honda lineup of MPV models which account for the majority of passenger vehicle sales in Indonesia.

The new plant, an investment of approximately 3.1 trillion Indonesian rupiah (approximately 27 billion yen), will employ approximately 2,000 associates at the start of production. Combined with the current capacity of 60,000 units, HPM's annual production capacity will total 180,000 units.

Moreover, HPM will strengthen the local product development function, establish a highly efficient production system, and increase local content to approximately 80% from the current level of approximately 50%. Through these efforts, HPM will provide high-quality products to its customers with speed and affordability.

HPM is planning to begin sales of BRIO before the end of 2012 by importing the model from Thailand. HPM will then begin local production of an Indonesian version of the model at the existing plant before the end of 2013, with BRIO production to be transferred to the new plant when it becomes operational in 2014.

Statement by Takanobu Ito/ President and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.: "Indonesia became the largest automobile market among ASEAN countries last year. We believe this new factory will contribute positively to the general industry and economy in Indonesia, while creating new working opportunities for people here. Concurrent with the launching of BRIO and other new products, we will continue the effort to maximize the joy of our customers, with speed, affordability and low CO2 emissions."

2012 Honda Civic Leads Compact Sales in May, Toyota Corolla a Close Second

The compact sales race saw more jockeying for the lead in the month of May. This time it was the 2012 Honda Civic that beat out the Toyota Corolla for the sales crown, with the Ford Focus coming in a distant third place to the Japanese heavyweights.

The Honda Civic earned its first place slot with 33,490 sales in May 2012, an 82.6 percent year-over-year increase over May 2011, which was affected by production supply issues caused by last year’s earthquake in Japan. The sales boost helped the Civic pad its year-to-date stats, which stand at 135,082 through the end of May.

2012 Honda Civic Leads Compact Sales in May, Toyota Corolla a Close Second imageThough the Toyota Corolla might be one of the most dated vehicles in its class, it only gave up last month’s first place finish for a very respectable second. Toyota moved 31,847 Corollas last month, bringing its year-to-date total to 125,079.

The Ford Focus, with 24,769 sales, again placed third. Focus sales remained up, with an 11.1-percent increase versus last year, and a year-to-date total of 112,416. The Chevrolet Cruze still sits solidly in fourth place with the Hyundai Elantra nipping at its heels. Chevy managed to sell 19,613 Cruzes last month, a 13.6-percent decrease, while Hyundai sold 18,877 Elantras, a 5.6-percent decrease.

The Volkswagen Jetta and Mazda3 are at the bottom of our top 7 chart. The Jetta remains in sixth place with 12,962 sales for the month, and 60,921 vehicles sold for the year. Mazda sold only 8474 Mazda3s last month, bringing its year-to-date total to 50,692.

Zeigler Auto Group rounds out expansion spurt with dedication of Honda dealership in Kalamazoo (with video)

KALAMAZOO, MI. – When the Harold Zeigler Automotive Group decided to undertake seven major expansion projects in November of 2010, the economy had not yet turned for the better, and people weren’t actually buying cars in droves.
But Aaron and Harold Zeigler, the president and chairman of the auto group were optimistic about the turnaround and pushed ahead with plans that grow their holdings, which then included 32 automotive franchises in 11 locations with about 650 workers.
About 18 months later, their organization completed the last of the seven projects, a new 26,000-square-foot Honda franchise just west of its Lincoln, BMW and Mitsubishi location at 4201 Stadium Drive, and celebrated Monday with a gathering of several hundred area business people, employees, construction partners and civic leaders.

“We created well over 200 jobs,” Aaron Zeigler said at Monday’s gathering. “That brings us now to 15 locations and 39 franchises as an organization. And we’ve now built 13 new buildings in the last nine years, which makes us a contractor’s best friend.”
The business has grown its staff – which includes dealerships from here to suburban Chicago – to about 850 people. That includes its local staff, which has grown from about 275 people to 400.
“People who are going to change this economy, who are going to create the path for our ship to go forward, and who are going to set that course, are the people in this room,” Ron Kitchen, chief executive officer of regional economic development organization Southwest Michigan First, told the gathering. “They are the people who everyday go to work and the companies that invest here.”

He thanked the auto group for maintaining its corporate headquarters here and said, “They stepped up and said we believe in this community, we believe in the capacity of the people that are here. And more importantly, we believe in our customers and we believe they’ll support investments that look like these.”
“When the Zeiglers acquired the Honda franchise in 2010, certainly the economy hadn’t recovered,” said Honda’s top U.S. executive John Mendel. “But they put a lot of trust and confidence in the Honda brand and they do an excellent job with everything they touch.”
Torrence, Calif.-based Mendel said he traveled here because his relationship with Harold Zeigler, Aaron’s father, dates back about 30 years, when Mendel worked for Ford Motor Co.
The executive vice president of automotive sales for American Honda Motor Co. said he knows Honda has a strong partner here with the Zeiglers.
In turn, Aaron Zeigler said Honda builds world-class cars and his dealership is honored to represent the brand. Zeigler Auto Group completed its acquisition of Kalamazoo area Honda franchise rights from M&M Motor Mall on Dec. 15.
          The Zeigler projects:
          • It upgraded a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram dealership it bought in the suburban Chicago community of Schaumburg , Ill., about four years ago.
          • It established a new Fiat dealership in Schaumburg.
          • It built a 35,000-square-foot Chrysler, Dodge and Ram dealership in Downers Grove, Ill.
          • It acquired, then demolished the former Ground Round restaurant just east of the Zeiglers’ Stadium Drive location to make way for a new Chrysler, Dodge and Ram dealership. That dealership opened in December.
          • Zeigler has bought the Honda franchise in Kalamazoo. And it is in the throes of building a 26,000-square-foot building to house it on Stadium Drive. That is to be completed in April and about 70 employees will be based there.
          • It acquired Woodfield Chevrolet in Schaumburg and renovated its facilities.
          • It acquired the Honda franchise rights in Kalamazoo and officially opened Honda Zeigler on Monday.

In addition, these Honda Brio & City customers will get an extended warranty for 3rd & 4th year and a 4 year Road Side Assistance cover.

Honda puts hybrid cars on hold

As Honda begins construction of a second factory in Indonesia on Monday, its executives say the giant Japanese carmaker has no immediate plans to produce hybrid cars in Indonesia even as the government pushes for fuel- and environmentally-friendly cars.

“It would be difficult to produce hybrid cars in Indonesia , as we need to invest in the technology first,” Honda Prospect Motor (HPM) marketing director Jonfis Fandy said at the ground-breaking ceremony for Honda’s newest plant in Karawang, east of Jakarta.

The Indonesian market was not ready for hybrid cars due to a lack of knowledge about the technology, he said, adding that work was needed to inform the public about how hybrid cars operated and how they could benefit from them.

For hybrid cars to truly contribute to Indonesia ’s energy conservation efforts, they had to be available in both the low and high ends of the market, he said. “How much [energy] can we realistically save if hybrid cars are only available for high-end users which make up 30 percent of the automobile market here?” he asked rhetorically.

Honda introduced the Honda Civic Hybrid in Indonesia in 2007 but pulled it off the market because of lack of interest. Honda is currently building a plant in Thailand to produce Jazz Hybrids and the first cars will roll out in 2013.

Industry Minister MS Hidayat said on Monday that he would call on all carmakers in Indonesia, including Toyota and Honda, to push them to start producing hybrid cars, detik.com reported. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last month said the government planned to offer various incentives to carmakers to make them affordable.

Honda’s second factory in the Mitrakarawang Industrial Area has been earmarked to build the Brio at the lower end of Honda’s range. The plant will produce the hatchback version, which is already sold in India and Thailand, and the newer MPV model, which will be launched in 2014.

Honda’s operation in Indonesia is a joint venture between Honda Motor Co. of Japan and PT Prospect Motor of Indonesia. The original plant, opposite the new factory, produces Jazz, CR-V and Freed models. Once completed in 2014, the second plant will triple Honda’s production capacity in Indonesia to 180,000 cars per year from 60,000.

“Indonesia is an important market for Honda,” Takanobu Ito, the CEO of Honda Motor Co., said at the ground-breaking ceremony. “With a growing market and more conducive environment for economic growth, this country has a lot of potential.”

Ito said the Indonesian operation was one of Honda’s strongest both in terms of sales and production in the Asia-Oceania region and it topped sales among Southeast Asian markets last year.

Honda has chosen Indonesia as one of its production hubs in Asia, along with India and Thailand. It plans to use more materials from local suppliers, adding a further 45 local suppliers to its current 85.

The new factory will be built by construction company PT Takenaka Indonesia. (han)

Honda Breaks Ground On Second Indonesian Manufacturing Plant

Honda Prospect Motor, the sole local distributor and assembler for the Japanese automaker, began construction on Monday on its second manufacturing plant, part of its effort to expand into Indonesia’s low-cost car market.

Honda has invested Rp 3.1 trillion ($329 million) for the plant, located in Karawang, West Java. The company expects it to start production by early 2014. The plant is expected to triple Honda’s local production capacity to 180,000 cars a year.

Takanobu Ito, chief executive officer of Honda Motor, which owns 51 percent of Honda Prospect Motor, said that aside from producing flagship Honda cars such as the Jazz, CR-V and Freed, the new plant would also produce low-cost models, which account for the majority of Indonesian car sales.

“The plan is that it will produce new models such as the Honda Brio,” Ito told reporters during a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday.

Ito did not provide a production target or any pricing information for the Brio, which is sold for 399,000 to 500,000 baht ($13,000 to $16,000) in Thailand.

Jonfis Fandy, HPM’s marketing and after-sales service director, said the company would introduce a five-seat Brio imported from Thailand later this month with a selling price of under Rp 200 million.

Jonfis also said Honda planned to produce the Brio MPV, a larger version of the car with seven seats, when the plant starts production. He said the Brio MPV price would not top Rp 200 million.

Ito said, “With the automotive market growing and conducive economic conditions, this country holds big potential for the automotive industry.”

Indonesians bought a record 894,180 vehicles last year — a 17 percent increase from 2010, according to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo). Sales growth is expected to slow to around 5 percent this year, but carmakers remain upbeat that Indonesia will overtake Thailand as the biggest auto market in Southeast Asia.

Karawang, around 75 kilometers east of Jakarta, is home to many of the country’s car and motorcycle manufacturing plants and shoe factories.

            Honda honors two area companies

Two Dayton-area companies were honored as being among Honda’s top maintenance, repair and operational (MRO) suppliers.
Dayton’s Becker Electrical Supply received a 2012 Honda MRO Supplier Special Recognition Award, as did Ferguson Construction Co., based in Sidney, Honda said.
“MRO suppliers provide Honda plants with a wide range of goods and services that support the manufacturing of automobiles and other products in North America,” Honda said in its announcement Tuesday. “Representing local as well as national companies, many have grown with Honda’s expanding manufacturing base in the United States, including the establishment of additional operations near new Honda plants.”
Honda’s suppliers of parts and materials were honored separately in April.
Honda’s MRO supplier purchasing totaled $737 million for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2012, Honda said. That’s up from $500 million in the previous fiscal year, due primarily to the start of a second shift of auto production at a Indiana plant, the company said.
The automaker has more than 13,000 Ohio workers, including about 1,300 Miami Valley residents who commute to Honda plants from the Dayton area.

Design Student Envisions New Honda S2000 Roadster for 2020

Back in the 1995, when Honda was still producing and developing cars that drivers liked to drive, the automaker displayed a concept model called the SSM (for Sports Study Model) at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Three years later, Honda revealed the production model of that concept named the S2000 in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

The rear-wheel drive roadster with the manically revving 240hp (243PS) F20C 2.0-liter 4-cylinder DOHC-VTEC engine went on sale in 1999 and remained in production for a decade selling more than 112,000 units worldwide.

We've heard many rumors about a replacement for the S2000, but unfortunately, nothing concrete. Naturally, design students are not bound by any production plans and are free to visualize their ideas like Michael Mcgee who took part in a Honda sponsored project for the creation of an S2000 for the year 2020.

Mcgee says of his concept model:

"My design is classic and advanced simultaneously. It uses simple surfacing but an innovative frame structure and function to balance a raw, classic sports car attitude with an advanced concept that pushes into the future. The inspiration is an R/C car, shown by the structure design and the emphasis on lightness and plastics. The yellow body sides of the car can be exchanged for other styles and colors based on the customers wants. These body sides also function as large doors."

On Monday, June 4th, Honda Prospect Motor began construction of the second plant in order to expand Indonesia’s low-cost car market. Until now the company invested Rp 3.1 trillion ($329 million) in this plant which is expected to begin production in 2014.

Chief executive officer of Honda Motor, Takanobu Ito, owns 51% of Honda Prospect Motor, and said that the plant will produce cars under Honda’s flagship, such as CR-V, Freed and Jazz, but also low-cost models accounting for the majority of Indonesia car sales. Later this month Honda will introduce to Thailand the five-seat Brio, with a price under Rp 200 million. When production starts at this new plant, Honda also aims at producing a seven-seat version of this model.

Ito said, “With the automotive market growing and conducive economic conditions, this country holds big potential for the automotive industry.”

In 2011 Indonesia bought a record 894,180 cars, up 17% from 2010, but this year is expected to fall 5%. Nevertheless, Indonesia is expected to overtake Thailand as the biggest auto market in Southeast Asia.

              Honda scores with twin launch

Soccer moms and large families now have reason to celebrate Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. has just launched the latest versions of the Pilot SUV and Odyssey Minivan. Honda is throwing caution to the wind and banking on the strong showing of its Jazz and City variants in the sales race to complement its vehicle line-up. Following the launch of the new City last January, the all-new Civic and Jazz Special Edition in February, and the CR-V in April, HCPI aims to strengthen Honda’s return to the Philippine automotive market, “So far this year, we have seen the recovery of the Philippine market, with our monthly sales from February exceeding the same period last year. With a favorable economy, we see further potential for growth,” states Tatsuya Natsume, president—GM of HCPI.
Since the introduction of the Pilot and Odyssey in the United States, each model has received numerous awards and recognitions from various institutions due to its outstanding roominess, versatility, efficiency, and safety.
When it debuted in 2003, the Pilot defined the emerging crossover SUV market. It hit the spot among consumers due to its fuel efficient, yet upbeat V6 engine, good driving dynamics, comfort, spaciousness and seating capacity. Now that the Crossover SUV market is full to the brim with similarly designed Crossover SUV’s, Honda returned with a vengeance with a totally redesigned Pilot for this year. According to Natsume, this SUV was developed with the concept of “Intelligent Family Adventure”. “The Pilot that we will launch today is the second generation model that was introduced 2008 and received an extensive upgrade in 2011,” he adds. The latest iteration of the Pilot is more compact, yet equipped with various amenities and boasts of a flexible cargo configuration that enhances the travelling experience both on and off-road.
Since its launch in 1995, the Odyssey has always been the preferred Minivan of most families in the United States. According to Stephen Frey, Principal Engineer/Manager of the Odyssey project Honda USA, “This model was developed with the concept of “Ultimate Family Vehicle”, combining chic new styling, class-leading performance, advance family safety, and ultimate utility,” he says. The exterior of the Odyssey has a modern and sophisticated styling that features the “lightning bolt” side profile that gives it a distinctive identity against competitors with indistinguishable designs. Furthermore, cargo space configurability is improved with the 3rd row Magic Seats that allows it to be tucked away completely or partially.
“We believe that the characteristics of the all-new Odyssey and the Pilot will also be appreciated by the domestic customer base. We have observed Philippine families going out together during weekends and enjoying each other’s company, whether in a mall or in an out-of-town get-away. With the Odyssey and Pilot, these customers will be ensured of an enjoyable travelling experience together with their families,” explains Natsume. Manufactured and imported from the United States, the Odyssey is priced at P2.8M, while the Pilot can be yours for P2.6M.

2012 Scion IQ, 2012 Honda CR-Z: Same Gas Mileage, But Very Different

Traditionally, people shopped for cars based on features, size and body style. For example, if you wanted a mid-size sedan, your test-drive list was likely to be nothing but mid-size sedans.
But with gas mileage becoming the number one priority for new car buyers, cars you wouldn’t expect to compete with one another start to.
Which is why we’ve chosen to pit the 2012 Scion IQ minicar and 2012 Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe against each other. WIth a combined gas mileage of 37 mpg, both cars should cost the same to run, but which is best for you? Read on to find out.

              The basics
The 2012 Honda CR-Z is a two-seat compact hybrid sports coupe inspired by Honda’s iconic CR-X sports coupe from the 1980s.

              2012 Honda CR-Z

it is powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist mild hybrid system and continuously variable transmission or 6-speed manual gearbox. Total hybrid plus engine power output is rated at 122 horsepower.
Meanwhile, the 2012 Scion iQ is a 3+1 minicar built by Toyota to compete in the same market segment as the diminutive 2012 Smart ForTwo.
Capable of accommodating three adults and one child (at a push), the tiny front-wheel drive city car is powered in the U.S. market by a 1.3-liter, 4-cylinder engine, producing 94 horsepower.
Unlike the 2012 Honda CR-Z, it is only available with a CVT drivetrain in the U.S.

With the added benefit of its mild hybrid drivetrain and a few extra horses under the hood, the 2012 Honda CR-Z beats the Scion IQ’s 11.8-second 0-60mph time by 2.6 seconds.
Even with that extra power however, it doesn’t feel as sporty as it could. In fact, the 2012 Honda Civic EX-L, a car we hardly consider sporty, is faster to 60 mph than the CR-Z.
If the faster CR-Z doesn’t feel all that sporty, then neither should the iQ. But like its minicar rival, the 2012 Smart ForTwo, the 2012 Scion IQ has a certain go-kart-like quality that makes it great fun to drive around town.
With very little in front of the driver, the IQ wins when it comes to maneuverability, requiring just 12.9 feet to execute a U-turn.
But take it on the freeway, and the plucky iQ feels much more stable than some of its minicar rivals, even at the upper end of the legal limit.
              2012 Scion iQ - Driven, April 2012

The 2012 Scion iQ and 2012 Honda CR-Z are both marketed to the same Gen X/Gen Y demographic. In everyday use however, the two cars offer very different practicality.
While it is bigger than the tiny iQ, the CR-Z only beats the iQ on legroom by a few inches, while it loses out to the minicar on both headroom and passenger volume.
That’s partly due to the number of seats, of course. While the CR-Z has seating for two, the iQ manages to squeeze in an additional two seats.
But be warned: fill those rear seats up, and the IQ will struggle to hold more than 3.5 cubic feet of cargo. The CR-Z can manage 25.1 cubic feet.

              Which would you choose?

The 2012 Honda CR-Z is the hybrid coupe of choice for those wanting a sporty-looking car that is also great on gas mileage. Have more than one friend however, and its lack of rear seats makes daily use trying.
Add to that a $19,695 base-level sticker price, and the case for the CR-Z looks even less appealing.

              2011 Honda CR-Z

On the other hand, the 2012 Scion iQ, while cute, offers trendy urban motoring with a hybrid-like gas mileage.
With a base-level rice of just $15,995, it wins our head-to-head, but make sure you’re on good terms with your passengers before you offer them a lift: the IQ’s interior can get a little claustrophobic on long trips.
Which of the two cars would you choose? Let us know in the Comments below.

Toyota, Honda top Best Family Cars list
Each automaker has three models honored by Parents magazine and Edmunds.com

In the market for a new family car, but unsure what type of vehicle to buy?

Here’s a good place to start your research: Edmunds.com and Parents magazine announced this week their 15 Best Family Cars for 2012. Toyota and Honda each had three models among the 15 vehicles selected.

For the fifth consecutive year, car experts from both organizations scrutinized hundreds of vehicles focusing on safety and reliability as top priorities. Each car was also judged on performance, interior, exterior and family-friendly features.

Toyota models making the list of 15 cars among five categories were the Prius v, Camry and Sienna. Honda’s recognized models were the Civic Hybrid, CR-V and Odyssey.

“We’re proud to have several Toyota models on the list of best family cars for the fifth year in a row,” said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “Families know they can always depend on Toyota for safety, quality and durability, but they also recognize the importance of the convenience and technology features in our vehicles that help make their lives easier.”

Every car on the list is equipped with antilock brakes, electronic stability control and a minimum of six air bags. Plus, a record 14 vehicles recommended by Parents/Edmunds.com earned a “Top Safety Pick” designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

In addition to test-driving, analyzing, and comparing prices and features, Parents and Edmunds.com — a respected online resource for car buyers — consulted parents who own and drive these vehicles every day.

The Best Family Cars of 2012 feature appears in the July issue of Parents magazine on newsstands Tuesday.

                Kbb.com selects
                Most Comfortable Cars

The expert editors from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, a leading provider of new car and used car information, recently announced the 10 Most Comfortable Cars Under $30,000.

The 10 reasonably priced new vehicles selected feature quiet rides, supportive seating and roomy interiors, among other new-vehicle creature comforts. The majority of the vehicles on the list (six out of 10) hail from American auto manufacturers, while the rest come from Japanese and German competitors.

“Car shoppers don’t have to buy a luxury car to get a very well-equipped, comfortable ride these days,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com. “With a multitude of Americans spending hours in their cars daily between work commutes, carpools and a host of other activities, comfort is king for many when choosing a new vehicle.

“Our kbb.com list of the 10 Most Comfortable New Cars Under $30,000 offers shoppers insight into what we think are the most comfortable, affordable rides worthy of their consideration,” Nerad said.

Here are this year’s 10 Most Comfortable Cars under $30,000. Kbb.com’s editors rank the vehicles in order of their most comfortable favorites.

No. 1: Chrysler 300. It feels right to have a big, rear-drive, American sedan atop this list. The Chrysler 300 is a quiet, comfortable, stylish, well-appointed luxury sedan missing just two things: the snooty badge and the sticker shock. Keyless entry and start, a big 8.4-inch touchscreen and dual-zone auto climate control are all part of the sub-$30,000 package.

No. 2: Chevrolet Malibu. Spacious and refined were two adjectives rarely used to describe the traditional non-luxury sedans of yore. The all-new Chevrolet Malibu aims to break that perception by offering the practicality and affordability of a typical midsize sedan along with a roomy, upscale cockpit and a suspension system capable of taming America’s endless supply of dilapidated asphalt.

No. 3: Volkswagen Passat. Let it be known that ride comfort and superior driving dynamics are not mutually exclusive. We submit the Volkswagen Passat as proof. While satisfying to drive, V-Dub’s mid-size sedan is also adept at absorbing road imperfections, all the while cocooning occupants in a well-appointed interior that features a hugely roomy back seat.

No. 4: Subaru Legacy. While Subaru’s standard all-wheel-drive grips the road, its supportive, well-bolstered seats grip bodies. Add a spacious interior, good visibility and easy-to-navigate controls, and you have a car that has a fine way of putting you at ease no matter what roads you tackle.

No. 5: Honda Odyssey. While virtually any minivan can serve as a capable people mover, the Honda Odyssey delivers a level of comfort that exceeds any minivan in the category.Boasting class-leading interior volume, generous legroom for all rows of seats and a supremely quiet cabin, the Odyssey bolsters its reputation as the minivan parents actually want to drive.

No. 6: Buick Regal. The automaker’s second entry on our list of comfortable cars, the Regal is as smooth and quiet as any Buick should be, but also among the sportiest cars ever to wear the badge. Even the sport-tuned, 270-horsepower GS model qualifies as a bona fide Buick, proving that comfort doesn’t have to be squishy.

No. 7 Toyota Camry. Already a smooth-riding standout, the perennial best-selling car in the country was totally redesigned for 2012 and is now quieter on the highway and nicer inside than ever. It also offers more in-cabin technology, making the new Camry a comfortable choice for more modern buyers.

No. 8: Verano. Buicks are renowned for being quiet and comfortable. With the introduction of the 2012 Verano, the folks at Buick prove they can apply those traits to a compact platform. The Verano coddles its occupants with a hushed cabin and compliant yet controlled ride, an impressive feat considering the car’s sub-$24,000 base price.

No. 9: Chevrolet Cruze. How did a mainstream compact car sneak onto this list? By including an acoustic-laminated windshield, triple-layered door seals and wheel-well liners for a quiet cabin. And supportive front seats matched with perhaps the smoothest highway ride in the segment. For compact comfort, the Chevy Cruze is a big winner.

No. 10: Taurus. With supportive and spacious seating for five, a hushed cabin and a suspension that soaks up potholes, Ford’s full-size sedan is one plush cruiser. The 2013 models get even better isolation from the outside world thanks to additional soundproofing. Optional massaging front seats, meanwhile, can turn traffic into a treat.

The 11kW system will provide a reliable supply of clean energy that should reduce the Aquarium's reliance on conventional electricity

As a founding sponsor of the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA, American Honda has providing Honda solar cell technology in order to help power the Aquarium's new June Keyes Penguin Habitat.

The 11kW system will provide a reliable supply of clean energy that should reduce the Aquarium's reliance on conventional electricity by more than 14000kWhr each year, representing a substantial saving for the nonprofit organization.

The new June Keyes Penguin Habitat was opened to the public on May 17, 2012.

It’s a permanent exhibit that houses Magellanic penguins typically found near the southern tip of South America. Environmental issues are threatening their survival in the wild, so this habitat includes educational exhibit panels and interactive touchscreens where visitors can learn about penguins and why 75% of them are endangered or threatened.

"Some of our penguins were rescued, and by telling their story we hope people will help penguins in the wild by decreasing their carbon emissions, choosing sustainable seafood, reducing pollution, and protecting areas where these penguins breed and forage," said Dr Jerry R. Schubel, Aquarium of the Pacific president.

The exhibit is the first public demonstration of Honda solar panels in the US.

Honda has thin film solar panels installed in 22 of its facilities worldwide – including the company's motorsports engineering facility in Santa Clarita, CA, and a manufacturing plant in Indiana.

The CIGS thin-film solar panels use a film compound of copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS) that require less raw material, energy and related CO2 emissions to manufacture than conventional crystal silicon solar cells.

CIGS panels are substantially thinner than traditional solar panels and enable stable power generation even when in the shade.

Safety agency probes Honda, Toyota crossovers

(Reuters) - Safety regulators said Friday they have opened separate investigations into consumer complaints about possible stability control failures in 2005 Honda Pilot crossover SUV and possible corrosion-related failures of rear suspension arms in Toyota RAV4 crossover SUVs from model years 2006-2008.

This type of investigation is short of a recall of the vehicles, but may lead to one after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration completes its probe.

The Pilot is made by Honda Motor Co and the Rav4 by Toyota Motor Corp.

Pilot U.S. sales in 2012 were up 6 percent to about 45,000 and RAV4 sales were up 16 percent to about 74,000 through May, according to Autodata Corp.

Autobacs Super GT 2012 Round 3: Honda Racing and Team Kunimitsu seeks victory in Sepang

Let’s do a quick recap. The Honda HSV-010 GT is powered by a 3.4 litre naturally aspirated V8 that produces more than 500 PS and more than 392 Nm of torque. Exact figures are very ‘top secret’ stuff. The banshee-like wail of the HSV comes from the exhaust manifold’s 8-4-2-1 layout. The racer measures 4,675 mm long and 2,000 mm wide; height remains undisclosed. It weighs at approximately 1,100 kg.

What is established is this – the Honda HSV-010 GT is a very good-looking car. It even has a high octave wail that lets you know that it is coming in for the kill. The fact that it is also talented in speed and handling only helps to seal its predatory reputation that it cemented since Season One.

The HSV-010 GT is now in its third year and it looks stronger than ever. This year, the car features improvements made to the radiator and is now standard with air-conditioning. No, really.

This writer and a select group of journalist sat down earlier with Honda’s Masahiko Matsumoto, the Honda GT Project Leader, and Team Kunimitsu’s Team Director Kunimitsu Takahashi and drivers Takuya Izawa and Naoki Yamamoto. We gained some insight on the car, the team, the drivers and their goals.

Any new developments on the car?

Masahiko Matsumoto (MM): We have further developed the side radiator at the front of the engine and we have reduced the weight of the machine. We’ve also improved the certain aspects of the front and rear and the engine have been upgraded as well.

Different teams use a different setup on different circuits. So where does the HSV perform the best?

MM: The car is made for all circuits, but currently, the car performs best in Suzuka.

Sepang is known to be a hot race. Are there any special preparations that the team and driver have to make?

Kunimitsu Takahashi (KT): No, there are no special settings for the car. We rely on the cheer of the crowd to increase our spirit to drive.

MM: Oh, and the cars are equipped with air-conditioning as well.

How much more weight does the air-conditioning add to the car?

MM: The system adds five to six kilos, and that is the compressor itself. But the weight has been balanced out with lighter parts.

Can you tell us which parts were lightened?

MM: Technically, the ‘cool suit’ is the lightened part of the car. These ‘cool suits’ replace the conventional racing suits, which are heavier. And the new suits effectively balances out the additional weight of the aircon system.

Does the driver have the option to change the temperature of the aircon?

Takuya Izawa: Well, there are three fan settings so we can change some of the setup. The aircon takes power from the engine, so the engine’s power is reduced when it is turned on. We can turn on the aircon if it gets hot inside. It is good to have some air into the helmet, which can become very hot inside. The cool suits are used to cool the body only, which helps a lot.

Do you also use the aircon system in Japan?

MM: Yes, we will be using the system for the majority of the season, especially during the summer months.

Team Kunimitsu is currently leading the season in terms of points. Does the team still think they have edge despite the additional ballast that must be carried in this race?

MM: In the 2nd round, we were carrying 60 kg of ballast, which is huge. We believe that this won’t pose a problem because with the developments made, we may even win in Sepang.

How competitive are Honda’s cars compared to Toyota and Nissan?

MM: For Sepang, well because this race circuit has a lot of corners, Toyota drops out of the equation. So here, you’ll probably see a close fight between Nissan and Honda. Also, there are some un-weighted Honda cars out there, so that is something to look forward to in the race.

Team Kunimitsu, who is your greatest rival?

TK: All teams, drivers and machines are at the same level. But I believe we have the best drivers and with your support, we’d like to win the race this time. I’d like to ask the members of the media for any ideas how can we get the drivers to drive quicker? Any food like durian?

                We suggest drinking Tongkat Ali.

Honda will again field five teams and five cars this year. Here’s a brief introduction to the five teams:

#8 Autobacs Racing Team Aguri welcomes Ralph Firman back to Super GT. He will be imparting his experience to his younger partner Takashi Kobayashi. Team Director Aguri Suzuki leads.

#18 Weider Honda Racing grabbed pole and went on to win the race last year. New to the team this year is race driver Carlo van Dam who will partner Takashi Kogure. Takuya Nakamura is the Team Director.

#17 Keihin Real Racing is led by Team Director Katsutomo Kameishi. Driving the team’s HSV is Toshihiro Kaneishi and Kodai Tsukakoshi.

#32 Nakajima Racing is unlike the rest of the Honda-powered teams. While the rest are on Bridgestone tyres, Car #32 runs on Dunlop tyres. They believe that the brand of tyre does not determine the performance of the car but from the effort and contribution of every team member. The team names Ryo Michigami and Yuhki Nakayama as their drivers and Satoru Nakajima is the Director of the team.

#100 Team Kunimitsu have the youngest average age drivers. Takuya Izawa is 28 and Naoki Yamamoto is 24. Kunimitsu Takahashi is the Team Director. The team came in second for rounds one and two, scoring 15 points each, which bumped them up the leaderboard.

                    * Demand to stay solid thank to incentives - analyst

                    * Toyota, GM, Nissan shines in May, Mazda lags

By Fang Yan and Ken Wills

BEIJING, June 9 (Reuters) - Car sales in China rose 22.6 percent in May from a year earlier, according to data released on Saturday, extending the double-digit gain made in the previous month, as new models premiered at April's Beijing autoshow started to hit the showrooms.

In May a total of 1.28 million sedans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) and minivans were sold in the country, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said. In the same month of 2011, that number was 1.04 million.

From January to May, deliveries climbed 5.5 percent to 6.33 million, continuing an uptrend which started in April.

The strong rebound by Toyota Motor and Honda Motor , which both suffered severe shortages of parts a year ago after northern Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, also pushed up the monthly tally.

Demand is likely to remain solid if Beijing renews some of its policy incentives which helped propel China beyond the U.S. as the world's largest car market by volume in 2009, industry observers say.

"The incentives will help bolster demand for minivans, and cheap cars like (the) QQ, which are popular in lower-tier cities and rural areas," said John Zeng, Asia Pacific director at industry consultancy LMC Automotive. "If such policy incentives do come out as expected, sales in the second half would definitely be better than the first half."

A source told Reuters late last month that Beijing would soon resume paying subsidies to rural residents who trade in old vehicles for new, fuel efficient ones to rekindle automobile demand amid a market slowdown.

Beijing introduced a series of stimuli in 2009, including tax incentives for small cars, but China's auto market slowed significantly in 2011 after the policies expired, with annual car sales climbing 5.2 percent, down from a 33 percent and 53 percent annual gains in 2010 and 2009 respectively.

In the United States, automakers posted strong May sales gains from a year ago, but the sales rate still fell short of expectations as the broader economy softened.

Toyota and Honda saw their China car sales jumped 105 percent and 92 percent respectively.

General Motors maintained its leading position in China helped in part by a rebound in minivan sales, which contributed to about 55 percent of its monthly tally.

SAIC Motor Corp, a longtime partner of GM and Volkswagen AG, was the big domestic winner with a year-on-year growth rate of 20.9 percent in May.

Honda 2NH MPV based on Brio being developed

Honda has unveiled that it is developing a new affordable MPV based on the Honda Brio. The new Brio-based MPV is codenamed the Honda 2NH, and it will be produced at Honda’s new RM1.05 billion automobile production plant in Karawang Industrial Park, Jakarta, Indonesia, alongside the Brio.

The new MPV is designed for Asian countries, and we expect it to be sold in markets such as ASEAN and India, and it will have local content of approximately 80%, which is up from the current level of about 50%.

Just like how Thailand is famous for their affinity towards pick-up trucks, Indonesia is the ASEAN MPV haven, and many automobile companies have based their ASEAN MPV production there. Even European companies have invested in Indonesia for MPV production – Volkswagen invested RM166 million in 2009 to assemble the Volkswagen Touran, Volkswagen Transporter T5 and Volkswagen Multivan there, with full fledged manufacturing to be considered in the future.

Honda’s existing small MPV the Honda Freed is also built in Indonesia for the region, but perhaps the Freed is a little too expensive and of not the right shape (it’s very JDM-inspired) to really compete with other ASEAN MPVs such as the Toyota Avanza and the Nissan Grand Livina. We expect the new Honda Brio-based MPV to follow a more traditional MPV shape, trim and price tag.

Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Reportedly Sighted

Recently in Southern California, the folks at Automotive.com managed to snap some pictures of a prototype Accord bearing similar styling cues to the concept seen above.

The car in question is believed to be the upcoming plug-in hybrid model, one of two zero emission vehicles the company is introducing – the other being the Fit Electric Vehicle) – in order to help it meet tough California Air Resources Board quotas, which call for a total of 60,000 ZEVs on the road in 12 states by 2014.

Although the car in the photos was heavily camouflaged, a filler door on the driver’s side fender would indicate a provision for a plug in electrical port.

The upcoming Accord hybrid will sport a 6-kilowatt per hour lithium ion battery pack; that provides juice to a single electric motor, which drives the front wheels. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine provides power once the battery is depleted and powers the car at speeds over 40 miles per hour.

Honda hasn’t offered an Accord Hybrid since 2008 (the last one was canned due to tepid demand), though it’s likely this time around, with hybrids and EVs enjoying greater exposure in the marketplace, the new plug-in version will likely generate better consumer response.

The 2013 Accord (in conventional gasoline engine form with 2.4-liter four and 3.5-liter V6 motors); is slated to be introduced this fall, though the hybrid version probably won’t show up until sometime next year.

Honda Is Doing Quite Well, Thanks

Your glass-half-empty article "Honda Pins Its Revival on U.S. Sales" (Marketplace, June 1) misses the reality of our sales comeback and ignores our strong resurgence in the U.S. from a year of incredible hardship brought on by catastrophic natural disasters in Japan and Thailand in 2011.
Honda's return to full strength is well under way as demonstrated by both our recent sales results and a string of key industry reports. As you note, Honda has three of the top 10 best-selling vehicles in 2012, including the industry's best-selling SUV and compact car. Our May sales results further underscore our momentum—up 48%, the best May sales performance in four years, nearly doubling up on an industry gain of 26%. We achieved this without the deeply discounted fleet sales employed by most other auto makers and with incentive spending among the lowest in the industry.
Other strong indications come from outside experts including the Kelley Blue Book report that the Accord, Civic and CR-V were three of the top four most visited new cars on kbb.com during the first quarter and an acknowledgment from TrueCar that Honda had its highest May transaction prices since TrueCar began tracking this data. Add to that J.D. Power's 2011 Initial Quality Survey, and you can understand why we are feeling bullish.
Perhaps the strongest demonstration of our confidence is the fact that we are increasing production in North America to meet customer demand.

Honda cuts export of Japan-made hybrids, Fit to U.S.

Honda is limiting exports to the U.S. of some Japan-made cars because it's losing money on them, Honda CFO Fumihiko Ike told Automotive News.

The weekly trade journal reports Ike's comments today and says this is the first admission by a Japanese car company that it's losing money on exports to the U.S. The issue is the dollar's weakness vs. the yen, which cuts the value of a U.S. sale.

"Under the current exchange rate of 80 yen per dollar, our export business doesn't make any profit," Ike told Automotive News. "Definitely, the absolute number of exports to the United States will be decreasing."

The exchange issue is why foreign automakers, including Honda, have aggressively expanded production plants in the U.S. in recent years, as well as other operations, from design studios to proving grounds. Vehicles built where they are sold escape the foreign-exchange trap, because the costs and sales revenue are in the same currency.

Honda already makes almost 90% of the vehicles it sells here at North American plants. It's building another one in Mexico and expanding production in other U.S. factories.

U.S.-market Hondas made in Japan and possibly in low supply include the Fit subcompact, Insight hybrid, CR-Z hybrid, Civic hybrid and Acura TSX.

Fit wins USA TODAY-Cars.com Shootout comparison of subcompact cars.

Ike told AN that Honda will move more hybrid production to North America "within a few years."

Toyota and Nissan wouldn't say if they, too, lose money on cars shipped to the U.S., but both noted they are shifting production to North America.

"We're focused on localizing," producing here 85% of vehicles sold here by the end of next year, up from 70%, said Nissan's U.S. spokesman, David Reuter. The Rogue SUV, for example, now is made in Japan but will be built at Smyrna, Tenn., next summer.

Toyota builds in North America 72.5% of the vehicles it sells here. "Our executives say we don't want knee-jerk reactions, but the long-term goal is to build them where we sell them," said U.S. spokesman Mike Michels. "That insulates us to a greater extent" from currency issues.

Honda will continue to ship some money-losers to the U.S. because, "We need to keep our customer base," Ike told AN, and "for the sake of our dealers. At least they have something."

Honda's U.S. officials hinted at the problem recently in explaining low sales of the redone Insight hybrid, saying it was due to fewer to sell, not low appeal. There are more profitable markets elsewhere for Insight, Honda said.

Honda follows rivals with Indonesian car market expansion plans

Honda ( HMC , quote ) is joining numerous foreign automakers with its plans to build a new assembly plant to boost local production of its most popular models in Indonesia, Southeast Asia's second-largest car market after Thailand.
Last week Honda Prospect Motor, the Japanese auto manufacturer's distributor and assembler in Indonesia, began construction on a $329 million factory in Karawang, West Java. The factory, which Honda hopes will boost its local production threefold to 180,000 vehicles annually, is the company's second manufacturing plant in the archipelago.

The plant will produce models such as the Honda Jazz four-door compact hatchback, CR-V compact sports-utility vehicle and Freed multi-purpose vehicle. Additionally, however, Honda aims to start producing models that it imports for the time being, such as the Brio, another hatchback model.

"The plan is that it will produce new models such as the Honda Brio," said Honda chief executive officer Takanobu Ito, according to the Jakarta Globe .

A record 894,180 vehicles were sold in the Indonesian car market in 2011, a 17% increase over a year earlier, according to the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo). While growth is projected to slip to 5% this year, Indonesia looks set to overtake Thailand as the region's top car market.

"With the automotive market growing and conducive economic conditions, this country holds big potential for the automotive industry," Ito said to the Jakarta Globe .

Because auto production requires a lot of capital and is labor intensive, Indonesia's low costs make local production especially appealing to foreign companies.

Consequently, Toyota ( TM , quote ) has also said it will invest $143 million to build a new factory to boost local output by 60%. Suzuki ( SZKMF , quote ) has even grander plans. It announced it would invest $700 million to construct a new engine plant that will also expand its production in Indonesia.

General Motors ( GM , quote ), BMW, and Tata ( TTM , quote ) are likewise making plans to make inroads in the Indonesian car market.

BIG, FAMILY CARS; Honda unveils Odyssey, Pilot

Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), Honda’s automobile production and sales subsidiary in the Philippines, launched last week the all-new Pilot and Odyssey. Following the launch of the new City last January, the all-new Civic and Jazz Special Edition in February, and the all-new CR-V in April, HCPI said the all-new Pilot and Odyssey not only strengthen Honda’s return to the Philippine automotive market, but also expands its model lineup.

Since the introduction of the Pilot and Odyssey in the United States, each model has received numerous awards and recognitions from various bodies and institutions due to its outstanding roominess, versatility, efficiency, and safety. Both models have unit-body construction and independent suspension that provide car-like driving feel and ride comfort.

Both models are made in the United States.

The Philippines is the first country in the Asia and Oceania region to introduce both of these models.

HCPI said the all-new Pilot was developed with the concept of “intelligent family adventure.” Understanding that Honda customers are smart and make intelligent decisions, the Pilot reflects this intelligence with leading engine technology, safety for everyone, and concern for the environment.

To provide each member of the family with equal and enjoyable experience, the interior of the Pilot is equipped with various amenities and flexible cargo configuration to enhance the travelling experience.

The sense of adventure can be seen with the bold design of the Pilot and its good on-road and off-road handling.

For the all-new Odyssey, the fourth generation of this model was developed with the concept of “ultimate family vehicle,” combining chic new styling, class-leading performance, advance family safety, and ultimate utility.

The exterior of the Odyssey has a modern and sophisticated styling that features the “lightning bolt” side profile that gives it a distinctive identity against competitors with indistinguishable designs.

Excellent engine performance and ride comfort enhances any family trip, while the interior of the Odyssey gives high consideration to occupant safety and convenience with its high level of safety features and amenities.

Ccargo space configurability is improved with the third row “magic seats” that allows it to be tucked away completely or partially.

“Philippine customers truly enjoy spending time with their families. One can observe families going out together on weekends to dine out after mass or to relax in an out-of-town getaway,” said Tatsuya Natsume, president and general manager of HCPI.

The Odyssey and Pilot makes travelling together more enjoyable with its comfortable space and versatile interior configuration.

The Odyssey has a low ground clearance that enables second and third row passengers, especially the elderly, to easily get in and out of the vehicle. At the side, the power sliding doors at both sides of the vehicle allow effortless opening and closing. At the rear, the power tailgate allows easy closing. Both the power sliding doors and tailgate have anti-pinch function, which prevents a person from being accidentally caught when closing.

The Pilot, on the other hand, provides both good on-road and off-road capabilities with its four-wheel drive function while still providing a comfortable and enjoyable ride for its occupants.

The first generation Odyssey was introduced in 1994, followed by the second generation in 1999, and the third generation in 2005.

On the other hand, the first generation Pilot was introduced in 2002. The Pilot that was launched is the second generation model that was introduced 2008 and received an extensive upgrade in 2011.

A key product characteristic of both models is the unit-body construction and independent suspension that is designed to give the Pilot and Odyssey a sedan-like driving feel and ride comfort.

In the United States, both the Odyssey and the Pilot have been well received by customers. Through the years, both models have received many accolades and awards from various publications and institutions because of its outstanding roominess, efficiency, versatility, and safety.

Natsume said HCPI believes that these characteristics of the Odyssey and the Pilot will also be appreciated by our customers in the Philippines.

Xavier Eyadan, department head of the marketing department of HCPI, said each model will have one variant, the 3.5 liter EX-L with automatic transmission for the Odyssey and the 3.5 liter EX-L automatic transmission with four-wheel drive for the Pilot. Three exterior colors will be available for each model. For the Odyssey, these are the White Diamond, Smoky Topaz, and Mocha Metallic. For the Pilot, these are the Crystal Black, Taffeta White, and Dark Amber.

Eyadan said the suggested retail price of the Odyssey is P2.8 million with an additional P20,000 for the White Diamond.

The suggested retail price of the Pilot is P2.6 million.

Honda isn’t making any profits on models imported into the US: CFO

Honda Motor Company is carefully monitoring and allocating shipments of its cars built in Japan and imported into the US because it’s losing money on them, Chief Financial Officer Fumihiko Ike said. These include the Fit hatchback and the CR-Z and Insight hybrids. The result is that some dealers aren’t getting enough vehicles.
The exchange rate is what’s hurting the profits of these models, Ike said in an Automotive News report. As such, he said exports of these models to North America will be decreased. For the long-term, Honda needs to source more parts from North America, including hybrid powertrain components. But the Japanese automaker is better protected against such currency difference than some competitors, as it builds about 85 percent of all the vehicles it sells in North America locally.
Ike side the exports need to continue in order to cover segments and keep customers, while at the same time satisfying dealers.
Production of the Fit will be moved to a new Mexican plant that’s due to open in 2014. The Fit made up nearly a third of Honda’s imports into the US in 2010 and 2011. Ike said the Fit doesn’t make any profit for Honda. On a much smaller scale, some CR-Vs, hybrids, and Acura models are imported from Japan.

Honda launches 2 8-seaters: Honda pilot

MANILA, Philippines - So you’ve become a pretty successful guy. You’ve blown out a half-a-million peso hole in your wallet for a new IWC pilot’s watch after the renovations were done on your Forbes Park mansion. What’s next? Well, if you’ve some P 2.6-million in loose change stashed somewhere, why don’t you reward yourself with a fancy new crossover. Mind you, it can’t simply be any ordinary crossover; it has to be as adventurous, smart, and versatile as you are. In other words, it’s got to be the second-generation Honda Pilot.

If the name seems familiar, it’s because the Honda Pilot has been a huge critical and sales success in North America. Although its success wasn’t carried over to the Philippines, the Pilot nonetheless paved the way for some important brand building: Honda is moving the brand upmarket. And it’s facing some pretty stiff competition not just from its fellow Japanese brands but from the American as well as some European makes as well. So what does the Pilot have to offer that makes it stand out from the crowd? Well, it’s best described through the Pilot’s design ethos which is “Intelligent Family Adventure.”

Outside, the Pilot is distinctively and decisively boxy. The bold exterior features an interesting front fascia with squared-off headlamps and Honda’s trademark three-bar grille. More than just being extraordinary, the Pilot’s sheet metal is designed to make it as efficient as possible. The front air dam for instance, is shaped to cut the wind better, resulting in less air drag and improved fuel economy. The formal two-box design assures that all three rows of seats get ample room, while the two-piece tailgate (with separately opening glass) makes for easy loading of items. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, the Pilot comes standard with functional roof rails and a hidden tow hitch (maximum towing capacity is 2,045 kg). The Pilot rides on a set of high-contrast 17-inch alloys with 245/65R17 tires and is available in three colors: Taffeta White, Crystal Black, and Dark Amber.

Inside, the Honda Pilot is designed to be as refined and intuitive as possible. The color scheme is unified with less contrast between panels for a very upscale look. The seats (power adjustment for the front row) and steering wheel are finished with high-quality leather while a gloss-black finish surrounding the audio controls draws the eye to the high-tech center stack. Here, Hondas’s i-MID or Intelligent Multi-Information Display is housed. It incorporates an 8-inch QVGA screen which displays a wide variety of information from trip/fuel economy to song/track information of your USB or iPod. It also shows information when the Bluetooth HandsFreeLink is operational and doubles as the display for the Pilot’s standard rear parking camera.

And befitting a luxury crossover, the Pilot comes with a fully-featured entertainment system with CD/MP3 operation as well as full iPod compatibility and Bluetooth audio streaming. The Pilot also boasts of an internal 2GB of internal flash memory which “rips” CDs allowing it to store up to 18 albums without the need for external software or computers. The sound comes out of a high-fidelity 7-speaker audio system.

Beyond the high-tech toys, the Pilot also has more “traditional” luxury features such as a roomy cabin (according to Honda, the roomiest in its segment), a power moon roof, auto on/off halogen headlamps, cruise control, and proximity sensors for both front and back. Engineers have also worked to give the Pilot a quiet cabin by introducing enhanced body seam seals, re-tuned rear suspension sub-frame mounts, enhanced pillar separators, improved insulation materials, and even employing an acoustic glass for the windshield.

Honda deems it important to employ a drivetrain to match the Pilot’s bold exterior and luxurious interior. To this end, they turned to the 3.5-liter V6 first introduced in the Accord. However improvements have been made to improve fuel efficiency including the application of a plateau-honed engine block, low-friction piston treatments, ion-plated piston rings, and the use of low-friction motor oil. These improvements together with the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and i-VTEC technology promise best-in-class fuel economy while delivering 257 horsepower and 35.4 kg-m of torque. All this power is transferred through Honda’s VTM-4 variable all-wheel drive system with a locking differential.

In the realm of safety, the Honda Pilot features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure along with the standard array of six airbags, ABS, Brake Assist, and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).

With a price tag of P 2.6-million, it’s clear that this Honda isn’t for every Juan Dela Cruz. However, the Pilot offers a truly intelligent, bold, and unique choice in the luxury crossover segment—adjectives which surely tickle the right set of buyers. Honda has brought its A-game with the launch of the Pilot and it offers true 8-seater comfort and luxury along with everything else the brand is known for: fun-to-drive, practical, and earth-friendly. So before settling with ubiquity, try something a bit left-field. Try the Honda Pilot. Who knows, it may just match your new half-million peso watch.

Honda Can Motor To $44 With Recovery, Record Mileage For Electric Cars

Honda Motor’s new Fit electric vehicle has been awarded a 118 miles-per gallon (mpg) equivalency by the Environmental Protection Agency, which is higher than that for Nissan Leaf or Ford Focus EV. [1]

Competition is certainly heating up in the electric car segment as General Motors recently announced that its engineers were able to increase the efficiency of its Chevrolet Volt and the car would be able to travel 38 miles on a single charge of electricity, an increase of 3 miles from the current version.

In another event, Honda’s May sales grew impressively which confirms the Japanese automaker’s recovery from a harsh 2011 is on track.

We have a price estimate of $44 for Honda Motors, which is around 30% above the current market price.

                          Cars Sold Only Through Leases

Initially, Honda will only offer the car through a lease option, starting at $389 a month. The price for electric cars is much higher compared to its gasoline versions. Honda Fit EV, for example, costs $29,125 after a federal tax credit of $7,500, which is more than $12,000 higher than the gas version.

However, the running cost for electric cars is lower than that for gasoline cars. Consumers are hesitant to pay the entire sum upfront, and that is why leasing out such cars makes sense as the increased monthly installments are offset by lower running costs. In addition, it gives users a sense of pride in their contribution toward environmental protection.

The Honda Fit EV does enjoy some considerable technical advantages over its rivals. The claimed mileage, which is equivalent of 118 mpg, is much higher than Leaf’s 99 mpg or Focus EV’s 105 mpg. Moreover, the battery can be charged in less than three hours, compared to 3.5 hours for Focus and 7-8 hours for Leaf. Furthermore, the car can last 82 miles on a single electric charge, which is higher than the corresponding figures for the other two. [1]

                          May Sales Impress

Honda sales in the U.S. climbed 48% to 133,997 vehicles in May as the Japanese automaker recovered from last year’s tragic tsunami. Car sales witnessed a 54% jump while truck sales grew 41%. Sales were boosted by Civic and Accord, which grew by 82.6% and 74.7%, respectively. [2] As Honda sales rebound this year, we expect a substantial increase in its market share in the North American vehicle market.

Honda Motors, through its joint ventures in China, sold 52,146 vehicles in China in May, an increase of 91.7% y-o-y. The company has sold 261,761 vehicles in the country so far in 2012, up 10.8%. [3]

U.S. car dealers refusing Canadians illegally, prof says

'Refusal to deal' law in U.S. isn't being enforced, trade expert alleges

Automakers are breaking U.S. law in order to prevent Canadians from buying cheaper cars there, according to an Ottawa trade lawyer and anti-trust expert, by ordering their American licensed dealerships not to sell new cars to Canadians.
The big five automakers — Ford, GM, Chrysler, Honda and Toyota — fear they could lose their Canadian franchises if people were crossing the border to buy their vehicles, says Michael Hart, who holds the Simon Reisman chair in trade policy at Carleton University.
This forces Canadians to buy from dealerships north of the border, where prices tend to be thousands of dollars higher.
The Canadian prices for Canadian-made vehicles tend to be lower or on par with American prices for the more affordable vehicles like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, consumer advocates have told CBC News.
But for more expensive vehicles, the price differences are particularly noticeable, especially considering the relative dollar parity between Canada and the United States.
                            Dealerships fear breaking rules

Hart added the companies are guilty of "refusal to deal," which is an automatic offence under U.S. anti-trust laws, but the government is not acting to help consumers.
"It can also be solved, in part, by the government," said Hart. "I mean the government can reduce the current incentives not to buy in the U.S."
Jack Backus, who owns Backus & Sons GM in Ogdensburg, N.Y., said he received a letter five years ago from General Motors directing him to sell only to Americans.
The dealer sales and service agreement included a clause that authorized his dealership to sell "only to customers located in the United States".
A Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership owner in Massena, N.Y., confirmed he has received a similar letter from GM. He said the first-time breaking the rule would only lead to a slap on the wrist, but after a few sales there is a fear he would lose his business.
                            Customs system discouraging

Hart added the Canadian government has played its part, too, in setting obstacles for Canadian car buyers who want a deal. The paperwork is both complicated and costly, costing hundreds of dollars depending on the vehicle.
"The whole customs system is set up to discourage Canadians from going down to the U.S. and saving money," he said.
Hart also alleged car companies are making purchases less attractive by refusing to honour warranties on their own models when Canadians buy them in the U.S.
He said there is currently a class-action suit in a U.S. court against several automakers alleging anti-competitive practices, but it has lagged there for many years.
The Competition Bureau has said in an email response it conducts its investigations confidentially and so would not comment on whether it had received any complaints about anti-competitive practices by car manufacturers or whether it has any investigations on the subject.

Do Honda's losses on U.S. exports suggest dumping?

DETROIT -- Honda Motor CFO Fumihiko Ike has acknowledged the automaker is losing money on its exports of vehicles from Japan to the United States.

“Our export business doesn’t make any profit” on vehicles shipped to the United States, Ike told Automotive News Asia Editor Hans Greimel in Tokyo.

So all the cars you’re sending over there from here in Japan, Greimel asked, aren’t profitable?

                            “Losing money,” the CFO responded.

So is Honda dumping? Are other Japanese automakers?

Whenever the issue of dumping arises, I recall an interview I did in 1977, back when U.S.-Japan trade disputes were a staple of reporting from Japan.

The head of Japan’s industrial fastener association was incensed at the United States, which was preparing to impose anti-dumping duties on nuts, bolts and other fasteners from Japan. I was interviewing him in his offices across the street from Tokyo Tower.

“We’re not dumping!” he insisted. “Because of the yen’s strength against the dollar, we may have to sell below cost for a while to maintain our market share, but we’re not dumping.”

Ahem, I thought. How do you define dumping if selling below your costs doesn’t qualify?

In fact, he was right -- sort of. Selling below cost is one of two criteria for determining whether a foreign producer or industry is guilty of dumping goods in the United States. The second: The imported goods also must be shown to be damaging a U.S. producer of the same goods.

It sure sounds like Honda meets the “selling below cost” test. But is anyone being damaged?

It’s hard to believe that any domestic automaker has been damaged by Honda’s sales of 3,547 Honda Insight hybrids, down 65 percent through May. Its main rival is the imported Toyota Prius C.

Are sales of the imported Honda Fit hurting sales of the Ford Fiesta? Through May, sales totaled 19,706 Fits, down 33 percent, and 26,737 Fiestas, down 27 percent. Hmm.

It might be possible for another automaker to prove that it was being hurt by Honda’s selling cars at unprofitable prices. But would it be worth the time and legal fees? Doubtful.

                            Here’s a more intriguing question.

If Honda is losing money on sales of its imported Acuras, are Lexus and Infiniti imports also unprofitable? Are those cars being dumped?

Proving dumping is an extremely costly and complex task with a dubious outcome. I honestly don’t expect any domestic automaker to seek anti-dumping actions from the U.S. government.

But I do expect to see more production of Japanese vehicles shifted to North America from Japan. If it was built here, it wasn’t dumped.

5 new cars for family road trips

Detroit— It's an American rite of passage: the family road trip.
While everyone loves the destination, not many people relish the time spent in the car. But the type of car you choose can help ease that discomfort.
Large sedans or minivans are best for families with younger children, because the windows sit lower and make it easier for kids to look out, says David Champion, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports. Station wagons are great, too, because it's easier to reach in back and get snacks.
When it comes to features, Champion suggests nixing built-in navigation, which can be pricey. It's too hard to talk to those systems over the sound of the kids in the back. Instead, have a passenger type in the destination on a hand-held navigation device or smartphone.
Here are five new or recently redesigned cars and SUVs that are ideal for road trips because of their family-friendly features or great gas mileage.
                            1. Toyota Prius V
If fuel economy is your main concern, consider the Prius V hybrid wagon, which went on sale last fall. The five-seat Prius V gets an estimated 42 miles per gallon in city and highway driving, which isn't as good as the 50-mpg standard Prius small car but better than its non-hybrid competitors among crossovers. It's also roomier than a standard Prius, with 13 additional cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats. That cargo space doubles when you fold down the rear seats, which also recline for young nappers. The Prius V starts at $26,550. A well-equipped version, with a sunroof and a hands-free parallel parking system that parks the car by itself, will set you back $30,140.

                            2. Honda Cr-V:

The CR-V, which was redesigned last fall, is consistently one of the best-selling crossovers in the country. Car buying site Edmunds.com praises the five-seater's car-like ride and fuel economy, which averages 26 miles per gallon. It has 37 cubic feet of cargo space — the equivalent of 52 grocery bags — behind the rear seats. The CR-V has a lot of standard family-friendly features, including a backup camera and a "conversation mirror" that makes it easier for parents to see what's going on in the back seat. The CR-V starts at $22,495. To get Honda's rear entertainment system, which has a 7-inch screen mounted above the rear seats and wireless headphones, you have to upgrade to a $27,945 EX-L model.

                            3. Mazda5
It's hard to beat a minivan for convenience when traveling with a family. The Mazda5, which was redesigned for the 2012 model year, offers minivan amenities such as dual sliding doors in a small package that's fun to drive. It seats six, with second-row captain's chairs that can recline or fold down for easier access to the third row. It's not as roomy as its rivals, and its four-cylinder engine has less power than their V6s. But it also gets better fuel economy: 28 miles per gallon, compared with 24 on the Toyota Sienna. The Mazda5 starts at $19,625 for a manual transmission. For $1,200, you can add a 7-inch overhead monitor with a remote control and wireless headphones.
                            4. Hyundai Azera
The redesigned Azera, which went on sale earlier this year, has the most head and leg room of any large sedan and an ample 16-cubic-foot trunk. For comparison's sake, that's two more cubic feet than the Toyota Avalon, a close competitor. Among the Azera's standard features are a backup camera and heated front and rear seats. At 23 miles per gallon, fuel economy isn't great, but it's comparable to others in the segment. The Azera starts at $32,000.
                            5. Ford Flex
Champion's hands-down favorite for a road trip is the Ford Flex, a seven-passenger wagon that was redesigned for the 2013 model year and went on sale earlier this year. According to Ford, the Flex has the most second- and third-floor leg room of any large utility vehicle. The Flex gets 23 miles per gallon. It starts at $30,885, but many features cost extra. The inflatable belts are a $195 option, for example, while an entertainment system with two 7-inch DVD monitors that can be installed for $658. The ultimate family feature — a refrigerated center console in the back seat that can chill seven cans — is a $795 option in the $42,000 Flex Limited.

Honda Suffering Reputation Loss Taps American’s Retooling

Erik Berkman’s iPhone wallpaper isn’t of his wife, children or dog. When Honda (7267) Motor Co.’s new North American development chief gets a text message, he sees a background picture of the automaker’s V-6 IndyCar racing engine.

Dario Franchitti won the Indianapolis 500 last month using the engine designed by a team led by Berkman, who was at the track known as the Brickyard to watch. Motor-sports passion -- central to founder Soichiro Honda, who said, “If Honda does not race, there is no Honda” -- will be an asset if Berkman can apply the same speed and creativity to product development.

Honda’s first American president of R&D for the region is helping shape everything from a modified Civic and new Accord due this year to an overhaul of the Acura line that includes the NSX supercar. The 30-veteran of Tokyo-based Honda plans to win back its reputation for innovative cars in the face of improving Korean, U.S. and German competition as well as critical reviews.

“I know that there is a particularly high expectation for Honda to get back that magic it had at one time,” said Berkman, 53, in an interview last month at his new domain, the vast R&D center in Raymond, Ohio. “What are we going to do, complain that expectations are too high for us? That we want low expectations? That’s not right.”

Product development and engine innovations have a special place at Honda, which has been led since its beginning only by engineers, even as tight business controls appear to have led it to take fewer risks on core models in the past decade.
                              Sporty Ride

Along with overseeing eight U.S.-developed Honda and Acura models, Berkman has to find a way to add content and upgrade interiors within a company that controls spending so tightly it made money even through the recession, natural disasters and exchange rate pain. Honda is the only major automaker to have never had an annual loss.

While Honda and Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) won fans in the 1970s for durable cars that were inexpensive and fuel-efficient, Honda boasted the sportier ride, reflecting the founder’s racing fervor. Honda’s R&D Americas president has to get that back.

“Honda is off the rails; they still build a great car, but they aren’t leaders,” said John Wolkonowicz, an independent analyst in Boston who specializes in automotive history. “In the ’80s Honda, had the best cars on the market. They drove the best, had great fuel economy and people really loved them.”

While Honda’s U.S. sales in 2007 more than doubled the combined U.S. deliveries of Hyundai Motor Co. (005380) and affiliate Kia Motors Corp. (000270), the Koreans were within 1 percent of Honda last year. Accord, the best-selling car in the U.S. in 2001, has been topped by Toyota’s Camry every year since then. Toyota’s Corolla has exceeded Civic’s U.S. sales annually since 2003.
                              Honda’s Man

Berkman may be the ideal man for the job he started April 1, succeeding Hiroshi Takemura, who returned to Japan as deputy director of automobile operations. The compact engineer with close-cropped brown hair joined Honda in 1982 when it started making cars in the U.S. in Marysville, Ohio. His only automotive job before that was with a company John DeLorean hired to turbocharge DeLorean Motor Co.’s DMC-12 gull-winged sports cars.

After starting as a production engineer, Berkman moved to Honda’s U.S. R&D unit in 1991, working on models including the 1994 Accord wagon, 1999 Odyssey minivan and 2001 Acura CL coupe. His biggest success was leading development of the 2004 Acura TL sport sedan.

Before it became one of Acura’s best-selling cars, it was far from universally loved within Honda. High-end content, such as performance brakes by Italy’s Brembo SpA (BRE), was seen as too costly. The exterior styling was too edgy and polarizing.
                              TL Controversy

“It was so controversial, it almost didn’t happen,” Berkman recalled. “It was too much for some people.”

Reactions to the TL’s design in consumer clinics didn’t clarify the situation, Berkman said. “Half the people said they loved it, half of them hated it,” he said.

Ultimately, his vision of the car was approved for production. More than 77,000 were sold in its first full year, making it 2004’s top luxury sedan.

“I fought for the one I wanted, and it worked,” he said.

Honda is counting on those instincts to come through again. Honda President Takanobu Ito, who worked with Berkman at the U.S. R&D center in the 1990s, and Executive Vice President Tetsuo Iwamura, head of North American operations, have high expectations for him.

“Through his career, he has a very good understanding of Honda,” Iwamura said in a March interview at Honda’s U.S. headquarters in Torrance, California. “What we expect him to do is, through this good knowledge and experience, fulfill his dream of making North America strong.”
                              Civic Tweaks

Honda is looking better in 2012 already. With the factories again running at full capacity, U.S. sales have expanded 10 percent this year, buoyed by a 48 percent increase last month. While the company has easy comparisons with last year’s disaster-limited results, it has three models among the top 10 sellers in the U.S. this year: the midsize Accord, CR-V compact sport-utility vehicle and the Civic.

The 2012 Civic drew a harsh review in Consumer Reports in August 2011 and failed to win the magazine’s “recommend” designation. The non-profit publication for decades consistently placed Honda models among its top picks. The magazine said the new car, compared with the version it replaced, had a choppier ride, less agility, longer stopping distances, more road noise and a worse interior.

Berkman has helped to fix it midstream. The model’s mid- cycle refresh, due in about three months, was moved up by about a year. Among the improvements will be better interior materials, he said.

“There’s an opportunity with the minor model change to tweak Civic,” Berkman said. “If we do that, we’ll knock off one more criticism.”
                              ‘Earth Dreams’

He’s planning changes in styling, materials, driving dynamics and technology across the Honda and Acura model lines.

That begins this year with a revamped Accord featuring Honda’s new “Earth Dreams” family of engines and related technology, including continuously variable transmissions, the company’s first such powertrain change in a decade. Honda previously used CVTs only on small cars made in Japan.

Starting with the 2013 Accord, the new transmission, with an infinite number of gear ratios, replaces the current five- speed automatic to aid fuel-economy and performance, Berkman said. The engine line, with displacement ranges from 660 cubic centimeters to 3.5 liters, is being added to every new Honda model starting with Accord.

“You’re going to find that Accord is a very well-balanced product that is the best overall product in everything, whether we’re talking about interior packaging, content of the vehicle, the fuel economy of the vehicle,” he said. It “will be one of the most feature-rich vehicles we’ve ever made,” he said, without elaborating.
                              Acura Supercar

Acura, Honda’s premium brand that some auto reviewers don’t regard as a full-fledged luxury line, will also see new styling and benefit from technology such as the high-performance hybrid system going into the NSX, he said. The car, likely to cost more than $100,000, will be raced as well as sold, Ito said in Detroit in January.

The NSX will go on sale in about two years, Honda has said. An ad for the car that ran during this year’s Super Bowl featured comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno.

Berkman said his team is eager to shake off the idea that Honda’s vehicles have become bland or lack the value of its glory days.

“Having high expectations or pressure is what’s necessary to get us to a point where we’re performing,” he said. “We want everybody to fall over and go: There it is again. There’s that Honda we used to praise.”

Honda boosts North American plants' production 67%

                              Honda plants' output up 67%

Honda Motor Co. has raised output at North American plants by the fastest pace of any carmaker this year as the company pushes to reclaim U.S. market share lost to competitors and natural disasters in 2011.

Honda plants in the United States, Canada and Mexico built 748,217 cars and light trucks in the year's first five months, a record for the period and 67 percent more than a year earlier, according to the company. Toyota Motor Corp., Asia's biggest automaker, followed with a 64 percent North American increase to 787,777 vehicles.

"We've been doing everything we can to make up for lost time," Tom Lake, Honda's head of North American purchasing, said.

Honda, the third-largest Japanese carmaker, and Toyota are targeting gains of 10 percent or more in U.S. sales this year after losing ground to Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp., both based in Seoul.

                              HONDA CIVIC SPORT

                              3.5 stars

                              Price $27,990

                              Value 4

We’re looking at the mid-range Civic Sport which comes with a fi ve-speed auto. It gets, as standard, things like Bluetooth and iPod connectivity with audio streaming, reach and rake adjustable steering, Intelligent Multi-Information Display (which shows distance-to-empty, clock, audio system, etc).

                              Technology 3.5

There are three engines in the Civic range, including a quasi-Hybrid. The Sport runs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder good
for 114kW and 190Nm at a tall 4300rpm. It consumes 7.5L/100km and has an Econ button to improve fuel economy when you’re running on, say, a freeway at a constant speed.

                              Design 3.5

Honda has stuck with the conservative look. It’s well designed but it won’t get your pulse racing. Inside, the dash
layout is nice and clear and the colour palette has been chosen to create an air of quality. There’s plenty of room
inside and a fl at fl oor in the back means three proper seats.

                              Safety 4

Both cars get fi ve-star ANCAP crash safety rating with six airbags. The airbags for the Civic’s front passengers
(there are two each, so, four all up) can be infl ated at diff erent rates depending on the severity of the crash,
and also the location of the passenger.

                              Driving 3.5

While the basic chassis architecture is unchanged, the current Civic Sport feels and sounds more refined than the Impreza. But it’s a long way behind for chassis dynamics, lacking the Subaru’s depth of talent in the ride and handling department.

                              SUBARU IMPREZA 2.0i-L

                              Value 4

For this money you get dual-zone climate control, 16-inch alloys, rear privacy glass, stop-start, multi-function
steering wheel, multi-function display with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, and a reversing camera as standard.
Add $3000 for satnav and electric sunroof.

                              Technology 3.5

The latest-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer makes 110kW/196Nm. This is mated to either a sixspeed
manual, as standard, or a CVT (a $2500 option). Fuel consumption is 7.1L/100km for the manual, and
                              6.8L/100km for the CVT.

                              Design 3.5

Subaru’s designers have never seemed particularly gifted, though this is better looking than the Liberty.
It features a more hawk-like face, a simple dash design with soft-touch plastics and decent seats. There’s
plenty of room in the front and back.

                              Safety 4.5

Seven airbags standard, AWD, ABS with four-wheel disc brakes and electronic brakeforce distribution, stability
control, brake assist, shock-absorbing brake and clutch pedals, as well as improved pedestrian safety via
energy-absorbing structures in the engine bay.

                              Driving 4

Drive through the first corner and you realise the chassis engineers have produced something wonderful. Sure, you could use more mid-range grunt, but the Impreza body and bump control truly impress. Ride and handling rival a Volkswagen Golf.

In terms of price, equipment and power, there’s very little to separate the two.
However, if you actually enjoy driving rather than just getting from A to B in a cocoon, the Impreza will be the car for you.

The Top 10 Cars For Dad Are Really Depressing

In preparation for Fathers' Day this weekend, TrueCar.com has released its top 10 cars that dads prefer to drive. And boy oh boy is it a sad list.

We realize that sometimes dad has to turn down the performance to enhance the safety for his family, but some of the rides that are being chosen by dads are downright sad. Hopefully, this trend changes soon.
                              See what we mean below:

                              1. Chevy Silverado 1500

                              2. Honda Accord Sedan

                              3. Hyundai Sonata

                              4. Honda Odyssey

                              5. Ford F-150

                              6. Honda Civic

                              7. Toyota Camry

                              8. Honda Pilot

                              9. Ram 1500

                              10. Toyota Sienna

Four Hondas, two Toyotas, and three pickup trucks do not excitement spell.

Coda, Honda and Tesla duking it out for longest electric car driving range

Coda Automotive and Honda trade press releases over electric car driving range, while Tesla Motors is preparing to start shipping the Model S to customers with a range about 3 times that of either the Coda or Honda Fit EV.

Last week Honda shared news that the Honda Fit EV had been awarded the best fuel efficiency of any car, at 118 MPGe, and that its EPA rated 82 mile driving range bests the other electric cars. While congratulations are due to Honda for building a highly efficient car, Coda Automotive today posted a blog post reminding us the EPA rating on their all electric car beats the Honda Fit EV driving range. No word from Tesla Motors whether they'll bother to comment about electric car driving range, given that the Tesla Model S has a 300+ miles range.

What's telling is which competitors an automaker names when comparing features on their car to other cars from other manufacturers. For example, when Honda discussed its fuel efficiency and driving range achievements, the company named the Ford Focus Electric, Nisan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Not named was the Coda electric car, nor were plug-in hybrids named like the Chevy Volt or Prius Plug-In. Likewise when Coda followed suit in discussing their efficiency and range achievements, the Ford Focus Electric, Honda Fit EV, Nisan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV were all mentioned, but the Tesla Model S was not.

The Honda Fit EV, which is due for first customer deliveries this summer, will be available only under a $389/month lease, and then only to customers in California. It has a 20 kilowatt-hour battery pack, and due to a highly efficient drive train that consumes only 29 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, the car offers an 82 mile EPA rated driving range, and 132/105/118 city/highway/combined miles/gallon equivalent (MPGe).

By Honda's telling of "which electric car has the best driving range," these numbers beat the Ford Focus Electric (105 MPGe, 76-mile range), Nissan Leaf (99 MPGe, 73-mile range), and Mitsubishi i-MiEV (112 MPGe, 62-mile range).

As noted, this comparison leaves out the Coda electric car. By its EPA ratings, the Coda consumes 46 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles of driving, and due to its 31 kilowatt-hour battery pack, the Coda electric car has an 88 mile EPA rated driving range, and 77/68/73 city/highway/combined miles/gallon equivalent (MPGe). While the Coda does manage to turn in a longer driving range, it's burdened by inefficiency causing it to consume more kilowatt-hours per mile than the other electric cars. Where the Honda Fit EV has a yearly fuel cost of just $500, the Coda yearly fuel cost is $850.

That's the story from Coda and Honda, what about the electric car neither mention, the Tesla Model S? Unfortunately the EPA ratings have not been released for that car, but a Tesla Motors blog post last month claimed that by the EPA "2 cycle test" it has a 320 mile driving range, and by the newer "5 cycle test" the Model S driving range is 265 miles. If Tesla were to speak freely they might shout "Take That Coda and Honda!"

But what does this mean for electric car buyers?

On the one hand this niggling over an 88 mile or 82 mile or 78 mile or 73 mile driving range doesn't strike one as a large difference. Yes, the longer driving range would makes the Coda more usable in more scenarios than the other electric cars, but is a few miles here and there that big of a difference? Not when compared to the 300 miles range of the Tesla Model S, right?

On the other hand, the Tesla Model S is priced out of range for most car buyers. The typical person will simply be unable to buy one, and will have to wait for the Gen III Tesla's which are promised to have a more affordable price. But the company has still racked up over 10,000 Model S reservations and over 1,000 Model X reservations, indicating even a pricy car can sell pretty well.

Tesla Motors has a strategy to design no-compromise electric cars that blow up the stereotypes of the limits of electric cars. For the time being that means Tesla's cars are beautiful, but pricey. The other automakers strategy is to focus on affordability, which means skimping on the battery pack, and providing a much shorter electric driving range. Like buying any other car, which electric car to purchase has to be weighed on a number of factors, one of which is driving range. A longer driving range, coupled with higher powered charging, gives more flexibility in when and where an electric car can be driven. While the Coda electric car offers the longest driving range and reasonably powerful 6.6 kilowatt charging, the Tesla Model S has the best driving range and charging speed, if you can afford the price.
