Am dat peste o stire zilele trecute si vroiam sa o verific impreuna cu voi

Honda may follow Toyota's lead, ask Japanese gov't for aid

Yesterday we learned that Toyota's financial arm has applied for a $2 billion loan from the Japanese government. One day later comes word that Honda may follow suit. Honda is reportedly looking to borrow $100 million to loan to U.S. customers. The loan may be necessary due to the lack of money flowing through the U.S. financial market; a situation that is hurting all automakers. The financial markets are definitely hurting Honda, too, as the Japanese automaker posted a 38% sales decline for February versus 2008. Only two models in the Honda portfolio posted gains for the month; the fuel efficient Honda Fit and the new for 2009 Acura TSX. The February sales slide caused Honda to lose 4.6% on the Japanese stock exchange.

While the current global sales slide is hurting even the strongest of the world's automakers, some analysts see the situation improving later this year. Atlantis Investment Research Corp. president Edwin Merner in Tokyo told Bloomberg that he foresees vehicle sales improving by the end of the year, barring a further erosion of the global economy.

si asta vine sa intareasca ideea

    Japan ain’t smiling

Don’t imagine that just because there’s Trouble at T’Detroit Mill, the rival Japanese car makers are laughing. They’re not. So here at the Detroit Show, there have been a lot of expressions of solaridarity from the Japanese.

That’s because the industry is so interconnected. If GM, say, suddenly went down owing billions of dollars to the companies that produce its components, some of those suppliers would also go bust. And they’re mostly the same suppliers who feed parts to the US factories of Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

Let’s say an air-conditioning maker goes under. If that’s a supplier to Toyota too, Toyota can’t keep sending Camrys to dealers with a ruddy great hole in the dashboard where the AC ought to be. So it has to stop the production line. Which will cost it millions.

Here’s a quote from a speech made at the Detroit Show by Irv Miller, a senior executive at Toyota’s American subsidiary. ‘We’re committed to this show, to the city of Detroit and to the success of our industry.’

Besides which, Toyota has said that this year it will lose money for the first time since it was founded in 1949. Not a good position from which to crow at its American rivals’ expense.

Idem BMW in Germania care tocmai tatoneaza terenul.

        HONDA
Cifra de afaceri: 88.6 mld. €
Profit: +686 mio. € (fata de cei 5mld. din anul trecut.......)

        MAZDA
Cifra de afaceri: 21.9 mld. €
        Profit: -112 mio. €

        MITSUBISHI
Cifra de afaceri: 17.2 mld. €
        Profit: -523 mio. €

        NISSAN
Cifra de afaceri: 55 mld. €
        Profit: -1.5mld. €

        SUZUKI
Cifra de afaceri: 27.7 mld. €
        Profit: +194 mio. €

        TOYOTA
Cifra de afaceri: 146.8 mld. €
        Profit: -2.9mld. €

Audi Posts Record 2008 Profit, Workers Paid $6,775 Bonus; But 2009 Will Totally Suck

2008 was a record year for Audi, but unlike the not-so-Big Three, they were positive records. Audi produced more vehicles and more profits than ever before. So much so, they're paying employees $6,775 bonuses.

The Audi Group produced 1,003,469 vehicles for the 2008 calendar year, 4.1% more than 2007. Total profits after tax was $3.5 Billion, an increase of 30.4 percent.

While sales were down 6.1% in the US (to 87,760 vehicles) numbers were up in Audi's biggest market, China, by 17% (119,598 vehicles, as well as by small percentages in Europe.)

While other automakers cut staffing costs, Audi is paying each and every worker a $6,775 bonus and looking to invest even more by expanding its engineering staff. It hopes that this "counter-cyclical" approach will result in a stronger, more knowledgeable workforce and better products.

Speaking of products, Audi's claiming it'll have 12 all-new models on the way in the next seven years, taking Audi's total international model range to 40 vehicles with next year's big launch the 2010 Audi A1 premium compact car. Audi also plans to further invest in "clean Diesel" technology.

But it's not all peaches and cream. Audi's also feeling the impact in 2009. From January to February 2009, the Audi brand sold 119,600 cars worldwide, 20.3% fewer than in the prior-year period. They also don't expect things to get much better for the global auto market this year — reflecting the same situation other automakers are projecting.
