2013 Acura ILX and RDX at the Chicago Auto Show




There won't be too many surprises from Acura at this year's Chicago Auto Show. The automaker’s new-for-2013 ILX sedan and refreshed RDX SUV were already unveiled in near-production prototype form at the 2012 Detroit auto show. Acura plans to take the wraps off of the actual production versions in Chicago.
From the Detroit prototype, it looks like Acura's second-generation RDX compact SUV doesn't change a lot for 2013. It's a bit longer and has sleeker-looking exterior styling. Under the hood, the RDX swaps its former turbocharged four-cylinder for a new 3.5-liter V-6 for 2013. We expect the new RDX to go on sale this spring.
The 2013 ILX is a compact, Civic-based sedan and Acura's first hybrid vehicle. It'll slot below the TSX in Acura's lineup and will come with three engine options: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder and a 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain. We'll know more at the Chicago auto show, but in Detroit, Acura said the ILX will start "well below $30,000" when it goes on sale this summer.
Both vehicles will be unveiled at Acura's press conference on Feb. 8. Check back with us then for more from the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.

2013 Acura ILX Sedan Spy Photos, Including Interior




Acura is less than two weeks away from revealing its production-ready ILX compact sedan at the Chicago auto show, but our spy shooters spotted a test vehicle and managed to take a clear picture of the car’s dash. The ILX concept, which appeared in January in Detroit, was an exterior buck with no interior.
Surprise, surprise: The interior is pretty standard Acura stuff. The button-smothered center stack borrows a few pieces from the Honda Civic—it shares a basic platform with the ILX—including the climate-control knobs at the bottom. It looks like Acura won’t use this car as an opportunity to stray from its current infotainment setup, which involves a giant control knob protruding from the middle of the dashboard. We’re not fans of the setup as a whole, but we’ve at least been promised that the software will receive a significant upgrade. Since the ILX is targeted at younger shoppers (think people under 40), there’s a lot at stake in having quick, modern, and seamless phone integration and navigation.
The pictures don’t convey material or assembly quality, but we hope significant attention has been given to the ILX’s cabin: The cheap-feeling interior in the ILX’s Civic sibling is a big disappointment. Honda heard us—and the rest of the car-buying public—and is fast-tracking updates said to enrich the experience. That hopefully bodes well for the ILX’s trappings.

Acura previously announced that the ILX would get three powertrain configurations. A 2.0-liter four making 150 to 160 hp will be paired exclusively with an automatic transmission. The enthusiast’s choice will be the 200-ish-hp, 2.4-liter four sold only with a six-speed manual gearbox. Finally, an ILX hybrid will be offered and borrow its 1.5-liter four from the Civic hybrid; the electric motor probably will be shared with the Honda, too. Exact specs for the three powerplants should accompany the car’s official debut.
As for the ILX’s sheetmetal, it should be nearly identical to that of the Detroit concept. A few of the smallest details—wheels, the shape of the side mirrors—could change, but in essence, what we saw is what we’ll get. It looks decent in person, and the Civic roots aren’t obvious. While we and the rest of the enthusiast community want a new Integra with aggressive styling, we are a minority of the car-buying public. This car should be attractive to the Millennial yuppies that Acura’s trying to court.

European design patent filing reveals the production 2013 ILX ( noul CIVIC sedan ??? )


In our ILX Forum, somebody posted a link to a french site which had a few black and white images of the ILX. I quickly recognized the "dummy" wheels as those which always seem to appear in Honda's design patent filings to the European Patent Office, so I ran a quick search there and found these 7 images. As you can see, what Jon Ikeda told us was correct, everything above the mid-bumper line on the concept was pretty much production. These images reveal what's changed below that point - as you can see, the production car's front bumper cover becomes more arrow-like, with more than a hint of 3rd-gen TL flavor. The foglight housings are enlarged and a bit more defined, and there is a new opening found at the lower edge of the bumper, helping form the overall "arrow" shape of the bumper. Also, in the rear of the vehicle, note that the "integrated exhaust" cutouts have given way to the standard "Euro-style" lower bumper reflectors.

Previewed as a concept at this year’s Detroit auto show, Acura’s new ILX sedan wears production-ready sheetmetal as the curtain rises on the 2012 Chicago show. Consistent with Honda/Acura practice, the distinctions between the Detroit concept and the production car on display in Chicago’s McCormick Place are subtle indeed: a little character crease in the side mirrors, a little less bright trim around the trademark Acura chrome overbite grille, minor distinctions in the lower fascia and air dam, and a simpler wheel design.
It takes a keen eye to see the differences between the so-called concept and the production car, which isn’t really a bad thing. It takes a much keener eye—X-ray vision, in fact—to see the similarities between the ILX and the Honda Civic. And this is a good thing, since the relatively humble Civic provided the structure and mechanical elements for this new entry-level luxury compact, and it wouldn’t do for it to look like a mere badge job.
The Inner Civic
On the other hand, it doesn’t require a particularly keen eye to see Civic genetics in the powertrain specifications. There are three power choices, including Acura’s first-ever hybrid, all traceable to the Civic warehouse.

The standard engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, making 150 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque (as distinct from the Civic’s 140-hp, 1.8-liter SOHC four). The go-fast choice is a 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four—shared with the Acura TSX and Civic Si—which puts out 201 hp at 7000 rpm and 170 lb-ft at 4300 rpm. EPA numbers for the basic ILX 2.0, which is limited to a five-speed automatic transmission, are 24/32 mpg, while the ILX 2.4, paired only with a six-speed manual, is rated for 20/29.
Option three is a hybrid; its powertrain is essentially a direct lift from the Civic hybrid, with a 1.5-liter SOHC 8-valve four boosted by a 20-hp electric motor sandwiched between the engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission. Total system output is rated at 111 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. Like the gas-electric Civic, the Acura version features a stop/start function that shuts down the engine at stoplights. However, EPA fuel economy ratings—35 mpg city, 38 highway—aren’t nearly as compelling as the Civic’s 44/44.
Why the disparity? Tech details are skimpy at this point and include no mention of curb weight. Given what we anticipate will be a higher level of content, richer materials, and more sound-suppression material than in Civic sedans, we suspect mass may be the culprit. Don’t be surprised if this also means the ILX hybrid is less fleet than the already slow Civic hybrid.
While the ILX began with the latest Civic platform, it’s not a carbon copy. At 105.1 inches, the wheelbase is the same as the Civic sedan’s. But the Acura is longer (179.1 inches versus 177.3), lower (55.6 inches versus 56.5), and wider (70.6 inches versus 69.0), yielding a slightly sportier appearance. Though bigger than its mechanical cousin, it’s worth noting that the ILX is smaller than the TSX, the European Accord–based sedan that has been Acura’s entry model up until now.

In hopes of furthering the Acura’s not-just-a-Civic agenda, new “Amplitude Reactive Dampers” are used in the strut/multilink suspension. The system has two operating modes, presumably offering standard and sporty presets, and, hopefully, edgier dynamic responses than the milquetoast non-Si Civics.
Luxury expectations at the compact end of the vehicle market are steadily escalating, and Acura promises a broad range of goodies for the ILX, most of them already established via the TSX. The list includes Acura’s nav system with voice recognition and real-time traffic and weather info; the ELS Surround premium audio system; a rearview camera system; a 60-GB hard drive with 15 gigs allocated for music storage; a sunroof; heated power seats; and, of course, leather. Most if not all of the foregoing will be bundled in higher trim levels. We have yet to see a comprehensive list of standard features, but Acura does mention some desirable additions—keyless access with pushbutton start, and Pandora internet-radio interface, plus text-message capability.
Money, Timing, and the Future
Honda and Acura are nothing if not tight-lipped about pricing, and that’s no different here. All we know for certain at this writing is that the ILX’s base price will be “well under $30,000.” How deep is that “well”? Base prices for uplevel mainstream Civics (i.e., regular gasoline powertrains) such as the EX-L and Si start below $22,000, whereas the Acura TSX range begins at a little over $30,000. That leaves a pretty good-size window for the ILX, and we’ll guess that the starting point will be about $27,000. The ILX will appear in showrooms this spring.
And it will do so at an interesting time for the brand. On one hand we have the prospect of the NSX supercar, due by 2015. On the other we have this new compact that looks like part of the family, but doesn’t look to be a thrill ride. A new Integra it’s decidedly not, but we’d wager that the small luxury sedan will do more to fill the brand’s coffers than a mid-engine supercar. Just a guess, though. View Photo Gallery

CHICAGO, Feb. 8, 2012 – Following up on its blockbuster appearance at this year’s Detroit auto show, Acura today unveiled production versions of two new vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show. A completely redesigned 2013 Acura RDX crossover sport utility vehicle and the all-new 2013 Acura ILX luxury compact sedan were shown. Both new Acura models are scheduled for launch in the Spring.

“We are excited to be launching these two new luxury models as the gateway of Acura’s revitalized product lineup,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of Acura. “As we embark on our second 25 years as a premium luxury-performance automobile brand, we are excited about the role these two vehicles will play in welcoming a new generation of luxury car buyers to the Acura brand.”

The 2013 Acura ILX compact sedan is an all-new model that is positioned as the gateway into the Acura brand. The primary target customers for the new ILX are Generation Y— successful 20 and 30-somethings moving into the luxury car ranks but looking for high-value propositions in their purchases.

“First-time luxury buyers tend to place a high value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues, and that's what we have created with the new Acura ILX,” said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. “The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market.”

Sleek and sporty, the ILX combines luxury, performance and efficiency. While maintaining a strong emphasis on stylish and aerodynamically efficient exterior design, the ILX features a large and airy greenhouse that provides excellent outward visibility. As a five-passenger luxury sedan, the ILX combines compact proportions with a spacious passenger interior and ample cargo space— perfect attributes for young professionals on the go.

The ILX will feature three advanced, sporty and efficient powertrain choices, including Acura’s first-ever gas-electric hybrid. The entry-level ILX will be powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine producing 150 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 140 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm.

Paired with a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission, the ILX 2.0L will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy of 24/32 mpg.

For those who seek a more dynamic driving experience, the ILX can be equipped with a 2.4-liter engine with an output of 201 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 170 lb-ft torque at 4,300 rpm. Mated to a close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission, the ILX 2.4L will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy of 20/29 mpg.

Marking the debut of Acura’s first ever hybrid model, the ILX Hybrid makes use of a 1.5-liter inline engine and an Integrated Motor Assist® electric motor. Paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the ILX 1.5L Hybrid will deliver an EPA estimated* city/highway fuel economy rating of 35/38 mpg.

The hybrid drivetrain uses the gasoline engine as the primary power source, while an electric motor provides additional power when needed. A lithium-ion battery pack is used to capture and store electricity for the 20 horsepower electric motor. Together, the gasoline engine and electric motor produce 111 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 127 lb-ft of torque between 1,000-3,000 rpm. During braking, the gasoline engine deactivates and the electric motor acts as a generator to recharge the battery pack. At a stop, the 1.5-liter engine can enter idle-stop mode to save fuel and reduce emissions. The engine remains off until the brake pedal is released.

The ILX chassis utilizes advanced MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems, along with new Amplitude Reactive Dampers. The dampers operate in two distinct performance parameters to simultaneously provide superior ride comfort and precision handling.

In addition, Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering is used for excellent steering feel and improved fuel efficiency. The result is a chassis with a high level of refinement, confident handling and a nimble and sporty driving experience.

The ILX will feature a high-quality, well-appointed interior that is smart, spacious and sporty. It will offer a number of new, high-value features including a standard Keyless Access System with smart entry and pushbutton start, along with Pandora® internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

As with all Acura models, the ILX will have a long list of standard features, multiple trim levels (a Premium Package and Technology Package), and excellent standard safety features— including Acura’s acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, front, side and side-curtain airbags, 4-channel anti-lock brakes and Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®). Although yet to be tested, Acura anticipates that the ILX will achieve top crash safety ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS.

The available Premium Package features leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, an upgraded 360 watt stereo system, a rear view camera and an Active Sound Cancellation system to make for a quieter cabin.

Building on the Premium Package, the available Technology Package adds Acura’s award winning ELS Surround® audio system and a full complement of relevant technologies, including AcuraLink® Satellite Communication System, Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Rerouting™, and AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ with radar image maps. The navigation system makes use of a hard disk drive (HDD) with 60 gigabytes of storage capacity— including 15 gigabytes that can be specifically allocated for music storage. With the available Premium or Technology Package, a new multi-view rear camera is used.

The Acura ILX will be manufactured (using U.S. and globally sourced parts), exclusively at the company’s state-of-the-art Greensburg, Indiana plant, one of only three plants worldwide to receive J.D. Power and Associates’ 2011 Platinum Award for outstanding product quality, and the top award for any factory in North America.

Chicago LIVE: 2013 Acura ILX unveiled [Video update]

Acura ’s new entry-level offering, the ILX, has made its production debut in Chicago. As expected, it differs little from the “concept” version shown at the Detroit show, but now Acura has finally given us a look at the interior of its sub-TSX sedan and divulged power and fuel economy ratings.

Aside from Acura ’s familiar three-spoke steering wheel, the ILX gets a unique cabin with a relatively simple center stack, a centrally-mounted navigation/information screen and asymmetrical A/C vents dotting the dashboard.
The ILX’s front end is unmistakably an Acura design, though the controversial “beak” grille is more gracefully incorporated than in some of the brand’s other vehicles. The sides of the ILX feature a pair of eye-catching character lines: one runs relatively straight from the front headlight to the back of the rear window, while the other starts aft of the front wheel and sweeps up to create a “hip” above the rear wheel were the two meet. Around back, the taillights are reminiscent of the units on the brand’s crossover vehicles.
The only exterior changes made during the ILX’s transition from concept to production include restyled, less aggressive lower fascias front and rear along with different wheels.
Powertrain Options
Riding on the same basic platform employed by the Honda Civic, the ILX will be offered with a pair of four-cylinder motors in addition to Acura’s first hybrid system.
The base motor will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 150 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. Paired exclusively with a five-speed automatic transmission, Acura expects this powertrain combo to be good for 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway (final EPA testing has yet to be performed).Those looking for a speedier compact luxury sedan can opt for a 2.4-liter inline-four that produces 201 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. Essentially the same motor found in the larger TSX, it comes hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission and returns estimated mileage of 20/29 mpg.
The ILX hybrid will get a 1.5-liter gasoline engine (with stop-start technology) teamed with a CVT and a 20 horsepower electric motor that draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack. The setup is good for a combined 111 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque, while mileage is estimated at 35/38 mpg.
Acura ILX will be manufactured exclusively at the company’s Greensburg, Indiana plant, with sales set to begin this spring.
