        • Salonul Detroit 2012 - Honda Accord Coupe Concept

Best trucks this year are all SUVs
Posted By On January 18, 2012

Detroit – While the exhibit floor at this year’s show is packed with pickup trucks, none of them are new. Instead, the focus is on revamped SUVs. Some, such as the fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder, is all new in a traditional large truck format. But, among the new nameplates, it’s the exception. The rest are smaller SUVs aimed at younger family buyers and also at ageing Baby Boomers who are downsizing.
For 2012, there wasn’t a single cargo bed among the three finalists for North American Truck of the Year. Instead, this annual award category was populated only by SUVs — the BMW X3, Range Rover Evoque and Honda CR-V. This year, Land Rover took top honours with its all-new Evoque. This is the first time Land Rover has won the North American Truck of the Year award. Decided by a group of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada, Truck of the Year is chosen based on the following categories — value for the dollar, innovation, handling, performance, safety and driver satisfaction.

                ACURA

This small SUV prototype shown here is the second generation of the Acura RDX. This five-passenger crossover is looking to not only add an updated fascia to market but also a new engine, transmission and all-wheel-drive system. Scheduled to launch this spring, the new engine will be a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 273 horsepower— 33 more than the outgoing model. The RDX also gets a six-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter and a new, lighter all-wheel-drive system. The RDX exterior gets a longer sculpted hood with lines that draw the design out on a longer frame and wider track. This feature also translates to larger door openings, increased passenger room and more cargo space. Also new will be Amplitude Reactive Dampers, a power rear tailgate and a new motion adaptive electronic power steering system. On the tech side, look for a new three-view rear camera, advanced navigation system and up to 15 gigabytes of music storage.

                BUICK

Buick rolled out the Encore, an all-new compact SUV that Ed Welburn, head of GM design, says is a cross among utility, luxury and practicality. The Encore taps into the young person’s need for luxury and the Boomers’ need for downsized practicality, says GM. Nicely styled, though small, it will seat five people and their cargo.
However, the Encore will also strive for fuel efficiency with a standard Ecotec 1.4L turbo four-cylinder and six-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the cabin is very Buick with a mix of dark and light tones accented with ice-blue ambient lighting and bright wood-grain trim. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel will be available.
The Encore is not due in showrooms until the first quarter of 2013.

                INFINITI

The all-new Infiniti JX35 has been unleashed here with a very specific mission — to do battle in the seven-passenger luxury SUV segment. To that end, it’s been well armed; firstly with a classic crossover look and interior appointments that feature premium materials and smart innovations. Infiniti claims the JX’s design offers extra legroom in all three rows while still leaving ample cargo space behind the third row. Innovative features include a multi-mode middle seat that opens to the third row without having to remove a child seat from the second row.
New technical innovations include an industry-first Backup Collision Intervention system, which also works with the Blind Spot Intervention protocol. This system not only warns but can also engage the brakes to avoid a collision. Offered with both front-wheel drive and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, the JX is driven by a 3.5L DOHC V6 mated to a sport-tuned CVT. The engine is rated at 265 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque.

                LEXUS

Large and luxurious, the Lexus LX 570 has debuted an updated outside look along with new interior features such as mahogany wood trim. Showing a new front spindle grille, new 20-inch alloy wheel design and upgraded interior, this eight-passenger SUV is meant to deliver luxury driving on-road and off.
For 2013, there are new LED daytime running lights, a new headlamp design and new larger fog lamp bezels. Tail lamps are also updated, while the rear licence plate surround gets a revised look and the tow hitch cover is more integrated. Both front and rear bumpers are refreshed and the side mirrors get integrated turn signals. Inside the eight-passenger cabin, the driver gets a new Easy Access seat (that moves with you), while the wheel and driver’s seat automatically retracts when the engine shuts off. Front seats get improved cooling ability and a series of cameras in the front grille and under the passenger outside mirror let the driver check hard-to-view areas. By pressing a button on the dash, the driver will get multiple views on the navigation screen. In addition, when off-road, the system remains active at less than 12 kilometres an hour in a simultaneous split-screen mode.

                NISSAN

The Pathfinder, Nissan’s best-known nameplate, takes its North American bow here — as the fourth generation of this well-known SUV. Though it’s still being called a concept, the all-new look and style of the sweeping Pathfinder body lines must be production bound. In fact, it’s probably the lack of a completed interior that resigns it to concept status. However, the Pathfinder is slated to go on sale at Canadian dealerships this fall, so Nissan will just have to be ready with its interior appointments. What we do know about the inside is that it will continue to offer three rows of seating, cargo/people flexibility and room for seven passengers. Also new in the Pathfinder will be a next-generation CVT and V6 engine that together are expected to increase combined city/highway fuel economy by 25%. A new four-wheel-drive system is being called “intuitive” and Nissan says that the Pathfinder’s towing capacity will be competitive within its segment.
Also debuting from Nissan is the e-NV200 Concept. Based on the popular Nissan NV200 multi-usage vehicle, which is available in Japan, Europe and China (it certainly looks to be the little brother of the NV commercial van), the e-NV200 Concept is a full electric vehicle. Unlike the larger NV, Nissan is suggesting that this smaller electric van may well be of equal use to businesses or families. Certainly, it will offer the typical flexible, roomy interior of a van -— while also being clean and green. The e-NV200 Concept shares its major drivetrain components with the Leaf. Its power is supplied by a lithium ion battery composed of 48 compact modules and a high-response 80-kW AC synchronous motor that generates 207 lb-ft of torque.
The 2013 Buick Encore is introduced during the press preview at the North American International Auto Show.

                    • Consumer Reports: Honda Fit Is Industry’s Best Value http://www.hondainthenews.com/consum...9s-best-value/

As savvy drivers know—and the experts at Consumer Reports confirm—it takes more than just a low MSRP for a car to offer high value. Factors such as ownership costs, fuel costs, reliability, utility and (at least) a competent driving experience can be just as important. And when CR took all those attributes into account for some 200 recently tested vehicles, the 2012 Honda Fit didn’t just represent a good value, it offered the best value—in the entire industry. According to Consumer Reports, “the versatile, fun-to-drive Fit scored among the top subcompact hatchbacks we’ve tested and has had outstanding reliability,” while also posting low ownership costs. The car also showcases an affordable starting price of $15,175, which still brings drivers plenty of standard features, including:
                      • A four-speaker, 160-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA sound system with a USB port and auxiliary jack
                      • Power windows/locks/side mirrors
                      • Air conditioning with an air-filtration system
                      • Cruise control
                      • Honda’s Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control System
                      • Anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution
                      • One of the most versatile interiors in the segment, thanks to the Fit’s “Magic Seat” flip-and-fold second-row seating

Thrify EPA ratings are part of the value package as well: The Fit is capable of achieving up to 28 mpg city/35 mpg highway/31 mpg combined.
Honda also continues to work to show “value” and “refinement” aren’t mutually exclusive. Thus, for 2012, the Fit benefits from extensive new sound insulation materials in its floor, front fender and A-pillars, along with thicker glass in its front corner windows. New console-mounted cup holders and console ambient lighting have been added as well, with the result being a quieter cabin with a more upscale feel.
The 2012 Honda Fit is on sale at local dealerships now.

Honda Begins Deliveries of 2013 Fit EV http://www.sys-con.com/node/2136408

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Honda delivered a 2013 Fit EV battery-electric vehicle to the city of Torrance today as one of the first major steps in the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program, a prelude to the retail market launch of the Fit EV with customers in California and Oregon this summer.
                      (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120120/LA39566)
                      (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20100923/HONDALOGO)
The delivery was marked by a ceremony at the Torrance City Hall, at which a key to the Fit EV was presented to Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto by Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda.
"This is an exciting day as we take another important step toward Honda's comprehensive vision for reducing CO2 emissions while at the same time advancing our relationship with the city of Torrance," said Steve Center. "Honda has a long history with electric vehicles starting with the introduction of our first battery-electric car, the EV Plus, nearly 15 years ago. With Honda's extensive experience and the real-world feedback from the city of Torrance, we will be even more prepared for the further customer adoption of electric vehicles."
Over the past year, Honda and the city of Torrance have worked together to gather input from Torrance residents about potential recharging station locations and jointly participated in numerous public awareness events with a Fit EV test vehicle. Honda and the city will continue to further these initiatives while also studying local government fleet usage of an electrified vehicle. The city of Torrance will also receive a Honda plug-in hybrid for additional testing at a later date.
"Today, in our partnership with Honda and their continuing efforts in renewable technologies, we will be driving into a more sustainable future," said city of Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto.
Honda unveiled the 2013 Fit EV at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and announced plans to begin leasing the 123 city-mile per charge (76 mile range combined adjusted city/highway)(1) battery-electric commuter vehicle to its U.S. customers in the summer of 2012. Equipped with a 20 kWh lithium-ion battery and 92 kW coaxial electric motor, the Fit EV battery can be fully recharged in as little as 3 hours when connected to a 240-volt circuit.
                      Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program
As part of the Honda Electric Vehicle Demonstration Program, Honda will test the Fit EV with Google Inc. and Stanford University, in addition to the City of Torrance, California. Each program participant will provide Honda with real-world feedback on the Fit EV. Individually, each participant will use the Fit EV to further initiatives such as research into human behavior and various usages like personal, fleet and car-sharing.
                      Honda Environmental Leadership
In addition to the Fit EV, Honda is a leader in the development of leading-edge technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. Honda has led the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) rankings of overall vehicle environmental performance since 2000, and a Honda vehicle has topped the list of America's greenest vehicles, from the America Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), for eleven consecutive years.
In 2006, Honda became the first automaker to announce voluntary CO2 emissions reduction targets for its global fleet of automobile, powersports and power equipment products and its global network of manufacturing plants. Today, the company is striving for even greater reductions in CO2 emissions that contribute to global climate change, while also working to minimize waste, water use and the total environmental footprint of its operations worldwide.

Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid - Prototype Drive

                      http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...+and+Driver%29

                      Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid

Two electric motors and a plug, coming soon to an Accord near you.

While in Japan for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, we visited Honda’s Twin Ring Motegi racing facility to see some of the company’s future products. Among them was a plug-in hybrid system, a prototype of which was installed in a current-generation Accord. While the car we drove is just a development mule, we can confidently say that a hybrid like this one will be part of the lineup when the next-generation Accord debuts for the 2013 model year.
Honda’s new plug-in system is totally different from the single-motor IMA drivetrain found in the Insight, CR-Z, and Civic hybrids. The main powertrain components are a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four and two electric motors—one to charge the battery pack and one to spin the wheels. The gas engine puts out 134 hp and 111 lb-ft of torque; the drive motor is good for 161 hp, and the generator is rated at 100 kW.
We first saw this system previewed at the 2010 L.A. auto show, and the specifications are largely unchanged. EV mode works up to 62 mph for 10 to 15 miles. The gasoline motor can spin the drive wheels directly, bypassing the electric motor and returning highway fuel economy closer to that of conventional cars, which typically fare better than hybrids at high speeds. How this works is the curious part. My exchange at a powertrain display stand with a Honda engineer who was barely conversant in English:
“So how does the transmission work?”
                      “No, no transmission.”
“Yeah, okay, so the motors make a CVT like in the Prius? How does that work here?”
“No, the motor is direct drive.”
We went back and forth in this manner for about five minutes. When I then asked how the gasoline engine works at highway speeds, he told me that there’s a single ratio with no transmission. Take this with a grain of salt, as Honda’s specification sheet says the car uses an “electric CVT.” Later follow-up didn’t provide a more clear answer, so a better explanation down the road could prove the above to be inaccurate.
Going back to the engineer’s explanation, multiple clutches allow the system to work in full-EV mode, full-gas mode, or a mix of the two. When driving the wheels, the engine is always using a tall highway ratio, and the electric motor uses a single-speed gear reduction as well. At slow vehicle speeds, the electric motor can work on its own or feed in to provide assist. Conversely, in cases where the battery’s charge is depleted, the gas engine can produce juice using the generator, which then sends power to the drive motor; in effect, this means that the engine would indirectly drive the wheels.
Our test drive of the Accord was limited to a few miles at low speeds, but the system looks very promising. You can get a decent amount of power without activating the combustion engine (we were unable to determine, and Honda isn’t willing to share, the parameters that allow for EV operation). When the engine does kick in, though, its speed isn’t relative to vehicle speed, and it drones a bit—but Honda has plenty of time to rectify that before we see such a system in production. There is a slight delay between pressing the pedal and the gas engine kicking in, a feeling that reminds us of the Chevrolet Volt.
The Honda’s all-electric range is much shorter than the Volt’s. On the upside, its 6-kWh battery is lighter than that car’s. And the charging time, at around two hours on a 120-volt source, is a lot more attractive than the 10 a Volt needs from the same outlet. Honda didn’t provide any fuel-economy targets or estimates for the system.
Toyota, Ford, and Hyundai all have hybrids in the mid-size-sedan segment, and Nissan will soon return with a new Altima hybrid. Ford’s current Fusion in particular is very nicely executed and decent to drive; the 2013 Fusion will become the first to offer a plug-in option with the Energi model. So far, though, no one has figured out a similar solution for improving highway fuel economy in a hybrid. For a company that sold the first hybrid in the U.S. market and has since been eclipsed by its competitors, it’s nice to see some innovative thinking from Honda.

Honda Civic Joins About.com’s Best of 2012 List

                      http://www.hondainthenews.com/honda-...-of-2012-list/

When it comes to providing U.S. buyers with a wide range of high-quality choices in the compact segment, one car stands out: The 2012 Honda Civic. In fact, “the Civic is hands-down the most comprehensive compact car on the market,” according to the experts at About.com, which recently named it one of the Best Cars of 2012.
The honor is a strong proof point for the success of Honda’s “To Each Their Own” positioning for the Civic, designed to showcase the many different models available to meet customer demands, including traditional coupe and sedan body styles; the performance-oriented Civic Si sedan and coupe; the high-efficiency Civic HF, capable of 41 mpg highway; the Civic Hybrid, boasting an EPA line of 44 mpg city/44 mpg highway/44 mpg combined; and the only manufacturer-built passenger car in America that runs on natural gas, the Civic Natural Gas—slated for nationwide availability in 2012 and also named Green Car of the Year.
The 2012 Civic was chosen as a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), too, recognizing the car’s top performance in tests for front, side, rear and rollover crash protection.
Further, as About.com’s Aaron Gold reports, “whichever Civic you choose, you’re virtually guaranteed years of trouble-free motoring. … I wish other automakers offered this much choice in their own compact cars.”
Just remember, however, they don’t; the only place you can get this many options in the highly competitive compact segment of the market is your local Honda dealership.

                      • Honda sells 800,000th hybrid :

                        http://www.leftlanenews.com/honda-se...th-hybrid.html

It’s taken Honda 12 years and 2 months, but the Japanese automaker has just completed the sale of its 800,000th hybrid vehicle. Although a notable milestone for Honda, the company is well behind Toyota ’s global hybrid sales of more than three-million units.

Honda didn’t reveal which of its hybrid models accounted for the company’s 800,000th sale, but Honda’s hybrid legacy dates back to the original Insight. Honda sold its first Insight hybrid in Japan in November of 1999.
Honda followed the Insight with hybrid versions of its Civic and Accord models before launching the second-generation of its Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology. Honda released the second-generation of its Insight in 2009 and has launched six new hybrid models over the last three years.
As a result of the new-found hybrid focus, Honda’s hybrid sales have grown tremendously in recent years. Honda’s global hybrid sales were up 30 percent to 200,000 last year, with 500,000 of the automaker’s 800,000 hybrid sales coming in the last five years.
Honda will continue its hybrid push with a gas-electric version of the Acura ILX sedan, marking the luxury brand’s first-ever hybrid offering.

                        • Consumer Reports: Smaller cars and family sedans deliver best deal

Despite the influx of new vehicles into the small- and budget-car marketplace, the Honda Fit remains on top in Consumer Reports’ list of best-value small cars. The Fit also reemerged as the best overall value among some 200 different vehicles that were analyzed.
Scores were calculated based on the five-year owner cost for each vehicle, along with CR’s road-test score and the organization’s own predicted reliability. The five-year owner cost estimates factor in depreciation, fuel costs, insurance premiums, financing interest, maintenance, repairs and sales tax. Depreciation is by far the largest owner-cost factor. In short, the better a car performs in CR’s road tests and reliability ratings, and the less it costs to own over time, the better its value.
Overwhelmingly, the best values come from Japanese automakers, including most of the top models in each category. Of the 48 best values in CR’s lists, 34 are from Japanese brands. Six models come from European brands (mostly Volkswagen), five come from American ones (mostly Ford), and three are from South Korean automakers.
Overall, the report finds that small cars and family sedans provide the best value. In addition to the Honda Fit, the Toyota Prius hybrid, diesel-powered Volkswagen Golf TDI (with manual transmission), Scion xD and Toyota Corolla also made CR’s list of best values in the small car category. Even the lowest-scoring small car, the Chevrolet Cruze, is close to average in overall value.
The family-sedans category is led by the four-cylinder Nissan Altima, which scored 75 percent higher than average. That’s followed by the four-cylinder Kia Optima, the Subaru Legacy, the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the four-cylinder Honda Accord. Larger and luxury vehicles are among the worst values overall, usually scoring at only about 70 percent of the average.
The analysis also revealed that wagons and small SUVs tend to provide better value than larger SUVs or minivans. Among wagons, the diesel-powered Volkswagen Jetta TDI with manual transmission is the top scorer, offering almost 70 percent more value than the average car. Other good choices are the Mazda5 microvan and Subaru Outback, with almost one and a half times the average value.
The top small SUVs are even better values than wagons. Leading that class are the four-cylinder Toyota RAV4 and the Subaru Forester, with scores that are 84 percent and 70 percent better than average, respectively. Midsized SUVs represent less of a bargain because of their higher purchase prices and fuel costs. Even the best midsized SUVs in the chart scored only a little better than average. Among luxury SUVs, only the BMW X3, Acura RDX and MDX, Infiniti EX and gas and hybrid versions of the Lexus RX had above-average value scores.
Minivans generally get better fuel economy than most midsized or larger SUVs, have more space than all but the largest SUVs and usually cost less. But as a class, subpar reliability drags them down. Even the most reliable minivans, the front-wheel drive versions of the Toyota Sienna, have only average reliability.
CR’s analysis also showed that hybrids can be relatively good values because of a combination of good fuel economy, low depreciation and above-average reliability. As a class, hybrids have an overall value that’s at least one and a half times that of the average model, and on average they cost about 65 cents per mile to drive over the first five years.

Soft now, but the minivan market is going to boom again

                          http://www.autonews.com/article/2012...120129990/1499

The U.S. minivan market is soft today, but I think in a few years it will take off. First, here's a short recap of 2011.
Last year 524,158 minivans were sold, a modest 4 percent increase from the previous year in an overall market that improved 10 percent. Sales were a far cry from the minivan record set in 2000: 1,371,234.
The battle for minivan supremacy ended last year with a new winner being crowned. A mere 567 vehicles separated the first place and second place finishers. When the dust settled and the sales were tabulated, the Toyota Sienna captured the crown.
Sienna's total, 111,429, is a 13 percent increase over its 2010 pace when Toyota's minivan finished No. 4. Last year's winner, the Chrysler's Town & Country, tumbled to fourth place with 94,320 sales.
The Dodge Grand Caravan ended 2011 in second place with 110,862 sales, followed by the Honda Odyssey at 107,068.
Enough about the past. As for the future, I expect a significant increase in minivan sales this decade -- maybe not a million-plus market, but certainly a few hundred thousand stronger.
                          Taking chances
That's because automakers will take chances to break away from the traditional, decades-old styling pattern -- and consumers will bite.
Take a look at Honda. Honda took a big a risk with the lightning-bolt beltline of the redesigned Odyssey, and it panned out in aces. The only reason Odyssey wasn't No. 1 last year was likely due to the shortage of parts caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Over at Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne has made it very clear that the next-generation Town & Country will not be confused with minivans of the past. The C700, which was just revealed at the Detroit auto show last week, was a striking example of the unconventional thinking in Chrysler's studio.
Designers have options with roof designs, too. For example, one way to distinguish a minivan might be to adopt a version of the roof featured on the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser, a popular wagon design from the mid-1960s to 1977.
The Olds' roof was raised several inches over the third-seat area and glass windows were added, giving passengers in the third row a panoramic view of the scenery. The roof was inspired by the 1950s buses General Motors created for Greyhound.
For a minivan, raising the roof above the second and third passenger seats would increase headroom, a common complaint in some minivans today, plus improve exit and entry into the second seat. The seat heights could be raised a little, improving comfort.
That elevated roof would distinguish a minivan plus provide some extra comfort.
This decade, expect the dreaded soccer mom image to fade away as minivan design is reinvented.

                          • Honda Fit electric vehicle enters US market, to be made available for lease in select cities

                            http://www.nydailynews.com/autos/honda-fit-electric-vehicle-enters-market-made-lease-select-cities-article-1.1011583?localLinksEnabled=false

Just two months after debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Honda Fit electric vehicle has made its first entry into the U.S. market in the city of Torrance, California.
The Fit EV is an electrified version of the automaker's popular Fit model which uses a lithium-ion battery to provide a range of some 76 miles (122 km) before a recharge, which takes three hours using a 240-volt circuit.

Honda delivered the first Fit EV last week to Torrance, which is the first in a series of US partners to be leasing the model before its rollout to showrooms for sale.

Other leasers should be able to get their hands on the model from summer, Honda said at the LA Auto Show.

Leasing is an increasingly popular way for automakers to test electric vehicles before putting them on general sale in showrooms -- and sometimes, it's even possible to inject a little fun into it.

Honda Siel plans to build small sedan to take on Dzire:

New Delhi: Honda Siel, which makes cars such as the City, Jazz, Brio and Civic, is planning to introduce a low-cost sedan, which would also be the smallest sedan from its stable. The compact sedan that is being developed on the platform of its small car Brio (starting price R4 lakh) would be retailed at a starting price of around R5 lakh, competitively priced to take on Maruti’s Swift Dzire, which is the leader in the small sedan segment. Honda’s new car at 3,995 metre will be just under the 4 metre mark that allows the car to remain within the 10% excise duty bracket, rather than the 22% applicable on bigger vehicles. The Brio sedan will be powered by the same 1.2-litre engine on which the Jazz and Brio run. When contacted a company spokesperson said, “We will not launch any vehicle this year.” According to auto analysts, Honda’s move is in the right direction to spread out into newer segments to get back the market share it had lost to players like Volkswagen, Hyundai and Maruti. Honda Siel sold just 1,072 cars during December 2011 versus 5,135 units in December 2010.
The main reasons behind this drastic drop in market share is Honda’s absence in the rapidly growing diesel and small car segments.
In mid-2011, Honda launched its small car Brio at an attractive price but could not meet demand due to disruption in component supplies owing to floods in Thailand last year. Another brand, the Jazz, also could not garner enough sales for two years because of pricing. After substantial price cuts last year, though, sales started to pick up but it met with the same fate of shortage of component supply from Thailand. Honda operated at less than 50% capacity in six months of this fiscal.
Of late, the City, the largest selling sedan from the Honda stable, has also been on the ebb as the diesel variants of sedans like VW Vento, Maruti SX4 and Hyundai Verna, among others, have eaten into its market. Now, it is learnt that the company is planning to introduce diesel variants of both City and Brio by this fiscal end.
Honda has already begun production of the new City, while the rollout of small cars Brio and Jazz will start by the middle of the next month. The waiting period for Brio and the new City is about four to eight weeks, while that for Jazz is three to six months. The company hopes to completely utilise the existing plant capacity of 100,000 units in 2012 and it is likely to take decision on further investment in its production line at the Tapukara plant by middle of 2012.

Honda sells 800,000-hybrids 12 years after Insight debut

                            http://green.autoblog.com/2012/01/25/honda-sells-800-000-hybrids-12-years-after-insight-debut/

Honda Motor Co. sold its 800,000th hybrid-electric vehicle last month, about 12 years after the Japanese automaker sold its first. The company announced the milestone as it prepares to sell the first North American hybrid under its Acura luxury badge.

Honda debuted hybrid sales with the first-generation
Insight in late 1999. That model achieved fuel economy of about 80 miles per gallon on the Japanese test cycle, making the model the most fuel-efficient among any gas-powered vehicle at the time. Honda, which today sells seven hybrid models in 50 countries, will start selling the Acura ILX hybrid in North America this spring.

Last year, Honda sold almost 31,600 hybrids in the U.S.. That's down 5.9 percent from a year earlier and about one-sixth of what Toyota sold in the U.S. Honda's U.S. hybrid sales, like Toyota's, were believed to be hampered by supply issues stemming from the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last March.

                            By comparison,
Toyota, the world's biggest maker of hybrids, sold its two millionth Prius hybrid worldwide in October 2010. Toyota introduced the Prius to Japan in 1997 and to Europe and North America three years later.

                            CR-V joins Honda Canada's lineup

                            http://www.simcoe.com/news/news/article/1285952

                            Ceremony held Monday

                            Honda Canada

ALLISTON - The very first of the 2012 Honda CR-V SUVs rolled off the production line Monday at Honda Canada Manufacturing (HCM) in Alliston. To mark the occasion, a special line-off ceremony was held at Plant 2. Four associates dressed in white coveralls did the honour of driving the shiny black SUV from the end of the line, across the floor to the welcoming stage, where they were joined by well over 100 applauding plant employees.
Now in its fourth generation, the CR-V will be the fourth vehicle on HCM's current production lineup. Its addition also makes the Alliston facility the first plant in North America to produce four distinct models, in addition to the Civic, MDX and ZDX.
"Being able to produce a range of models on the same line demonstrates the manufacturing flexibility of Honda's plants," said HCM president Nobuyuki Sanui.
The CR-V is the company's second best-selling vehicle, with the first being the Civic. Last year, the CR-V sold 25,000 units in Canada, and the company hopes to push that number to 30,000 in 2012.
"The CR-V is a global model for Honda, produced in 10 countries and sold in 160 different nations," said Sanui. "Producing a global model requires much cooperation from Honda facilities around the world."
Honda has had a lot to celebrate recently, with 2011 marking the plant's 25th anniversary in Alliston. However, last year also had its fair share of challenges. Disruptions were caused to Honda's business operations by parts shortages due to two major natural disasters overseas.
But conditions have improved considerably, which has the company feeling optimistic for 2012. Following last year's slowdown, HCM is back to peak production levels at about 1,600 vehicles per day between the two assembly plants.
"We had to deal with production disruptions caused by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the flood in Thailand," Sanui said. "But I'm especially proud of our ability to restore our production capabilities after these events."
New Tecumseth Mayor Mike MacEachern spoke at the event, congratulating the manufacturer for its years of success in the community.
"The town of New Tecumseth is proud of our strong ongoing partnership with Honda," he said. "We're excited that HCM is now in the production fourth generation CR-V here at Plant 2. We are also proud to now be the official home of the CR-V, as all of the new 2012 CR-Vs that will be sold in Canada will be built in HCM's award-winning plant."
MacEachern said the company's decision to have the vehicle built in Alliston will do more than just benefit the local community.
"Producing the vehicle here not only provides and important economic investment in our town, but our country as well," he said. "It's an honour to have HCM in our community, as it has a worldwide reputation for continuous quality and innovation."
Approximately 4,200 associates currently work for HCM in Alliston. MacEachern, who worked as a summer student in production in Plant 1, said he knows first-hand of the quality of work the associates put into Honda's vehicles.
"I certainly have my hat off you all the associates, you work hard day to day, you do a fantastic job, and the results of your efforts really make us proud here in New Tecumseth," he added.
The first generation CR-V hit the market in 1997 and has since seen three redesigns. The second generation was released in 2002, and the third followed in 2007.
Since 1987, Honda has built close to six million vehicles and invested more than $2.6 billion in Canada. The company also purchases more than $1.1 billion in goods from Canadian suppliers every year.
Ontario's Minister of Economic Development and Innovation Brad Duguid commended the company for its continued investment at the Alliston plant.
"The inauguration of Honda's new CR-V at the Alliston plant in Ontario signals the strength of the auto sector in Ontario, new momentum for Honda and demonstrates confidence in the province's economy," Duguid said in a release. "This move helps secure our position as a top auto manufacturing hub in North America and protect valuable sector jobs."

2012 Honda Civic Si - F UR K ( 23 de poze sunt pe site-ul lor, nu le pot muta )

1004 Reasons Why Bisimoto Engineering’s 2012 K-Turbo Civic Is a Cut Above the Rest.

This has basically become a routine for us here at Super Street: every year, a month or so after the annual SEMA show occurs, we make our way down to Ontario, CA to visit our good friend Bisi Ezerioha. It’s always nice to catch up with Bisi and his interesting sense of humor, but the main reason why we head out there is to get a better look at his latest, and possibly greatest, new project. We’ve come to expect a lot from Bisi over the years because he never disappoints. If anything, he’s always surprised us and exceeded our expectations. Bisi started out as the naturally-aspirated single-cam Honda king, and then captured the attention of the entire import automotive community by building a 700-plus horsepower, turbocharged Civic Wagon. One company that took a vested interest in Bisimoto’s many accomplishments was Honda of America. They knew he had the uncanny ability to build what seemed impossible and provided him with the opportunity last year to tinker with the then-newly released hybrid Honda CR-Z. Unless you’ve been living under that proverbial rock, you’ve probably already heard of his fully-operational hybrid, turbocharged, 533hp CR-Z. If by chance you haven’t, please kindly pull up a Google search and educate yourself. The Bisimoto CR-Z garnered such critical acclaim and positive reception, that Honda once again contacted Bisi for the 2011 SEMA project. This time around, they had another unique undertaking in the form of the newly-unveiled 2012 Honda Civic Si.

This new Civic was, by all accounts, completely uncharted territory. Unlike years past, this Civic was for the US consumer. That’s right, no Japanese domestic market. On top of it being an entirely new chassis, beneath the hood sprang another surprise: the new K24A7 engine. Nobody had laid a hand on this Civic or its motor yet, but uncharted territory is what Bisi is all about. Honda provided him with a blank canvas to do as he pleased, and after seeing his reveal at the 2011 SEMA event, he didn’t fail in his efforts to blow everyone’s collective minds. Pardon our French, but he built the ever-living shit out of this Civic.
“With the 2012 Civic Si, we really wanted to take elements from drag racing, time attack, and street tuning to encompass the idea that we can create a ‘Civic for everyone’ while maintaining all the signature Bisimoto Engineering elements,” Bisi explains. “We have taken styling aspects from all three genres and devoted special attention to the aesthetics for this year’s build. Technology and efficient power-production has always been our forte, but we want the public to know that we also have style in mind. We have no fear of the unknown and we are always willing to take risks.”

In terms of visual appeal, their 2012 Civic is perhaps their best “looking” vehicle to date. The exterior is emblazoned in a full-laminated body wrap like the CR-Z and continues to wear the signature “Bisimoto blue”, but additions of Carbon Creations front and side carbon splitters make for a more menacing look. The chute finds home in the rear of the Civic again, paired up with a custom aluminum trunk-mounted rear wing. A teardrop-shaped cut-out in the hood offers a hint of what’s going on underneath. The biggest departure from his previous projects in the past is the aggressive stance of the Civic. The chassis rides low to the pavement via prototype Eibach Springs coilovers and sits on newly released 18-inch Eins Gramm wheels. The wheel, which translated from German means “one gram”, is manufactured and sold exclusively by Bisimoto Engineering.

The muscle of the 1004hp operation, the Turbonetics 72mm turbo.

Aesthetic enhancements are definitely a plus, but the centerpiece of this build still lies within the power plant of the Si coupe. Bisi immediately pulled the K24Z7 motor from the Civic upon receipt and tore it apart to begin the power-making process. He had planned from the get-go to boost the 2.4 liter engine so steps were taken to fortify the internals and ensure that it could handle the stress from the 72mm mid-frame Turbonetics turbocharger. Engine teardown and re-assembly was all done in-house with the exception of the engine block itself, which was sent out to Golden Eagle for sleeving. Golden Eagle was also responsible for the custom intake manifold that was built to Bisi’s very own specifications. An additional plate was welded to the top of the intake manifold so that the AEM high-output inductive ignition coils could be mounted. K-series motors have been designed from the factory to have a coil-over-plug set-up but Bisimoto went a different route and decided to go with external coils with MSD ignition wires running back to the head. The AEM coils not only provide more proficient spark over the OEM units, but also make for an unexpected and very unusual look inside the engine bay.

" “Bisimoto engineering has always been about making reliable power in vehicles that are pushed to their limits.”
                              "
The angled turbocharger set-up, custom intake manifold, and external coil set-up make for a very interesting look inside the engine bay, but these components stand out so much more because the bay has been devoid of all unnecessary items. Wiring extraordinaire Ryan “Rywire” Basseri spent many nights at the Bisimoto facility creating custom, tucked brake lines as well as a one-off mil-spec electrical engine harness. Wired to an AEM Series 2 Engine Management System and tuned on E85 flex-fuel, the Bisimoto-spec K24Z7 was able to produce a mind-blowing 1003.6 horsepower and produce torque numbers of 622LB-FT. Amazing numbers for a motor that still remains a relative unknown to most other aftermarket tuning companies.

Inside the cockpit of the Bisimoto 2012 Civic, only what is essential was allowed to stay. The ninth generation Civic introduced a very intricate “intelligent Multi-informational display” (i-Mid) that allows users to customize whatever they want to see on their dashboard but even that has been removed. In its place sits a much simpler Racepak IQ3 unit that provides only the most pertinent engine information. The back half of the interior has been completely gutted to make room for the Steen-fabricated roll cage and stock front seats exchanged for Buddy Club P1 racing buckets. The winner of “most interesting interior mod” would have gone to the mini Honda first aid kit if it weren’t for the switch box from a fighter jet that’s mounted to the area where the OEM navigation unit once sat. The switch box is a cool piece that’s been added to not only give a distinctive look, but to also manage boost functions from the AEM EMS and traction control.

“We have very big plans ongoing for this Civic,” Bisi says. “It made a triumphant debut at the 2011 SEMA show but we have full intentions of making use of the power that this vehicle produces. Time was devoted to making the outside package presentable and relevant but this is not just merely a display project. Bisimoto Engineering has always been about making reliable power in vehicles that are pushed to their limits. Currently, I am using this car to test new lubricant technologies for Bisimoto along with AEM engine management protocols. Once that is completed, fuels from VP will be tested and we will take a look at different prototype gearboxes from Quaife before we ultimately test the 2012 Civic on the track.”

For the ninth generation Civic, Honda of America came out with a new campaign, which they dubbed “To Each Their Own”. The idea was to push ultimate personalization and to allow owners the ability to turn their Civics into a true reflection of self. At 1004 horsepower, a new signature wheel, and a unique full-body graphical livery, there’s no doubt about whose Civic this is. It’s all Bisimoto Engineering, and you best believe that there’s nothing else like it in the entire world.

                                http://www.thestar.com/wheels/articl...-friendly-fuel

Why natural gas is not an environmentally friendly fuel

A reader asks: When is someone from Wheels going to write about compressed natural gas and why you can't get it?
This looks like a job for Green Wheels.
After all, last November, the Green Car Journal declared the Honda Civic Natural Gas its 2012 “Green Car of the Year.”
For eight years, the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy has crowned it “Greenest Vehicle.”
And the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calls all versions of the Civic Natural Gas, “the cleanest internal-combustion vehicle on Earth.”
With such environmental accolades, and its relatively low price, natural gas “makes more sense now than it ever did,” the reader said.
“But, yet, nobody wants you to have it.”
So, I’m writing today about natural gas cars but I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint our correspondent.
The Green Car Journal was wrong to honour any car powered by natural gas, and I hope the things don’t proliferate, although that’s the unhappy trend. After years as a prototype, the GX (which is what Honda has branded the Civic Natural Gas car) went on limited sale to American consumers in 2006 and the new model will be available in most states, although not yet in Canada.
The technology does offer benefits. According to the EPA, at the tailpipe it cuts carbon-dioxide emissions — they contribute to climate change — by 25 per cent compared with gasoline, and reduces various toxic pollutants and dangerous particles by between 50 and 95 per cent.
The problem is that you can’t count only what spews from the tailpipe. Fuel sources, and their impacts, must be part of the equation, and on that score natural gas is rapidly moving from green to black.
That’s because, increasingly, it’s found as shale gas.
Shale gas is embedded in porous rock. The retrieval process is called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. In essence, it means drilling a well, then forcing down water and chemical "fracking fluids," some of them toxic, to crack open the surrounding rock and free the gas for collection.
Fracking has been around for decades but is taking off as techniques improve and conventional sources of natural gas dwindle.
Fracking shatters the underground structure through which water, and sometimes oil, flows. The consequences are unpredictable, and potentially calamitous if gas or toxic chemicals should enter the water supply.
Fracking is believed to have caused an Alberta oil well blowout last week, and the U.S. EPA recently found fracking chemicals in underground water out in Wyoming. There, predictably, the oil industry is blaming the study, not its activity (a response that recalls tobacco company denials of links between smoking and lung cancer).
The process also consumes vast amounts of water; nearly a billion litres for one northern B.C. well. It also lets methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas, escape into the atmosphere.
Fracking is banned in France and Bulgaria, on hold in Quebec and under review in Nova Scotia, but expanding elsewhere.
The Council of Canadians estimates there are 175,000 fracked wells in Canada, mainly in Alberta. A Calgary company is buying drilling rights in southwestern Ontario and near Blue Mountain.
U.S. President Barack Obama this week promised that his administration “will take every possible action” to develop shale gas. The American Energy Information Administration says production increased an average 48 per cent each year between 2006 and 2010 and estimates that by 2035, fracked sources will comprise nearly half of steadily rising natural gas production, compared to only 16 per cent in 2009.
If natural gas replaces gasoline, it will simply boost demand for fracking. Canada and the U.S. might become self-sufficient in transportation fuel, but at too high a cost to health and the environment.
So no natural gas vehicle can be the Green Car of this or any year.

This all-new Honda Civic isn't a huge departure from the previous version.
In terms of looks alone, especially from the front, the new model could easily be mistaken for the previous generation which was sold in South Africa for the past five years, and also won SA's Car of the Year in 2007.
That said, the ninth-generation compact sedan is an all-new model with more efficient engines, repackaged interior and redesigned chassis.

                                IT'S A SIPPER

On the engine front, this generation sees the introduction of a 1.6-litre engine, which brings the base price of the range down to just below the R210 000 mark.
The engine still employs Honda's two-stage i-VTEC system and produces respectable outputs of 92kW at 6500rpm and 151Nm at 4300rpm. According to Honda, you can expect a 0-100km/h sprint time of 9.6 seconds at the coast, a 200km/h top speed and average fuel consumption of 6.7 litres per 100km.

Nip-and-tuck operation is more obvious frpm the rear.
                                .

The familiar 1.8-litre engine is also available, and it's been updated to reduce its fuel appetite. The motor puts out 104kW at 6500rpm and 174Nm at 4300rpm for a claimed 8.8-second 0-100 run. The top speed and fuel consumption match those of the 1.6.
Both engines can be had with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox.

                                BUT IT HUFFS AND PUFFS

Strangely, no 1.6-litre models were available to sample at the car's Knysna-based media launch this week, but our writer, Jesse Adams, did get to sample the 1.8 with both gearboxes:
“As you'd probably guess, these small sedans aren't known for their performance prowess, especially considering the brand's focus on greener motoring, and some of the test route's long straights saw the Civic huffing and puffing quite heavily.” Jesse said.
“A short fifth gear ratio (manuals are 5-speed only) didn't help the situation either, and the automatics also rev quite high at standard South African b-road speeds.

Interior has been tidied up to the point where it looks almost understated.
                                .

                                A GOOD STEER

“Thankfully the Civic's direct steering, which has been one of its strong points for decades over various models, makes up for lack of grunt,” Jesse added.
“It's a new electronically assisted system that keeps the Honda-typical lightness, and over some of Oudtshoorn's more challenging passes the car turned out to be quite a keen handler.”
For the record this new Civic, like the best of its rivals, boast a fully independent multi-link suspension set-up at the back in addition to a revised McPherson strut suspension at the front end.

                                SMALLER, YET ROOMIER

From a packaging point of view, though, the new Civic is a completely different car.
More space efficient, it offers more interior room despite the car's length being reduced by 15mm and the wheelbase by 30mm. Luggage room is also up, from 389 litres to 440.
Jesse describes the cabin as being similar to that of its predecessor, but he did take a liking to its new colour display in the two-tiered instrument cluster, which displays on-board computer info as well as iPod album art and entertainment details.
That said, he was disappointed a little about the speedometer placement, which just as it is in other current Hondas, is obstructed by the steering wheel: “A silly oversight in my opinion, although some taller journalists commented it wasn't a problem for them.”

                                AND IT'S KITTED

Finally, the range offers three trim levels and even the entry-level Comfort is well equipped with the likes of 15-inch alloy wheels (with full-sized spare), MP3/CD/Aux audio system, air conditioning and electric windows and mirrors.
In addition to all that, the Comfort trim adds curtain airbags and heated side mirrors to the mix while the flagship Elegance throws in 16-inch alloys, automatic climate control, leather seats, multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, Bluetooth cellphone connectivity as well as USB and iPod slots.
