Honda Civic Enters FIA World Touring Car Championship

    http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=1036881

Honda today announced that the Honda Civic will race in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).

"We have made a decision" said Honda CEO, Takanobu Ito "to enter into the WTCC with the European Civic. We will develop a totally new engine for this project and we are all excited about starting this new challenge."

For this project, Honda has formed a joint partnership with Mugen and J.A.S. Motorsport. Mugen will manufacture a bespoke racing engine developed by Honda R&D and will maintain the engine in every race along with the team. J.A.S. Motorsport will develop the race car, using the new Honda Civic 5door produced in Honda's manufacturing plant located in Swindon (UK).

The racing engine is a 1.6 litre 4 cylinder direct injection turbo-charged petrol engine, developed in accordance with FIA's Super 2000 regulations.

Honda's ambition is to join the WTCC as early as this season, with a string of "inaugural rounds". Discussions are currently being held with the FIA, but these rounds would include Japan (held on 21 October 2012 at Honda's Suzuka circuit), followed by China and Macau. Honda will then enter a two car team, managed by J.A.S. Motorsport, into every race in the 2013 championship season.

Racing has always been a fundamental element of Honda's DNA . In the late 1950s Honda first entered the Isle of man T.T and then Formula 1 in the 1960s. The FIA WTCC is the next chapter in Honda's on-going commitment to world motor sport and provides a perfect platform to demonstrate its racing spirit to Honda's numerous fans around the world.

                      http://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/20...but-at-suzuka/

Honda makes its debut as an official factory team in the World Touring Car Championship this weekend on home soil in the Race of Japan at Suzuka.

Tiago Monteiro will be behind the wheel of the brand new Honda Racing Team JAS-entered Honda Civic WTCC for Suzuka as well as the races in Shanghai and Macau, before being joined by Gabriele Tarquini for the full 2013 season once the Italian has seen out his contract with the Lukoil Racing Team.

“After testing in Vallelunga, Slovakia Ring and Portimao this summer, as well as at Sugo last week, my motivation has never been higher,” said Monteiro. “And now that we are only a few hours from the start of the event, I can feel the passion and excitement of the Honda fans building up.

“When you think about the amount of work that everyone at Honda and JAS has put in to get us here, I fully appreciate what a privilege it is to be the one behind the wheel. It is a very special moment, it really is.”

Daisuke Horiuchi, the WTCC Development Project Leader at Honda R&D said: “The entire team has been preparing for Suzuka ever since we announced our entry into the WTCC in February. It has obviously been a huge challenge, but we’re here and we’re ready.

“Part of the drive to get the car and team ready for these last three races of the 2012 WTCC calendar is that this race in Suzuka is so important to Honda. In 1962 our visionary founder Soichiro Honda designed this circuit – the very first racing circuit in Asia – so we were very motivated to make it here and be able to celebrate the 50th anniversary with our many fans and associates around the World.

“2012 is also the 40th anniversary of the Civic, so we couldn’t think of a better way to mark this important milestone than to see the latest European Civic compete at the highest level in the WTCC With these celebrations, this race at Suzuka will certainly be full of emotion for us. And whilst this is the Civic debut in the 2012 championship, with full entry only starting in 2013, I’m sure Tiago and the whole team will put in a performance fit for the occasion.”

The Honda will take to the track against the opposition for the first time in the Friday test session, at 05:30 BST. Two practice sessions take place on Saturday at 01:30 and 4:00 ahead of qualifying at 07:30. Sunday’s races are at 06:35 and 07:50, with coverage at thecheckeredflag.co.uk throughout the weekend.

Civic WTCC makes it to Q2 to start the race from 11th tomorrow

in its debut round in Suzuka

The Japanese round of the WTCC has kicked off today under a clear sky at Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture, Japan - perfect conditions for the Honda Civic WTCC to make its debut in the championship.

After successfully completing a test in Japan last week, Honda Racing Team JAS arrived at Suzuka Circuit in high spirits. In the press conference today, which the team held from 10:30am prior to qualifying, Hideo Sato, General Manager, Honda Motor Sports Division expressed his delight in participating in the championship, as well as his appreciation to all parties concerned. His comments were echoed by driver Tiago Monteiro, who shared his high motivation for the debut race.

Tiago immediately went onto the track as Q1 began at 3:30pm, but came off in his first attempt. After a short pit stop to replace his tyres, the Civic driver tried again, and recorded 53.875 - the 14th fastest time.

In another attempt, he improved his time to 53.840, but was unable to better his position, and returned to the pits with less than 4 minutes left in Q1. With a fresh set of tyres, he went back onto the track with less than one and a half minutes left in Q1. On the final lap, Tiago recorded 53.443 - 0.4 seconds faster than his previous best time, promoting him to 7th. As the result was announced a burst of applause was triggered in the stands.

In Q2, where the top 12 of Q1 advanced to, Tiago couldn't improve his time as desired, partly because the team had run out of the allocated new tyres after Q1. His best lap time in Q2 was 53.886, which means he is going to start the race tomorrow from 11th.

Race 1 will start at 2:35pm and Race 2 from 3:50pm on Sunday, 21 October.

Commenting on qualifying, driver Tiago Monteiro said: "We always knew that it was going to be very tight and difficult in qualifying. Our objective was to advance to Q2, and for that, we had to use all three sets of new tyres allocated for the qualifying. As a result, we recorded a good time to win a place in Q2. But this compromised the second qualifying session because there were no more new tyres to run on. But I think we need to look at it positively, because only a few weeks ago we were not sure if we could even be in Q2. I think we've achieved our goals for now, and we'll keep working and improving. We have two long races tomorrow and we'll do our best."

Honda Racing Team JAS Team Principal Alessandro Mariani added: "At the end of qualifying we were a little disappointed because we wanted to be in the top eight. Unfortunately, qualifying was very tough and Tiago made a small mistake on the first set of tyres. That affected the entire session because we had to use all our allocated tyres to make it to Q2, so we couldn't be where we wanted to be. However, in a way, this was as it should be, because this was our first qualifying and yesterday we only had a 30-minute run with a set of new tyres. So, with the little experience we've had, this is normal. We still believe that the car is good, so I hope to do well tomorrow."

Chief Engineer for Civic WTCC Development, Daisuke Horiuchi, said: "The engine had no problem at all throughout the qualifying and I felt relieved when we made it to Q2 at the last moment of Q1. I was hoping that we could record a similar time in Q2 as we had in Q1, but we'd used up all our new tyres, which was disappointing. After qualifying, I know that participating in the WTCC won't be easy and we still have a lot of work to do. But in the race tomorrow we will try hard to move up as many places as possible from our position after qualifying, and hopefully put in a great performance for the fans."

Civic WTCC finishes Races 1 and 2 in 9th and 10th respectively

                        in its first appearance

Today, Rounds 19 and 20 of the WTCC took place under a clear sky at Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture, Japan.

                        Race 1:

Race 1 got underway at 2:30pm and was competed over 26 laps on the East Course of Suzuka Circuit. Tiago Monteiro started the race in his Honda Civic WTCC from 11th. After a rolling start, Tiago kept his position at the beginning of the race. Throughout there were close fights with the cars in front and behind, but the Civic WTCC driver maintained his place and when a front-runner went off the track on Lap 22, he climbed to tenth - the position he kept until he was shown the chequered flag. After the finish of the race, the Civic WTCC was promoted to ninth in the final classification due to a penalty given to another car.

                        Race 2:

In Race 2, the first 10 cars in qualifying were placed in reverse order on the starting grid. After a standing start from 11th, Tiago maintained his position at the early stage of the race and later started fighting closely with a BMW in front. After a long battle over 10 laps, he finally overtook his rival on the first corner on Lap 23 to move up to 10th before finishing the 26-lap race.

Rounds 21 and 22 of the WTCC in China will be held on Shanghai International Circuit on 3 and 4 November.

Driver Tiago Monteiro: "We are very happy and excited that we got our first points. Only a few weeks ago, we said we it would be great if we could break into the top 10, and that's where we are, so I'm satisfied. The car felt quite good, a lot better than in qualifying. But we are still learning about the car, and every time we try to find a better setup and balance in the car, so especially in Race 2, the car was very good. It was very important for us to finish the races in decent conditions as a first step and we will keep working hard in Shanghai and Macao to lean more."

Honda Racing Team JAS Team Principal, Alessandro Mariani: "I am very pleased because we were able to show our speed in the actual races. Our lap times were very good and consistent. Unfortunately, it was difficult to overtake on the short Suzuka circuit and the result of yesterday's qualifying affected our final outcome. However, finishing in the top ten in the two races - and not that far from the winning cars - is a good result. I would like to thank the engineers at Honda who created the excellent new engine and our team members who have worked hard, night and day, to achieve this result - a great effort that has really paid off."

Chief Engineer for Civic WTCC Development, Daisuke Horiuchi: "I am pleased that we completed both Races 1 and 2 in our debut round. The car, including the engine, performed well and didn't have any major problems. However, there's so much more for us to work on and improve. Although we've not had long to prepare, we were able to make it in time for Suzuka. So, I think we have achieved a satisfactory level for now. We will continue working hard to complete the car for the next rounds in China, and we really appreciate everyone's support."

Nu e nicio drama, sunt in regim de teste pe durata acestor ultime 3 curse ale acestui an. Primul an (intreg!) ti-l iarta oricine, de la al doilea incolo apar pretentiile. Deci sa nu cerem maximum din start.
