Honda Racing Team Put The New Civic BTCC Race Car Into Action

    http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...-car-into.html

SLOUGH, UNITED KINGDOM – Feb 21, 2012: The Honda Racing Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship team are putting the new Civic Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC) through its paces at its first public test outing at Brands Hatch today (21 February 2012).

Both Gordon ‘Flash’ Shedden and triple-BTCC champion Matt Neal will be pushing the car to the limit to make it is as competitive as possible ahead of the season debut on 1 April 2012.
The testing at Brands Hatch follows a successful preliminary test at the MIRA test track last week where the car underwent extensive system checks to ensure it is fully functional. Matt Neal and the Honda Racing team spent Friday acclimatising to the car and making sure it’s safe and ready for track testing.

Matt Neal commented; “This is the first opportunity we have had to get behind the wheel to really see what the car has got. The team are really pleased with the results from the test at MIRA last week and I can’t wait to finally start putting the car through its paces.
“It will be interesting to see how the car performs, but I’m optimistic that we’ll walk away from today confident we have a championship winning car.”
Gordon ‘Flash’ Shedden added; “The feedback on the new Civic NGTC car so far is incredibly promising and I’ve been itching to get into the car since the end of the 2011 season. Like Matt mentioned, this is the first time we have had to really push the car and I’m looking forward to putting it into action.”
Team Manager, Peter Crolla, concluded; “The team have all been working incredibly hard since the start of the NGTC programme back in August so everybody’s very excited to see the new car on track for the first time. It’ll be interesting from the point of view of both drivers and engineers to see how the car behaves on a track where we were very competitive with the S2000 Civic and we can really start to understand and develop the new car.

“The main aim for the day will be to establish a baseline set-up for the car which we can then tune for the various circuits we visit during the season. Initial feedback from the MIRA shakedown was positive so we’re hoping to continue that today and cover some valuable mileage with both Matt and Gordon behind the wheel”.

The next testing session takes place at Donington Park circuit on Thursday 23 February.

European Honda Civic hatchback in BTCC 2012 livery

    http://paultan.org/2012/03/13/europe...c-2012-livery/

Honda Yuasa Racing has revealed its 2012 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) car in full livery. It will be driven by Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden, with the former defending his BTCC title. The car will test for the first time in public next week at Silverstone.

The BTCC car is based on the ninth-generation “FB” European Honda Civic Hatchback. The made-in-England five-door hatch made its world debut at last year’s Frankfurt show.

In the UK, the latest Civic is available with three engine options – a 1.4L i-VTEC, 1.8L i-VTEC and a 2.2L i-DTEC diesel. Only the higher powered petrol engine can be had with a five-speed automatic, the rest are exclusively paired with a six-speed manual.

For the first time ever, the 2012 BTCC season will literally be a turbo-charged season. All cars will be come armed with a turbocharged 2.0 litre engine. More than half of the cars are built to the championship’s full ‘Next Generation Touring Car’ (NGTC) regulations. The remaining are current S2000-based race machines equipped with turbo engines built to NGTC specifications.

The season will feature cars from – in alphabetical order – Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, MG, Proton, Toyota, Vauxhall and VW. 14 teams will race this year, which flags off from Brands Hatch in Kent on the weekend of March 31 and April 1. The race then continues at nine tracks around the UK.

In case you did not already know, there will be two Proton Persona’s competing under the banner of Welch Motorsport, an independent race team. If you want to catch all the action, but don’t have a satellite TV subscription, you can do so online. ITV will be simulcasting the race on their website.

              Champ Flash goes like lightning

A MAN known as Flash was crowned British Touring Car Champion — and celebrated with a Usain Bolt-style lightning pose.

Jubilant Scot Gordon Shedden leaped on top of his Honda, making a sizeable dent in the roof, after tying up the title at Brands Hatch with one race to spare.

After mimicking a lightning bolt with his arms, he jumped down and bounced off the bonnet into the arms of his ecstatic crew.

He shared a bear hug with team-mate Matt Neal, last year’s champ and second in this year’s series.

But while the Honda pair celebrated, their arch rival Jason Plato was left to reflect on a day that was as miserable as the soggy Brands weather.

The SunSport columnist’s Triple 8 team simply could not make his MG6 work in the wet and he was never a threat, slipping to third in the final reckoning.

Shedden, who last took a motor racing title back in 2000, grabbed a saltire to wave on the podium.

He called his championship win “outrageous” and a dream come true — and thanked his team for building a “fantastic car”.

He sealed the deal by finishing runner-up in the second of the three races at the Kent circuit.

He said: “Even after it ended I didn’t know I’d won the title and I kept pestering the team on the radio.

“They told me I’d got a point for fastest lap and that was the point that made sure.”

Neal briefly looked as if he was back in the championship hunt after winning Race 1 — and vowed afterwards: “I’m still going for it.”

But in Race 2 he let a clearly faster Shedden through so the Scot could race to the crown unchallenged.

Neal said: “You never like to relinquish a title but Flash is a great guy.

“He has driven well this year, he deserves it and it is great for the team.”

Plato was philosophical in defeat, saying he knew he was done for as soon as he saw the weather first thing.

He needed his best meeting of the year to turn up the heat on the Hondas but ended up having one of his worst, recording only a fifth place and two eighths.

But he rated the year as a whole a massive success considering the car/team/driver combo was brand new.

And he warned: “This year will be a springboard to even better things in 2013. We will be back to kick a***.”

Andrew Jordan tied up the independent team drivers’ championship in his Honda after the BMW of main rival Rob Collard was punted into a disastrous spin in Race 2.

Pirtek Racing driver Jordan said: “It’s a fantastic feeling but I’m also relieved.

“I think I did a pretty good job this year and so did all the lads in the team.

“Next year the overall title has got to be the aim. You have to aim higher as you go on.”

While the three names at the top of the final standings had a familiar ring, the next generation announced their arrival big time at Brands with first-time wins for Ford ace Aron Smith in Race 2 and Toyota star Frank Wrathall in Race 3.
