Toyota, Honda Surge In U.S. Auto Market

For the first time ever, Toyota and Honda have moved past two of the U.S. Big Three to the top of the U.S. auto market, according to a recent report from Credit Suisse.

Whereas overall auto sales in the U.S. declined 14% year-over-year, Toyota (nyse: TM - news - people ) and Honda (nyse: HMC - news - people ) saw record gains at a time when higher gas prices, interest rates and geopolitical instability continue to upset the market.

The U.S. big three auto-makers, which include Ford Motor (nyse: F - news - people ), General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people ) and DaimlerChrysler, have faced a challenging 2006 thanks to tough comparisons with 2005's results.

Sales for General Motors were down 19.4%, Ford Motor was down 31.7%, and DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ) fell 31.5%, from year-ago sales levels.

In comparison, Toyota and Honda Motor reported record growth of 16.2% and 10.2%, respectively. Sales outside of the Big Three were up a total of 7%.
