  • Honda preocupación por derechos humanos

    By EFE

    MADRID

Honda Freed “premium compact MPV” launched: RM112,980

    http://paultan.org/2010/04/22/honda-...ched-rm112980/

Honda Malaysia has launched the Freed, which the company describes as a “premium compact MPV” in a new market segment. The “premium” slant is meant to distance this seven-seater from rivals’ compact MPVs, and the Freed’s price of RM112,980 (OTR with insurance) backs up the positioning – it’s costlier than the Nissan Grand Livina 1.8 and the much larger Toyota Innova, for instance.
The Freed has a unique trump card however – automatic sliding doors that can be operated from the key fob (and from within the car, of course). These doors come with anti-pinch sensors and open to a gap of 600 mm. Honda also points out the low 410 mm height from the ground to the Freed’s floor; this plus grip handles enable easy access for children and the elderly, it says.

The doors open to a “walkthrough cabin” that has four “captain chairs” for the first two rows and third row seats that fold up sideways, like in old scool 4X4s. Up front is a dual layer dashboard with the instrument binnacle situated ahead of the driver. Everything else is in the middle – an aftermarket 2-DIN Alpine stereo with USB port, a chunky gearknob and the air-con controls. The parking brake is a foot brake. Safety kit wise, the Freed comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist and “neck-shock mitigation seat” – the latter basically reduces whiplash injury in an accident, although Honda’s term for it sounds very bombastic.
The Freed sits on the Jazz/City platform, although its 2,740 mm wheelbase is quite a bit longer than the City’s 2,550 mm. The wheelbase is actually 140 mm longer than the Grand Livina’s although the Nissan is longer overall. The drivetrain is similar to the what we’re familiar with in the City – a 1.5-litre single-cam i-VTEC paired to five-speed automatic. For this application, the gear ratios are shorter and the 116 bhp/146 Nm engine makes 2 bhp less and 1 Nm more than the City. The steering is EPS, suspension consists of MacPherson struts up front and torsion beam at the rear, while the brakes are front discs and rear drums.

We’ve already driven the Freed and visited the Indonesian plant where it rolls out from, and our impressions and verdict will be coming your way soon. For the meantime, check out the live images from this morning’s launch.

    • Li Nian “Everus” sedan – Chinese market Honda concept

Honda will be exhibiting this Li Nian concept car at Auto China 2010 in Beijing this year. Li Nian is basically a Chinese market only brand that Honda and their Chinese partner Guangqi Honda Automobile (previously known as Guangzhou Honda Automobile – the namechange happened in April 2009) have been working on.

This is not the first Li Nian car we’ve seen – a compact SUV concept built on the Jazz platform as well as an open top roadster that looks like it’s meant to be a somewhat like a next generation Honda S2000 was first shown at Auto China 2010 in April 2008.

This latest Li Nian Concept is a sedan that I’m assuming is called the “Everus” and it looks something like a Honda City with rear design cues from the Honda Airwave and a large Acura-like grille on the front. The photos don’t really give any indication on what size the vehicle is – the front looks very grand like it belongs on a larger vehicle but the side profile looks like a smaller sedan.

I am guessing that this is the City-based C-segment sedan that Guangqi Honda said they were working on back in September 2008. Honda in China is sold by two companies – Dongfeng Honda and Guangqi Honda. In the C-segment market, the Honda Civic is sold by Dongfeng Honda, leaving Guangqi Honda with no C-segment sedan competitor.

Look after the jump for hi-res images of the new Li Nian.

      Honda doubles operating profit

Japanese automaker Honda Motor doubled its operating profit in the year to March thanks to demand in emerging markets and the cheap yen, a report says.
Honda's year-on-year operating profit shot up roughly 90 per cent to 360 billion yen ($A4.15 billion) for the previous financial year, the business daily Nikkei reported on Friday, without citing sources.
The figure exceeds previous expectations for a profit of 320 billion yen ($A3.69 billion), it said.
The report comes as its rival Toyota struggles over a mass recall crisis that led to ratings agency Moody's on Thursday downgrading the beleaguered automaker.
Honda has a high operating efficiency and the brand's popularity in emerging markets has been boosted through strong sales of motorcycles, the report said.
The cheap yen against the US dollar has pushed up profits by more than 10 billion yen ($A115.35 million), it added.
Company officials were not immediately available for a comment.
Honda said last month it would build a second motorcycle factory in India, employing about 2,000 people, to meet surging demand.
Japanese automakers and their rivals are competing for a slice of the fast-growing market in emerging nations such as India and China, where a burgeoning middle class is boosting spending on cars, motorcycles and other goods.

Honda upbeat on sales of new MPV

KUALA LUMPUR: Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd is targeting to sell 1,600 units annually of the Honda Freed, its newly launched premium compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).
Managing director and chief executive officer Toru Takahashi said the company was confident of achieving the sales target. “Today (yesterday), we received 150 bookings for this model,” he told reporters at the launch of the model here.
The MPV, manufactured in Indonesia, was currently on sale in Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia, he said.
The contemporary looking model is powered by the 1.5L i-VTEC engine. Its price on the road starts from RM112,980 to RM115,180.
As of March this year, Honda had sold 155,134 units of the Freed in Japan, 12,151 units in Indonesia, 1,0441 units in Thailand, and 43 units in Singapore and Brunei.
Poised to be a smart choice complete with practicality, performance and style, the model appealed particularly to professional urbanites with young families, Takahashi said.
“The MPV also offers a comfortable ride for seven passengers and the third row of passenger seats can be converted into additional cargo space to meet endless possibilities and needs of its occupants,” he said.
Honda Malaysia recently announced a buoyant month as its March sales hit 4,041 units, the highest monthly record in the company’s local history.
Just three months into the new year, Honda Malaysia has already hit 25% of its annual target of 40,000 units. — Bernama

Honda (Accord) CrossTour is headed to China

        Date: April 22, 2010 23:29
        Submitted by: Jeff
        Source: Honda Press Release
        Credibility Rating: Not Specified

BEIJING, China, April 23, 2010 --- Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President & CEO Takanobu Ito today, announced the following in his speech at the 2010 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition:

Last year, Honda's sales achieved an all-time record of 580,000 units in China, the world's largest automobile market, being well received by numerous customers in China. Honda will continue its efforts to become the "automaker closest to customers" in China, which fulfills customer needs from their view points, by introducing environmentally-responsible models and through further collaboration with its partners, Guangzhou Automobile and Dongfeng Motor.

        1) Honda's environmental initiatives and introduction of hybrid models
Honda will strive to be the forerunner for environmental and energy technologies, by being committed to further improvement of fuel economy and reduction of CO2 emissions in all of its products: motorcycles, automobiles and power products.

To comply with the increasing fuel economy regulations and consumer environmental awareness in China, Honda will continue to proactively introduce environmentally-responsible models to the market. Two hybrid models produced in Japan, the Insight and CR-Z, will be sold within the Chinese market before the end of 2012, further expanding Honda's environmentally-responsible lineup. In addition, Acura will introduce its first hybrid model within the next three years.

        2) Honda operations in China - ahead of other automakers
In order to create another new market in China, Honda is introducing its premium crossover utility vehicle, the Crosstour, which highly combines the comfort of a luxury sedan and the outstanding utility of an SUV. The Crosstour will be produced by Guangqi Honda with sales to begin by the end of year 2010.

Honda is also exhibiting a concept model of the LI NIAN brand, Guangqi Honda's proprietary automobile brand. The mass-production model of this concept car will be introduced at the Guangzhou Motor Show, scheduled at the end of this year.

Moreover, Dongfeng Honda will also begin its original brand. This will result in both Guangqi Honda and Dongfeng Honda having their original brands, which will further strengthen the Honda group as a whole.

Honda to Export Three-Door Civic Type R Euro to Japan

Honda has announced that it will sell a limited run of the 2010 Type R Euro in Japan this fall. The Euro version is built in the U.K. and was, until last fall, only sold to European buyers. Japanese customers had to make do with a four-door sedan until their clamoring convinced Honda to send about 2000 copies of the hatch to Honda’s homeland. Honda says 90 percent of the imported vehicles have been sold since November, which is why they’re sending more for the 2010 model year.
The Type R employs a 2.0-liter inline-four that wails up to 8400 rpm and makes 221 hp at 8000 rpm and 159 lb-ft of torque at 6100 rpm. The car comes only with a six-speed manual transmission and wears stiffer springs and anti-roll bars than more pedestrian Civics.

Once again, we’re disappointed we get nothing like this in America, where such a car would slot nicely above the Civic Si. You offer the Type R in Europe, Japan, Australia, and South Africa—so how about you create one for us, Honda? After all, with the death of the S2000, there’s a vacancy in the sporty halo department.

Honda to launch 3 hybrid models in China in 2-3 yrs

Honda Motor Co said it will start selling several of its hybrid models in China in the next two to three years, aiming to capitalise on expected incentives from Beijing to promote green vehicles.

The company will introduce its Acura hybrid model in China within three years, and its Insight and CR-Z hybrids from 2012, Chief Executive Takanobu Ito told a media briefing on Friday, the opening day of the Beijing auto show, China's largest.

Last year, Honda sold about 580,000 cars in China, up 22.5 percent from 2008, lagging the overall passenger market's more than 50 per cent rise. The pace has picked up this year, with January-March sales surging 43 per cent from the year before.

"Sales this year have maintained this record pace," Ito said, in reference to China's breakneck growth under raft of incentives by Beijing to boost consumer spending.

One of Honda's joint ventures, Dongfeng Honda, with Dongfeng Motor Group Co, is showcasing a new concept model for its own brand at the show, called Linian. The brand is due to begin selling its first car next year, delayed from the originally planned 2010.

Beijing 2010: Honda Li Nisn Everus sedan concept

Li Nian Everus Sedan – Click above for high-res image gallery

The Beijing Motor Show is well under way, and Honda is showing off a new concept slated for the Chinese market. Called the Li Nian Everus, the car is the fruit of a partnership between the Japanese automaker and its Chinese partner, Guangqi Honda Automobile. We don't have too many details on the sedan other than the fact that at this point, it's nothing more than a concept.

Judging by the renderings, we're tempted to guess this thing has more than a little Civic DNA swimming around in its blood stream, though it looks like Honda raided the Acura design department for the car's less-than-traditional nose and rear-end.

Speaking of the Civic, it would make some sense if Honda swapped a little sheet metal and called it a day. Honda's compact is sold under the Dongfeng Honda banner, leaving Guangqi Honda Automobile without a comparable model. Our guess is that when the Everus comes to market, it will be slightly more upscale and boast more standard niceties than its sibling.

          • Honda Freed Review – first impressions in Indonesia

We were in Indonesia earlier this year to briefly try out the new Honda Freed around Honda Prospect Motor’s test track. It was a very short drive but it did give us some sufficient first impressions of Honda’s compact “premium” MPV.

The Honda Freed is the first time in a long time that a car manufacturer has attempted to sell a decidedly JDM styled vehicle here in Malaysia. You see, it is quite clear that our taste buds and those of the Japanese domestic market are quite different. There are plenty of little vehicles that look like the Mitsubishi TownBox all over their streets yet when the Proton Juara was introduced here, we couldn’t get used to its styling.

But for some reason when JDM large MPVs are brought into Malaysia they gain “luxury vehicle” status. Let’s face it – the Alphard is not a particularly good looking vehicle. It’s a gigantic box. But its large and it can ferry many people with comfort, from the first row all the way to the third row. For an MPV – the more space, the better. And the vehicle must also be able to transport all that cube inches of interior space safely, efficiently and a bonus would be swiftly.

The Freed is not the first time Honda has made a vehicle that looks like that. It actually looks like a smaller version of the StepWGN, which is another JDM-only model, although you can easily buy one through a grey importer here in Malaysia. I was actually quite surprised when Honda announced that it would be making the Freed in Indonesia. That also meant that Honda was definitely going to sell it throughout the ASEAN market. Would we be able to get used to its looks?

But still, the idea of a Honda in the compact MPV segment was appealing to me – Hondas generally drive quite decently and having a more exciting choice in a market full of Nissan Grand Livinas and Toyota Avanzas made me look forward to it. A Grand Livina type of vehicle with the DNA of what typically defines a Honda is something that I was guessing that Malaysians would find quite appealing. But then I heard the indicated price range and I was a little disappointed. It wasn’t going to be an MPV that everyone would be able to consider side by side with its competition, but more of a price level up.

At RM113,980 it isn’t a super big margin over the 1.8 liter Nissan Grand Livina but this was a 1.5 liter MPV so it would be more logical to compare it to the 1.6 liter Nissan Grand Livina instead. Is the huge mark-up because of the more generous equipment level really worth it when an MPV is essentially a box that’s supposed to bring as many people as you can as comfortably as possible? The larger 1.8 liter engine in the Nissan may not be a horsepower king with less than 10 horsepower on top of the Freed’s, but when it comes to normally aspirated engines there’s no replacement for displacement and the 1.8 liter engine has much more torque (174Nm at 4,800rpm) for you to move all your passengers around easier.

So how does it do ferrying people in it? One of the factors we have to look at would be its size. The Honda Freed has a really long wheelbase – it is the longest variant of the Jazz/City platform. And normally a long wheelbase equates to lots of space on the inside. But for the Freed, the extra long wheelbase is because its wheels are tucked seriously to the far reaches of the car’s body. That explains why although the Freed has a longer wheelbase than the Grand Livina, the Grand Livina’s overall length still ends up being longer than the Freed’s – because of the overhangs.

I am a large guy and I can definitely fit into the second and third row but I wouldn’t exactly call it comfortable. In the third row, my knees were touching the rear of the second row – good thing the rear of the seats are soft-ish. The seating position feels a little high in all three rows which is good if you like to have a commanding position of the road and even your passengers are able to enjoy this.

Honda calls it a 4 seater plus ideas. The third row doesn’t fold flat onto the floor. Instead, you hang it from the sides of the vehicle like the old Pajero third row. At least the resulting luggage area has a flat floor. I haven’t tried personally but Honda’s press images have photos of two bicycles being able to be fit in there.

The low-ish floor because there’s no folded down third row taking up space and the tall roof likely makes the rear luggage area of the Freed one of the most flexible in terms of the dimensions of stuff you can fit in. The opening to access the cabin from the rear of the car is also suitably large – that’s why as some of you have commented there is not much of a rear bumper on the Freed. However because the entire interior is one big ‘room’, there’s no option for a luggage cover if you decide to use the third row as a permanent storage area.

However luggage space is quite limited when the rear seats are being used. You’re left with a triangle shaped storage area if your third row is reclined to a comfortable position. So 4 seater + 2 seater + luggage = not a good idea, unless you mount a storage box on top of the Freed.

But what about getting into the vehicle? The Freed has automatic sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle and they can be opened from the remote control. We tested the door for safety functions and etc and yes, they stop opening when they detect an obstruction. The little opening that’s required for the doors to slide rearward into is neatly integrated into the feature line that rises from the front to the rear of the Freed so it’s not unsightly. Opening and closing the doors only take about 5 seconds so you do not have to wait very long.

However because the Freed in itself isn’t a very long car compared to larger MPVs which typically employ these sliding doors, the doors and door opening isn’t that wide. And it’s a serious struggle to access the third row by sliding and reclining the second row forward. The walkthrough cabin created by the four captain chairs in the first and second row isn’t just a feature – it’s a necessity in order for you to get into the third row comfortably. It’s the same when exiting the vehicle.

How’s the passenger comfort? We drove the Freed around a short test track for a few laps, both as drivers and passengers. The Freed’s suspension is on the softer side – expected as it is an MPV after all. The steering is also pretty light and very easy to control and meneuver, but perhaps a little too light at higher speeds. It performs well under normal driving but under spirited driving there is alot of understeer and tyre squealing – perhaps better tyres will improve that. However you don’t buy an MPV to drive it like a maniac so I don’t think that’s really a minus point. We also found it easy to recover from any silly antics.

First and second row comfort is decent and I couldn’t find fault with the seats for the short drive that we had. However the third row ride comfort was quite bouncy, which was disappointing considering the magic that Honda pulled off with the Honda Odyssey. In the third row of the Odyssey you could be in the third row with the driver really gunning the B roads, causing the Odyssey to bank left and right as rapid successions of corner after corner got dealt with, and your tummy would not complain. In the Freed, the third row is located right above the rear torsion bar suspension thanks to the long wheelbase and short overhangs. The bounciness isn’t harsh but it can get quite rapid in frequency. There are only front air conditioning vents in the Freed but during our short test you could still feel some air flow in the third row.

The engine and transmission are both smooth and responsive to both throttle input and downshifting but as expected the combo has to work hard under the vehicle and passenger’s weight if you are not in the mood for a cruise, and things can start getting a little loud in the cabin at high revs but there’s no vibration. The brakes are pretty good though – we had a brake test area as part of the test track and they were strong and responsive even under a four person load.

And then you have the interior. The design of the double deck dash is quite appealing, and the multi-info display has a real time fuel consumption indicator which we now find a necessary feature in all modern cars. We get the better looking digital air conditioning controls compared to the triple knob manual controls we saw in our Indonesian test drive cars. There are loads of little cubby holes and storage areas here and there, which is something I really like.

However the moment the dashboard ends, you get door panels which are basically just plastic on all doors. Feels hard to accept all of this when you see the word “premium” thrown at you in all the Freed literature. What the Freed has ended up being is is a high spec compact MPV that also comes with a high price. Except for the tax-free zones like Langkawi of course. And it’s still not as high spec as we’d hope it to be – where’s the VSA stability control that doesn’t seem to be an available feature globally on any of the cars (Jazz, City) that spawn from this small car platform?
I wish Honda had took a more conventional approach to making a compact B-segment MPV instead of the “mini Alphard” that the Freed ended up being. The Freed is a very different formula from its competitors but I’m not sure if its a better formula as ultimately its still a small vehicle. Honda used to make a station wagon version of the last generation City/Jazz called the Honda Airwave. Imagine if what they made was a more ‘conventional’ lower riding Honda Airwave with 2-3-2 third row seating (as opposed to the Freed’s 2-2-3), regular doors and a more affordable price tag?

              "Perfect economical sports car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing has gone wrong. The only niggles (common to the model) are that the windows rattle a bit when left half down and going over large bumps, however it is an easy fix (take off door trim and tighten every screw in sight).

              General comments?

This car was perfect. It was comfortable (for a sports car), reliable, and had the performance to go. The exterior has not aged one bit!
Was extremely easy to live with. It handled extremely well, and performed and sounded beautiful above 5000rpm.
Interior fit and finish was extremely good, and had enough space to sit people in the back comfortably (compared to other sports cars).
If you want a good sports car that won't break down or the bank, get a DC2 Integra!

Teacher's Stolen Honda Accord Returned Souped Up with VTEC Engine! [with Video]

Here's a video relating the story of a New York teacher who had her 1996 Honda Accord stolen 3 years ago. Obviously, she never expected to get the car back.

It turns out that when a car IS stolen (even in Brooklyn), the man is on the case. A little while back, the Accord was found in a chop shop in Queens with the VIN filed off. Luckily, the police still l managed to track the car back to its original owner.

When the woman got it back, the Honda had been updated with a VTEC power train and its transmission was converted over to a stick shift!

And whoever from the AP (and Huffington, for printing it) is thinking that the car got a new V8 engine? Half a second of research prevents looking like you don't know jack.

Natural-Gas Honda Civic To Oklahoma As U.S. Lags in NGVs

                  http://www.greencarreports.com/blog/...s-lags-in-ngvs

                  April 26th, 2010

The U.S. buys more hybrids than any place else in the world except Japan. We have a handful of clean diesels, with sales slowly increasing. But the "other alt-fuel" for automobiles--natural gas--is barely a blip on the U.S. market. Nonetheless, Honda is plugging away (ahem) with its 2010 Honda Civic GX, the only natural-gas vehicle (NGV) now offered to U.S. car buyers. It announced today that Oklahoma would become the fourth regional market to offer the GX to retail purchasers. Of 13 Honda dealers in the state, three are already selling the Civic GX to fleet buyers. Not all 13 will necessarily carry the natural-gas model; the car is an "option" that dealers can take up or not. Refueling infrastructure exists As Honda points out, the state offers a "generous state tax incentive" for purchase of a new Civic GX, on top of an existing $4,000 federal tax credit. And it described Oklahoma's GX fleet sales as "solid" for several years. Moreover, Oklahoma's production of natural gas is second highest in the nation, so it has a strong existing network of stations selling CNG, with "robust" plans to expand it further in coming years. "Honda seeks market opportunities for the Civic GX where strong natural gas refueling infrastructure exists," said Elmer Hardy, senior manager of alternative-fuel vehicle sales, "and we see its promise as a clean, sustainable, domestically-sourced alternative fuel." CA, NY, then UT, now OK Last summer, Honda had announced that Utah would be the third market--after adding California in 2006, and then New York--for the Civic GX. Honda said then that Utah led the nation in per-capita natural gas refueling infrastructure. The 2010 Honda Civic GX is built in the same Indiana factory as gasoline-engined four-door Civics; its base price is $25,340. Presently, it's available to retail consumers at 43 California dealers, 19 in New York, and eight in Utah. It's available to fleet buyers in 33 states. The Honda Civic GX has been deemed "America's Greenest Car" by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) every year since 2004. It is the cleanest vehicle with an internal combustion engine ever tested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. More NGVs elsewhere Still, the U.S. lags substantially behind many other nations in the availability of new natural gas models. A new Volkswagen subcompact model, for instance, offers drivers in Germany a full 800 miles of range between its gasoline and natural-gas tanks. That model is the Polo BiFuel, whose 1.4-liter engine runs on either gasoline or natural gas (in this case, not compressed natural gas, or CNG, but liquified petroleum gas, or LPG). It has to be started up on gasoline, but can then be switched to LPG. More than 5,700 fuel stations in Germany sell LPG, one reason that Ford now offers a flex-fuel Mondeo in Europe that can switch over to natural gas at the driver's command. Chevrolet is developing natural-gas versions of its Spark and Beat mini-cars as well. Brazil, even Iran In Brazil, Fiat has sold the Siena Tetrafuel for four years. That car can run on gasoline, ethanol, or any combination of the two, and it can be switched over to natural gas that is kept in separate tanks in the trunk. Last year, Iran Khodro--that country's largest automaker--released a version of its Samand sedan, the turbocharged, 150-horsepower Soren ELX, that it calls the "world's most powerful CNG car." Why Iran, where gasoline is 15 cents a gallon? Well, natural gas is cheap there too. Cheap enough, in fact, that Iran Khodro says it sold half a million CNG-powered cars within two years, roughly a quarter of its total production. Meanwhile, in the U.S., we make do with a single Civic. But hey, at least Sooners can buy one now. [Honda, Polo Driver, Spy n Sketch via Indian Autos Blog]

In fact, given that Acura is Honda’s only auto branding exercise thus far and it’s hardly the strongest brand in the world, the best branding advice for Honda seems to be stick with the Honda thing. Which might explain why this Everus concept from the Motor Company’s forthcoming China-only brand, Li Nian, is such an Acura-like disappointment [via Paul Tan].

Honda of Canada to increase production at Alliston, Ont., plant

Honda of Canada will increase production at its Alliston, Ont., plant adding 400 new positions by early 2011

Honda of Canada Mfg. said Tuesday it would add a second production shift at its Alliston, Ont., plant early next year, adding more than 400 new jobs there.
The news is just the latest in a string of good news for the beleaguered auto sector in Canada, which shed more than 7,000 last year as sales plummeted during the recession.
Last week, General Motors of Canada said it too would be adding a third shift at its Oshawa, Ont., plant in October after sales of its Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain spiked in the first quarter.
GM said the move would allow it to recall about 600 workers to the plant, as well as add 70 new jobs at its Ingersoll, Ont., facility.
Honda said Tuesday it would add the second shift to its site in Alliston in early 2011, where it produces the Honda Civic, Acura MDX sport utility vehicle, and the Acura ZDX crossover.
"We are pleased to be making this announcement as the Canadian economy continues to show signs of recovery," said Manabu Nishimae, president and CEO of Honda Canada Inc.
Honda said the second shift would allow it to increase its output at the plant from 400 units per day to 600 units.

Honda Launches Li Nian Brand, Everus Concept Car in China

Honda's launching a new premium sub-brand for the Chinese market, but don't look for an Acura logo (or beak) to adorn any of the new models. Instead, they'll be badged as Li Nian vehicles, and may resemble the new Everus show car pictured here.

The Everus certainly bears a visual likeness to recent Acura designs, especially with the strong lines, angled lower air intakes, and slender rear taillights that wrap into the decklid. The car may not sport the “power plenum” beak, but its front fascia is no less controversial -- two slender headlamp assemblies lie on both sides of an angular grille.

Few details are known about the Everus, although Honda does say it will be the first member of the new Li Nian family. Reports suggest the Civic-sized offering may ride on a stretched City sedan, which itself is built off a stretched Fit platform.

Interestingly, the Everus is designed to compete against the Civic. The Guangqui Honda joint venture doesn’t manufacture that model, but Honda’s other Chinese venture -- Dongfeng Honda -- builds and sells the compact in the country. Expect Dongfeng to counter later this year with its own sub-brand for the Chinese market.

Look for a production version of the Everus to launch at this year’s Guangzhou auto show, scheduled for December.

Honda China Dealers Want SUVs, Lose Money on Hybrids (Update1)

                      By Makiko Kitamura

April 27 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. dealers in Beijing say they don’t have enough sport-utility vehicles in stock to meet demand, while hybrid models are selling at loss-making discounts.
Customers at Beijing Fanlv Business and Trading Co., a Honda dealership in the city’s Chaoyang district, wait as long as two months for a CR-V SUV, said Wen Hai, the outlet’s general manager. The long wait enables him to charge a premium for the model, while customers won’t buy the Civic hybrid unless he lowers its 270,000 yuan ($39,550) sticker price by 70,000 yuan, he said.
“We actually sell them at a loss,” Wen said of the gasoline-electric Civics. “They are just too expensive.”

Carmakers are boosting sales of larger models in China even though they don’t qualify for government tax breaks, which target smaller cars and are set to expire at the end of the year. Executives at Toyota and Honda, attending the Beijing Auto Show that opened April 23, said they aren’t concerned that their sales growth will taper off if the tax cut is phased out.
“The small-car segment is growing, but we also have a lot of backorders for our CR-V,” Honda’s Chief Executive Officer Takanobu Ito said in an interview last week at the show. “The Accord is also selling very well. So sales across our lineup will grow.”

The hybrid Civic is the Tokyo-based company’s worst-selling Honda-brand model in China, the world’s biggest car market. The Chinese government is considering incentives for hybrids and electric vehicles that may be introduced as early as July.

                      RAV4s Needed

At the Beijing Zhongye Toyota dealership, only two RAV4 SUVs are in stock and more are needed, general manager Chen Guangjun said in an interview. Customers who bought the vehicles haven’t complained about Toyota’s February recall of the model in China to fix faulty gas pedals, he said.
“When the small-car tax break came out, sales of small cars grew, but so did that of the other segments,” Masahiro Kato, president of Toyota’s local unit, said on April 23. “The Chinese market overall still has a lot of room to grow.”
Toyota, the world’s largest carmaker, will exceed an 800,000-vehicle sales target in China this year, the Toyota City, Japan-based company said last week. The automaker sold 271 units of its 259,800-yuan Prius, the world’s top-selling hybrid vehicle, last year in China.

                      Overtime Production

Toyota rose 0.1 percent to close at 3,695 yen today in Tokyo trading, while Honda gained 0.8 percent.
Honda’s factory in Wuhan, central China, is running on overtime to produce 1,013 vehicles a day due to high demand for the CR-V, said Isamu Matsuoka, deputy president of the carmaker’s joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group Co.

Honda sold 193 hybrid Civics in China last year. The model is imported from Japan, adding a 25 percent tariff to the price tag.

The models are selling for about 200,000 yuan, a 70,000 yuan discount to the sticker price, said Wen, the Honda dealer in Beijing. Of the 1,632 cars sold at the dealership last year, 10 were Civic hybrids. By contrast, a conventional, gasoline- powered Civic sells for 130,000 yuan, he said.
Toyota sold 271 units of its Prius, priced from 259,800 yuan, in China last year. The automaker said April 12 it plans to sell 500 Camry sedan hybrids in China a month. The hybrid Camry, Toyota’s fifth gasoline-electric car offered in China, is priced from 319,800 yuan, the company said.
                      Buffett-Backed BYD

BYD Co., a Shenzhen-based carmaker 10 percent owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., delivered 48 of its F3DM plug-in hybrids to corporate or government customers last year. By comparison, BYD sold 290,963 of its gasoline-powered F3, which was China’s best-selling model.
China’s government cut the consumption tax on cars with engines no larger than 1.6 liters to 5 percent from 10 percent in January 2009 and raised it to 7.5 percent this year. The government is likely to end the tax break in 2011 as it is no longer needed to raise vehicle sales, Xu Changming, a research director at China’s State Information Center, said in an interview last week.
The government was previously scheduled to announce subsidies for alternative energy-powered vehicles in January. It is still working on details after seeking advice from automakers, Xu Ping, chairman of Dongfeng Motor Group Co., said on April 14.

The complexity of determining the standards and amount of subsidies caused the delay and the government is now expected to make an announcement in July, China Economic Times reported on April 8. The government is still debating the details of the measures, Xu of the State Information Center said last week.

Leader laments Honda's lack of progress

Company didn’t grow after Toyota’s trouble, says president, CEO

                      THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Takanobu Ito wants better product performance.

Honda's top executive thinks his company has grown complacent, coasting on the success of the Accord, Civic and CR-V and not doing enough to exploit demand for gas-electric hybrids.
Takanobu Ito made the comments to Automotive News, a trade magazine, in an article published yesterday.
"The biggest problem is, we're not selling the value of our products. We have to improve the performance of our products as well," he said.
He lamented that Honda's U.S. market share has fallen, from 10.5percent in the first quarter last year to 10.1 percent this year, despite the opportunities presented by Toyota's safety recalls.
Honda, which has a major manufacturing presence in Ohio, has undergone a management overhaul in the past year, with Ito ascending to the top job in Tokyo and Hidenobu Iwata coming from Japan to become the top executive for U.S. manufacturing, based in Marysville.
Ito's message might be aimed at Honda's own employees, said Michelle Krebs, a senior auto analyst for Edmunds.com, a website for car buyers.
"There are some problems at Honda; whether it's complacency or not, I'm not sure," she said. "It seems to be confusion and indirection."
After Toyota's recall crisis erupted in January, analysts predicted that Honda would be one of the main beneficiaries, and some of the early results indicated that Honda was helped.
Over several months, though, Honda has not maintained its edge, while Toyota has used heavy discounts to win back market share.
Ito also is disappointed in sales of the Insight, a gas-electric hybrid that hasn't come close to challenging Toyota's Prius. He hopes that the next-generation Insight will beat the Prius in fuel economy and begin to make up the difference in sales.
"They should have owned that spot," said Krebs, about hybrid sales. "But something got lost along the way."
The competition is expected to get more intense , as several companies are preparing to release cars that will compete directly with the Civic, including the new Chevrolet Cruze and a redesigned Ford Focus.

Top 2010 green cars listed by Kelley Blue Book

As customary in April, Kelley Blue Book has released the Top Green Cars of 2010. In order to make the Top Green Cars list, the 10 cars chosen have to meet specific criteria in order to be considered.
The annual list specifies each of the vehicles offer good fuel economy, CO2 emissions which are better than others in the same vehicle class, and at the same time be able to put forward safety and comfort. In essence the car has to be 'green' and still be an overall satisfying car to drive.

The cars are listed in order of "in order of combined EPA-estimated fuel economy" (kbb.com). Since the criteria specifies that the cars must offer both good mileage to the gallon and decreased CO2 emissions, both of these factors are taken into consideration when making the rank.
And now for the drum roll please….the top 10 Green Cars of 2010 as listed by Kelley Blue Book.

                      1. 2010 Toyota Prius

Topping this year's green list is the Toyota Prius. At a whopping 50 mpg on average, this car is described as "the biggest, most powerful iteration yet, it's also the most fuel efficient" (kbb.com). This model has lots of high tech options that brings futuristic cars into reality with voice activated navigation and a solar-powered ventilation system. Seems like the earlier problems with this vehicle have not affected its green status.

                      2. 2010 Honda Insight (Hybrid)

Honda has two nods in 2010 (see #7). This vehicle is highly integrated with technology features that allow for strong convenience to get the best of both worlds. At 41 mpg on average, it is hard to deny this car is pretty efficient when compared to many other cars.

                      3. 2010 Ford Fusion (Hybrid)

The Fusion gets 39 mpg on average (41 city, 36 highway) and according to Kelley gets points not only for efficiency, but because it manages to include all of the features in conventional cars of its type.

                      4. 2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI

Volkswagen Golf TDI is new to Kelley's green list this year according to Fox (myfoxdc.com). At an average of 34 mpg (30 city, 42 highway), seems to be a good choice.

                      5. 2010 MINI Cooper

For a small car, this vehicle seems to get a lot of attention. More and more of these seem to appear on the road all the time. It is no wonder, the Cooper gets an average of 32 mpg (37 on the highway) and is pretty efficient.

                      6. 2010 Ford Escape (Hybrid)

Looks like Ford gets two cars on the list this year. The Escape gets 32 mpg (34 city, 31 highway) and Kelley calls it "the most fuel-efficient SUV on the road today".

                      7. 2010 Honda Fit

This Honda gets an average of 31 mpg (28 city, 35 highway) and is a smaller sized vehicle that does well on efficiency, speed and even has cargo space.

                      8. 2010 BMW 335d

Averaging 27 mpg (36 on the highway), the BMW was chosen because this car features a six-cylinder diesel engine which provides both power and efficiency.

                      9. 2010 Toyota Highlander (Hybrid)

The Highlander averages 26 mpg. According to Kelley Blue Book this vehicle "is a green family favorite not just for its seven seats and superior fuel economy, but also for its standard all-wheel drive and demonstrated reliability" (kbb.com).

                      10. 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe (Hybrid)

The Tahoe averages 22 mpg. This larger SUV style vehicle is estimated to use about six gallons less than other vehicles in the same class.
The Green List is released by Kelley Blue Book annually. Click here to compare this year's list to Kelley's 2009 Green List.

                      • Honda Boss: Next Insight Will Beat Prius MPG

                        Published April 27, 2010

The 2010 Honda Insight has been a disappointment for Honda. The company is trying to learn from its mistakes by making the next generation Insight the industry's most efficient hybrid.

Takanobu Ito, Honda’s president, said last week that the company has grown “complacent,” and specifically pointed to its poor performance with hybrids as a key sign of the problem. To correct the situation, Ito is pushing his engineers to have the next-generation Honda Insight beat the Toyota Prius’s fuel economy numbers—and to deliver it as soon as possible.
"I'm not satisfied," Ito told Automotive News. In the first quarter of 2010, Honda’s share of the US market fell to 10.1 percent—from 10.5 percent a year earlier.
In concept, the Honda Insight was intended to compete as a more affordable alternative to Toyota Prius. But the price of the Insight, typically in the low $20,000s, is not the much cheaper than a Prius—and the fuel economy is considerably lower. The Prius gets 51 mpg in the city and 48 on the highway, compared with the Insight's 40/43. The copycat shape of the Insight added to the negative comparison with the Toyota Prius, which has outsold the Insight by about 5 to 1.
In addition to trying to beat the mileage of the Prius, Ito wants to roll out a new two-motor hybrid technical design—one motor employed to increase engine power and another to solely charge the battery. The new system is also likely to switch to lithium ion batteries from the nickel metal hydride technology currently in use. Honda will apply its new hybrid approach to a minivan and in Acura models. A rework of Honda's hybrid system could potentially create a technology pathway to plug-in hybrids.

                        More Lessons to be Learned

                        Honda CR-Z

Honda’s new and improved hybrids are not expected until about 2012. Meanwhile, the company will introduce the Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe this summer. Unfortunately, the small hybrid could be another case of neither-here-nor-there, at least according to Graham at Fifth Gear, the British television show. The CR-Z looks sporty enough, but at 122 horsepower, it's “not blessed with red-blooded speed,” said Graham. At the same time, the fuel economy averaging at 37 mpg is only “reasonable” and “doesn’t sound that good next to a Prius.”

YouTube - Fifth Gear Web TV - Honda CR-Z Road Test

                        [/URL]

Yet, Honda engineers and designers should take heed to Fifth Gear’s positive feedback on features that could be applied to future hybrids. Graham calls the interior “mad and brilliant,” and praises the availability of a six-speed manual gearbox—a first for hybrids. Given the CR-Z’s moderate level of high-speed handling and cool interactive dashboard features, the reviewer said, “You can’t accuse it of being dull.” Pricing in the US for the CR-Z has not yet been announced.

Oklahoma to Get Natural Gas-Powered Honda Civic

When I first tested the Honda Civic GX and its nearly seamless driving experience, I wondered why it was sold only in California and New York; Utah was added later. Honda sold pretty much each one it made, too.

The reasoning was all about infrastructure, and that’s why Oklahoma has just been added to the company’s retail network for the Civic GX.

Because of the vehicle’s past sales success, we recommend getting on a wait list now at one of the 13 Honda dealers in Oklahoma if you’re interested in buying a Civic GX for personal use. It previously was sold to commercial fleets in Oklahoma. You fill it up at a natural gas station, which are typically in industrial areas, or at a home filling station. Honda says Oklahoma is the second leading state in natural gas production and offers incentives for Civic GX buyers. The GX gets the equivalent of 24/36 mpg city/highway and starts at $25,340.

to help supply energy to the new hydrogen powered cars, honda has developed a new charging station
that can provide a full hydrogen charge in only eight hours using solar energy. the new charging units
are much smaller than previous versions and are designed to be integrated into user’s garages. each unit
can produce 0.5kg of hydrogen in 8 hours, enough to fill a standard car for daily commuting. the unit
also doesn’t require storing hydrogen on site, lowering the charging’s carbon dioxide emissions.
by connecting the unit to smart grid energy system, users can even sell energy back. for future hydrogen
car users the system will help support dispersed quick fill charging stations.

                            Honda boss: We've been 'complacent'

From Hans Greimel of Automotive news:

                            http://www.autonews.com

BEIJING -- Honda Motor Co., which has not capitalized on Toyota's recall woes and lost U.S. market share, has grown "complacent" and needs to refocus on better products and stronger marketing, President Takanobu Ito said last week.

"I'm not satisfied," Ito said of American Honda Motor Co.'s slide to a 10.1 percent share of the U.S. market in the first quarter, from 10.5 percent a year earlier. American Honda's 11 percent sales increase lagged the overall market's 16 percent advance in the period.

Ito has challenged his engineers to speed up the launch of the next-generation Honda Insight hybrid, which has been a major sales disappointment. And he is rolling out a new hybrid strategy for larger vehicles.

Marketing is also on his mind. Speaking on the sidelines of the Beijing auto show, Ito said Honda dropped the ball in selling its cars' strong points. The company also needs to do a better job of tapping rapidly changing customer preferences and must strive for lower prices, particularly to compete with hot-selling Hyundai.

"Maybe we weren't doing well in that arena," Ito said. "It's possible we grew complacent about the good performance of the Accord, Civic and CR-V."

He added: "The biggest problem is we're not selling the value of our products. We have to improve the performance of our products as well."

Ito cited the Insight as a weak link. The hybrid was pitched as a moderately priced, fuel-efficient alternative to the Toyota Prius when it was launched in March 2009. But Toyota's car nearly matches the Insight in price and exceeds it in fuel economy. This year the Prius is outselling the Insight about 5 to 1.

The Honda boss wants the next-generation Insight to best its Toyota rival in terms of fuel economy. The Prius gets 51 mpg in the city and 48 on the highway, compared with the Insight's 40/43.

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.'s share fell to 15.1 percent in the first quarter, from 16.3 percent in the same period last year. While Honda/Acura lost ground, Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Nissan North America managed to take a slice of Toyota's lost share.

Ito said his company's aim is to sell more and better cars, not "topple competitors." And he said Honda also won't resort to predatory incentives like Ford or GM.

"When Toyota's troubles started, the major manufacturers -- other than Honda -- came up with aggressive programs to take advantage of the vacuum left by the recalls," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insights for the TrueCar consulting firm in Santa Monica, Calif.

"Honda's initial reaction time was somewhat slower, which probably limited its market share gains in the last several weeks."

A key element of Ito's growth strategy is a new two-motor hybrid system for vehicles larger than the Civic. Honda's current hybrid system uses one electric motor to assist the gasoline engine and recharge the battery during braking.

The new system will have a bigger electric motor with the sole task of boosting engine power. Another motor will charge the battery, Ito said. It will go into minivans and the Acura lineup.

Ito announced at the Beijing show that Acura will launch its first hybrid model in China within three years, but he didn't give a time for a U.S. debut.

Honda's future hybrids could get a leg up through the introduction of lithium ion batteries, which are lighter and more powerful than the current generation of nickel-metal hydride packs.

Honda has a joint venture with Japan's GS Yuasa Corp., called Blue Energy Co., which plans to open its first lithium ion battery factory in Japan this fall. That plant plans annual capacity of 20,000 to 30,000 batteries for hybrid vehicles by 2012.

"Lithium ion batteries will be used in the not-so-distant future," Ito said, adding that the batteries will be introduced in new models as nickel-metal hydride batteries are phased out.

Honda Says ‘Too Small’ Insight Hybrid May Miss Sales Target but will make Fit/Jazz hybrid and CR-Z sport hybrid in showroom this year.
Honda gets a lot of slack for their second-generation Honda Insight. It’s not as fuel-efficient as its first generation model or its competitor, the Toyota Prius. Nonetheless, at $23,000, it is still the most economical hybrid on the market today.

Selling 200,000 Insights worldwide in the first year “looks tough,” Executive Vice President Koichi Kondo said in an interview on Jan. 19 in Tokyo, where Honda is based. “I think we compromised too much on size in pursuing fuel efficiency” for the U.S. market, he said.
The Insight is “too small” and there isn’t enough room in the back seat for U.S. customers, Kondo said. The Prius outsold the Insight about seven-to-one in the U.S. in the last quarter of 2009 after Toyota introduced a revamped version of the world’s bestselling hybrid car in June.
Honda had sold 130,445 Insights worldwide as of Dec. 31 since introducing the car in Japan in February and in the U.S. in March. In the U.S., the company has sold 20,572 Insights. It expected to sell 90,000 there in the first year.
The hybrid Fit is due to go on sale later this year. A hybrid Honda CR-Z sports-car will enter the market next month.

HONDA plans to produce 3.59 million units in the world next financial year to start in April, up 6 percent from this financial year’s outlook on rising sales, Asahi newspaper reported on Saturday.
The world’s 7th-biggest automaker expects to see sales grow in emerging nations such as China, as well as a recovery in sales in the United States, Asahi said without citing a source.
The company plans to produce 1.29 million units in North America next financial year, up 110,000 units from the current financial year, and 980,000 units in Japan, up 70,000 units, Asahi reported.

                              • Toyota Prius tops best-mileage list

Q: I drive for my job, and I am determined to lease the car with the absolute best fuel mileage I can get. What is at the top of the list? — Linda, Orlando

A: Well, the answer is different right this minute from what it may be later this year. That's when we should see the Nissan Leaf all-electric car, and the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid. Of the vehicles available right now, the U.S. Department of Energy says the Toyota Prius hybrid, rated at 51 mpg city, 48 mpg highway, gets the best mileage.
In the non-hybrid ranks, it's the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta diesels, and the Audi A2 diesel, all tied at 30 mpg city, 42 mpg highway.
The most efficient vehicle ever with an EPA rating? The 2000 Honda Insight hybrid, at 49 mpg city, 61 mpg highway.

Fiat has come a long way

Q: I find it amazing that Fiat is intending to return to the American market, given the quality (or lack of it) when they were here last. What suggests they will be better this time around?Bert, Leesburg
A: Bert, not everybody is as old as us, and they don't remember those rust buckets from the 1960s and '70s. Fiat has come a long way since, and its cars typically rank well in European surveys. That said, do they understand the U.S. market better now than then? We'll know early next year when the 500 arrives – it will be on an all-new platform, and will be built in Mexico.

Honda Tries To Capitalize On Oklahoma's Natural Gas Industry

TULSA, OK -- Honda says it has expanded the retail market for its 2010 Honda Civic GX, a natural-gas powered vehicle or NGV, to include Oklahoma.

According to a news release, Oklahoma has become the fourth regional market to offer the GX to retail purchasers.
Of the 13 Honda dealers in the state, one dealer in Tulsa is already selling the Civic GX to retail customers.
Joe Marina Honda at 91st and Memorial sold 83 last year.
They've have had fleet sales of the Civic GX for several years now.
Mark Sprowuls, the sales manager for the GX model at Joe Marina, says the car is eligible for federal and state tax credits which cuts the base price of $26,000 by up to $7,467 depending upon eligibility.

ONG offers a number of refueling locations in and around the Tulsa area.
                                • 5848 E. 15th Street - Tulsa
                                • 75 E 66th St N. - Tulsa
                                • 7002 S. Union Ave. - Tulsa
                                • 2421 S. 1st Place - Broken Arrow
                                • 1449 SW Country Club Road - Claremore
                                • 410 South Hawthorn - Sapulpa
The price is roughly $1.50 a gallon for natural gas. But Sprowuls says owners can also purchase compressors that allow them to refuel at home for roughly $1 a gallon.
Oklahoma's production of natural gas is second highest in the nation and the state has a strong network of stations selling CNG.
Oklahoma joins California, New York and Utah to sell the Honda Civic GX to individual customers.

                                Honda Expedites Insight Hybrid Replacement

There has long been a hybrid battle between Honda and Toyota. Unfortunately for Honda fans, Toyota has remained ahead of the curve thanks to the best-selling Prius. Luckily, that may change soon as the next-generation Honda Insight has become a top priority.
While Honda offers several hybrid models to choose from, the 2010 Insight is currently the only standalone hybrid model in the lineup that doesn’t also offer a non-hybrid alternative. From its onset, the Insight has been aimed squarely at chipping away at the Prius’ global market dominance, but sales have been disappointing.
The Insight’s poor performance against the Prius has especially disappointed Honda President Takanobu Ito, who has since challenged Honda’s engineering teams to ramp up development on the Insight’s replacement. While the current Insight has officially undercut the Prius in terms of price, the next-generation will have to out perform the Prius in another key area – mileage.
“I’m not satisfied,” Ito said in regard to American Honda Motor Co.’s 10.1 percent share of the U.S. market in the first quarter.
With Toyota’s recent safety and quality issues, now seems the perfect time for Honda to launch its hybrid offensive. Not only is the new Insight being pushed to the forefront of R&D, but Honda is also working on its new hybrid technology that will likely bring hybrid efficiency to Honda’s larger models, such as the Odyssey minivan. or Pilot crossover.

Honda Sees Strong Year Ahead as Market Recovers

                                BY YOSHIO TAKAHASHI

TOKYO—Honda Motor Co. reported a $774.7 million fiscal fourth-quarter net profit and predicted a 27% jump in bottom-line results for the current fiscal year, as Japan's No. 2 auto maker counts on significant growth in North America and elsewhere.
The car maker's bullish forecast underlines the fact that it is making swift progress in moving back to a growth track following an industrywide slump after the financial crisis. Honda is targeting growth in the U.S., its largest market, at a time when its bigger rival, Toyota Motor Corp., is striving to regain sales momentum following its recent global recalls.

Honda credits $2.9B profit to frugality

Christine Tierney / The Detroit News

Honda Motor Co.'s annual profit nearly doubled to $2.9 billion after the Japanese automaker slashed expenses to more than offset a drop in sales.
Honda tightened its belt last year, postponing some projects, canceling others, and trimming research spending in a difficult global sales environment.
Revenue for the fiscal year ended on March 31 dropped 14 percent to $92 billion, Honda reported Wednesday.

For this fiscal year, which began April 1, Honda predicts higher motorcycle and vehicle sales, and a 27 percent rise in profit to $3.7 billion at current exchange rates.
Last year, as demand plunged in the U.S. and other major markets, Honda briefly sank into the red. In the three months to March 31, 2009, its fiscal fourth quarter, the company lost $1.9 billion.
In the first three months of 2010, Honda earned $776 million as sales recovered in key markets. U.S. sales of Honda vehicles, including its popular Accord and Civic cars, climbed 11 percent, as its archrival Toyota Motor Corp. struggled with recalls and quality issues.
As Toyota and other automakers stepped up their discounts, Honda also increased its incentives but continued to trail its major competitors.
"They were perhaps a little hesitant to take full advantage of Toyota's misery," said Jesse Toprak, an analyst at Santa Monica, Calif.-based pricing firm TrueCar.com.
Toprak estimated that Honda's discounts this month average $2,100 per vehicle, compared with an industry average of $2,800. But, he said, "we forecast that Honda is the only major player that will show a sales increase in April over March."
In Japan, Honda's sales have benefited from tax breaks for fuel-efficient cars, such as its Fit.
Although demand is recovering, Honda is maintaining many belt-tightening measures, including white-collar salary cuts. The automaker also canceled plans to produce a V8 engine for its largest vehicles.

                                Japan: Honda stages profit revival
                                April 29, 2010

Honda yesterday posted a 16572 billion (R5.77bn) profit for the quarter to March in a reversal from red ink a year earlier.

This was mainly due to booming demand in China and India combined with a fledgling US recovery boosting car sales.

Honda reported that quarterly sales surged 28 percent from a year earlier to 1652.28 trillion.

Honda sold 874 000 vehicles in its fiscal fourth quarter, up 28.5 percent from the year before. - Sapa-AP

BMW has ousted Toyota as the world’s most valuable car brand, finds Millward Brown’s BrandZ Top 100 survey. Toyota’s recent rash of safety recalls – which have involved more than 8.5 million vehicles worldwide — helped BMW sneak past for the number one spot.

Toyota’s brand value slipped 27 percent in the survey, but still registered a strong $21.77 billion. “It is likely that Toyota’s brand has suffered further in recent months, but it is a strong brand and is trying hard to overcome the damage through a major communications campaign,” Peter Walshe, Millward Brown global brand director, told Automotive News. “All of our evidence shows that strong brands are much more likely to recover from a crisis.”

BMW’s brand value actually slipped 9 percent, but managed to just beat out Toyota at $21.82 billion.

Honda nabbed the third spot with a value of $14.3 billion.

BMW-rival Mercedes-Benz occupied the number four position on the list with a brand value of $13.74 billion, but that figure is down 11 percent from the year prior. Porsche saw an even bigger drop off, falling 31 percent to $12.02 billion – good enough for the fifth overall spot.
Volkswagen saw the highest jump of any automaker in brand value, climbing 20 percent to $6.99 billion. Ford wasn’t far behind, posting a 19 percent increase to $7.04 billion.

Honda's profit soars due to Asia, cost cuts

                                Kyodo News
Honda Motor Co. said Wednesday both its group net and operating profit in fiscal 2009 soared more than 90 percent on the back of strong sales in Asia and its cost-cutting efforts.

For the business year through March, Honda reported a net profit of ¥268.40 billion, up 95.9 percent, and an operating profit of ¥363.78 billion, up 91.8 percent, on sales of ¥8.58 trillion, down 14.3 percent.
Honda topped its earlier forecasts thanks to brisk demand for the new Step WGN minivan in Japan and strong motorcycle sales in India, Indonesia and Thailand.
For the 12-month period, Honda sold 3.39 million vehicles worldwide, down 3.6 percent from the year before, with the decline partially offset by a boost in demand in China, India and Brazil.
Sales in Japan rose 16.2 percent to 646,000 units on the back of government tax breaks and subsidies to promote the purchase of fuel-efficient cars.
Looking ahead, the company said it expects to sell 3.62 million units globally in fiscal 2010.

Honda part of state tourism push

An effort of Ohio officials to lure tourists is moving into high gear and a major regional employer has decided to help drive the campaign.
Gov. Ted Strickland and other state officials on Wednesday officially kicked off high season for Ohio’s tourism trade, an industry that generates about $39 billion in annual sales and employs about 452,000 people. A key feature of the latest tourism push is a mobile tour making its way to events around Ohio and other Midwestern states through July.

The state’s ride of choice: An Element made in East Liberty by Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. The automaker, whose North American manufacturing headquarters are in Marysville, donated use of the vehicle, while Speedway is providing fuel and Elmer’s Products is kicking in crafts that will be on display at each tour stop.
The mobile tour arrives at Cincinnati’s Flying Pig Marathon Expo Friday and makes its only Columbus stop at the City’s arts festival on June 5. More details on the tour are available by clicking here.
Caroline Ramsey, assistant manager for government and community relations for Honda, told Columbus Business First the automaker is playing a part in the promotion as a way to promote the vehicle’s fuel-efficient and travel-friendly features.

“This also draws attention to the fact that we do have a big presence in the state,” Ramsey said. Honda has about 14,000 employees in Ohio, nearly 9,000 of which are in Central Ohio.
The six-state promotional tour on wheels is only one part of a larger effort Ohio’s Division of Tourism is making this summer to sell the state as a weekend destination low on cost and loaded with options. Twitter followers of @DiscoverOhio will receive daily offers next month on discounted travel packages, zoo tickets and other events, while Ohio travelers who upload vacation photos and videos at DiscoverOhio.com could have a chance to win travel packages valued at $500 or more.
The state also is running promotions at nine Ohio Barnes & Noble stores, including three in Columbus, and launching an advertising blitz covering a 300 mile radius of the border. Two local advertisers – Ron Foth Advertising and Fahlgren – have a hand in tourism marketing for the state.
The range of efforts under way in the next few months add up to a push to stimulate an industry that’s been hit like most other states amid the recession, said state Tourism Director Amir Eylon. Data on tourism activity aren’t set to be released for another few weeks, but Eylon said the numbers will reflect a slowdown in most sectors.
“We did see, however, that leisure travel held its own,” he said. “(The downturn) made Ohio more attractive.”
