  • Honda Showcases Zero Emission Expertise With 3R-C And EV-N Concepts at Geneva Motor Show

    EV-N
Geneva - Honda has unveiled two battery electric urban concept cars at Geneva, the stylish EV-N and the three-wheeled 3R-C, which envisions a single occupant vehicle for zero emission commuting. The radical concepts draw on Honda's expertise in zero and ultra low emission technologies to show two urban vehicles with no harmful tailpipe emissions.
Both, EV-N and 3R-C, build on Honda's vast working knowledge of battery electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. Honda began producing the battery electric vehicle EV Plus in 1996 with the vehicles being leased to selected customers in the US. Since 1999 Honda has been selling petrol electric hybrid cars and in 2008 introduced the world's first production fuel cell electric vehicle, the FCX Clarity.

    3R-C

All of these vehicles utilise electric motors for propulsion and batteries to store power and it is this real-world production experience that Honda is bringing to its latest concept models. Honda's FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle uses a Lithium ion battery to store the energy from regenerative braking and Honda is currently enhancing its expertise in this area. Last-year a deal was signed with GS Yuasa to build a joint venture battery plant to produce Lithium ion battery packs for future Honda vehicles.

    EV-N

The EV-N is a battery electric vehicle study, which evokes the spirit of the diminutive 1967 N360 city car. Honda designers have incorporated Honda's own solar panels in to the roof of the concept, to charge the car while it is parked. Two of Honda's U3-X, electric personal mobility devices are attached to the inside of each door. The two-door Concept is envisioned with a Lithium ion battery pack, and small electric motor for predominantly urban use.

The EV-N concept's four-seat interior makes use of the compact dimensions of the battery electric drivetrain, to maximise space and utility, without increasing the vehicles dimensions. The seats of the car have been produced in a mesh finish, which is both very light and easy to change, to make it easy to change the colour and style of the interior, quickly and easily. The interior has been designed in a deliberately minimal style, to reduce the weight of the vehicle, increasing range and performance.

    3R-C

This revolutionary three wheeled battery electric vehicle concept shows what a future minimal urban transport vehicle for one person might look like. The battery electric drivetrain, is mounted low in the three wheeled chassis, therefore keeping the centre of gravity low and thus improving stability.
The 3R-C has a clear canopy that covers the driver's seat while it is parked and not in use. When the three wheel vehicle is in motion, the canopy becomes an enveloping wind-shield that provides the pilot, who sits low in the chassis, with significant protection.
The high sides of the safety shell seat give greater safety to the occupant, reducing the threat from side impacts and improving weather protection. In front of the driver is a lockable boot area, which gives significant secure storage for luggage or other items. The 3R-C's designers created a flexible cover that surrounds the upper torso to reduce exposure to bad weather and improving comfort.

The Honda CR-Z sporty hybrid coupe

The European version of the Honda CR-Z makes its debut at the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show. The European version features a 2+2* cabin layout, bespoke LED accented headlights and is only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The CR-Z is a unique new car, combining the advantages of a clean, efficient petrol electric hybrid powertrain with a manual transmission and a stylish coupe body. This exciting new coupe will change current perceptions of hybrids, with its engaging chassis and responsive IMA hybrid system.
The overall power output of the engine and IMA system is 124 PS and a healthy 174 Nm of torque. The peak torque figure is identical to that of the 1.8-litre Civic and arrives at just 1500 rpm, a level where previously only turbocharged engines deliver their maximum. Even with torque levels directly comparable with a Civic, the CR-Z emits 35 g/km** less CO2 than its conventionally powered cousin. Other harmful exhaust emissions are also very low and the Nickel Metal Hydride battery pack can be recycled through Honda dealers, at the end of the vehicle's life.
For the first time, a fuel efficient, low emission parallel hybrid system is combined with an ultra precise 6-speed manual gearbox. The manual gearbox is a core part of the driver engagement Honda's engineers wanted to bring to the CR-Z model. The flexibility of Honda's unique IMA parallel hybrid system allows it to be used with a range of transmissions, not just CVT-based gearboxes.

        • Honda Accord and Honda CR-V Named Best in Class in the United States

With Honda CR-V sales plummeting (down over 25% last month) and Honda Accord sales down as well Honda must be wondering what they have to do to attract the buyers here in Australia especially when they can win awards in other parts of the world.

The Honda Accord and CR-V have been named in Kiplingers 2010 Best in Class awards in the U.S, with the Accord taking Best in Class in the US$25,000 $30,000 price range and the CR-V named Best in Class: Small Crossover.
The V6 Honda Accord won its price range category for the third year in a row, with editors nominating the vehicles impressive reliability, comfortable ride, standard safety equipment and powerful yet thrifty driving approach as key selling points.
One of the first models introduced to Australia, the Accord is the most highly decorated vehicle in Hondas history. It was the first Japanese car to win the coveted Wheels Car of the Year award during its first year in Australia and was more recently named 2008 Drive Car of the Year and Large Car of the Year.
Adding to its popularity as the top-selling compact crossover in the U.S, the Honda CR-V was awarded Best in Class for its clean design, fuel economy, and impressive driveability. Kiplingers editors also nominated the vehicles strong resale value as a contributing factor.

One of Honda Australias most popular cars, the CR-V is a versatile family car that offers superior safety, style and affordability. Comprehensively equipped with safety features, the CR-V features Hondas Advanced Compatibility Engineering body, Vehicle Stability Assist and front, side and curtain airbags as standard across the entire range.
The Best in Class awards recognise vehicles that are proven standouts in their respective categories. Vehicles are judged on performance, value, safety and road test results.

          • Honda CR-V facelift in Malaysia adds VSA stability control and side airbags

The Honda CR-V facelift is now here in Malaysia, with a new price tag of RM149,980, a premium of slightly over RM2k when you compared it to the outgoing pre-facelift model. However in return for the RM2k the equipment list has had some very important safety additions in my opinion. Heres whats new:
            • VSA stability control has been added to the vehicle.
            • There are now a total of 4 airbags, up from the previous 2. The additional 2 are the two Occupant Position Detection System side airbags.
            • New engine hood, fog lamps, upper and lower front bumper, front grille and 17 inch alloy wheel design.
            • Four reverse sensors instead of two previously.
            • A new in-car entertainment unit featuring USB input which is found neatly tucked in the upper glove box.
            • New fabric design for the seats.
            • New seat-mounted fold-down arm rest which is wider.
            • LCD screen in the middle of the meter cluster now has blue backlighting.
            • Sound insulators enlarged and new seals added in dashboard, hood, inner fender, fender enclosure, rear door lining, rear side lining, cargo lid and wing mirror garnish.
            • Revised suspension geometry front caster trail from 20mm to 15mm, rear double wishbone damper settings revised and rear compliance bush shape improved.

Five colours are available Alabaster Silver, Polish Metal, Crystal Black, Taffeta White and a new colour called Urban Titanium. Look after the jump for a hi-res gallery of the new CR-V facelift.

From New York to Texas, a Seinfeld Odyssey

                By DANIEL MCDERMON

Trisha Raring Otis Raring with his 2008 Honda Odyssey Touring edition.

When Otis Raring began searching for a new car, he had some specific needs. He and his wife, Trisha, have two young children and are expecting a third. A minivan seemed like a good choice, but Mrs. Raring wanted one that looked a bit sportier than average. They settled on a Honda Odyssey the Touring edition. Preferably in black, which she thought made the Odyssey look even less minivanlike.
Mr. Raring, 37, cast a wide net, using cars.com to search across the nation from his home in Austin, Tex. He spent a few weeks searching before he found what sounded like the perfect car, a 2008 Odyssey Touring model, in black, with just 3,600 miles. The car was being offered for sale by Apple Honda of Riverhead, N.Y., on Long Island, for much less than similar vehicles Mr. Raring had priced in Texas. So he called the dealer.
The second thing out of his mouth is, You know somebody famous owned this minivan, right? Mr. Raring said in an interview. The dealer said that the Odyssey had just been returned on a two-year lease by Jerry Seinfeld. And then three sentences later he says, We just took the spinners off. All these alarms were going off.
Mr. Raring was skeptical. When shopping online, he said, Youre kind of looking for a scam.
The dealers tale was also reminiscent of an episode of Mr. Seinfelds show, in which the character George Costanza buys a car (a 1983 Chrysler Le Baron Town & Country convertible), thinking it had been owned by the actor Jon Voight. Later, it is revealed that the car had been owned by a dentist named John Voight.
But with the Odyssey listed at $28,291, the deal sounded too good to resist. Plus, Mr. Raring said, he found a video clip of Mr. Seinfeld talking about being a minivan owner.
Mr. Raring contacted a mechanic on Long Island to inspect the car. The mechanic reported that the car was in excellent shape. Whats more, the mechanic reported that he heard the same story from the dealer about the cars provenance.
They said Jerry Seinfeld got it for his nanny to drive his kids around, Mr. Raring said. He put a deposit down.
He planned to ship the car to Texas but couldnt make a deal to do so for less than $1,000. Instead, he booked a flight to New York, figuring that he could drive it back for less than shipping would cost.

Otis Raring Cargo loads were picked up along the way.

Then he had another idea: why not use the spacious vehicle on the return trip to make a little money? On the Web site uship.com, he connected with two people who were willing to pay to transport a few items along his route.
Mr. Raring flew to New York on a Wednesday morning and retrieved the Odyssey from the dealership at about 7:30.
When he finally saw the car in person, there was just one sign of its former owner: the GPS unit had what appeared to be Mr. Seinfelds address in East Hampton programmed into it. (Other locations in the GPS included Shea Stadium and Central Park West.) Mr. Seinfeld did not respond to an e-mail message from The Times about the car.
He then drove to Englewood, N.J., to pick up the first of his cargo loads. He made it to Maryland late that night and slept a few hours before he picked up another batch of items. On Thursday, he made it all the way to Hattiesburg, Miss., before stopping for the night. The next day he dropped off one load of cargo in Houston and the final load in Austin, making it home around 6 p.m.
Using the GPS, Mr. Raring tallied his trip from Riverhead to Austin at 1,949 miles and about 29 hours.
Its funny that Jerry Seinfelds minivan ended up in Texas, he said. Its pretty much an unused car. Other than what was in the GPS, theres no sign that it was his.

Honda CRV Reviews: Long Term Evaluation

                http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...on.html?cat=27

Honda owners are loyal, as this Honda CRV Review will show. There's good reason for this, as expert engineering has teamed with modern technology to make a truly rewarding ownership experience. Our CRV is a 2007 model and was purchased new at a New York dealership. Over the last forty five thousand miles, we've come to love the vehicle enough to recommend it with this Honda CRV Review.

Our CRV is a four wheel drive model and it's honestly the best winter vehicle I've owned, which is saying quite a bit considering that I've had two Subarus in the past. Our neighbor has a front wheel drive model and it does pretty well in the snow unless it gets over six inches. My recommendation is to opt for the four wheel drive model at least for the fact that it will increase resale value down the road.

We opted the mid level EX level CRV, which had a base price of around twenty four thousand dollars, and used Edmunds.com to get the best deal. We offered five hundred dollars over invoice and paid twenty five thousand dollars "out the door", as they say. I'm happy to report that in researching this Honda CRV Review I discovered that our 2007 model has held it's value quite well.

Every detail about the vehicle is worth mentioning in this Honda CRV Review. Thoughtful details abound, from the second glove box which is perfect for small items such as an Easy Pass or GPS. The rubberized coating on the top of the dashboard initially struck me as strange, but then I realized it was just another of those famous Honda engineering tricks- this one to lessen glare when the sun hits the dashboard.

The CRV has a fine level of fit and finish and it bears mentioning that the convenience of one touch up and down windows and one touch open and close sunroof functions help you keep your attention where it should be: on the road. Which leads me to the gauges, which are thoughtfully laid out and easy to glance at quickly. Worth mentioning is that the dashboard lights up in red and blue at night and is easy on the eyes and quite attractive.

No Honda CRV Review would be complete without mentioning how it fulfills the S and U in SUV. Sport is certainly believable in that the engine does have more than adequate power. Although it is a smaller engine, it delivers power efficiently through the use of multiple camshafts, valves and precise computer tuning. The five speed automatic transmission does a good job of finding the proper gear quickly without being jarringly so. We have regularly achieved thirty four miles to the gallon on the highway with our 2007 Honda CRV.

The U in Utility is met in like fashion as the S for sport. For the purposes of this Honda CRV Review, utility will include the capacity to carry luggage but also will focus on how it accommodates humans. Groceries are a breeze with a unique, removable tray that separates the area behind the rear seats into two sections (perfect for putting fragile things away from heavier groceries). With the seats folded down, I've never had a project come up that our CRV couldn't handle. That is significant, as I am responsible for several rental properties.

I'm a broad shouldered man, and have never felt cramped in the CRV. Even on the occasions I've had to ride in the back seat haven't produced a grumble from me. Part of accommodating people is making them comfortable, and the seats have plenty of support without being too hard. The air conditioning and heating controls are easy to use and are incredibly effective. The stereo has provisions for an ipod input, and the redundant buttons on the steering wheel help you pay attention to the road. Without hesitation, this Honda CRV Review enthusiastically recommends this vehicle.

Acura Ads Attempt to Make Piston Blocks, Lug Nuts Sexy

                  http://www.brandweek.com/bw/content_...a7c4026f45c49e

The scene opens with a stark white room, reminiscent of an art gallery, arranged with engine components perched atop tall spindles: crank shafts, piston blocks, belt assemblies.

With all the motors running, the room is a deafening caterwaul. Most automobiles use only insulation to reduce noise, announces the narrator, but we take a different approach. We use microphones to detect unwanted engine sounds, then transmit opposition frequencies to eliminate them. Like magic, the room falls silentenough for the viewer to hear a warbling canary inside a bamboo cage. Active sound control, the narrator intones, available only on the Acura.

The :30 (called Engine Parts) is one of nine new TV spots that broke earlier this year by the Honda-owned nameplate. Bearing the tagline, The most innovative thinking youll find, youll find in an Acura, the campaign is an ambitious grab for sales at a time when luxury brands are wheezing under a lingering recession and competitors like BMW and Mercedes keep a firm lock on the performance car segment.

What were trying to do with this campaign, and in this economy, is to show consumers that they can still have a luxury vehicle, but when you make this choice, you can make a smart decision, said Susie Rossick, Acuras manager of national advertising. With this theme, you can see we do things differently.

Acuras chosen point of differentiation is engineering. While other top nameplates stick with messages of performance, fuel economy and posh interiors, a strict focus on literal nuts-and-bolts components such as Acuras side-to-side rear-wheel energy transfer and an Active Damper System for its motor oil represents a new tack. Without going out and screaming value, were trying to show consumers that this is a smarter choicean innovative approach to luxury, Rossick added.

Christopher Cedergren, senior partner with Los Angeles-based automotive consultancy Iceology, said Acuras approach is well advised. Acura is too closely associated with Honda; they dont have an identity in the marketplace. So the technology [theme in the commercials] makes a lot of sense, he said. They need to hang their hat on something they haveand engineering is all they have.

Considering thatthanks to Toyotas current illsAmericans are suddenly all-too conscious of the importance of automotive technology that works, Acuras timingif only by coincidencecould be good.

While Rossick is quick to distance Acura from both Toyota as a competitor and its current braking and acceleration issues (Were not looking at [Toyotas problems] as an advantage, she said), Cedergren thinks it might give Acura a boost. The mere fact that they claim they have great experience in technology hints at the fact that youre not going to have [Toyotas] problems, he said.

Not that Acura hasnt had its own troubles. Unit sales fell 26.8 percent in 2009 compared to the year before. For the first month of 2010, sales improved but was still off by 1.7 percent, according to company data. Acura cut its ad spend by 45 percent last year, dropping $139 million compared to $225 million in 2008, per Nielsen. Cedergren said that the new campaignrecession or no recessioncomes at the right time. The luxury market has been hit hard, but the issue with [Acura] is that they have to move the metal. They have to keep the cash flowing, he said.

Perhaps the new spots (created by rp&, a division of RPA) will do that. The technologies were describing in this campaign are quite beautiful, said Joan Egan, group account director for rp&. We aimed to make each spot feel as if the viewer was stepping into an art installation in a gallery space, with the technologies as the works of art.

Now, all the spots have to do is get people to step into an Acura showroom.

                  • We never stop looking for ways to maximize power and optimize fuel efficiency

Masahiro Takedagawa, president & CEO, Honda Siel Cars India

Even as the automotive industry across the world was hit by the recession, Honda India sailed through the turbulent times by maintaining lean operations and carefully studying the operational footprint for creating greater efficiencies, thanks to its president & CEO Masahiro Takedagawa. Takedagawa started his professional career with Honda in 1979 as a trainee. He took over as the president & CEO of Honda Siel Cars in 2005. Takedagawa will take over as the head of Canadian operations. Takedagawa has been instrumental in bringing latest global product technologies, like hybrid, to India. In an exclusive interaction with Dataquest, Takedagawa talks about his belief in providing the best technology to the Indian market. Excerpts

As one of the leading automotive manufacturers in India, how critical is technology for Honda India?

We at Honda believe in constant enhancement in technology, constantly providing the latest and best technology in the Indian marketright from the iDSI engines to i-VTEC engines, hybrid technology in the form of Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) and Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), etcto enable vehicles to perform at their best. At Honda, we never stop looking for ways to maximize power, sharpen handling, minimize weight and optimize fuel efficiency while reducing emissions. Even our theme at the Auto Expo this year, Inspired by Dynamism-Truly Honda by Nature, was the reaffirmation of our relentless dynamism to create cutting-edge technologies and our commitment to protect the environment for the future generation.

Can you elaborate more on how technology is being used at Honda India for increasing productivity?

HSCI increased its production capacity from 50,000 to 1,00,000 units per annum in 2008. Apart from doubling the capacity, several advanced manufacturing techniques and robots have been used in the plant to enhance quality and accuracy of operations. Our weld shop has twenty-seven robots and the paint shop has twelve robots to apply the finishing top-coat to the vehicles. This automation has increased the pace of the manufacturing process as well as the efficiency on the line. To strengthen safety on the shop floor, HSCI has installed sophisticated sensors for the safety of its associates. Countermeasures automatically get activated if there is a safety breach anywhere in the plant. All these steps have taken for new and enhanced facility has led to high productivity. The plant can produce up to 380 cars per day with a comprehensive tact time of 167 seconds for each car.

On the R&D front, how is the technology helping?

The Honda designers at various R&D centers across the world study human perceptions and feelings from various perspectives and apply new ideas in the evolution of car designs with that unique Honda quality. New car designs which are developed then undergo comprehensive development process before they evolve into finished Honda products. Every stage of car manufacturing from conception to development involves various technologies. At our India facility too we have started an R&D function in the Greater Noida plant, since June 2009. The focus is to facilitate indigenization of our products and localize production of key components.

How do you look at technology outsourcing in India in particular?

As mentioned earlier, we have started an R&D function for automobiles in India focussing on indigenization of our products and localize production of key components. We can surely benefit from localization by minimizing our risks from adverse currency fluctuation and keeping the cost of our products quite competitive.

Can you throw some light on some of the measures adopted by Honda India to counter the recession?

During the recession at Honda we maintained lean operations, carefully studied the operational footprint to determine how we can create greater efficiencies. We also tied up with several public sector banks for enhancing the finance options for customers to ease their purchase. We took full advantage of stimulus packages provided by the government to boost sales in the auto industry.
In addition we also refreshed our line up with the new Civic, a new variant for Honda City, in the month of September last year and refreshed our CR-V in November 2009.

Honda India has recently recalled around 8,500 Honda City 2007 editions. How do you think technology could have helped in addressing this issue?

We are calling back these 8,532 units of second generation Honda City, manufactured in 2007, for a preventive part replacement of Power Window Switch at our dealerships. However, I would like to add here that these recalls are proactive countermeasures taken by Honda to upgrade parts that have potential of a malfunction based on product complaints and their analysis anywhere in the world.
If it found that there is a potential of similar malfunction in cars sold in India, these product updates (PUD) are carried out in India. Such kind of technical product upgradations helps in ensuring good quality and increases customers faith in the brand.

Honda India has recently announced its plans to introduce premium small cars in the Indian market. How will technology assist in this right from the conception stage to rolling out the cars in the market?

Honda New Small Concept which was displayed at the Honda booth during Auto Expo 2010, was the design direction of Hondas new small car and matches the image of Hondas all-new small category car for the new era. India is a leading country for R&D work on the New Small Concept. Extensive customer surveys have been conducted to understand the needs of Indian customers in order to develop this car. The new model based on this concept will be a global car with features to suit the needs of Indian customers. With its commitment to provide technologically advanced vehicles, the Honda New Small Concept is a true Hondafuturistic design with maximum cabin space. The Efficient Energetic Exterior based on front-forward design lends the Honda New Small Concept an appealing dynamic presence. Hondas design principle Man Maximum, Machine Minimum has defined the underlying approach in the design concept of the Honda New Small Concept. A wide platform with a stable center of gravity was adopted to create a highly efficient compact size car without compromising on the cabin space, hence greater passenger comfort.

Miami Beach, Florida You may be asking yourself why CanadianDriver is doing a piece on a five-year-old design. Or perhaps, youre asking yourself that other burning question: where is the new Honda Civic? You wouldnt be the only one to ask these questions. The first person to ask me was a U.S. Customs official at the border, after ensuring I wasnt carrying any fresh fruit with me.
Journalists who attended a Civic ride-and-drive event in Florida asked Honda representatives the same question: Why are we here? Their answer: Honda wants to keep the Civic front and centre in the minds of Canadians. They feel that despite it being a five-year-old design, it still is one of the best compact cars on the market. The Civic was Canadas best selling car in February, and has been so for 12 consecutive years, so Im not sure they have much to worry about.
Honda also wanted to remind us that they have three manufacturing plants in Canada and that 53 per cent of Honda vehicles sold in Canada are built here; this is the highest percentage of any manufacturer. Ninety-one per cent of all Hondas sold in Canada were built in Canada or the United States.

2010 Honda Civic Si. Click image to enlargeAs automotive journalists tend to drive only the newest-generation models when they first arrive and rarely again unless the car is refreshed, many of the attendees at this event, including myself, had not driven the Civic for a few years.
First, lets recap the Civics model range: it is available in four flavours sedan, coupe, Si and hybrid. The coupe and sedan are powered by a 1.8-litre four cylinder engine producing 140 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque and delivers class-leading fuel efficiency at a combined 6.5 L/100 km. The Si has a more potent 2.0-litre engine that produces an impressive 197 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque, while the Hybrid uses a gas and electric combination with a 1.3-litre gas engine with electric assist producing a combined 110 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque and Energuide ratings of 4.7 L/100 km city and 4.3 L/100 km highway.
For our drive to a closed test facility, we strapped ourselves into tuner Civics decked out with custom exhausts, rims, spoilers and carbon fibre hoods and trunk lids. Not having driven a Civic in a while, I was quickly reminded of a few things.
The interior, although not as soft touch as some of the newer competitors, is still a pleasant place to be. Some dislike the high mounted digital speedometer but it works extremely well and allows you to keep your eyes on the road ahead. Everything is perfectly laid out, ergonomically friendly and easy to use. There are plenty of little cubbyholes for coins, and the cup holders have a sliding cover that is not seen in all vehicles in this class.

2010 Honda Civic Si. Click image to enlarge

Padding is provided where padding is required, such as the door panel elbow rests, but the vanity mirrors are not illuminated and interior lighting is minimal a pet peeve of mine.
On the road, the Civic is easy to drive, quite maneuvrable and the five-speed manual transmission is a joy to use (no automatics were available to test). Road noise is a little harsh compared to some of its competitors but our testers were equipped with more sporting tires mounted on 18-inch wheels rather than the OEM all-seasons, which created a firmer and stiffer ride than one would expect on the standard 16-inch alloys on the EX-L model or the 15-inch wheels on the DX, DX-G and Hybrid models.
Although horsepower is competitive in the class, torque is low, which means as a driver you must be more alert and willing to use the transmission to its full potential. For example, on our short trip I shifted into fifth gear at 70 km/h when I encountered a small hill and even though I had the throttle wide open, the car was losing speed. You really do have to wind out the engine if you expect much performance from the standard 1.8-litre powerplant.
The Civic Si, though sharing the same DNA as the standard Civic, comes with that extra little punch that is needed to really have some fun especially on a closed road course where we spent the day thrashing our testers.

2010 Honda Civic Si. Click image to enlarge

The Si feels light on its feet and that translates to a vehicle that is fun to drive. Hondas goal was to remind us of how fun the Civic can be and remind us they did! With an afternoon of lapping followed by hot laps with professional drivers Patrick Carpentier and Scott Goodyear I feel confident in saying that everyone attending was thoroughly impressed with the capabilities of the Civic Si.
Priced at $25,880, the 2010 Civic Si Coupe and Sedan offer fun and value in an excellent package. Standard features include vehicle stability assist, 17-inch alloy wheels; sport tuned suspension, and a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
A 2010 Civic DX sedan starts at just $16,990 with a five-speed manual transmission and a wide variety of standard features such as: ABS and six airbags (some competitors offer only two) and a five-star crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Rated as a top pick by the Automotive Leasing Guide and Canadian Black Book for top residual values the Honda Civic must not be forgotten when shopping for a compact car.

Honda Plans Lithium-Ion Civic to Narrow Toyotas Lead (Update1)

                      http://www.businessweek.com/news/201...-update1-.html

Adds analyst comment in sixth paragraph.)
By Makiko Kitamura and Yuki Hagiwara
March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., Japans second- largest carmaker, plans to introduce lithium-ion battery-powered hybrid cars as it struggles to narrow Toyota Motor Corp.s lead in sales of gasoline-electric cars.
Honda plans to use lithium-ion batteries in its Civic compact within the next two to three years, as well as in its Acura luxury cars and other models, Executive Vice President Koichi Kondo said in an interview.
Honda has failed to match Toyotas success with hybrids, led by the top-selling Prius. Lithium-ion batteries can store as much as twice the energy of nickel-metal hydride batteries that currently power the Prius and Hondas Civic, Insight and CR-Z hybrid models, said Takeshi Miyao, a supply-chain analyst for auto consultant Carnorama in Tokyo.
Lithium will become a lot more prevalent, Kondo said in a March 16 interview at the companys headquarters in Tokyo. The lithium-ion batteries will be produced with Hondas joint- venture partner, Kyoto-based GS Yuasa Corp., starting in the second half of this year, he said. The venture is 49 percent owned by Honda.
Honda fell 1.5 percent to close at 3,200 yen in Tokyo trading.
With lithium-ion being used in upcoming electric cars, Honda may be switching to the new technology to compete, said Mitsuru Kurokawa, an analyst at consulting company IHS Global Insight in Tokyo.
                      Insight Misses
Hondas Insight hybrid fell short of the companys global sales target of 200,000 units in the first year after its February 2009 debut. Deliveries totaled 143,015 as of last month.
Toyotas third-generation Prius replaced the Insight as the best-selling car in Japan after its release last year. Toyota sold 27,008 Priuses in February, compared with Hondas 3,517 Insight deliveries.
In the U.S., Toyota sold 7,968 Prius cars last month, compared with Hondas 2,014 Insights. The hybrid version of the Civic sold 346 units. The larger Prius is more fuel-efficient than Hondas hybrids, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data.
Honda Chief Executive Officer Takanobu Ito said in July the carmaker is developing a new hybrid system to be installed in mid- to large-size vehicles. The company will also add a hybrid version of its Fit subcompact later this year.
                      Cost Savings
While similarly sized lithium-ion batteries may cost 30 percent more than nickel-metal hydride cells, carmakers may be able to find savings by using smaller packs because of their higher energy density, Miyao at Carnorama said.
Lithium-ion costs will also decline as technical advances are made and production increases, according to research company Fuji Keizai Group.
Nissan Motor Co. will roll out its first lithium-ion battery-powered car, the Leaf, this year in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn predicts electric vehicles will account for 10 percent of global car sales by 2020.
Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.s Subaru unit and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. introduced electric vehicles last year. Mitsubishi will start delivering its 4.6 million yen ($51,000) i-MiEV to retail customers next month.
Toyota plans to begin retail sales of a lithium-ion powered plug-in Prius in two years. The company will also start selling a short-distance all-electric car in 2012.
Separately, Hondas Kondo said he expects overall vehicle demand in the U.S. to rise to between 11 million and 12 million units this year from 10.4 million in 2009. Thats still lower than the 13.2 million sold in 2008.
Hondas U.S. sales in the first 10 days of March were up almost 20 percent from a year earlier, Kondo said. For the full month, sales will likely exceed the 13 percent growth posted in February, he said.

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Subaru unit and Mitsubishi introduced electric vehicles last year. Mitsubishi will start delivering its $51,000 i-MiEV to retail customers next month.
Honda, Japan's second-largest carmaker, plans to introduce lithium-ion battery-powered hybrid cars as it struggles to narrow Toyota's lead in sales of gasoline-electric cars.
Honda plans to use lithium-ion batteries in its Civic compact ''within the next two to three years,'' as well as in its Acura luxury cars and other models, Executive Vice President Koichi Kondo said.

Honda has failed to match Toyota's success with hybrids, led by the top-selling Prius. Lithium-ion batteries can store as much as twice the energy of the nickel-metal hydride batteries that power the Prius and Honda's Civic, Insight and CR-Z hybrid models, said Takeshi Miyao, a supply-chain analyst for auto consultant Carnorama in Tokyo.

''Lithium will become a lot more prevalent,'' Kondo said in a March 16 interview at the company's headquarters in Tokyo. The lithium-ion batteries will be produced with Honda's joint-venture partner, GS Yuasa Corp., starting in the second half of this year.
Honda's Insight fell short of the company's global sales target of 200,000 units in the first year after its February 2009 debut. Deliveries totaled 143,015 as of last month.
Toyota's third-generation Prius replaced the Insight as the best-selling car in Japan after its release last year. Toyota sold 27,008 Priuses in Feb
ruary, compared with Honda's 3,517 Insight deliveries.

In the U.S., Toyota sold 7,968 Prius cars last month, compared with Honda's 2,014 Insights. The hybrid version of the Civic sold 346 units. The larger Prius is more fuel-efficient than Honda's hybrids, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Honda Chief Executive Officer Takanobu Ito said last July the carmaker is developing a new hybrid system to be installed in mid- to large-size vehicles. The company also will add a hybrid version of its Fit subcompact later this year, using nickel-metal batteries.

While similarly sized lithium-ion batteries might cost 30 percent more than nickel-metal hydride cells, carmakers might find savings by using smaller packs because of their higher energy density, Miyao said.
Lithium-ion costs also will decline as technical advances are made and production increases, according to research company Fuji Keizai Group.
