And Now There is One ... Honda FCX Clarity Declared 2009 World Green Car !

                        http://www.automotive.com/auto-news/02/42615/index.html

NEW YORK, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- At a press conference hosted by the New York International Auto Show and Mobil 1 at the Jacob Javits Centre in Manhattan, New York, the Honda FCX Clarity was declared the 2009 World Green Car.

This is the second World Green Car win for Honda who previously won for the Honda Civic Hybrid in 2006.

The Honda FCX Clarity was chosen from an initial entry list of twenty-two (22) contenders nominated by fifty-nine (59) World Car jurors from twenty-five (25) countries throughout the world.

To be eligible for the 2009 World Green Car* award, a vehicle had to available in at least one major market during 2008. The vehicle or the green technology could be in production or an experimental prototype with potential near-future application, provided that it was released for individual or press fleet evaluations in quantities of ten or more during 2008. Tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, and use of a major advanced power plant technology (beyond engine componentry), aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle's environmental responsibility, were all taken into consideration.

Due to the complexity of some of the 'green' technologies, three (3) green experts were appointed by the World Car Steering Committee to extensively review all documentation and specs associated with each candidate. They were asked to create a short-list of five finalists for review by the fifty-nine (59) jurors in their second round of voting in February. The ballots were then tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.

The three green experts were in alphabetical order:

Sam Abuelsamid (representing North America) is the technical editor of several 'green' web sites including GreenFuelsForecast.com, DieselForecast.com and HydrogenForecast.com. In 2006, he began writing for AutoblogGreen.com and Autoblog.com; becoming a full-time writer and photographer and editor in 2007.

Dean Slavnich (representing Europe) is editor of Engine Technology International (ETi) and its sister publication, Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology International (E&H), for the past four years. Engine Technology International is widely regarded as the most readable, passionate and informative publication currently produced on the subject of OE engine and powertrain design, development and manufacture.

Tadashi Tateuchi (representing Asia) is the creator and chairman of the Japan Electric Vehicle (EV) Club. He was awarded the Environment Minister's medal in 1998. A juror on the Japan Car of the Year panel, he contributes regularly to Car Graphic magazine and the Japan Automobile Federation's monthly magazine.

The fifty-nine (59) member jury chose the Honda FCX Clarity, the Mitsubishi iMiEV, and the Toyota iQ as the top three finalists for the 2009 World Green Car award.

Jurors felt that "The FCX clarity is an utterly real, hydrogen-fuelled luxury sedan that provides the amenities people expect in a premium car with 430 km range, fuel consumption of about 3.3 litres/100 km (72 mpg US) equivalent and zero tailpipe emissions. While there is only so much the automotive industry can do when it comes to this technology - governments need to come onboard to help create a true refuelling infrastructure - Honda must be credited for taking a bold step in leasing FCX Clarity to customers in California for US$600 per month. There's still a long way to go before fuel-cell cars will become a commercial success, but hats off to Honda for continuing to advance this expensive technology during a time when every cent counts."

"Honda is honored to receive this distinguished award. The FCX Clarity is a symbol of the progress we have made with fuel cell vehicles and our commitment to developing vehicles that meet the societal goals of climate stability, renewable energy supplies and zero-emissions transportation," said Steve Center, Vice President, National Marketing Operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Now in their sixth year, the annual World Car awards have become one of the world's most prestigious, credible and significant programs of its kind.

The awards were inaugurated in 2003, and officially launched in January 2004, to reflect the reality of the global marketplace, as well as to recognize and reward automotive excellence on an international scale. The awards are intended to complement, not compete, with existing national and regional Car of the Year programs.

The awards are administered by a non-profit association, under the guidance of a Steering Committee of pre-eminent automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. There is no affiliation with, nor are the awards in any way influenced by any publication, auto show, automaker, or other commercial enterprise.

Honda FCX Clarity: Clarity of vision !

                          http://www.recorder.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1609024

Posted By Rob Daly, SUN MEDIA

                          Posted 1 day ago

When brass at Honda's U.S. headquarters announced the company would participate in a long-distance demonstration of experimental fuel cell vehicles following the west coast of the U.S., it only made sense that one of Canada's most eco-friendly cities should be the northern terminus of a trip that began May 21, 2009 at the Mexico-U.S. border south of Los Angeles and ended in Vancouver June 3.
The 2009 Hydrogen Road Tour was designed to raise awareness of automakers' advances in hydrogen fuel cell technology, proving that this is a fuel source that can be used today in a real-world car.
Vehicles from Chevrolet, Honda and Mercedes (among others) made 28 stops along the way, providing about 1,000 kilometres of public ride-and-drive time for media and public officials.
"We're the first to build fuel cell vehicles on a true production line - even if it is a limited run at this time," said Honda project engineer Ryan Harty as we tooled around picturesque Stanley Park in his company's FCX Clarity. "The production plant in Japan is the one that once built Acura's NSX supercar."
The Clarity has been developing a high public profile in California, where celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis have been using preproduction versions of the car. Even California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken the zero-emissions vehicle for a spin and endorsed Honda's efforts.
Harty says the fuel cell team has been working with three major societal challenges in mind: reducing impact on air quality, reducing vehicles' impact on climate change, and addressing the issue of sustainability as world supplies of fossil fuels dwindle.
Even using the current model Honda uses in extracting hydrogen from natural gas, the FCX is three times more efficient than a modern mid-size car and twice as efficient as a current hybrid. If you're looking for a concrete fuel economy number, try under 4.0 L/100km.
And this efficiency comes with very few compromises. The car's exterior dimensions are similar to the Honda Accord, yet its interior dimensions rival Acura's flagship RL sedan.
"This is the first fuel cell vehicle we've designed specifically to be a fuel cell vehicle," said Harty. "We've taken advantage of the size and shape of the components, rather than adapting a current internal combustion model."
This means that the fuel stack - a rectangular unit roughly the size of several stacked large pizza boxes and also known as the proton exchange membrane fuel cell - is located between the front seats. The central console looks much like your average flip-top storage area, except the only storage available is a pair of cupholders.
The stack converts the hydrogen to electrical current - 288 kilowatts worth - sending it to either the lithium ion battery (for storage) or the synchronous permanent magnet motor that produces 134 hp and 189 lb.-ft. of torque to the wheels from 0-3,056 rpm. Regenerative braking also adds power back into the batteries located under the rear seat, just forward of the hydrogen tank.

Here is one of perhaps three major compromises with the FCX design. Because two major components of the power system are located under and behind the rear seat, luggage capacity for this mid-size car is more in line with what you'd expect in a compact.
Unlike current electric vehicles, driving range isn't a major compromise. With the FCX's four-kilogram hydrogen tank, it's capable of cruising up to 386 kilometres - a far cry from the 96-kilometre "threshold" electric proponents are setting as a usable commuter range in urban settings. And refuelling takes just minutes, not hours.
As a challenge, the Hydrogen Road Tour had to bring along its own source of fuel, since hydrogen isn't readily available at the local station.
"Infrastructure is the major issue now," said Harty. "With the FCX Clarity we feel we've proven we're right there in terms of providing fuel cell product that will work for the everyday consumer. Creating the infrastructure that will make this work on a large scale is a big job that requires a lot of commitment from a lot of sources."
                          That's compromise number two.
There were no numbers provided on the actual market value of the FCX Clarity; all current models on the road are leased to individuals who must apply to be included in the pilot project. One can only assume the car's current price tag, if it had one, would look right at home on a real estate listing.
That's compromise three, although the price is expected to drop if political will makes the car feasible in an area larger than its current three communities near Honda's Torrance, Calif. headquarters.
The fourth compromise is temperature. The car has now been tested in temperatures down to -30C and, although it does start up and operate, it's far from ready for a full winter in sub-zero temperatures.
"That's an area that still needs some work," admitted Stephen Ellis, manager of Honda's fuel cell marketing. "There are plenty of things to still be ironed out and questions to be answered, but we're making steady progress."
Those who were lucky enough to drive the FCX Clarity would tend to agree. If cars like this are part of our future, drivers have no reason to bemoan the move away from dino fuel.

Honda vrea modele pe hidrogen accesibile pana in 2020 !

                            http://www.automarket.ro/stiri/honda...020-23574.html
